Move apps to New Computer

Got New Computer, How can I move apps to it?

My old PC has died, I just got a new one. I was able to DL iTunes to it and authorize it and all that. But none of my apps are on iTunes. They are all in my iPhone.

I was going to sync apps but it appears that it will erase everything on my phone since none are on the computer.

I want to get them to the computer for back up and to rearrange some of the new ones I've added.

if you connect your iPhone to your computer, go to iTunes... then > File > Transfer Purchases from iPod.

This should suck the apps out of your phone and into iTunes.

Probably best to go ahead and redownload them to your computer. They won't charge you for them if you use the same account.

Can this be done en masse? it could be rather tedious to d/l dozens (or hundreds) of apps. And what about the ones that you got at a temporary free/reduced price?

Before i do any of this let me ask. If I send my apps to the site, will I lose all data the next time I sync.

Also I should have mentioned that before I crashed I did keep my iPhone data on an external HD and they're still there. Can I somehow bring all that over. Music as well I guess.

Just copy the entire iTunes library and drag on the new computer. Either a cross over cable (Ethernet), wifi connect (it will be slower), or a hard drive.

If the new computer is a Windows 7 machine and the old is at least a Windows XP. U can use the Win 7 transfer utility to make the new computer "act" like your old computer, at least as far as your iPhone is concerned.

I am in same position, MobileMe is great but doesn't work with Firefox or Chrome at all, Firefox Sync works fine on Firefox for 'backing up' between browsers but has no controls like XMarks, Chrome Sync works fine on Chrome but not with any other browsers... I don't know why XMarks didn't just institute a 'pay' option to break even, I would gladly pay at least $5 per month for XMarks if not more...

Xmarks now has a pledge page to see if they can get users to pledge a $10 per year fee in order to keep Xmarks. It is a marvelous add-on, I hope they are not doing this too late to save it.

Yes - I signed the pledge, along with LastPass it is well worth $1 a month (or $10/year).

In the meantime, anyone with access to MobileMe or a decent hosting account (that supports WebDav folder access) can create their own XMarks server. Unfortunately, only the most recent version of the Firefox Addon supports using your own server so using it for all browsers doesn't work but at least I can continue using it in Firefox across all machines and is far more reliable than the "Firefox Sync" that is part of Firefox 4.0 (in beta) and available as an add-on for Firefox 3.6.x

I am going to have to write a post since screen shots might be necessary but basically log into MobileMe, go to the iDisk section create a folder names 'xmarks' then go to Xmarks > Xmarks Settings > Advanced and check "User your own server"

Does anyone know of a good app or website I can go to for live streaming TV?

I can't believe no one has come out with a decent app yet for our fancy Iphones. I will not go out and buy some kind of new equipment for home to be able to watch it on my phone. There has to be a good website if not an app, I would think. Some of them charge a subscription fee but I would be willing to pay something per month if the service was good.

For Live TV? The only way that I am aware of is buying a Slingbox and buying the slingplayer App - neither are cheap but there are no monthly fees.

For non-live / TV on DVD there is Netflix at $8.99 a month and free App, Hulu is free and HuluPlus is I think $10.99 for 'more episodes'.

So, now that people have had a chance to try 4.1 on 3G phones, what's the verdict? Worth upgrading from 3.1.3 or no? I am more interested in speed and performance than the additional features. If the upgrade will adversely affect speed and performance, I'll pass. What do you think?

4.0 was not as fast on the iPhone 3G as 4.1 is. I currently have 4.1 on my iPhone 3G, it's not any slower or faster than 3.1.3 was. The only reason I upgraded was so that I could make folders for apps. There really aren't many features that 4.1 brings to the iPhone 3G. Unless you want to be able to make folders, like me, I would just stick with 3.1.3

Local contacts on iPhone from Exchange?

I sync my iPhone Contacts with Exchange server. This means that when the Exchange server is down or out of reach, I have no local contacts at all. Is there a way to replicate the list onto the phone?

They should stay on the phone, you just wouldn't be able to send/receive updates until service is back. What phone and iOS version are you on?

Otherwise, whenever you had no data connectivity (Airplane mode / WiFi Off) you would have no contacts or calendar, etc. Unless there is some security feature turned that HAS to connect / verify w/Exchange server before showing contacts but I haven't seen anyone else report this...

I've got a 3GS running the latest iOS 4.whatever , and syncing with Exchange Server 2007 over ActiveSync

(extra fun: I sync my iPhone to my home computer; my home computer is NOT allowed to access the Exchange Server)

On further experimentation I only experienced the problem when I was *locked out* of the Exchange Server so I'm going to have to do some more testing. Need to have some free time at work to play with being locked out so I can unlock myself; getting unlocked from home is No Fun.

Anyone get this to work yet? I can text..sure..but as for making calls? Um nope...i went to his forum...no answers there for me...

It asks me for my password several times [even though I changed it manually as he suggested]....then when I want to dial a number from my Google favorites or anywhere else, it wants me to type in the numbers.

Oh well...I'll keep playing with it...but as for now...I'm disappointed... :(

What is the problem? Do you have Google Voice set up with your iPhone number as one of your numbers? It works fine for me, dial number it rings phone and connects to other party. Offline mode uses the ,/pause system to dial through my GV # and place the call.

I would like a little clarification too, in terms of minute use.

I downloaded the app, and I can make calls. But it shows up on my recent calls list through the regular iphone which makes me wonder if that call is using my minutes. Fine if it is, just curious.

I'm off to test whether or not I've properly transferred my google calls to ring through to my phone, which then brings me full circle - will minutes be billed to ATT?

It worked for me. You setup account with username ( your gmail email) and password. If you mess up these then delete by swiping and reenter again

You need to set your phone you wish to use to call in settings> phone to ring and also forward calls to in settings

You can type in phone number on pad in dial or hit the person icon on pad to access your contacts.

Basically google voice does not use the wifi like on computer using google chat but connects to a phone in Michigan or somewhere which then connects to your iPhone and then dials the number on pad or contact chosen

You will incur minutes and charges as this is using AT&T

The person receiving the call will see your google number not your cell number

I have written one blog on the use of google voice and will add more as I learn more.

Yes. It's set up on my phone. The pevious way worked well for me. I dial and it goes to my google voice mail. Which requires a password every time. Then it tells me if I want to place a call, please dial......

Mind u...this was after I clicked on my google favorite to call it.

Yes. Minutes are being used. However, if you set it up where the Google number is on your 'favorites' list, then no additional minutes are being used. I know I didn't answer this clearly, but I'm sure someone else will chime in!

I'm having good luck with GV mobile + as well. Works well with offline dialing enabled or disabled. With it disabled, the calls go through much faster if you don't mind a ring-back to connect. With offline dialing enabled it takes a while to do its auto-dialing routine "talking" to you all the while - you just have to wait it out and ignore it's request for a pin.

That mode tries my patience a bit, but it could be useful in a no-data or marginal-data performance situation.

Also, with offline dialing disabled, my outgoing caller ID is the google voice number. With offline dialing enabled, it sends the number of whatever phone I'm using.

Yes, you can use most of your iPhone Apps on the iPad, the ones that require phone functions obviously will not work and if you get a WiFi iPad, the ones that require GPS, etc will not work (as the current WiFi model does not have GPS). Most iPad Apps are universal meaning that there is only one app that works on both the iPhone and iPad in full screen - they show up in the App Store with a + sign. There are some apps that are only for the iPhone and show up in the middle of the iPad and you can hit the 2x button which stretches it out to make it full screen and then there are other apps that have separate iPhone and iPad versions that you would have to buy again IF you want the iPad specific version but the iPhone version will still work.

Google Contacts out-of-sync

I changed my Google password, but neglected to change it in my iPhone's Gmail app or in iTunes. Interestingly, neither the iPhone or iTunes squawked about it. Once I caught this and changed it, I found that my contacts on Google (of course) hadn't been syncing >and< strangely wouldn't catch up.

I'm thinking I need to delete all my contacts on Google and attempt a re-sync, but I'm concerned that iTunes will attempt to sync with the empty Google list and wipe my contacts off the phone. Does anybody know if iTunes will ask before doing this? Or is there a better way to get the out-of-sync contacts back in sync?

Where are they out of sync at, on your iPhone or on Google (which one is more up to date)? If on Google, then remove the account then readd on your iPhone (or uncheck the sync box, sync, check box back and sync again if using iTunes instead of Mobile Sync). If the phone is more up to date, you are going to have to sync to your computer and have it sync with Google then sync back to your phone - there is no way to have the phone directly replace Google (that I am aware of).

The phone is more up-to-date than Google. Google got left in the dust as I made changes to the phone and synced to my computer that weren't communicated to Google. It seems that when I re-enabled Google with a new password, it should have noticed the phone/iTunes was different and more recent. It didn't pick up the updated stuff when I synced the phone to iTunes.

Do you know if Google will wipe out my contacts on the phone when I sync it via iTunes if I've deleted all the contacts from Google via my computer? Or will it be smart enough to warn me first?

It depends on how you sync it, iTunes will warn you either way. If you are using iTunes you are either going through your Address Book program (Google <> Address Book <> iTunes <> iPhone) or you are using the Google Account option under Address Book in iTunes (Google <> iTunes <> iPhone).

Personally, I use the Google Mobile Sync / Exchange option - much easier

If you correct it three times, it adds it - there is no way to manually edit it currently (at least without access to the file system).

There is a way to delete all your custom spelling words, by going to the settings>general>reset> reset keyboard dictionary. This will dellete ALL words you have typed on the keyboard and set back to factory defaults.

Opening wmv attachments

I have strange problem which came up today. Here is the scenario: I have received an email with .wmv attachment. Now when I tap the attachment to open it, I get 2 options- open with Goodreader & open with PDF reader. When I tap either the attachment doesn't open.

I had opened the attachment yesterday with native media player. Then why today? And these options never came up.

Incidentally I updated PDF reader with new update today morning.

How do I get these things off?

App syncing

I am noticing that iTunes does not want to sync my apps and folders.

It seems to want to sync some random arrangement that is not what I have created on my iPhone.

Not sure if this is what you are experiencing, but here is what I have noticed on my both my iPad and iPhone when syncing apps:

The scenario is:
(1) I delete some of the apps from the APPS list in iTunes using the 'delete key' on my keyboard and I select option to 'leave the files' instead of 'remove to trash'.

(2) The apps that I deleted do not show up as an option in my 'apps tab' when connecting a device. I sync and those apps are removed from the device, which is what I wanted.

(3) However, when I check for updates and update all via the option at the bottom of the iTunes Apps Window in iTunes, these 'deleted' apps (which I assume must still be on my purchase list with Apple) get added back into the Apps list as 'new apps' and I assume are then recognized as 'new apps'.

(4) Since I have 'Sync new apps' option checked, they get put back onto my devices with the subsequent sync. This is evident on my iPhone as they appear as icons that are not in any folder. On my iPad since all the pages are full, they appear when I use a spotlight search and are clickable from the search list and can be run.

There seems to still be some problems with app syncing as far as I can tell.

I realize I didn't really give enough details.

I had synced previously without issue. Then when I noticed the sync apps box was not checked, I checked it, and it warned me that it would overwrite the apps on the iphone, which seemed odd.

Also, the view (in iTunes) of the apps as they are on the iphone changed to some random arrangement without any of the folders I have and with different apps selected.

This is very similar to one of the posts I saw on the apple discussions page. I did not perform the sync with the apps.

Details - IPhone 4. All updates done.

Problem: occasionally the connection will "hang". I'll be checking email - will start and not finish. Using Safari, page may start to open, then stall. Facebook app - same issue. eBay app - same issue.

Other Wi-Fi devices in the home do not do this - so it is not a router issue, I don't think.

How I fix it - go into iPhones settings. Turn Wi-Fi off, then back on. Now it works again. It may last a while (hours, a day perhaps, sometimes no more than 15 or 30 minutes), but eventually it will hang again.

Usually only 1 Wi-Fi device is connected at a time; it is password protected, so it's not others logging in, either.

Is the Router's firmware up to date? I have a Linksys 610N dual band router and am currently only using the 2.4 gig freq. WEP2. It works perfectly with my iPhones. My WiFi was problematic (and exhibited the symptoms you've outlined with 2 other PCs) until I found the new firmware.

Being new to iPhones and only recently took the plunge into Apple gear with the purchase of an iPhone 4, I don't know what the iPhone 3 network protocol is, but it might be worth looking into if your router firmware is, indeed, up to date.

iPod starts playing randomly

Anyone have any suggestions on how to stop the iPod function to stop randomly playing? Sometimes my iPhone 4 is in my pocket and starts playing the last song I was playing. Sometimes I'm using another app and the music starts playing. Any thoughts?

This has happened to me, when I have played the ipod and not quit. You can double tap the home key, bringing up the icons that are being used by the multitasking capabilities of your iphone and press on the ipod icon until it wiggles and close it out by tapping the minus sign.

Do you have an app like an alarm clock that plays tunes that might be set somehow to start playing your iPod?

Another, scenario ... you accidentally hit the home button once that brings up the spotlight search window on the iPhone, where you have searched prior for a song and they are listed. Brushing one of the songs will start it to play. It seems this has also happened to me, when I have accidentally.

I ended up ordering the search choices under settings>General>spotlight search> You can move the order of search results with the triple bars on the right hand side or uncheck those you don't want to show up in the search. Move the music down in the list order and or try removing it from your spotlight search results if you don't need to search for songs.

The first thing I check when it happened was my alarms but nothing was set. I will try to reorder the spotlight search but I don't think that was it since I wasn't using the phone when it happened most recently. It was sitting on my lap with the screen black.

Also, it always plays the last song that I was playing. I've started making my sleep music be the last song before exiting the iPod app so at least when the music start playing, it's very quiet. :-)

Here is another scenario, that might be occurring, since it is always the last song you played.

You have played a song using the ipod icon. You quit or stop the song. This seems to be the case even if you exit by the wiggle method as well.

Ok, you double tap your home button accidentally and the multitasking view of icons running are shown. You also swipe to the right and the controls for the ipad are then visible. You brush the play button.

I know this sounds like a lot of accidentally pressing and pushing stuff to happen. But it has happened to me just putting my iphone down on the nightstand or into my purse.

That is about all I can suggest. LOL

It's very random. It hasn't happened since about 1pm today. But it happened on earlier in the day too. I know if you double tap the home button when the screen is dark, that brings up the iPod controls. I tried to triple tap but that doesn't make it play. You still have to touch the screen on the play button.

Use three fingers and double tap on that zoomed screen. It should go to normal size. You have evidently set your zoom to ON in the settings>general>accessibility> zoom options.

You can turn the zoom OFF or remember that anytime you double tap with three fingers you will zoom and doing the same again gets it back to normal.

It is likely that Accessibility Options are tuned on. With the phone on push on the home button 3 times. Then you can turn on or off voiceover, zoom, and white on black.

voice mail message to "emailable" version

I have a lengthy voice mail message on my Iphone 4 from my Vet with detailed recovery instructions for my dog. All good news!

I tried to forward the voice mail to my wife's Iphone 3G but did not see/hear an option.

Is there a way to "download" that voice mail into a format that could be emailed to her?

Not sure why my reply to this did not go through. If you are on a Macintosh, there is a software package called phoneview that can be found via googling.

You can demo for 7 days and it has the capability of downloading the voicemail to your computer. The file will be mp4 format and can be emailed.

Hope this helps. If you are using PC, you might be able to find a similar product. I tried the demo for Mac and it worked fine. I have purchased software from this developer before and find them reliable products.

I am assuming that you and your wife are not in the same location. Otherwise you could just let your wife listen to the instructions. Why not have her call the Vet or ask the Vet to email the instructions to her?

I don't know of one app that will do that all, but there are apps that will convert voice to dictation, and others that will save the voice mail to your computer. How to pay it back to that say Dragon Dictation can convert it to a text file would be simple logistics.

I use PhoneView from ecamm.com, $20, to copy various things from the iPhone to my Mac, including voicemails, and call logs.

Getting the vet and someone on the phone at same time can be tough.

They have a 7 day demo that works to transfer files. It loaded my voicemail and then I was able to select the voicemail that I wanted to copy to my desktop. It copies it to desktop as mp4 file. You would then be able to email this to whoever.

I am using a Mac. Not sure but believe this is good for Macs only. There maybe something similar for PC's.

I have used software made by this company for my isight camera on a Macintosh years ago and find them to be a reliable software developer for some of these type solutions that aren't readily available.

Hopefully the PC users on this site will be able to offer a suggestion for those who are using PCs.

Phone sound quality

A week and a half ago I got the iPhone 4. While talking on the phone using a bluetooth or directly into the phone, there is quite a bit of static. I don't know if my phone is defective or if this is just part of the iPhone experience.

How is the phone sound quality for you?

Sound is perfect on mine - could be an AT&T problem or iPhone problem, try doing a reset and trying phone with and without speakerphone then try bluetooth again if all 3 of them the same 'static' then make an appointment at the Apple Store...

Apples and Oranges - these are iPhone Apps that control Google Voice which is not a VoIP service, Skype is a telephony provider, Google Voice turns gives you a number that is an "inbox" and allows you to divert calls to cell, home, work, or even a Skype number.

this morning I seen a song on itunes I knew my friend was looking for so when i clicked on the option TELL A FRIEND..it asked me to log in ..so i did and then it kept asking me over and over ,i had the correct password and user name and it fact it never even said i have entered the wrong password or user name.it just kept asking me to log in and not allowing me to use the tell a friend option.

Every once in a while, I will get that when I have tried to download something directly onto the device. The advice that I have gotten before from someone from this group was to go into iTunes on your computer and sign out and then sign back in again. That has worked for me in the event that the device kept asking me over and over again for my password and log in information. Can't hurt, might want to give that a try. Or maybe someone else has some other suggestions for you.

When I watch a movie that I bought using iTunes, does that use up my Data? I have the 200mb plan.

iPod iTunes
If you download it directly onto the iPhone, that will use data.

If you downloaded it via your PC and then transfered it over, then it's local already and does not use additional data.

I've been playing XStream Tap for a while now. I just picked up a new release called First Stone, that's kind of cool, if your into Dr. Mario and Puyo stile games, free too...

Try some of these games/puzzles: Bix, Words with Friends, Tesserae, Glow Puzzle, Glass Tower 2, Cash Cow, Word Freak, Romi, and Orbium. They are all pretty fun and challenging. Many have a lite version to try them or are free.
