iPhone, iOS 5 date

Does anyone have a iOS 5 date or is it available to us yet(non-developers).

All they have said is "Fall" - my guess would be the third week in September probably 16th or 19th.

Nope - Lion (OS X 10.7 is July) - iOS 5 will have 3-4 more betas at 2-3 weeks apart so at least 3 months...

In July is all I recall. I am running iOS 5 beta 2 as a developer and it's by no means ready for prime time.

Nope that is Lion that is coming out in July - iOS they only said "Fall" it will ship a couple days before (and on) the 5th Gen iPhone 5 (and likely 5th Gen iPod Touch) which should be around the third Friday in September which in past years was the annual Music Event / iPod Announcement and they pushed this year back so that 5th Gen iPhone will be out for the holiday quarter.

Now iMessage users on iOS 5 Beta 2 will not be able to send messages to users on iOS 5 beta 1. We’re not quite sure why Apple did this, as nothing else seems to have changed with iMessage as a whole.

If you have albums without any artwork, a new blank album image is put in its place.

Settings
The iCloud icon has changed in the Settings app. Does it look better? Let us know what you think.

WiFi Syncing
Probably the most exciting feature of the build is that iOS 5 Beta 2 finally enables WiFi syncing for Mac users (no Windows support yet), the feature requires iTunes 10.5 Beta 2 and OS X 10.6.8 or Lion. The feature seems to be enabled automatically if your iDevice is connected to a power source and paired to the same network as your computer. We detailed how to use it yesterday.

Furthermore you can enable the feature upon connecting your newly updated device to iTunes for its first sync.

The build seems more stable and we hope it is lighter on the battery. Overall the update is not as exciting as we had hoped with Newsstand still inactive and no WiFi sync for Windows users. However, there may be more in this release just waiting to be uncovered. Needless to say there is still a lot more testing to do and upcoming builds will definitely have something in store. Does the current iOS (4.3.3) drain the iPhone's battery?

I remember when the latest iPhone iOS (I think it was 4.3 ???) came out, people complained that it drained their battery. For that reason, I haven't upgraded the iOS on my 3GS and I'm currently using 4.2.1.

(1) Does the current iOS, (4.3.3) drain your iPhone's battery?

(2) Should I stay with my current 4.2.1 and wait until iOS 5 to update my phone?

The latest iOS 4 does not have a battery drain issue that I am aware of - there was an issue with Ping that was fixed with an update after it was released. Updating to the latest version is not going to prevent you from updating to iOS 5 and that was just released to beta so it is a good 3 or 4 months away so unless you have some reason to stay where you are at, I would upgrade.

I have a 3GS running 4.3.3 and I can get through a day on one charge. Especially if I have 3G and any GPS app turned off. It is no more battery hungery than 4.2.

How long can you go before not updating your applications?

How many applications need updating?

I would think you'd want to update them whenever they become available.

This depends on the application. Some make use of the developers' servers, and theoretically they may eventually stop supporting significantly older versions of their app. Other apps simply reside on your iPhone without interacting with outside data sources, but those may need updating when you upgrade to a newer version of iOS.

I update each time one of my 165 apps is revised, simply because I want the most functional version of an app. The rare glitch (from a bug-riddled revision) has not convinced me to wait longer or be more selective.

iPhone 3GS Reset message

My friend has an iPhone 3GS which he plans to give to his son. He wanted to clear off the personal data.

He went to Settings/General/Reset and chose the "Erase all Content and Settings".

It erased everything on the machine including the OS. This is a very poorly worded message and there are no questions asked to make sure that this is what you really want to do. It should have at least one or two nanny messages to make sure you want to nuke everything.

Something like: Are you sure you want to loose your OS?

Have you made a backup so that when you have done the restore, you can get your data back?

I have never seen a computer that had a "Destroy All" button except in the movies.

He has spent most of the day getting it to restore and it forced him to update to the latest version of the OS and Baseband.

This is not user friendly.

I have not used that, but it did say "erase all", not factory reset.

I believe that you can do a factory reset with iTunes.

The reset just put the 3GS back to out of box condition, it did not erase the original rom. New owner may have to up date again.

Note:
The only way this could happen if a another modified OS was installed and the the original was not reinstalled, if this is the case the phone is then a nice paper weight.

Use Google and look up the message "Erase all Content and Settings".

This button treats all operating systems equally in that they are gone when done.

Reset removes all apps, data, and settings. It does not remove the iOS. What does your screen look like after you finished the reset?

Can't download upgraded iOS

I've gone to iTunes to download the new iOS 4.3, but can't seem to get it. When I search for iOS 4.3 I get a game app. I guess I'm just feeling extra stupid today. What do I need to do to get the new OS so I can sync it to my phone?

I always start iTunes and connect the iOS device (iPhone in my case). If there's an update available iTunes tells me; if I want to check I click the Update button (under Summary).

Have you updated your iTunes. You must up date to 10.2.1 before iOS 4.3 will be available to you. Also, iOS 4.3 will only install on an iPhone 3GS or 4. I don't believe it will install on a Verizon iPhone.

I updated my iPhone 4 to iOS 4.3 this morning before leaving for work. Update went very smoothly with no issues.

Granted it's only been about nine hours of usage so far but my battery seems to be draining much faster than normal. I haven't turned on any battery draining apps or changed any settings that I know of. Is anyone else on iOS 4.3 seeing this or am I just imagining this?

I have been running it since beta 1 and haven't noticed anything. You may want to backup do it as a restore instead of an upgrade then restore your backup and resync.

Yeah - when you upgrade it installs on top of whats there whereas a restore reformats the system and the backup tells it what to put back on and where.

Yet, I'm reading messages on the list about an update to 4.3.

Is there another way to get the OS update?

I also have something strange going on with this.

I have an 1Phone 4 with GSM and installed the new update yesterday, but am seeing none of the updated features.

Big example is that I have a new Apple TV . I downloaded the software update for it last night, but I am not seeing the TV airplay icon in Camera Roll. It's just like it was before the update, i.e. Apple TV plays the audio of a video in Camera Roll but not the Video.

There is no evidence as far as I can see that there are any changes.

Anybody else having this problem ?

There have been many times where we started downloading an app only to realize its excessive size and wanted to cancel. Unfortunately until now, we was just stuck with it on our homescreen until it finally completes or somehow disappears after a reboot.

It is quite simple to use the feature. All we have to do is enter the
icon arrangement mode (Wiggle mode as we normally do to delete an
app. This time however, we'll notice the appear over the currently
downloading app as well. Just hit it, confirm and iOS will proceed to
interrupt the download and delete the app.

I doubt... I believe the purchase is made before it starts downloading.
The only benefit here is it solves the problem of having a "ghost" icon being

Is there a specific way to address this problem. Should they be deleted from iPhone before installing new iOS and then reinstalled.

When you install the new iOS it will wipe the iPhone, so make sure you back up all your data. That includes copying your photos and other things to your computer that iTunes does not backup or sync.

After the new iOS is installed then power cycle the iPhone. Then sync it. The apps should work.

That they don't work with the new iOS is rare, but it is on the developers end. The ones that don't have not been updated by the developer. Contact the developer for information on how to get them to work again or when they will be updated.

What I don't understand - why on earth would I want to create a wifi hotspot? I see this commercial where someone sits down, creates a hotspot, and everybody around them starts using it. I have a hard enough time keeping spammers, pedophiles, porn0graphers, phishers, keyboard loggers, trojan horses, and other scum out of my affairs as it is without giving them wifi access through my phone. Wouldn't they also be bandwidth vampires running up my data usage and costing me additional fees?

What am I missing here?

You password protect it and I know many full time rvers who use hotspots to connect at least two computers to the internet. I'm sure there are others who use all five connections.

You would have the option of password protecting your hotspot so you could, for instance, use it with your wifi laptop but no one else could use it.

I don't know why the commercials show a bunch of random people in the park using it. Makes no sense to me.

It would be like when I use my Sprint Overdrive. It is a 4G WiFi Hot Spot.

It is password protected so I can use my MacBook Pro or MacBook Air on it.

The EVO from Sprint dose that and Droid X on Verizon. On my iPhone I do not care if it has a Hot Spot since I do have a Overdrive.

The Palm Pre Plus on Verizon also offers the hotspot. I don't know about costs with the Droid, but with the Palm the hotspot is free up to 5 gB. The hotspot was one of the major deciding factors when I upgraded my old phone to the Pre Plus.

I am stuck with Verizon because of coverage issues. I can't WAIT to see if I'll be able to get the new iphone at a reasonable cost.

Last night my power went out (fortunately only for about 10 minutes).

If I had Wifi hotspot capability, I could have activated it and continued online with my laptop, even though the DSL modem and the Airport wireless router were dead.

Advertisers are the ones who got the idea all wrong. They presume that it is still the time of unconditional giving and sacrifice. Well, not with your personal hotspot. You use it for your iPad that has no 3G and your computer. Well, maybe your bestfriend's iPod touch... But not for anyone. That's why it's got password anyway.

These MyFi/Personal Wi-Fi/Personal Hotspots are everywhere where I am. But their commercials just don't get the point why people buy them. Probably the advertising agency's fault.

The alarms on my wife's 3G stopped working today. We have changed times, turned the phone off and then on, made certain the volume is up and the phone is not on silent, and deleted old alarms and created new ones. Nothing seems to be helping to make it work. Any ideas? She is running most current iOS.

I don't know if there is a fix. There was a huge article on yahoo about an apparent alarm glitch. I for one was a victim of the new year alarm fiasco. My alarm didn't go off to wake me up for new years :-(

I don't think so, I'm in Jordan so no AT&T. My iPhone was ok,maybe because I had repeat alarms set (?), but my daughters iPod alarm and sons iPhone had the bug and did not work for those 3 days! In any case, all are working again :)

If you are speaking to Dick and Barbara, They don't have the 3GS, they have the 3G, which only had 128Mb of RAM. iOS 4 bogs down the 3G to a crawl.

I have a 3GS and it works fine with iOS4. The 3GS has 256Mb of RAM and the iPhone 4 has i believe double that.

I will modify what I said, the early versions of iOS 4 bogged the 3G down. That may not be the case with iOS 4.2, but not owning a 3G I can not say.

My son is trying to update iOS 3 to 4 on his iPhone 3G. He gets a message on his MacBook that says he will lose all his media content when he does the update and to be sure to do the update on the computer on which he has all his media that he normally uses to sync the iPhone. I've updated an iPh 3GS and an iPad to iOS 4 before this. The sequence I've seen is that the new OS is downloaded to the computer, and then, if the iPhone is connected, it will automatically update the phone. If not, you can attach and download onto the phone later. Never have I seen this message previously.

1) What actually happens when we download the iOS 4 update in terms of media content (movies, photos, music)? The update obviously d/loads to the computer, but does it then wipe the media content, or only when it (new OS) is transferred to the phone?
2) If we have the identical media content on the phone and computer prior to the new OS downloading, what is left (if anything) on the phone and computer after the phone is updated to new OS?

This is probably pretty basic, but this message we received was not especially clear.

I had a 3G and upgraded it to the 4 software. It slowed down my phone TREMENDOUSLY. And others that I have spoken with that have upgraded the 3G have had the same problems (no less than 5 people). My coworker has a 3GS that he upgraded without a problem, but for some reason, the 3G doesn't like that upgrade. I hope he hasn't actually done it as of yet.

I just got the 4G about a month ago and am in love.

ios 4 has support for using a bluetooth keyboard with your iPhone 4. When I turn on bluetooth on my iPhone a 'Devices' panel appears and says 'searching'. It never finds my Apple Bluetooth keyboard though, so I can't pair it. What can I do?

Not an expert, but ensure the keyboard is not paired to anything else. If so disconnect, unpair, whatever called. Fresh batteries, installed the correct way. Don't forget to turn the keyboard on. That's what I had to do the last time.

I was able to pair my iPhone 3GS.

Make sure bluetooth turned on in Settings>General

Hold down the power key on the side of your bluetooth keyboard until the small green light starts blinking.

Once you see 'Apple Wireless Keyboard .. Not Paired' under Devices, then select that a message 'Apple Wireless Keyboard' would like to pair with your iPhone .
Enter a pin XXXX

Type in the pin and you should be paired.

Hope this helps. I think the key is to hold down the power key for awhile on the side of the keyboard.

That trick worked when trying to connect my iPad and my iPhone. If you have it hooked via bluetooth to another device like an iPad, you can 'select the keyboard' and then select 'forget this device' to unconnect.

Key is to hold down the power key for awhile on keyboard. Also you can turn bluetooth off and on to reset the bluetooth as well and then hold down the power button on side of keyboard.

Technically you have to have an iPhone 4, iPod Toch 4th Gen, or iPad running 4.2.1 to initiate the service but once it is initiated, you can use it on all of your iOS devices running 4.2.1

I have a 3 GS And a paid MobileMe subscription but locating the phone is not working. When asked to retype in my password that I just used to sign into my account (and can read emails and contacts) it returns the error -password not valid. That is just for the find my phone.

I am going to call support just wanted to give them some time with all the questions they having about 4.2!! And the holiday rush.

Does anyone else have this problem?Strange that I can access all the other components of mobile me without a hitch. I have tried my iTunes Password and the password to the phone itself.

I can locate my phone when I use the find my phone app on the phone but what good is that? ;-0

Where are you getting the error at - remove the MMe account on your phone and readd with full email address (it used to put @me.com in automatically, it now requires that you enter it since anyone with any email address can access Find My iPhone).

Same thing for me.com and the Find My iPhone App the user id is the full email address including @me.com and the same password you always used.

Here is a "problem" for all the experts to ponder:

I have an iPhone 4 running 4.2.1 and the free find my iPhone service. Find my iPhone works the three or four times I have tried it. But I keep getting "Can not access (user id) check settings". When I check my user ID and password all looks fine.

Software unlocking is what phones that are locked to say AT&T have to do in order ot use them on T-Mobile - it 'unlocks' the base band / modem firmware to work on another carrier.

If you bought a hardware unlocked phone, which I believe is what is available in just about every other country than the US - upgrading will not change that.

It seems my iPhone 4 gets poorer reception at times than my husband's 3GS.....even when we are in the same room. Is it my phone or just how it is sometimes with these phones?

I found the same thing with my iPhone 4 starting right after iOS 4.1. I have found if I turn my iPhone completly off for at least :30 to 1:00 and back on (so it can re-register with the network) I have much better performance. Give it a try.
