iPhone, Amazon books

Does anyone know if it's possible to download ebooks from amazon and read them on an iPad?

Apple iPhone ipadApple iPhone ipad

You can of you use the kindle app.

-----

There is a Kindle App for iPhone & iPad

-----

Just download the free Kindle app and sync the ebook via iTunes and you have the book on your iPad.

-----

Download the Kindle app for iPad. It's free and works great on my iPhone. I don't have an iPad, but it's probably even better on that. I'm not sure about any other ereaders, but most use either epub or mobi formats so they should work too.

iPhone, Photo App Recommendation

I was hoping for a recommendation for a photo app for my iPhone 3GS. I take pictures mostly of my kids/family and both kids swim on a team so I would like an app with a zoom feature.

Apple iPhone appsApple iPhone apps

Try ProShots. It is free and has a zoom.

-----

Camera+, the best, with zoom, I am not sure if it works on a 3GS?

-----

I'll second Camera+. It replaced the default camera app on my first screen.

-----

Your camera app itself should zoom, otherwise ProCamera has worked well for me since it adds some useful features like a grid so I can orient the image as want for the shot. The Photoshop app is also good for basic edits and enhancements; crop, rotate, sepia, etc, etc. Have fun!

iPhone, FOUND Wx Alert USA

Thanks......I found all previously purchased apps under updates. And yes thank you it is now called Wx Alert USA which I searched and now is not available if not previously purchased.

I am so glad I returned that new Samsung and got a new iphone 4. I missed it so much. :)

Enjoy and thanks all !

Apple iPhone appsApple iPhone apps

Ooo! it’s available, you just have to look in the right place.

-----

The correct name of the app is "Weather Alert USA". it is $3.99 and you can find it here:

iPhone apps, NOAA

There used to be an app named NOAA that changed to WX Weather and I can't find
that now. I used to have a 3G and bought a Galexey Tablet. I missed the iphone
so I went a got a iphone 4. This was one of my favorite weather apps.

Apple iPhone appsApple iPhone

I have a lot of weather apps but I'm not familiar with that one. I do love MyWeather and it is free:

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/myweather-mobile/id435025246?mt=8

-----

I like it! MyWeather may be my new go to weather app!

-----

I'm in the UK and I use the free Met Office app.

-----

I use it all the time; one of my favorites. Now it's called Wx Alert USA. The latest version has (had..) audible NOAA weather radio now, but my station quit in the last couple weeks. I'm hoping it gets fixed. The rest of the app works great, though.

-----

I can not find it in the app store.

IPhone Antenna & App pages?

Is the IPhone Antenna in the end
of the phone, top are bottom,
are a wrap around ? ?

# 2, any chance the next Gen.
IPhone my have more pages
to display App's.??

Apple iPhone appsApple iPhone

If it is a iPhone 4 then it is wrap around. but it has several antennas. Different ones for different things, cell, WiFi and BT. Read the manual.

#2, what you've got more than 1536 apps on your iphone? You know about Folders don't you. 8 pages x 16 spaces for folders per page x 12 apps per folder = 1536
apps.

-----

Sorry, no. ELEVEN pages.

11*16*12 = 2112

-----

Don't forget the 4 dock spaces, each of which can be a folder for an additional 48 - 2,150 is the max and I think you can still add more they just wouldn't show up…

-----

Boy, I feel like a Hog with every
one knowing my iPhone 4
is filled with App and I'm asking
for more display App pages.

Sorry friends, it is just I keep
seeing all these neat App's
and I love those that do things
for me! I dare not tell you how
many App's I pull off the Phone
to make room for a new one. ;-}

-----

Yes! I'm NOT the only one!!!

-----

I have 377 Apps on my iPhone, many of which I never get around to using.

-----

Like, I suspect, many of us, I see a reference to an app that seems like a good idea. If it's free, I install it, expecting to try it out when I've got nothing else to do. There are some I've still not tried ...

But, Keith, how many apps do you have, and are they *in folders*?

-----

Why do you have to pull anything off?

If there aren't enough pages, the "extras" will just go in the unseen following pages & you can access them with the search.

But with folders available, you could just stash things in a lot of "look-see-later" folders & try them when you get around to it. Then if you don't want to keep them you can delete, or just move to a "maybe ditch" folder or whatnot.

My iTunes-apps library has >650 apps in it, some only work on the iPad but lots would work on phone/touch. I don't put everything on any one device but before folders came out (last year?) I'd have more than the "visible" pages allowed.

Best Apps?

We just made the switch to iphone 4 (verizon 32G) this week after using BBs for 9 years. So Far so good...

I imagine this is been done, but any suggestions for the best apps that are actually worth getting.

Specifically I am looking for a text short cut app (ex I could type 'sig' and it would put my sig file in). This was a nice feature of the BBs (autotext).

To start, so far my favorites are
(tend to be 'productivity' apps)
Evernote
dropbox
LiveCams
Rmusic (ring tone maker)
Pandora

Apple iPhone appsApple iPhone

While I think the new iOS will take care of the autotext feature, TextExpander also does that. You make snippets of letters that will then expand to full paragraphs if you want.

-----

Yup - in new iOS - works nicely as well - saves many a tap while writing emails or texting. Can even do entire signatures, etc

iPhone Video App

I am looking for an iPhone app that will give me the best possible video while bike riding. Anyone know of one that uses the anti-shake equipment built in the iPhone?

Apple iPhone video appsApple iPhone

Try Camera+ from tap tap tap

-----

What "anti-shake equipment built in the iPhone" do you mean?

-----

Steady lens. You can try it for free 15 second clips. Or if you like it buy it.

-----

Thank you all, I will try these apps. I even think I have Camera Plus on my phone. I didn't know it did video.

Weather warning app?

Does anyone know of an app to monitor weather & give warnings like the weather radios do. I have a friend who is going to be traveling in tornado country soon.

Apple iPhone appsApple iPhone

-----

You really need an app that is location aware. I like MyWeather. You can set up to push warnings for your current location. I am sure there are many more.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/myweather-mobile/id435025246?mt=8

-----

Most of them? Weatherbug and Weather Channel, at least, have Alerts from the NWS. I don't know off hand how well they'll get your attention on an alert if you're not already looking at the program. But hey, they're both freeware so it costs nothing to try them.

-----

I have this one:

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/weather-alert-usa/id314502416?mt=8

Weather Alert USA. It is very nice. You can set up many different alerts for any zip code or use your current location. It has alerts for tornadoes, thunderstorms, earthquakes, evacuations and many more.

The sound for "high alert" is the same sound that comes across tvs and radios.

-----

Imap weather looks very good for this function.

-----

+1 on Weather Alert USA. I use it and like it. You can also get weather radio broadcasts from it.

Thanks to all for the input on weather warning apps.

iOS, Apps, Application Updates

Apple iPhone iOSApple iPhoneHow long can you go before not updating your applications?

How many applications need updating?

I would think you'd want to update them whenever they become available.

-----

This depends on the application. Some make use of the developers' servers, and theoretically they may eventually stop supporting significantly older versions of their app. Other apps simply reside on your iPhone without interacting with outside data sources, but those may need updating when you upgrade to a newer version of iOS.

I update each time one of my 165 apps is revised, simply because I want the most functional version of an app. The rare glitch (from a bug-riddled revision) has not convinced me to wait longer or be more selective.

-----

Wow.
ONLY 165 apps!
I really need to trim my collection!

General Security Apps

Apple iPhone appApple iPhoneWhat is the best app to download for security on the iPhone please?

1. In iTunes, when your iPhone is connected, at the bottom of the Summary screen, be sure "Encrypt iPhone Backup" is < checked >.

2. Setup a VPN (I like Hotspot Shield for iPhone). And activate it whenever you use an unsecured Wifi hotspot.

-----

However, note that it is impossible to encrypt the actual iPhone itself, which is the only 100% secure method for securing your iPhone.

-----

How are you defining security? Because like mentioned before the iPhone can't be completely secured. You can encrypt your backups from prying eyes and you can use encrypted password applications but the phone is still unencrypted even if you have a passcode lock. If someone has a phone phone extraction device like the Cellbrite UFED they can grab your data rather quickly.

I tried hard reboot of the phone and still get the same message or " cannot connect to iTunes store". Anybody else having a problem??

I had trouble but it is now working for me.

-----

QR Readers

Apple iPhone QR readerApple iPhone ReaderAny suggestions for a decent QR Code Reader? I primarily would like to read vcards, websites, and to make my own codes for things like contacts. I briefly checked out the App Store but there are quite a few different ones.

The one I have on my phone is the QRCodeReader (all one word).

-----

Been pretty happy with BeeTag Reader Pro which is free and you can create all sorts of codes on their site. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/beetagg-reader-pro/id313157282?mt=8

-----

I just downloaded a free one this morning that seems to work well. It is
called Tapreader. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tapreader-qr-code-reader/id361843945?mt=8

-----

The one I use, I think was free or $0.99 is just named QRCode and works from either the camera or stored images so you can save items to camera roll and 'read' in the future...

Apple Wireless Keyboard

Apple iPhone keyboardApple iPhonewhat to do if the shift key on the keyboard stops working? I looked up in apple support but all I found out is yes, it isn't working.

Is it not working at all, in any app / program, etc? Is it both shift keys or just one? If just one isn't working and it is under warranty take it to an Apple store - if it isn't then it may be time to buy a new one. If it is both try calling Apple Support. Keyboards/mice/etc don't last forever.

iPhone - Facebook App

Apple iPhone appApple iPhoneHaving issues seeing all the comments for threads on my phone. Can someone else who uses FB with long threads check theirs too. I see 18 comments but when I click to read there are 2 visible.

iOS 4.21 on 3GS with 32 gig

-----

No problems on my end, Claudia. You might try logging off and then back in. If that doesn't work, try removing the app and download it again.

-----

I have a different problem with the Facebook app. I will get notices about comments on pictures, but the comments won't show when I check Notifications.

I have to go to my profile and look at the post that way...

If I go to the picture and do the pull-down/refresh, it won't do anything.

A bit frustrating, but considering with this little device I watched Butler win in the first round of the men's Final Four this weekend, I can't really complain!

-----

Look for a "more" button.

-----

I am running Facebook Ver. 4.3 on iOS 4.3.1 and I do not have any problem seeing all the comments. I have an iPhone 4.

-----

Yes. I noticed that too. In Groups. Only the latest two comments appear. It started on the update before the last.

iHome Radio and iPhone 3GS

Apple iPhone - iHome Radio and iPhone 3GS - No Love No Mo'

I have an iHome radio http://www.ihomeaudio.com/iP90BZ/
http://www.ihomeaudio.com/iP90BZ/ ) I use at work. I keep my iPhone plugged in all day, and listen to music or podcasts.

I'm not sure what exactly happened, but I did a system restore a couple weeks ago. I also recently upgraded to iTunes 10.x (whatever the latest version is), and somehow the radio and the iPhone are not loving each other. If I had my phone on vibrate, I could plug it on the radio, and get the double-buzz indicating it was set and locked. I could listen to my tunes, and no trouble.

Now, it doesn't seem to recognize it at all. The only way I know there is a connection is the battery indicator has the lightning bolt on it, and if the battery is down, I can see it charge up.

iPhone Radio
Apple iPhone RAdio
Two things, the double buss is not "set and lock" but "thank you for plugging me in to charge". Listen to it, it is saying "Thank you."

The other is have you inspected the 30-pin connector on the phone for pocket lint or something else blocking a few of the pins? This is starting to come up on other lists.

-----
Sorry for my word choice... but I knew the iPhone was connected by the vibration.

As for lint - I was just at an Apple store a few weeks back, and they checked the slot at the bottom and the headphone jack for lint. All was good. I used some canned air today just to see if anything was in the charging slot, then plugged the phone into the iHome radio. No vibration or anything - just the lightning bolt.

-----
Try the other end of the phone... sounds like something is making the phone think its in earphone mode. See if there's something in the earphone jack receptacle.

-----
Sound plays fine when not plugged in... and I've had headphones plugged in that work properly. So, I don't believe it's either suggestion.

I'm starting to think the phone is on its last legs. I'm not sure if I want to keep the iPhone (go for iPhone 4) or get a Droid on Verizon. Hearing lots of compelling arguments on both sides.

-----
No worries about the choice of words, some times I am just stubborn and others dense.

So the connector and the jack are not plugged, and you get sound when off the iHome, so the jack is not broken.

This is a basic, but sometimes we forget to check. Is the iHome volume turned up or on mute? Is it set to use the iPhone as the source? When I plug-in the 30-pin connector in my truck, the volume knob on the radio takes control of my 3GS's iPod.app.

I'm hoping it is something silly, rather than expensive.

-----
To get trashed emails back:1 tap arrow upper left Mailboxes 2 pull inboxes up past all inboxes to reveal Accounts with colored icons for email providers(gmail, hotmail, aol etc). Tap on icon for mail you want back. 4 the fourth line down is trash. 5 tap and trashed emails are listed. That's the place.

-----
That's great for Mail.app on a Mac, but not on a iPhone. There are no arrows and no Trash Folder.

BTW the subject line was "iHome Radio and iPhone 3GS ".

-----
I've been wondering about that. Over the last 2-3 days I've been getting a few replies obviously in the wrong threads. As this is most unusual (although people trying to start new threads just by changing the subject line is not), I wondered if Gmail was mixing up my "conversations". It appears not, so is it a problem with using the mail app on the iPhone?

-----
It's there. I can't think of any other word to describe the thing at the top left screen except it says mailbox. I'm sorry to have put my answer under the wrong topic. I just wanted to help you but I'm guess I unable explain it.

-----
Always try a reboot. Funny things happen.

Travel Apps for London and Paris

Apple iPhone - Recommendations for Travel Apps for London and Paris

Any recommendations for apps that would be useful for a family vacation to London and Paris. Particularly apps that don't require wireless access to work as we don't want to pay the high roaming data rates.

Kids are 9 and 6.

But even more, use iTunes to download Rick Steve's podcasts, Rick Steves' Paris Audio Tours (particularly The Louvre, the Orsay, and Versailles, plus the neighborhood guides). You'll be able to bypass the rented audio guides and enjoy a professional tour of the museums' highlights.

In London, the podcast London's Best Free Walks offers you tours around a host of neighborhoods. Rick Steves also offers London Audio Tours, but they were released after my last London vacation, so I cannot vouch for them directly.

Thanks. Had already downloaded the Rick Steve's podcasts as we had gotten his paper guide book for London.

I'm not sure what you mean. The iPhone has no FM receiver so any "radio" app can work only using 3G or Wi-Fi.

I think he means similar to that of the iPod nano...

I don't think so since I don't think the iPhone has an FM receiver.

New CBC app

Apple iPhone - New CBC app

I downloaded the new CBC app last week on my 3gs/v4.2.1, and all it does is show me the splash screen, and then shuts down. That's all it does...

Is anybody else having the same problems with this app.

iPhone Apps
Apple iPhone Apps
Delete it from the iPhone and re-install it.

-----
Yes, that was the first thing I did, but no change...same result...

-----
Have you tried powering your iPhone down and then back on? Sometimes when a new app is loaded on, you need to essentially reboot or power off and reboot to get the app to work properly,

-----
Yes, did that, no change.

I did call the CBC, and they tell me that they know of the problem and are working to fix it....Don't hold your breath...
