iPhone, Amazon books

Does anyone know if it's possible to download ebooks from amazon and read them on an iPad?

Apple iPhone ipadApple iPhone ipad

You can of you use the kindle app.

-----

There is a Kindle App for iPhone & iPad

-----

Just download the free Kindle app and sync the ebook via iTunes and you have the book on your iPad.

-----

Download the Kindle app for iPad. It's free and works great on my iPhone. I don't have an iPad, but it's probably even better on that. I'm not sure about any other ereaders, but most use either epub or mobi formats so they should work too.

iTunes Search, iPhone, iPad App Organization..

Use iTunes Search for Easier iPhone and iPad App Organization [IPhone]

iPhone/iPod touch/iPad: Rearranging apps is much easier in iTunes on your computer than it is on your iOS device itself. Macworld offers a little-known trick for even simpler app organization: use the iTunes search box to quickly find the apps to drag around.

Apple iPhone itunesApple iPhone itunes

Am I missing something with this? The only thing I've ever gotten from searching for an app this way is the app showing up in the left-side list. Then I can check or uncheck it. As far as searching to find what screen it's on, the search doesn't show that.

-----

There are screens on the right side once you sync the Apps and you can move, arrange in groups or on screens, etc.

iPhone, iPad on Same Computer

Greetings all, Can an iPhone and iPad share the same computer, yet have seperate
applications and music? Can they also share apps?

Apple iPhone ipad computerApple iPhone ipad computer

Yes they can.

While the default is everything on all devices, by selecting an attached device and then it's tabs, you can set exactly what apps, music, fotos, movies, etc. are sync'ed to it.

Requires little effort.

It just works.

-----

I have a friend with the exact same "problem." Her nine-year-old son has an iPod Touch, and she has an iPad. She is not too technological, but wants to make sure her music playlists stay on the iPad, and not the iTouch and he keeps his Scooby Doo videos on the Touch, and not her iPad. :)

So, if there are some key points, things to do on this etc., that would be very helpful.

-----

Yes, you can have several iP* devices on the same computer, sharing the same iTunes account &/or library.

They can share any apps, music, books, videos, etc. that you want (as long as the particular iP* can handle the item) or they can have all different, or a mix, or whatever. In order to share items they have to use the same iTunes library. To share iStore items they have to be on the same account. (this is probably clear as mud....)

When you go to set up a new device, give it a name that you'll know which it is (I have two iTouches of different generations, two old iPods of different types, an iPad & an iPhone -- so far!). Then go through all the tabs & choose what to put on it. I vary what goes on each device by what I use it for (& of course what it will take.)

And none of the choices is set in concrete -- you can change any of them on the next sync if you want, & keep tweaking until you get things just the way you want.

IPad 2 vs Kindle

Anyone used both of these to read books? I am seriously thinking of switching to ebooks instead of paper.

Which is really better for reading in daylight and artificial light?

Nothing to compare. The iPad has a kindle app. I've been using the app on my iPod touch and iPhone since it first came out. Otherwise I'd have ten times more bookshelves in my living room. ;o)

I have both. Kindle is good if all you wanna do is read books! If you want to do other things then iPad is the way to go. I just got my iPad 2 yesterday and it's awesome!

Daylight? kindle

Apple iPhoneApple iPhone

I had a Kindle first, then got an iPad. I vastly prefer my iPad and am in the process of selling my Kindle to a friend, BUT the answer to your question depends on your needs.

The Kindle is definitely best if you're planning to do a lot of reading outdoors in sunlight. It's also smaller and lighter, not to mention much cheaper, so if all you're looking for is a dedicated ebook reader, the Kindle is probably a good choice.

Both Kindle and iPad are equally good for reading in artificial light. Some people like the e-ink display better (on the Kindle). I have a bit of a bone to pick with some ebook reader apps on the iPad, because the app developer has written the app with a rather glaring white background (I'm thinking of GoodReader at the moment) which can be hard on the eyes for long reading, rather than the softer gray of the Kindle, which is kinder to the eyes. BUT the tradeoff is a larger reading surface on the iPad and a much easier, friendlier page-turning and nagivation interface.

The iPad is definitely more versatile and all-purpose, obviously. It has more memory and a larger screen, which is nice for me as I'm visually impaired, and is backlit, which I prefer. It's NOT good for reading in the sun, which I never do. I would say I use my iPad about 60% for reading. I like the versatility of other uses, I like the larger memory, I like the ability to see color on the iPad, but the outstanding feature for me is that via various ebook reader apps, I can literally read any ebook format out there, including my own Word documents and including my entire previous library from my Kindle. I can check out .epub books from my library. The Kindle only supports a limited set of ebook formats, so you either have to be careful where you get your ebooks, or you have to get all your ebooks from Amazon, or you have to be careful to buy only non-DRM'ed ebooks that can be converted using a program like Mobipocket Publisher or Calibre.

One downer. The Kindle app for iPad (or Kindle for PC, etc.) does NOT support collections, so your Kindle library is only organized by author or title. I think this is deliberate on Amazon's part, to make it more desirable to buy a Kindle. It's extremely annoying if you have a large library of ebooks, as I have.

-----

Thanks so much for very good info. I want to play games, too, so iPad would be great. AND I have a LOT of apps already for iPhone 4 which will work on iPad.

-----

This very same question came up on another list, and the best reply I have seen is the following which I will quote without asking permission from John Kessler:

"The Kindle's advantage is in the display technology it uses, called digital paper. The digital paper display looks like a sheet of blank white paper but it can be written to (black only) electronically. Once written, a black pixel will remain on the "paper" even with the power off. It must be electronically cleared to erase it. That means the Kindle writes a page, then powers down. This results in excellent battery life and like a printed piece of paper, it is easier to read in bright light but harder to read in dim light. It can not do fast graphic updates so it can't do motion graphics.

This makes the Kindle ideal for displaying Black and White text and static black and white images. In short it is an excellent way to store and read books. It does that one thing very well.

If reading books is all you plan to use an iPad for, then the Kindle is for you. If you intend to spend a lot of time at the beach reading books, the kindle is for you.

If you intend to mainly read books in the comfort of your home, and want to be able to do more than that, the iPad can do what the Kindle does and much more.

At the price of the Kindle, it may be worth having both if the advantages of digital paper seem useful to you."

I do not have an iPad, but I know that trying to read an iPhone in bright daylight can be difficult. If you want to do anything more than just read text, then the iPad is your choice.

-----

The times I've seen an actual Kindle, it didn't look all that bright-white to me; more like that slightly-dingy-grey that the laundry detergent ads bemoan. The contrast just wasn't there. I've seen this in Best Buy, for example, which is pretty brightly lit, & found myself peering-squinting. (maybe it's my aging eyes :-))

Since I'm rarely trying to e-read in bright light (& for dead-tree reading, I like *lots* of watts in my lightbulbs) -- I'm mostly indoors & I *do* know how to turn off the lights! -- I really really like the well-backlit iPad; I also read on my iPhone or iTouch at times. Even if I'm in a bright-ish place (standing in line somewhere, waiting for a bus, etc.) I can turn myself well enough to see for the time being, since it's only a short while.

Much of my iPad reading is on the exercycle, where I don't want the room lights up bright anyway. Nice to turn the lights down low & escape into my little corner with only the iPad for company as I pedal away. A Kindle would not only have the lighting problem, it's small enough that I'd have to hold on to it (rather than prop up on the rack) unless I turned up the print size big enough that there'd only be about 5 words on a page. Page turning speed on iPad is great, too.

I'd get a Kindle & load it up if I were going on a longish trip with iffy recharging availability. Otherwise, I'll stick with my iPad & its kin.

-----

Very good information. I rarely sit in the sun; I am very fair, so I burn easily. I am an air conditioner person!!! I believe the iPad is for me. Now I just have to break down and spend the money! . I really like my iPhone 4!!!

-----

I have the kindle app on both my iPhone 4 & on my iPod touch (3rd gen) and my laptop. Don't need to wait for the iPad. You can register up to 5 devices with the kindle app. You can sync all of them when reading so you can pick up where you left off on each.

-----

I have a Sony 650 and a Nook Color. I rejected Kindle because (at the time) it didn't support free books like Gutenberg Project, Google, and public library. I didn't like that you were tied to Amazon. The other 2 take PDF. Like you, I felt the Kindle screen looked rather dull grey and not at all appealing.

I love my Nook Color, which is easy to read in any light. It also has some apps and is wi-fi enabled. Both Sony and Nook can hold tons of books, but the Sony is lighter and easier to carry. Prices of books seem to be more or less the same now. Kindle used to be cheaper. IPad would definitely be an excellent choice if price isn't a major factor. Nook Color has some of the features but only costs about $250.

Original iPad or iPad2

My husband received a gift of an iPad 64gb, wifi and 3G. We both have iPhones with unlimited data. We can't afford a data plan for the iPad. Do you think we ought to exchange it for an iPad2 with wifi only? We don't need the 64gb, we could use 32gb. It is about the same price.

Apple iPhone ipadApple iPhone-----

If you can exchange it for a 2, you will find it significantly faster & lighter. Plus you get cameras for FaceTime or Skype video conferencing. No contest decision!

-----

I just went to the store where it was purchased. They have no ipad2's and the original credit card that was used would be credited. This was a gift from my husband's boss. He doesn't want them to know that he is exchanging it and they said it takes 2 months to get refund and we would have to pay upfront for them to order the ipad2. Well, the ipad was free so we will keep it. Thanks.

-----

You could always sell the iPad on eBay or Craigslist and purchase an iPad 2 at some point in the future...

-----

"This was a gift from my husband's boss."

Key sentence here. Keep the gift, maybe a year or so from now sell it and upgrade but since it was a gift, keep it and enjoy. IPad 1 is a great device and the cameras on the 2 are really not that good.

-----

I suggest keeping the gift. You are not obligated to activate the 3G. And, though, you may not need the whole 64gigs spec now, you may find it useful, later.

I don't believe anyone regrets having too much storage space available.

And, the 3G can be activated on a month to month basis (as needed), if you decide you need 3G at some point.

If this is your first iPad, you will find it more of the go-to unit over an iPhone due to the large screen & a bit easier to use due to it's size.

Enjoy the iPad, which ever way you decide,

-----

I would.

-----

my decision is to get an iPad2 with 3G since it can be activated month to month. used my friend's yesterday and it ROCKS!

Ordering an iPad 2

Apple iPhoneApple iPhoneWhere's the best place to order the iPad 2 on the internet? I need it before June 10.

Why not get it from Apple directly. The site says it is being delivered within 1-2 weeks. This is US, not sure if you are ordering in another country.

-----

Apple online, their shipping a lot faster now that the initial rush has subsided.

-----

Another place you might try is www.MacConnection.com or perhaps www.Amazon.com. I bought from them before and they very

-----

Apple.com is down to 7-10 days.

-----

Apple online. You'll have it in 2 weeks.

-----

I ordered my iPad 2 directly from Apple on April 6. The promised delivery time was 2-3 weeks. I received notice this morning, April 26, that it is shipping from China. I don't yet have an estimated delivery date. It's unlikely they'll meet the 2-3 week promise unless they're only counting business days or something, but they should be close. I tried to buy my iPad 2 at Apple stores, Best Buy stores and even Walmart, but that was a waste of time.

-----

I ordered mine on April 4th; received notice it shipped 4/22. Went from China to Hong Kong 4/23 and has been in Hong Kong since then! Thought I would get it tomorrow but doubt I will get it before next week. :-(.

-----

The 2-3 weeks (or 1-2 weeks, etc) is their "Ships By" not delivers by - so they had 14-21 days to ship if you ordered on April 6th they had until April 27th to ship and come hell or highwater they would have shipped by midnight on the 27th. When I originally ordered mine (on launch day) it was 1-2 weeks from initial release and they shipped right before midnight on the 14th day and delivery took another week (or more) being stranded in Lantau Island, HK for several days but once it hit the US was at my door in 36 hours...

Tracking File Found in iPhones

Apple iPhone waterproofApple iPhoneYou probably have already seen this but if not hear it is again.

Here is a disturbing article in the NYT about apple recording your location to a hidden file on both the iPhone and iPad. There is a link in the article where you can down load a program to map your movements.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/21/business/21data.html?nl=todaysheadlines&emc=th\a26

Maybe it's time to switch to an Android

A google phone likely to have the same or more data tracking on it. Google is all about gathering user data on their PCs, why not in the software of their phones.

-----

The same company that found the file said that they tested Android phones (and most other smartphone brands) and found nothing similar. This is literally unprecedented. It's the kind of thing that could
result in lawsuits.

-----

I would join if it was a class action lawsuits.

-----

Might be some attempts but it is in the Terms of Service that everyone with an iPhone or 3G iPad agreed to - the file is not on iPod touches or WiFi iPads, it is not transmitted to anyone just stored on the phone and included in backups BUT it is in a paragraph of the TOS so it will be tossed out of any lawsuits as "you should have read it and not agreed to it if you didn't want to store the data".

-----

Probably true; however, given the public relations debacle that this is, I'm guessing any suit would be settled quickly. The FCC has already said they're looking into this and Congress is apparently making inquiries. They will want to bury this ASAP. Remember, a lot of politicians own iPhones (and Crackberries). The quickest way to get on the legislative radar is to do something stupid with your technology that directly impacts the security of the leaders of the country.

-----

BTW, here is one of the letters sent from Congress:
http://www.franken.senate.gov/files/letter/110420_Apple_Letter.pdf

-----

Blackberries have a function built in that can also track your where-abouts. I see it turned on my work blackberry issued to me and I'm sure for everyone else given one at work. I have to suspect work Mgmt has access to that data if they need it, as well as the Gov't.

-----

Bury it in small print in the Terms of Service agreement that apple sends out all the time, If I don't comb through it like a lawyer then it's my fault.

The big question is why is apple doing it. I do not want apple to be able to track me that is just creepy. I thought if there was one company I could trust to do the right thing it was apple. I guess they have joined the ranks of large corporations that think they can do anything they want. That is very disappointing. I have been an Apple supporter from the first time they made a computer. I may have to rethink that support.

-----

Wasn't the purpose of tracking for location-based services like restaurants, ads and coupons?

I am certain that Google does this also. They are the leaders in advertising and for sure they have to be doing this somehow. If not yet I would be surprised. Expect it soon then.

-----

Again, no, Google does not do this. While Google and many other providers offer location based services, in all instances users must ASK to be tracked and can opt out at any time. Apples implementation tracks you by default, doesn't tell you they're tracking you, doesn't let you opt out, and stores information in cleartext that anyone with access to your phone or computer can read.

Read the articles. The "but everyone else is doing it" defense (if it can be called that) only applies if, you know, everyone else is actually doing it.

Given the negative PR tied to this, complete with FCC and congressional investigation, I highly doubt if any legit companies will be trying a stunt like this in the future.

-----

We've all seen this news by now - Apple (and presumably AT&T) are keeping track of my movements and creating a file where anyone can see those movements.
http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/04/20/3g-apple-ios-devices-secretly-storing-u\sers-location/?ref=technology

Just downloaded the iPhone Tracking File app and -- lo & behold -- there's a map showing where I've supposedly been in the past 20 months or so I've owned this 3GS iPhone. Here's the link to the app - http://petewarden.github.com/iPhoneTracker/

1. It's even got some places where I've been in the Arizona desert, the Mojave desert, Death Valley, and elsewhere in the boonies and used the iPhone on the AT&T cell network. But some of the places seem not to be where I've ever been -- Barstow and Ft Irwin, except driving through on I-15 and 1-40.

2. Is this "Wiretapping" within the meaning of California's Penal Code § 629 et seq? That's a criminal act. Maybe there are other criminal statutes involved.

3. Even if the Penal Code is not implicated, clearly this is a serious breach of my personal privacy. It is surely no business of Apple Corp or AT&T where I've been.

4. This is a terrible black eye to Apple. Whatever possessed Apple to put this thing on my iPhone? It's one thing if I knowingly use something like Foursquare or Facebook's Places, it's quite another to surreptitiously keep track of where I've been - spying on my movements.

IPad Insurance - whats the best?

Apple iPhone ipadApple iPhoneJust got my iPad 2. Is there a good insurance for drops, spills, lost, etc?

Any idea the cost?

-----

Square trade warranty for less than $100.

-----

While I don't have an iPad, I can vouch for square trade. They are excellent!!!

-----

Apple Care and Square Trade overlap in some areas, not in others. Apple Care doesn't cover drops and spills, but it does cover technical support issues. Square Trade covers drops and spills but not technical support. Neither covers loss or theft.

-----

I went with square trade. they have free buy back offer right now too, which isn't the greatest but at least its another option.

iPad iPhone - Personel hotspot not there

Apple iPhone ipadApple iPhone

I have downloaded the latest software on both ipad and iphone 4 but the personel hotspot is not there,i have iphone4 , o2 , latest sofware, looks like i will have to buynthe MiFi instead, can anyone help please !!!!

-----

On your iPhone, go to Settings. The third line down should be "Personal Hotspot". If it is not, go down to "General>About". Then go down to "Version". If it doesn't show "4.3.1", you don't have the latest firmware. I believe the personal hotspot was enabled with 4.3.

-----

Interesting. I do have the latest software but no personal hotspot setting.

-----

Under Settings > General > Network - what does it show?

-----

my phone has

enable 3g
mobile data (on or off)
mobile data network
data roaming
vpn
wifi

thats it and the version is 4.3 ( 8F190 )

-----

Restore you iPhone

------

On my iPhone with iOS 4.3.1, the Personal Hotspot is located at:

Settings> General> Network> Setup Personal Hotspot

-----

Thanks! That is where mine is, too.

-----

For me, in the US, I had to contact my carrier (AT&T) to change my data plan to one that included tethering. THEN I could change the settings on the iPhone to suit. I can't answer for how O2 do it (or IF they do it).

Apple TV, what is it ?

Apple iPhone -

Greetings Bill and Group Members

I have an iPhone 4 as well as an iPad (who doesn't) and wanted to know if anyone had used apple TV with any of these components. I'd also like to know some (if any) of the cool things i could do with an apple tv and my other home equipment which consist of 2 Vizio televisions (55" & 45") and my two 32" inch Vizios usual solely as monitors for my ZT desktop. Thanks for any info you can share .....

iPhone TV
Best from Apple iPhone TV
I don’t have an iPad, but I do have an iPhone 4, my MacBook Pro and — since Christmas — an Apple TV. I have been successful in streaming movies, photos and music from the MBP to the Apple TV. I’ve only tried streaming podcasts from my iPhone to the ATV, but that was also successful. I also have Vizio TVs (a 32” and a 19”), and they work just fine with the ATV. :)

-----
I like playing music from computer or iDevice through TV/sound system. Also like to view photos from iPhone on TV

xmas ipad??

Apple iPhone - xmas ipad??

I am trying to decide what I want for xmas - ipad or tab.

one question about the ipad. across the bottom it seems to basically have 4
icons across the bottom like the iphone. To me it looks so unsymmetrical, are
users able to put more icons across the bottom or stuck with the four icons?

iPhone iPad
Special for you Xmas Apple iPhone iPad
You can have up to 6

-----
You can put six icons. I don't think you can go wrong with an iPad IMO.

-----
You can do up to 6 in my experience I bought the archos tab & I had a hard time with the android system I sent it back after a week & ordered an iPad I couldn't have made a better decision apple's products are so user friendly that's probably why they sell so well

-----
Keep in mind, that the couple of other "tablets" require an additional contract for a monthly data plan. The iPad is optional even if you buy the 3G model, meaning you can turn it on for a month then turn if it off and only use WiFi for a year, etc. I haven't used one myself but Android fans do like the Samsung Galaxy Tab but it is a big difference than an iPad and about half the total screen size.

-----
What did you find hard about it? Android OS 2.2 works almost identical to how the iPhone and iPad works.

I went from an iPhone to Android EVO and didnt have any problems.

-----
The Archos tablet is nothing like the Samsung, in fact if I remember correctly, it runs Android 1.6

-----
Setting up my email & deleting items maybe it was the archos itself so I won't go blaming android so quickly

-----
I have the iPad 3G and have used the Samsung Tablet and I would say research both and see which has more of the features you want as they are both very different. The current iPad does not have dual cameras and some other things the Galaxy does have but I bet the next iPad will have them if you can wait. There is also the size difference, I like the iPads larger size but my friend with the Samsung wanted more portability. Again its what you need.

If you want a lot of apps including major names, more magazines and support, don't play online games, do video chat like BlogTV or watch a lot of online videos, be tied to iTunes on a computer to activate, backup and get updates, and limited to however much storage you first bought, the iPad is nice.

If you need flash for websites, want less apps but a greater variety of them including adult apps, don't want to be tied to a computer for updates and can backup/sync many things OTA or with the Cloud, need unlimited storage with removable memory cards, the Samsung is nice.

I have the Android EVO and iPad 3G so I can use both app stores.

-----
I can put more than that. And even more in landscape mode.

I don't think that's a major issue in choosing a device. It's what you find more appealing and familiar to you. I presume iOS since this is an iPhone forum. But if you are more comfortable with Android, then get an Android device.

Actually, six (=

Difference between the iPhone and iPad USB Cable?

Apple iPhone - Is there a difference between the iPhone and iPad USB Cable?

I find that when I try to sync my iPad that sometimes it is a very very slow sync. At first I thought it was my USB connection on my Mac.

I have two cables here one for iPad and one for iPhone and decided to abort a very long sync in iTunes and switch out the two cables. The following sync was faster.

Most of what I read on the internet says the cables are no different as far as hardware. but only in cosmetic appearance.

Just wondering if there is a difference and how do you tell cosmetically which is which?

iPhone iPad
What is Apple iPhone iPad
There is no difference in any of the Apple Cables - the generic 30 pin cables (Griffin, Monoprice, Cablesdirect, etc) have slightly larger connection and will not fit in some of the cases, especially the iPhone 4 bumper but they do not effect syncing at all.

-----
I was told by an Apple tech over the telephone that the two do work differently and that I should use the iPad cable with the iPad. That's what he said, but who knows if it really makes a difference...?

-----
The only thing that is different is the wall charger, the iPhone wall charger is lower wattage and will take much longer to charge than using the larger iPad charger the USB to 30 pin cable is exactly the same for every iPod/iPhone/iPad

-----
is there any risk in using the iPad charger on on iPhone 3G?

-----
I do it all the time without issues.

-----
I use my iPad wall charger to sometimes charge my iPhone 3G. It does not seem to impact the phone negatively. One thing I do note (or did prior to the new 4.2 update and I don't think it is happening now) was that the phone would not show as being charged even if it was.

-----
It would seem the cables should be identical. However, when I used my iPhone cable on my new iPad, the syncing was sometimes erratic. Then when I tried to download my music files from iTunes, it simply wouldn't download -- even after several attempts. I then tried the iPad cable and, voila, it synced perfectly. Weird!!

-----
Weird indeed.
I've been syncing my iPod Touch (2nd gen), iPad, & iPhone4 all using the sync cables that came with my iPODs from 3-4 years ago, with no problems.

-----
I know that I have different results using the cables interchanged. Possibly there were other factors involved that effected my syncs. My husband is an electrical engineer and is usually right, swears there is no difference and that even the chargers can be interchanged.

-----
The various ipod/phone chargers, maybe. But the iPAD (wall-)charger is bigger-- delivers more juice -- & that one does make a difference; you can use the iPAD charger for the iPOD & iPHONE though. The iphone charger (or the syncing cable hooked up to my laptop) will eventually charge the ipad, though very slowly & with the charge-display saying "not charging".

-----
I've had issues with cables that have gotten dirt/dust or moisture in the dock end (corrosion). Those dock connectors are VERY fine and the different devices depend on somewhat different pins so if you get "lucky" you might have a piece of dirt or lint that is messing up just the pin one device needs while the other ignores that signal. That could account for apparent differences. I have one cable that is problematic in a similar way but when you carefully inspect the dock connector end you can see that it has some gunk/corrosion in the end of the connector. They are so fine that I despair of trying to clean it without damaging it but you can use compressed air or maybe some ultra fine sand paper. Short of that, I just replace cables that have become unreliable. The dock connector is one of the more fragile connectors out there.

-----
For your kind information both are different cable , even though they look the same. I work for an Apple Authorized dealer. If you use iPhone cable for iPad , honestly you are killing your iPad....

-----
This should settle the USB cable question. This is from the Apple support page.

http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=search&src=support_site.home.search&local\
e=en_US&q=ipad%20usb%20cable

To charge your iPad , iPhone, or iPod, connect it to the 10W USB Power Adapter using a Dock Connector to USB cable . You can use the Dock Connector to USB cable that came with your device, or a compatible third-party cable.

International iPad plan

Apple iPhone - International iPad plan

Am cruising in the Caribbean next month. My iPad shows an international data plan; I went to AT&T today but they say the iPad won't work abroad. Will it work in the Caribbean if the island is listed on the data plan? The ship Internet is extremely slow & more expensive.

I've had my iPad less than 90 days, so I called Apple support today. The iPad will work in the Caribbean with an international plan. I wish there was an Apple store closer than 170 miles away from me.

Off topic kind of

Apple iPhone iPad - off topic kind of

With the holidays coming and all the new tablets out I was watching a show that said they believe the non Apple products that have flash will not hurt the sale of iPads but the other tablets will sell a lot better due to having flash.

I wonder if this will be true?

iPhone iPad
Steve Jos apple iphone ipad
No, I love how people speculate - I can guarantee the majority of the 'reporters' (unless they are actually technologists, such as Becky Worley, Andy Ihnatko, David Pogue, Walt Mossberg, etc) have no idea what "not having Flash" means and even more to the point, I guarantee that if someone goes to the store and uses an iPad vs another tablet, they will buy the iPad unless the price is considerably lower (which I haven't seen).

-----
Nonsense. This is exactly why I am selling my iPad. Many websites don't work, many other things are limited and its getting old. Sure Apple products are nice but limiting them the way Jobs has, has some wanting more.

-----
I bet most *customers* won't care, or understand, about "Flash" unless they have a friend who says they are stupid for not getting it & anything without it is useless (the way some people talk about those who do not j/b their phones.)

Price Will Rule!
The tablets that don't make it s**t-simple to operate & load & get stuff for & so on will have to offer *something* special. And a big fat *lower price*, well-advertised, will attract attention & sales.

I haven't had any problem with "no Flash" on my iToys. Haven't had any iPhone problems either even though it's not j/b. These devices are doing all that I expected of them & then some. And I'm no fanboi, I'm staying in the Windows environment for computers after all these years. Not that I haven't contemplated changing, but the idea of the work involved is just plain too daunting & sends me off for a nap thust thinking about it!

-----
this reporter had the ipad in his hand went to several websites that wouldnt work due to no flash and said this is proof that people will want flash.

-----
Going a non Apple route to be honest. Too many years of cant do this, cant do that and using and paying for apps to do what could be done with a real browser without Apples restrictions. For my use so so many websites don't display correctly on my iPad due to Jobs or Apples restrictions. Then I have to use my laptop or an Android device so I can finally surf 100% of the web.

The novelty has worn off after owning 3 versions of the iPhone and an iPad and being limited.

-----
This is a matter of individual preferences. I have an iPhone, not an iPad, and will clearly say that my browsing experience is sorely compromised by Apple's decision not to support Flash. Respectfully, Bill, I wouldn't so quickly dismiss it so glibly. Some people, indeed, don't care; perhaps eventually HTML5 will fulfill predictions that it will replace Flash. In the meantime this is simply not true, not yet. As to iPad vs other tablets, we'll just have to wait and see the other tablets.

It's certainly not true of any product on earth, even Apple, that anyone going into a store and trying it out will result in a slam-dunk.

-----
And on the other hand, I have an iPad and an iPhone, and feel my browsing experience is enhanced by the absence of Flash.

The issue is not whether or not HTML5 can or will replace Flash, it is how quickly code-writers will utilize the tools that are IN HTML5.

Ipad Options

Apple iPhone - Ipad Options

I have a few questions regarding the Apple iPad after hearing that a few people in the group (probably more than a few), bought it when it came out. Last year for Christmas I bought my husband a Kindle thinking since he is an avid reader that he would really enjoy it. He is not that crazy about it at all, so it just lays around unused most of the time. He says he would rather have a real book in his hands for some reason. I am going to see if I can possibly sell it on EBay or something. I have too many gadgets of my own right now to start using it myself. My main love of course is my iPhone. Anyway, I am seriously thinking of getting him an iPad for Christmas this year. I think he would get much more use out of it since he fell in love with my 3GS that I handed down to him when I got the iPhone 4. What I am wondering is if I should get the one without the 3G. I really don't think he would be taking it out of the house that much. But, I was also thinking that if he was to travel he might want that ability.

For someone that is not constantly on the computer, would the model with only wi-fi suffice?

And, do you think that tethering is ever going to come to the iPhone so that the 3G could be used on the iPad that way?

I want to make sure that I get the right model and don't end up wishing I had spent the money on the more expensive one.

Honestly at this point, 1. I would wait to see what is announced at the press conference on Wednesday,

2. new iPads will likely be announced if not come out in Jan/Feb but other than that the WiFi model has been fine for me since they came out. I have an iPhone (as it sounds like both of you do) for GPS & 3G data needs on the go and if I really need it my Verizon Droid can be a WiFi hot spot but other than testing it twice (when I got it and after an upgrade) I have never used it. My iPad goes with me every day but I rarely use it because I am generally in front of a computer unless I am in the car and then if necessary use the phone, it is mainly used at home for videos, reading, etc.

-----
Would add to the "wait for the new model", consider buying from Verizon and get the MiFi package. A brief look indicated the MiFi would add $30 to the price of an iPad and then you have the option of a non contract data plan for $50 a month/5GB. The Mifi can be used with up to 5 computers like a Touch, netbook. Currently the Verizon MiFi is free if you buy online, but the contract is 2 years at $59 a month.

But if your husband doesn't like reading on the Kindle, doubt he will like the iPad for reading either. I keep books on the Touch or iPad for waiting inline, appointments, but if I want to "read" a book, I want paper.

-----
I also thought I do not need the 3G on the iPad.
Trust me, I sooooo regret I only got the WiFi-only model.

Unless you live in a city where free wifi is everywhere.

-----
So glad I have the wifi+3G model, I'm in new York city and wireless access is by no means universal.

Did you hear that Verizon's going to be selling the iPad in 2 weeks.

Sharing apps with iPad

Apple iPhone - Sharing apps with iPad

I'm planning on buying an iPad early next year. Will I be able to share my iPhone apps with my iPad or will I have to buy them again? Not a big deal for most, but my English-Italian dictionary cost $25. Wouldn't want to have to cough that up again.

iPhone iPad

Yes, long as they are both sync'd under the same iTunes account.

-----
Yes, you can use most of your iPhone Apps on the iPad, the ones that require phone functions obviously will not work and if you get a WiFi iPad, the ones that require GPS, etc will not work (as the current WiFi model does not have GPS). Most iPad Apps are universal meaning that there is only one app that works on both the iPhone and iPad in full screen - they show up in the App Store with a + sign. There are some apps that are only for the iPhone and show up in the middle of the iPad and you can hit the 2x button which stretches it out to make it full screen and then there are other apps that have separate iPhone and iPad versions that you would have to buy again IF you want the iPad specific version but the iPhone version will still work.

-----
Make certain you pay close attention to when the new version of the iPad will come out. Would guess April.

Don't want to buy and have a new one in a couple months.

-----
Yes and you can share apps with others on your authorized computer network through iTunes home sharing as well. I share apps I purchased with my husband too

New iPad, When?

Apple iPhone - New iPad, When?

When is the new iPad is coming out?

According to Taiwanese industry publicationDigiTimes, the suppliers are completing validationfor the second-generation iPad, which will maintain the same 9.7-inch screen when it debuts in the first quarter of 2011.

"Component suppliers of iPad are expected to start shipments for the second-generation iPad at the beginning of 2011," the report said.

Specifically cited suppliers were TPK Touch Solutions, WinTek, Cando, Cimei Innolux. Together, they are said to be validating "ultra-thin glass-based touch panels with Apple."

As reported last week by AppleInsider, Apple plans to move aggressively on adding FaceTime functionality to its entire line of iOS devices, leaving the iPad as the last device to receive the upgrade. A person with proven knowledge of the company's future plans indicated that an iPad equipped with a forward facing camera is already in the advanced testing stages at Apple.

Though Apple typically follows an annual upgrade pattern for its devices, it was said that Apple could refresh the iPad line ahead of this year's holiday season. That person indicated that the FaceTime-equipped iPad was tracking for an introduction no later than the first quarter of 2011.

FaceTime is Apple's open standard for video chat. Currently available on the iPhone 4 and fourth-generation iPod touch, it requires Wi-Fi to operate.

Picasa or some other way

Apple iPhone - Picasa or some other way

Last time I checked, to download photos on blogger by using the iPhone I had to use Picasa. I learned from someone else that once the photos are up, Picasa wants full rights to them to distribute anywhere or how they see fit as long as they wish to do so.

Since I learned that, I decided maybe I don't want to use the iPhone for posting pics to my blog. So far, Picasa is the only way I'm able to transfer over pics to my blog from the iPhone directly without emailing or syncing the pics to my PC first.

Does anyone else know of a way? I have no trouble with Facebook pics going over, but the blogger ones become little boxes without an app.

Pixelpipe maybe? It supports a boatload of upload destinations. I use it for Facebook, twitter, and I have a few FTP sites that auto generate galleries with PHP code I wrote. Maybe it supports your blog software.

-----
There is an app for iPad ($2.99) in app store that allows posting to several blog platforms and allows posting video, photos through several servers: Flickr, Picasa or their BlogPress platform.

I haven't tried it, but it looks interesting. Wonder if anyone is using this one? Says it is also compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch

Not sure if this would meet your requirements, but I thought that any photo you posted via computer to Blogger, went to Picasa or maybe that is my default photo server.

It seems they used to have a direct email address you could sent photos, I haven't tried that either, but might be worth looking on the Blogger Help site or googling it.

64G 3G iPad

Apple iPhone - 64G 3G iPad

I bought a 64G 3G iPad from Best Buy tonight. I'm synching with iTunes & it looks like my iPhone apps migrated to the iPad. I thought I had to buy them again. Is this right? My iPad is still synching, so I have not tried to use any yet.

Can I use my iPhone car charger for the iPad? I have to go to the AT&T store tomorrow to sign up for 3G service for a month, so if I also need a charger, I'll get one then.

iPhone iPad

iPhone apps run fine on iPad just sync. The iPad uses a lot of current so most iPhone charges only trickle charge it. It the truck the iPad lasts me a week so shouldn't need recharging that often. You should do at least do a day of very heavy usage.

-----
Absolutely. You are able to load the apps you bought on any device you sync with that account.

-----
I bought the same version as you got and love it. My apps all migrated but things like passwords and bookmarks did not. Also I have been told that the car charger does not work and many of the chargers list for sale also do not work. There were a couple of chargers being offered on Amazon.com for around $300 that definitely do not work. Also plugging the iPad into the computer as we do will also not charge it.

-----
I don't know about car chargers -- I haven't tried mine with the iPad & don't do much charging in the car anyway other than the built-in iPod hookup that plays & charges the Nano I keep in there -- but the iPad *will* charge on my laptop (as long as the laptop is running & not in sleep or hibernate mode, & I suppose it's best if the laptop is plugged in itself & not on battery power!) -- it will *say* it's not charging but actually it is charging but very slowly. I've seen this when I put it on sync & go away for some time.

-----
I just asked the techs at apple about that yesterday I got an iPad last wkend & when the batt finally died I took the lazy route & plugged in my iPhone charger & the iPad said that it's not charging the tech said that the iPad has a 10w charger while the iPhone & iPod has 5w chargers so if you use the iPhone charger on the iPad it'll reject it if you charge the iPhone with the iPad charger it may overheat so be careful

-----
Yup. I'm on the road now & plugged in the iPad with the charger. It won't charge. No problem; I'll use the iPhone and use my unltd data plan instead of the 2g I bought yesterday.

-----
Which car charger did you get?? Where did you get it?? I am going to Yellowstone NP and I would like to be able to use the iPad in the car and I want to get the right car charger the first time. I have the iPad and iPhone chargers in pretty close proximity to each other here in the house and both are labeled to reduce the chances for error.

-----
I got my iPhone charger from Amazon & it was sold as a phone charger not iPad. Has worked well for the iPhone.

I sure do hope I brought the right wall unit to recharge the iPad. If not, Walmart is my best hope.

Bill, I gave up using the iPad in the front seat--too much glare/reflection. My daughter is using it in the backseat without glare. (Driving east in the morning so there was a lot of sun.)

-----
I ended up ordering a Griffin Technology unit from Amazon. Somebody on the list recommended that brand, don't remember who. I am not sure how much I am going to use the iPad in the car but one potential significant use is the iPod function. Bigger unit=bigger sound than iPhone?? I am driving 20 hours each way to Yellowstone NP this Fall. Louder volume in the iPod function would be nice.

-----
You will want a 2 amp charger. Amazon has the cheapest ones. I got one made by Griffin. You can charge your phone with it and it charges faster.
