iPhone, Battery drain

I am suddenly experiencing battery drain on my iPhone 4 v4.3.3 and cannot figure out why this is happening. I can go from 100% battery charge to 10% within a matter of 5 hours with no phone usage at all.

I have tried various suggestions that I found on a Google search such as Reset Network Settings, turn off App Store, closed out apps running in background. I have a couple of Location services turned on but they have been running all along with no problem.

Because of the timing what I suspect is that there is an iPhone app that was updated a couple of nights ago that may be causing the issue. My problem is that I don't really have a clue which app it may be because there were a dozen or so apps that were updated that night and I did not pay any attention to what they were.

I thought of doing a restore from a previous backup and then trying to install the app updates individually to see if I could root out a problem but all I am seeing when I selet Restore from Backup on iTunes is a backup that I did last night , 6/27 which is post app updates.

I know I did a previous backup on 6/20 but I cannot find a backup folder with that date in Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/.

So, I am looking for suggestions on

what may be draining the battery

how to find what apps were updated on 6/26

how to find the backup from 6/26

Just do a restore without any backups, this way you will know if this problem is the iphone itself.

For my own experience, backups that have corrupted apps and data will remain corrupted when you use them again.

Check the battery drain for a couple of days and if OK THEN start installing your apps one at the time.

You can find out what apps were updated by going to the apps section in your iTunes library, adding a "date modified" column to the display (& putting that column next to the app names so you can see it!) and sorting on date-modified -- do it in reverse & the latest mods will show at the top. I have both a date-added & date-mod column in my app library display.

This won't tell you which app may be causing the problem but might give some clues.

I remember when the latest iPhone iOS (I think it was 4.3 ???) came out, people complained that it drained their battery. For that reason, I haven't upgraded the iOS on my 3GS and I'm currently using 4.2.1.

(1) Does the current iOS, (4.3.3) drain your iPhone's battery?

(2) Should I stay with my current 4.2.1 and wait until iOS 5 to update my phone?

The latest iOS 4 does not have a battery drain issue that I am aware of - there was an issue with Ping that was fixed with an update after it was released. Updating to the latest version is not going to prevent you from updating to iOS 5 and that was just released to beta so it is a good 3 or 4 months away so unless you have some reason to stay where you are at, I would upgrade.

I have a 3GS running 4.3.3 and I can get through a day on one charge. Especially if I have 3G and any GPS app turned off. It is no more battery hungery than 4.2.

iPhone, Mophie Juice Pack Plus

I'm planning to buy a Mophie Juice Pack Plus and I wondering if anyone on the list have one?

I am curious to know how much it can charge a fully depleted iPhone 4 battery?
I cannot find this info on the web. They all say about talk time or Internet time, but it is very unclear to me.

I wanted to know how far it goes when you have your iPhone battery is dead and the case if fully charged, how high will it bring the iPhone battery back before it dies.

I have a cheap Mophie clone and it does charge my iPhone 4 up to 95%, and then stops. So we are talking about almost 2X the iPhone battery capacity and I don´t think there is a 2000mAh battery in there like the Mophie Plus says it has.

I hope Mophie Plus can do better than that.

The plus will fully charge iPhone 4 at least 1.33 times. It is 2000 mah and iPhone is 1500 so full charge with 500 left.

I have the mophie juice pack plus. Its great however, in my experience it does not completely charge an iPhone 4. Close. But not quite. Probably goes to about 80% when the device is completely empty.

Battery, Usage under General Settings

I have an iPhone on Verizon, not sure if that should matter or not but I've noticed sometimes the usage shows up on my iPhone display and other times it appears blank. Is there something that controls whether or not it appears? I know it says it shows the usage after the iPhone has been fully charged, but sometimes it seems like it's there initially after I charge it and then later on it disappears.

This is from the iPhone user manual. Maybe it will help.

"Usage—Amount of time iPhone has been awake and in use since the last full charge. iPhone is awake whenever you’re using it—including making or receiving phone calls, using email, sending or receiving text messages, listening to music, browsing the web, or using any other iPhone features.iPhone is also awake while performing background tasks, such as fetching email messages."

I just tuned my iPhone off, which I never do, and back on with battery of 78%. The usage data stayed. My iPhone is AT&T so it my not be the same results since the iOS is not totally the same.

If the iPhone is genuinely powered off, then there will be almost no power drain except to keep the clock running. You could leave it that way for weeks and then boot it back up ready to use.

However, when the iPhone is just sleeping (aka, on stand-by), even if you've placed the phone in airplane mode and turned off all tasks running in the background, there is some power drain devoted to maintaining the phone's ability to immediately respond when you press one of the buttons. The screen may be blank, but clock and calendar continue to function, the memory is active, the accelerometer is still working, and the computer is awaiting input from the de-powered sensors when they turn back on.

All these things require some electricity, and although the iPhone is extremely efficient, it probably can sit sleeping no longer than 2-3 weeks without draining the battery. If you've turned OFF airplane mode, then it lasts even less time. And battery drain then depends on how strong the cell signals are and whether you have bluetooth, wi-fi, cellular data, and 3G enabled.

I have an AT&T iPhone, but perhaps the following is true for the Verizon variety, too: In the Settings app, under "General" there is a switch to turn on Battery percentage. With that switch activated, your battery icon will always indicate the percentage of power remaining in the battery.

I updated my iPhone 4 to iOS 4.3 this morning before leaving for work. Update went very smoothly with no issues.

Granted it's only been about nine hours of usage so far but my battery seems to be draining much faster than normal. I haven't turned on any battery draining apps or changed any settings that I know of. Is anyone else on iOS 4.3 seeing this or am I just imagining this?

I have been running it since beta 1 and haven't noticed anything. You may want to backup do it as a restore instead of an upgrade then restore your backup and resync.

Yeah - when you upgrade it installs on top of whats there whereas a restore reformats the system and the backup tells it what to put back on and where.

I have with me an iPhone 4 locked on AT&T. Since I´m overseas and its baseband does not have an unlock yet, it is just sitting here waiting.

It still have the AT&T SIM inside, the wifi is on (but should go off once it goes on standby), it is jailbroken, with very little software installed beyond those that come with it.

Well I decided to test its battery longevity on a single charge, standby only (no messing with it).

I charged it up to 100% full on last friday, march 4th at 11:00PM, unplugged it and let it sit on my desk with an occasional peek to check the battery level once or twice a day.

Well for my surprise, today 9:30PM, wednesday, march 9th (almost 5 full days) the battery still holds 17% capacity left! (I will let you know when it drains totally)

The curious thing is, for my knowledge, the iPhone should be seeking for AT&T signals, which of course, there is none where I´m, and for sure wasting even more battery.

So the iPhone is not that bad regarding battery life, if you just leave it alone. Maybe with a few calls a day may drain the battery little faster, but nothing that could make it worst than others cell phones.

Lengthen Battery life

My husband was browsing on his iPhone and up popped a suggestion that to lengthen the life of the battery, one should keep the battery fully charged but occasionally let it run down to almost nothing. Is that correct? I keep my 4 charged fully most of the time and have never let it go down below 75%.

The iPhone has a battery that is unlike older "NICAD" batteries that would benefit from letting it run down. Lithium batteries do not have a memory like Nicads do so its really not necessary. I recharge when it gets down to about 20%. Either way will work.

It seems that old myths die hard - I should submit this one to the Mythbusters.

The truth is - with Lithium Ion batteries your fully charged cell voltage is around 4V. If the battery ever discharges below 2.5V, it is unrecoverable. The good news is - that almost never happens. Lithium Ion batteries are so dangerous - there are sophisticated charging circuits controlling them. Part of the function of the charge circuit is to optimize life - if the battery is fully charged, the charging circuit shuts down before any potential damage could happen from overcharging. Similarly, if the cell has dropped below 2.5V, it will not attempt to charge it.

Bottom line - fully discharging a Lithium Ion battery is flirting with the lower cell voltage limit, and repeatedly doing this could fool the charging circuitry into thinking the battery is unrecoverable.

As with any rechargeable battery, you shouldn't attempt charging unless the phone is at room temperature. Charging when the battery is hot or cold can damage it - and the charging circuit may contain a temperature sensor to keep the battery from charging until it is in a safe temperature range.

Randomly Dying 3GS Battery

Apple iPhone - Continuing Saga of the Randomly Dying 3GS Battery

I'm having with my 3GS. Back a few months ago, the phone would abruptly shut down - at anywhere from 35% to 80%. I tried running it down to recalibrate (but if it shuts down at 47%, is it really "run down"), letting it sit idle for a day (I got the shakes - it felt bad), and other tricks I read online.

I went to the Apple store two Saturdays ago, and I was told it was probably a software problem - and I should do a system restore.

Yesterday I did that - Got all my apps, music, contacts, photos synched and backed up, and did the restore. Felt good... got the looks of the apps and folders adjusted, and things seemed ok.

... Until the thing died at 68%.

I'm trying it again today - no charging while at work. So far I'm down to 84%, and would really like to see the thing go down to 20% or so.

Then I'll try actually using it to get the charge down (rather than letting it sit idle) and see what happens from there.

I read on a few boards that this is not an uncommon problem. If anyone has any other suggestions, I'm all ears.

It is not all that common on the 3 lists that I am on.

How old is your 3GS? They were released in June 2009. Since your 3GS could be getting near the end of the warranty and the Apple Care, I would do something about it now. If it is outside of warranty, they you will have to replace the battery.

I don't think that they recommend recalibration of the iPhone battery.

If you are having a problem after a reset, then it might be a hardware issue, or age. They do happen. But try the recalibration first. Or take it back in to the Apple Store, just back everything up before you go.

This is the procedure to recalibrate a Mac laptop battery. If you don't mind using some of your cellular data usage, then turn off WiFi and watch a NetFlix streaming movie, or listen to Pandora, until the iPhone shuts down. If you don't want to use your data usage, then do the same using WiFi. I believe the instructions say to leave the device for several hours, like 5 or more, in this state. Then charge the device fully. Disconnect and use the device. Watch when it shuts off again. If it does not give you better performance at this point, then I would take it into the Apple Store and tell them all that you have done, and if you can reference back to the earlier visit, do that.

Again, I don't think that they recommend recalibration for the iPhone battery, so I take no responsibility if you do.

The screwdriver that iFixit sells works, but it isn't an exact fit. I hope that a correct fitting one will be out soon. You can use the iFixit kit but be aware that you must be very careful to avoid stripping the screw head.

You have to wonder what business model they used to justify this. They sell millions of iPhones, so multiply that by - what - 2 or 4 screws per iPhone. Even if the screws are a penny each for Apple, that is still a lot of money, especially when you figure in tooling costs, distribution costs, the cost of labor each time a phone is brought into Apple, etc. Probably in the millions of dollars.

Now - what percentage of people will actually change their batteries themselves? 1% 0.1%? I just don't see how they are losing enough money on do it yourselfers that it justifies all the expense.

The only conclusion I can come to is that this is lawyer mandated. Since the batteries can get as hot as hot lava if they are shorted, a clumsy or inexperienced person doing it themself can be in real danger. Apple doesn't want a lawsuit. The problem? This won't stop a determined user from doing it anyway. That small percentage is a very determined, stubborn percentage and will stop at nothing to do the job themselves. So - the new screws accomplish NOTHING.

Have plain philips screws there and there is the likelihood of an "average joe" trying to open it and causing a problem.

Put pentalobe screws in and that likelihood is now almost zero.

Less warranty claims. Less complaints. Less problems.

And while you can quote 1% as a number of people who might want to change their batteries, don't forget that 1% is still 160,000 iOS devices (on the last number I saw) so that's 160000 more possible warranty claims.

I wouldn't trust them - the only 'cheap' externals I am aware of are the ones that use Double AA batteries and are just a 'conversion' that take battery power from AA and send it over a 30 pin connector to the iPhone for a quick top off. You would be much better off investing in either a Mophie Battery Case or if you prefer one of the Power Blocks that allow you to charge via USB cable -

I've bought several from eBay or couple inexpensive online dealers for 8-10 each. Don't know what you are looking at but buy from someone with lots of good sales for the item you are looking at.

Ones I've gotten have filled a nearly empty phone once. So figure less than a full charge to be honest. If really working on a project, mail, just leave plugged in and work. Like of bulky and need to be careful, but have been pleased. If going to town put a couple of them in a carrier just in case needed. Wifi in town if often weak so sucks power. Just our experience.

Have used on an iPod, but iPad needs much more battery.

I´ve been searching for a solar charger for my iphone on the web. I´m tired to plug it every nigth for charging and I was thinking to leave the iphone under a small lamp during sleep time and it would be charged in the morning with no wires.

Have anyone tested one of those silicon case solar charger for the iphone?

There are some others on the market that are just slide-in type and I don´t

You have an iPhone, and you have a choice of recharge power sources - either mains power or solar power.

You have to plug the iPhone into the mains, or plug it into the solar unit.

You would prefer to spend the money to buy a solar unit to use in the same environment in which you already have mains power anyway, and plug into that in order to save you from having to plug into the mains.

Have I got that right?

Yes, that is it. I just want to get home and leave my iPhone "sun bathing" under a lamp and have it recharge overnight (the lamp stays on anyways).

I don´t know if it possible, or I really need sunlight to use one of those chargers.

I've had my iPhone since August 2008. In the last few weeks, it's been powering off anywhere from 20-45%. I'll be working on it, and it will just shut down. I will turn it back on, and it will go for about 20 seconds (long enough to see the battery level is still 1/5 or more) then shut down again.

This afternoon it shut down at 44%. I plugged it in, and it wouldn't turn on for at least ten minutes - when I pressed the Power button I got the horizontal battery with a sliver of red, and the lightning bolt icon under it. All the power connections were good.

Any thoughts? Is this the beginning of the end?

Although lithium ion batteries cannot be "reformed" as NiCad's could be by discharging them fully and re-charging them, the iPhone's *calibration* (accuracy of reading the level of charge) can be improved by this maneuver.

Go find the article on calibrating the battery. Try it a couple of times, otherwise it may be time to replace the battery. You are "supposed" to calibrate it monthly, but I don't know a soul that does.

If you have used the phone for 2 years, it may be time, but if it is saying 40% then I think it just needs a calibration.

Agreed. I'm confused on the process of it. I've looked online, and I've seen everything to turning off Push and 3G to letting the battery run down completely (which obviously won't work since mine is dying at random levels).

You're not calibrating the battery, but rather the gauge. An Li Ion battery loses capacity as it ages. The analogy is like your car's gas tanks shrinking with age. Since the phone's meter measures charge (coulombs) going in and out of your batter, if the capacity goes down the meter is incorrect. By draining the battery and fully recharging, you calibrate the 0% and 100% capacity points.

Actually, you are letting it run down to zero. The phone shuts off at a certain voltage. The meter needs to show 0% at that point, which is what you're calibrating.

So... if I'm understanding you correctly... when my phone shuts off at whatever level (40%, 22% or 3%), I should then leave it off the charger for 8 hours or so, then recharge it completely?

I'll third, you can buy a $1 extension cord at any Wal-mart, Pharmacy, Dollar Store, etc. If you want a "USB" Extension Cable they are $8-$15.

Agree, that having an expensive extension cord is good as well. I carry a multi plug extension cord when I travel as most of the plugs in the hotel are usually in an inconvenient place and it allows me to charge my iPhone and iPad conveniently while on the road or traveling. Also has come in handy to use with a laptop, ipad or iphone in most airports as well.

Besides being the cheaper solution, I keep a 6 foot multi-plug extension cord in my electronics kit for travel.

That and a small 3-prong to 2-prong adapter. I used to travel for work about a third of the time. I used to haul so much misc electronic junk that I took a small man's toilet kit bag and made it my electronics travel kit. This kit has gotten smaller over the last few years, but the extension cord and adapter are still the most used items, other than the USB charger.

iphone 4 Black-out

My iPhone4 was fully charged. it was completely black-out and would not turn on (bricked?)I used it maybe 2 to 3 hours after it was fully charged. Finally, I plugged it to the wall charger and about 3 minutes later I hold both (power and home key for about 10 seconds. Shortly after that I saw the apple logo and started the charge. Battery was 86% full.

Why is this happened? Does anybody experience this? Should I be concern?

iPhone 4 was not detected and i was told I had to make appointment to their full tech review

Appointment was 6 hours later

I went outside. Pressed power And home for about 5 seconds ( maybe a little more). And shazaam.

The iPhone is a computer it is possible you have an app or combination of apps that conflicted with the OS or the OS itself had "Blue Screened" and froze - just like any computer can freeze for no apparent reason...

I just had my phone switched out at the apple store due to battery problems.

I was wondering about my warranty. Does it start over based on the issue of a new phone? Anyone know?

The warranty in the first phone ends Nov 30 and I want to purchase an additional year but don't know now if I have to do it right away.

In my experience though, I had a 3G that had a month left on warranty. I got a replacement and was told that the previous warranty didn't extend onto the new one nor do I get another year on the new one. I checked online the other day and the warranty has expired. I've only had the new 3G for about 2 months.

If they switched out your phone they will extend the warranty to 90 days from that point or for the period of the original warranty whichever is later. However if you want to buy AppleCare to extend the warranty, I believe they count that from the day the phone was originally purchased.

My 3GS was replaced last month due to Home Button problem.

Warranty still ends tomorrow though.

But at least I got a new one.

I have never been happy with my battery performance and got even more unhappy after I got my husband the same phone. We both use our phones about the same and mine was always running out and his was not

So I took it in, after making an appointment at the apple store. A nice young man took my phone and ran a diagnostic (so he said). He said the battery checked out fine and there was no water damage. He suggested it was a software issue. I complained a little more about it being troublesome from day one. He gave me a new phone.

I had my phone for 11 months. I didn't know how bad the battery was until I had hubbys phone to compare it to.

Anyway I am a happy customer. I did a restore and got everything back except my apps, which is fine with me. I am re-downloading only those apps I really use.

Apple gets an a for customer service.

I had the exact same problem for the past few weeks. The battery would drop fast even when it was just sitting and not being used. I did a restore and now it works perfect. Apple told you right. It is a software issue.

For those that need more battery life - Brookstone makes a little battery pack that really extends operating time. Another thing to carry, another charger - but it is great for those situations when you have to have the phone work, and the battery is dead.

Sadly - it only works with the 3Gs, it doesn't work with my daughter's iPhone 4 at all.

what is a restore? Do you lose everything?

If it was a software issue I should not see it on my new phone correct? I had no issues with my phone except hubby and could set them side by side and do the exact same thing and his would only drop a little and mine would drop a lot.

I am confused by the restore comment.

Restore is a function of iTunes. I did a backup of my iPhone and then clicked on restore. After the restoring the iPhone to new condition, iTunes asks if I would like to restore data from my last back up After that a sync will return everything back like it was. The main difference is that any glitch in the iOS has been removed. Some on the list will tell you to do a restore and then reinstall all the apps. This is a lot of work if restoring my data from the last backup will do.

I have had to do a restore as new several times. Once the GPS quit finding my location and a restore fixed it. I'm not sure I made that all clear.

..correct, restore the phone then restore your backup. If you still have the problem, restore the phone again then set up as a new phone and this is where you will have to do the work of setting everything back up. Generally a Restore then restoring the backup will work, this is how I install each new beta, etc and rarely have an issue. Only once in the past 7 upgrades have I had to set up as completely new.

Not Charge via Socket..

Last night I plugged in my iPhone (to charge it) before I went to bed. The battery was at around 40%. I use an alarm on my phone so it charges AND acts as an alarm for the next morning. This particular alarm app makes the iPhone look like a digital clock as it is propped up on your nightstand.

When I woke around 4am, I noticed the alarm was still on (as evidenced by the digital clock display on the face of the phone), but it said something about a very low battery….I think it said 5%.

I turned off the alarm and kept the phone plugged in to charge it and it wouldn't hold a charge. When I plugged in the phone, it showed the Apple battery display, with a small red slit on the "low" end of the battery display, and a lighting bolt showing it's plugged in. But even w/it plugged in, it wasn't charging it and I couldn't use the phone….it merely showed the battery display. I changed cords, I changed electrical sockets, and nothing worked.

Finally, I opened my laptop and opened iTunes. I plugged in my phone (with the cord that wouldn't charge it in the socket…a convertible charger cord) and it WORKED! Since I already had iTunes opened when I plugged in my phone, I don't know if it was the laptop or the iTunes that made it start charging. Hours later, my phone was fully charged and working perfectly.

(1) Has anyone ever had this happen?
(2) Do you know why this would happen?
(3) I made an appointment at the Apple Genius Bar (before I was able to get it working) since I thought my phone's battery was completely dead. Since it's now working, should I cancel or is there some reason they should look at my phone?

Yes, I did a hard reboot more than once.

I think that most likely either
1. The plug was not securely in the wall socket or
2. The cord was not securely in the plug or
3. The socket itself is either defective or lost power.

I assume that mean charger when they say socket. Meaning the charger maybe defective.

This *is* a possibility, but I mean the socket the charger was plugged into when I said "socket"....

On re-thinking it, if the same charger failed in different sockets, the socket is unlikely to be the problem (unless the fuse/breaker common to the sockets tried had failed).

The USB plug could be *in* the charger enough to not fall out, but perhaps not *all the way* in, making good electrical connection.

Some new laptops stop providing power on their USB ports when you close them. This is to save their battery. The sleep or hibernation mode also stops all running programs too.

Some of the chargers we've had have been faulty. That has happened to me before.

This sometimes happens to me.

I sometimes plug my iPhone into the wall plug to recharge it. It is the iPad charger. The phone does not show that it is charged (or charging) when I take it off the charger. If I reboot my phone it then shows that is fully charged. I am not sure why this happens but it does. I know the iPad charger is more powerful but still I am not sure why this happens

Set screen time out shorter or hit the lock button when finished. I've found I like the 4 min best and hit the lock top button when done.

On long phone calls not multitasking turn 3g off. I use this mainly when battery is low and I don't want it to die.

If you get the battery app, it will show you the huge difference in talk time.

I often plug my iPhone 4 into a wall socket overnight and am surprised to get up in the morning and find it only 92% charged, from about 60-80% charge before I plugged it in. Does it fully charge then start to lose charge? Do you turn it completely off when charging?

I had the same problem about a month ago! 92% charge from an overnight charging on my iPhone 4. I thought the plug just came loose from the outlet. I recharged and it went to 100% and has done so ever since. I find that odd.

One thing to try is to let it drain down to the red and then recharge it. Try that a couple of times. That might bring it around. Don't leave it on the charger longer than necessary...over night charges don't hurt it much but you shouldn't do that all the time because eventually the battery's life will be shorter.
