Organize iTunes albums

Apple iPhone iTunes - Organize iTunes albums

How do you organize your albums in iTunes so that albums that are compilations of different artists do not show up as seperate albums? Trying to put some Christmas music on my nephews soon to be 3G and when you hold the phone in landscape mode to see all the album covers this keeps happening and is a pain!

iPhone iTunes
Rihanna a girl like me apple iphone album
Select them all - right click - get Info - check "Part of a compilation"

I've been wondering for quite a while what a "compilation" really is in iTunes. Can anyone tell me?

-----
"A *compilation album* is an album (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Album) (
music (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music) or
spoken-word(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spoken-word))
featuring tracks from either a single or multiple recording
artists(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recording_artists),
often culled from a variety of sources (such as studio
albums(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Studio_albums),
live albums (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_album),
singles(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singles_%28music%29),
demos (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demo_%28music%29) and
outtakes(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outtake).)

The tracks are usually collected according to a common characteristic, such as popularity, genre, source or subject matter. "

Basically it is a "best of" album, like "Best of the 80s" where you have say 2-15 tracks from different artists that have already appeared on other albums but are compiled on a new album - typically if you just add them to iTunes and let it sort / albumize them they will be sorted by the artist then album & not be on a single compiled album so you have to manually override iTunes to tell it that those tracks are a compilation album & should be sorted as such.

If these are commercial compilations, then it is highly likely that they have been correctly identified in Gracenote as compilations.

Even the monthly compilation CDs that come with 'Uncut' magazine are correctly flagged in this way.

I would simply describe them as being by a number of artists, so they do not fit in the Music > Artist > Album structure and instead should go in Music > Compilations > Album.

A "best of" by a single artist/band might be a compilation in the usual sense but not in terms of the iTunes structure.

A compilation in iTunes is meant as an album with tracks from multiple singers.

In the Info for the tracks, enable the option "Part of a compilation". This setting is in a different place depending on whether you're editing a single track or multiple tracks at once.
