iPhone, Zoom Travel Router

Has Anyone tried this router.

Staples guy tells me it will allow iPhone to project signal through this device thereby creating wifi for iPad or laptop use.

I questioned him as to the need to change plans from unlimited to 'metered'. He said it will work with unlimited $90 on the shelf.

It was a zoom travel router..

Apple iPhone, Zoom Travel RouterApple iPhone

Are you referring to the Zoom 4506? For what you describe, I'm skeptical. How are you going to make your iPhone the source of the connection? If you have an app on the iPhone to create a WiFi source, you don't need this thing, and you cannot plug the iPhone into it to create one either, as that does not work with an iPhone.

For that matter, any modern phone capable of being used as a wireless modem has the capability to generate a WiFi hotspot without the need of additional hardware.

This thing is supposed to be used with a mobile broadband cellular modem device, which is a USB dongle and runs on its own cellular access number. And IMO, if you're going to go that route, you may as well just get the MiFi for your carrier.

-----

I was looking at the mifi but there is an additional monthly cost.

Staples guy said this would take iPhone signal (after plugged into the zoom) and make it a hotspot

I will be by staples today. I may ask for a demo.

-----

i think that's a great idea. please report the outcome. in the meantime if you're looking for a cheap 3G alternate with month-to-month pricing check out Millenicom http://www.millenicom.com/. their 'Advanced Plan' piggybacks onto the VZW data network. $60 for 20gb of data. we activate it from time to time while on our RV trips. works well. and i have no connection to the company other than as a customer. their USB modem should easily plug into the Zoom modem creating a multi-user hot spot.

-----

Went to staples andtried it. Brought my iPad in with wifi only activated.

Plugged travel zoom router into AC.

Plugged iPhone into USB.

iPad saw the zoom, was able to connect to it but no 3G was sent from the iPhone.

Some staples guys tried their Verizon iphones. The only one that worked was the one that had the tethering plan.

-----

The only 'legit' / reliable way to tether is to pay for the tethering plan with the limited data plan - will work via WiFi, USB, or Bluetooth.

-----

Agree
I tried

-----

if you're referring to the "Zoom 4506 3G Wireless-N Travel Router" you should know that it is designed to take a USB 3g modem. i don't see how you would connect an iphone to it. why would you need the iphone to "project" a signal through the Zoom in order to create a hotspot when the iphone itself can be made to be a wireless hotspot? that's a neat little gizmo, though. and amazon has them for $65.

-----

I wanted to use my iPad. Right now the iPad blows through the $25 plan (plus) quickly.

-----

3G iPad? All you'd be doing is shifting that usage from one cellular data plan to another. And you don't need the router to do that, just activate the hotspot app on the iPhone. Oh, and pay your provider the $25 or so a month more it'll cost.

iPhone, WiFi home

Can't get on home WiFi.. I pushed too many buttons, two many Times yesterday and now I can not Sign onto my home Wi Fi, because It Asked for a password, that I do Not have! Any suggestions, I am using A D-Link system.

Apple iPhone Wi FiApple iPhone Wi Fi

Do you have verizon? Comcast?

You may have to reset your router... (or find your password). Sometimes the passwords are generic (like AAAA0000) if you never set up yourself and the system does it automatically.

Good luck... it can be a frustrating process.

-----

Connect to your D-link from your computer using the admin password and look for the connection password.

-----

If you bought the router yourself from a regular store like Best Buy the default password will be in the manual. If you don't have the manual you can get a copy of it on the router manufacturers website.

wi fi iPhone usage

Apple iPhone - wi fi iPhone usage

Perhaps a redundant question, but can an iPhone access the internet using WI-FI without having the phone operational?

iPhone WiFi
Apple iPhone WiFi
Yes. Turn on Airplane Mode. This will turn all the radios off. Then turn Wi-Fi back on.

-----
If you still need the GPS, you could also simply take the SIM card out (at least with the AT&T phones).

-----
thanks for the post I will likely pick up an iPhone just to use for Internet for now.

-----
just a question my gym and my house does not have wifi is there any Other way I can use my phone without using my data package I have the 25.00 data I'm afraid I'm going to have extra charges

-----
If you just want to use the phone (no data unless WiFi) you can turn Cellular Data off in Settings > General > Network

-----
That's the same thing I do. Then just switch Cellular Data ON when you need it.

I suggest though that you get a wireless Internet for your home. Also, try checking your usage. I doubt that you would reach your limit with normal use. If so, no need for the hassle.

-----
I've had unlimited for years and just saw that AT&T slammed me down to 2GB

It seems that, although I use my phone heavily every day for work and personal, I don't use the full 2GB

My question is: what kind of user uses more than 2 GB and should I pay the extra $5 to preserve my right to have unlimited in the future?

-----
i don't understand.

you had unlimited and ATT took it away without you knowing and you are now at 2GB?

i have unlimited...i must say i do enjoy using the iphone without fear of 'going over'.

i really would like to tether it to the ipad...but don;t want to lose the unlimited...

right now i don't see a way of doing the tethering without a plan.

i was at a conference where a guy using what he call cydia allowed his 3GS to provide wifi to his laptop without losing the unlimited.

sounded like a jail broken deal.

-----
Right now - very few if any people 'normally' go over 2GB. Those who do are rarely on WiFi, use a lot of audio and/or video streaming, etc OR are 'jailbroken' and are using tethering off contract terms. The problem is that in the feature as apps become more data intensive and audio/video streaming becomes more prevalent those with 2GB (or other) caps will have to start being a lot more careful.

Currently I have unlimited data plans on Verizon and AT&T and intend to keep them unless I am forced off as I do use quite a bit of data - my Verizon phone has the 'hot spot' feature so I can use my iPad, MB Air or even iPhone WiFi to access the Verizon data network and I do download and/or stream quite a few podcasts to my iPhone (I haven't listened to my car radio or cd player since I got my original iPhone).

-----
I would call AT&T. You are grandfathered in & they can't change your data unless you request it. The only people I know that go over are those without regular wifi access.

-----
People who stream audio or video a lot....

-----
You might look around your area for a Wi-Fi hotspot. Many McDonald's, Starbucks, and Barn's and Nobles have Wi-Fi.

-----
It is very difficult to calculate how much data you are actually using. By way of example, my housemate streams a radio station more or less continuously at her desk during the working day, and averages around 1.9 GB of data per month.

-----
Settings > General > Usage shows how much you've used. There seems to be no breakdown of this but you can reset it at any point.

-----
True, but....

If you're starting out, and have an idea of your normal time online, and how you use that time, there's no easy way in advance to figure out how that translates to data used.

Pretty much have to use the thing, then look back at the totals.

-----
I agree. I doubt that anyone can reliably estimate usage. If you're concerned, check it daily for a few days to get an idea. After that you can decide whether it needs checking at all, or perhaps weekly if you might get close to your monthly limit. It's worth considering how much you really need that usage there and then when you can use wifi for free in many places (such as at home!).

-----
Can they change your plan without telling you

-----
Why not an iPod touch?

-----
Just to be sure things are absolutely clear for a beginner, if you buy an iPhone (at least in the USA) from a carrier or from Apple, you WILL buy and pay for a contract with the carrier.

You may get the iPhone for as little as $49, but you will pay at least $55/month on a 24-month contract ($1320).

You cannot get an iPod Touch for $49 (new), but you can get one for a lot less than $1369.

-----
IMO it's important that people look at the total cost over, say, 2 years. Paying a high monthly tariff does not make sense if your usage is only occasional or in emergencies.

I suppose it's a generational thing but I've been amazed by the willingness of young people on relatively low salaries to pay large amounts ($100-ish) every month to speak to people they can mostly speak to for peanuts on a landline.

-----
If you mean that you have an old iPhone that is not connected and used as a phone, then the answer is yes.

I gave my original iPhone to my granddaughter to use. Basically it becomes like an iPod touch. Functional with wifi access but no phone capabilities. She can listen to the music, view the photos, use the game and educational apps and also view the internet and send emails when hooked to wifi.

-----
Also,

If you download skype/google voice/line 2 or some VOIP application then the Phone can be used.

-----
Yes, and if you get the Textfree app you can also text for free via wifi.

WiFi Printer for Iphone

Apple iPhone - WiFi Printer for Iphone

I have iPhone 4. I am planning to buy a printer which will print wirelessly.

My major work with computer is to scan paper documents and email them as well as receive the doucments by email and print them out.

Since I want to do this work using iphhone, I am looking for printer with scanner.

Also since I plan to buy the printer by mail i.e. without testing it, I want to be sure that I can scan too wirelessly.

Please let me know if any of you have used any model for this work and share the experience.

iPhone WiFi
Apple iPhone WiFi
It looks like buy.com has the HP wireless printer for sale today. Just check to see it's the same one with the scanner.

-----
That appears to be good.

-----
I use the HP Photosmart e-All-in-One Printer, D110 Series, Model Name: CN732A

I bought it to print wirelessly from the iPhone and my mac. It works great. About $80. Has a scanner built in.

Get it.

-----
Have you scanned any documents?
Was it easy?

-----
As part of calibration you have to scan a page. It's very easy.

-----
I have the hp B 210a all in one an it works great. However it is a print hog.
The printer costs approx $100 and it cost $70 to replace the ink cartridges.

-----
Actually, at least with PC's, any printer connected to a computer that is networked on a wireless network can be a network printer. I've printed from my iPhone many times to an Epson connected to my PC. Epson is nice because the ink is sunproof. It is also a scanner so theoretically anything I scan could be sent to my iPhone. My next printer will be that Kodak with the cheaper ink cartridges.

-----
Look at printers with ePrint. You can print to your printer anywhere in the world...

I don;t have it, but would be interesting. I use HP all in one, C309A, works well for me.

-----
I have an HP 8500 e printer. Thought I would not use the e printer part but it is a nice feature when away from home or office and can print something out for hubby or employees.

Also the iPhone works fine when home and on the network. You should find it very useful

Airport router vs Cisco Valet

Apple iPhone - Airport router vs Cisco Valet

I am in need of replacing a dying Linksys WRT54G router. We have had it for years so it has been a long time since I have had to set up a network in the house and I recall that it was not an easy feat when I did it years ago but I finally got a working network where we have a PC laptop, iMac, 2 iPhones, 3 TiVos and a wireless printer. I dread having to do this once again when I get the new router so I am hoping to find something that is easy.

I have been seeing on TV the Cisco Valet which is advertised to be easy peasy to set up so I am contemplating purchasing the Valet. I also am thinking of buying the Apple Airport Extreme MC340LL/A or the AirPort Express Base Station MB321LL/A There is a pretty substantial difference between the Valet ($89 on Amazon) and Airport Extreme ($159.00) and am looking for feedback on the 3 routers.

iPhone wifi
Apple iPhone wifi
I can speak only to the Airport Extreme. I like it. Easy to set up using a Mac and I've had no problems. Wireless printer, iPhone, ATV all have "found" it

-----
I agree, I have a mixed network of four Macs and one Linux server using my Airport Extreme. Very easy setup and it allows me to have a network drive and my HP Laser plugged into it.

-----
Do not get the Airport Extreme. It's way overpriced, is actually not that easy to set up, doesn't support NTFS for USB attached network storage, and it runs extremely hot. Mine cooked itself after about two years.

For roughly the same price as the Valet, you can get a Netgear that has more functionality and is incredibly easy to set up. Mine was little more than simply plugging it in and giving it the same network settings the Airport had. Total time from taking it out of the box to being fully online was about 5 minutes, and most of that was taken up by plugging in the physical connections (network cables to the modem and wired items and power cord).

-----
I recommend the airport express. That's my favorite.

-----
I agree with Jeff. Apple charges too much for the same thing. It is harder to configure than alternatives, that are cheaper. I bought an Extreme and still use it and it runs very hot compared to others.

I suggest you avoid NetGear. I have experience with several that just stopped working after a year or two. I set these up for both daughters and a couple friends. Several units died after about a year.

I find Linksys to be more durable, reasonable in price, and very easy to configure, compared to Apple.

-----
I'm on my 4th Apple Airport, they seem to last me about 2.5 years, although I honestly don't remember buying number 3, which would up the longevity.

I have kept my flat on a desk or shelf, but would not call them hot. Warm enough to attract a cat, definitely. Warm enough to cook itself, I would think not, but then again I am only getting about 2.5 years each. And yes, I did have an early ones with the overheating capacitors.

Since I keep staying with Apple, it is literally plug and play. I usually don't even change the wall wart.

-----
> I'm on my 4th Apple Airport, they seem to last me about 2.5 years, although I honestly don't remember buying number 3, which would up the longevity.

If my Netgear router lasts as long as the Airport, I'll have gotten more value out of it since it costs less.

> I have kept my flat on a desk or shelf, but would not call them hot. Warm enough to attract a cat, definitely. Warm enough to cook itself, I would think not, but then again I am only getting about 2.5 years each. And yes, I did have an early ones with the overheating capacitors.

I got the Airport Extreme to replace a Linksys shortly after I got the iPhone 3G, which was about two weeks after its release (I wasn't in line early enough) because the Linksys wouldn't let the iPhone connect to WiFi.

The Airport died on my a few months ago. It always ran hot. Maybe not hot enough to literally cook itself, but it was definitely more than warm to the touch, and sometimes the top surface was on the hot side. Apple said that was normal.

-----
I just had a slightly different experience.

I'm not getting a lot more life out of them than you, especially if you compare it to the life I have gotten out of two G4 desktops. I ran both full-time at full processor capacity for nearly 6 years running Folding@Home. In that time I replaced a fan in each and a power source in one. They both still function today.

As for bang for my buck, no, you are getting better value, but you know what you are doing, but many of us need the easier route.

Just remember, for most of us, wireless router set up is an moderately advanced task. That is why we turn to you, the expert for help, Jeffery. I have in the past had a uncommon set up and it required assistance to set up and troubleshoot. They have rolled some of what I was doing into current versions of the software.

-----
I am far from being an actual expert in it, I do not support routers, wired or wireless, for a living or anything. What I am is a technically minded computer geek, and I do work in IT. My only practical experience with routers is my own, and some family and friends.

I actually found the Airport Extreme to be harder to setup and maintain. The only time I've had to call Linksys for support on my old Linksys routers was when one of them actually broke, when I was trying to do something truly advanced, or when it wouldn't let my iPhone connect. I have not (yet?) had to contact Netgear support. The Airport, otoh, I had to call Apple several times because the setup was just plain obtuse. In trying to something only slightly more than a basic config, I even managed to stump the tech at Apple!

The problem I have with the Airport setup is that it uses a proprietary client-side configuration program rather than a web based setup like everyone else. Apple's Airport Manager has too many menus, toolbars and tabs, AND you need to be running their Bonjour Service (Windows) to even use the software. (If you're using an iOS device, you pretty much have to be running that service anyway...) The same setting I was looking for is easy to find on the old Linksys and my new Netgear.

-----
Interesting.

I'm still using the DLink router I've had for...at least 6 years, I forget exactly...& have had no problems connecting my various iDevices from the 2nd gen Touch to the iPhone4. They all find the router, ask for & accept my p/w, & I'm up & running.

-----
Do you have to reset it once a day at least?

-----
If you mean me & my DLink, no.

I hardly *ever* reset it. It's connected to my DSL modem & on 24/7 unless I either turn off all the power or the server goes down or somesuch.

Even if my computer is off it's still on & blinking & I can wifi with my iToys.

-----
I have an Airport Extreme mounted vertically on the wall in a special mount that Apple has and it runs no hotter than my old Buffalo or Linksys routers.

-----
Is there any wireless router which does not need a windows or Mac computer to set up?

Since in normal cases, a CDÂ is provided and needs to be run in the computer; It asks many questions so as to set parameter and this is a very daunting task for an average user.

-----
Yes. Most (all?) default to using DHCP, which means that they automatically allocate addresses to computers on the LAN (local area network). You just connect the router to your modem (assuming you have a separate DSL or cable modem) and switch it on. This gets you working straight away but you have an unprotected network until you go into the admin function and enable encryption, etc.

IMO setup CDs (often Windows-only) are supplied only because the setup in Windows used to be so unnecessarily difficult (I assume that is no longer the case with Vista or Win7).

We have a Belkin 54G router and this just worked straight away with our Macs.

-----
Ditto for me. I have a wireless printer, MacBook Pro, iPhone, Apple TV, and husband’s MacBook; all of these have no problems at all getting and staying connected.

4.2 and AIR PRINT work over WiFi

Apple iPhone - 4.2 and AIR PRINT work over WiFi

Does AIR PRINT work over WiFi or BLUETOOTH? I can't get it to identify my printer under BLUETOOTH

iPhone WiFi What we can do with Apple iPhone WiFi WiFi and the printer has to be shared on a Mac that is turned on and running OS X 10.6.5 with Printer Sharing turned on.

-----
I have MAC O.S. 10.6.5., I enabled PRINTER SHARING.. yet when I try to use the option in iOS 4.2., the Printer Options window pop up, I select, SELECT PRINTER it looks for my printer, but still get the "no printer found" message

-----
You have to share you printer also - two different things, "Printer Sharing" is in the Sharing pane in System Preferences, then in the Printers pane click on your printer and click "Share this Printer" or "Share on Network" something like that.

-----
enabled BOTH options and still nada :(

-----
Something tells me I'm going to run into the same thing when I get home and start monkeying around with Air Print.

-----
What they DIDN'T publicize is that AirPrint only works for 10 HP printers at the moment, with a few more to follow.

If you want to print to ANY printer, buy AirSharePro. Great app, anyway, because it does all kinds of stuff - and prints to any printer on a WiFi network.

-----
Not true, those 10 HP printers will work without a Mac on - all other printers have to be shared through a Mac to work through Airprint. Yes I know some of you don't have it working yet and I don't know why but I have been using Airprint for 2 months without an HP printer via shared printers on iMac and yesterday on a MB Air both running 10.6.5

-----
10.6.5 final or an earlier developer build that still included the Airprint drivers?

-----
Developer build but installing the final didn't remove them - I must have missed the 'notice' that they didn't include the Airprint Drivers from the final release (makes no sense as there was never an issue with it).

From what I have gathered, if you only have the final 10.6.5 installed you only have the HP Support, if you install the "removed" drivers it does work fine but you do have to download the drivers from non-apple sources.

Netflix over 3G can't seem

Apple iPhone - Netflix problem - Netflix over 3G can't seem

I can't seem to watch Netflix over 3G. Works fine when connected to a wireless network, but when I try watching over 3G I can't get a movie to start. It starts loading then jumps back to the main netflix screen. Worked in the past. Deleted and redownloaded the app. No luck.

Can anyone else get it to work ove 3G right now?

It looks like its a problem with the latest Netflix app update and iPhone 4. Many complaints on the app store about it

Tethering

Apple iPhone - Tethering

I am in more and more places where wifi is either secured or costs money. (looking to use my laptop)

I am taking a closer look at Tethering my ip4 to the laptop.

When I 'click' it on my ip. It says to call 611 or go to website

Website a little tough to navigate in ip so was wondering if anyone else is doing it

I am on $30 unlimited data.

iPhone WiFi
Meaghan For wallpaper for apple iphone WiFi
It's easier if you go to the Apps Store and download AT&T MyWireless Mobile.

-----
If you move to tethering, you will HAVE to give up your unlimited data, move to the $25 2GB data plan and pay another $20 ($45 total) to have the ability to tether, sharing the 2GB total. I would look into a MiFi device unless you use very little data.

-----
We have 3 iPhones in this household with varying usage of cellular data. My wife never goes up to even near 200 MB/month. Our housemate streams music at work and runs about 1.9 GB/month. I run about 200-300 MB/month.

So tethering with AT&T would add $15/month for 2 GB max.

How much would buying and using a Mifi cost for 5 GB max?

-----
Depends on carrier, you can get it as low as $25-$40 a month through Clear, Virgin, or a couple other pre-paids that I can't remember the name, Verizon & Sprint are $59.99 for 5GB or $39.99 for 250MB (Sprint has unlimited 4G data in available cities).

There is one I posted about from Clear called the iSpot that is only for Apple products and has unlimited data for $25 a month (4G) with 3G fall over is $35 a month or they have one that works on all products for $35 a month for 5GB.

-----
Ugh. Not giving up my unlimited.

Ugh. The pressure

-----
Have you ever checked to see how much cellular data you actually use?

-----
I'm in the same position. I have unlimited on my iPhone and not giving it up.

I bought a Samsung Captivate and an extra line just for tethering. It was cheaper than committing to $60 a month for the air card and I got 2 GB with an extra 1 GB for $10 any time I went over. I asked them at the AT&T store if the Captivate would tether and they said it would. An AT&T rep just told me that there is no modem support by AT&T for the Captivate. I don't want to steal it and I don't want to void my warranty. The other option they gave me was an air card, which is $60 per month for 5 GB, but there's a two-year commitment unless I pay upfront for the air card (they said probably around $200). I might do that, but I want to know for sure that's going to work before I plunk down $200 for yet another device.

-----
I hope it is within the return window for the Captivate, most Android phones (including my Verizon Droid Incredible) allow tethering but require 2.1 and root access and Samsung has neither currently. AT&T has a wireless device that provides WiFi data just like the MiFi which if you pay for another line ($9.99), a Data Plan ($25) and Tethering option ($20) you would only end up saving about $5 if you only use 2GB, if you use 5GB it would end up being $30 more ($10 per GB over 2).

It might be a few years out (4G / LTE) but mobile data pricing has to catch up with broadband, we would never pay mobile rates for the speed / reliability and limits we pay for wireless. I pay $30 each for the two phones I carry, which are likely capped at 5GB although I have never been charged overages, so $60 total for say 10GB and the speed of DSL I had ~15 years ago and paid maybe $30/mo and never a cap. I know have FiOS and while it is discounted in my 'bundle' on the bill it shows I pay $30 for 15x the speed on either phone and transmit hundred of GB per month...

-----
Unfortunately, it wasn't within the return window because I had a lot of problems with the phone itself initially. After several calls to AT&T support, they DOA'd the Samsung and gave me a new one just like it, but after a couple of weeks, it was doing the same thing. I took it back, but the initial 30 days was up. Since I have to have a dependable phone, I upgraded my main line to an iPhone 4. I called Samsung to see if I could get my money back on the Captivate under the warranty. A technical support person there told me that it sounded like it was getting too hot and that I shouldn't use a case with it. Sure enough, when I removed the clear, open front case that I got for it at the AT&T store at the time of the phone purchase, I have never received that error message again.

I wanted to try Android before the contract was up on my 3G. The Captivate is a pretty phone with a beautiful screen, but no competition for the iPhone. I might check into prepaid for my laptop and sell the Captivate.

Don't really want to commit to $60/month for an air card I'll only use part of the time and can't use in some places. I agree the pricing is ridiculous.

-----
Settings > General > Usage.

I was surprised how little I use. OK, it's just casual stuff (looking stuff up in the pub, that sort of thing), but surprising all the same. Sent 148 MB, Received 358 MB, since I got the phone last July.

-----
I am a huge cell data user. Huge.

Unlimited is excellent for me

I am constantly searching sites. For business reasons to stay on top oft clients climate

Constant news searching as well (market).

I send a lot of videos of products.

This was off the top of my head.

I will take a better look at the bill. ( which I cn do from here). But no matter how it fluctuates I am very dubious about giving up my unlimited.

-----
Short of movies/podcasts, streaming radio/music/tv I don't see how anybody can use much data bandwidth, the screen is way too small for any practical surfing, especially anything requiring the keyboard function. I find even the simplest things requiring zooming in and 'flicking' the screen about to read anything. I also think its absurd to have to pay extra for tethering just to use the same data bandwidth I'm already paying for. Its also next to impossible to use when AT&T doesn't have usable signal.

-----
I use between 3-5GB per month over the past year on my iPhone according to the "Usage Chart" on from ATT.com and on my Verizon Droid, it uses quite a bit more data per month, minimum was 4GB and max was almost 7GB (no overage charges) but I have also used Droid to tether iPhone and iPad and download files that were over 20MB (blocked over 3G download by iPhone).

-----
Not giving it up either..cause once you do...you can't get it back...they willl need to pry i out of my cold dead hands [said in my best Charlton Heston voice...] :)

WiFi shuts off

Apple iPhone - WiFi shuts off

Recently my iPhone 4 iOS4.1 has started to "log off" WiFi when it goes to sleep. I thought iOS4 was supposed stay logged on all the time. Any ideas?

When I first got my iPhone 4, WiFi stayed on even when it was asleep, my understanding was that was for apps like Skype to be able to get calls while asleep.

iPhone Wifi
Speed Test for iPhone WiFi
No, WiFi always shuts off after it goes to sleep to save battery.

Wifi always shuts off after X minutes of sleeping it might have reconnected so fast you didn't notice or you the phone wasn't asleep long enough for it to shut off (I think it is 15 min ).

The only exception is if there is no 3G or EDGE (airplane mode?), it may stay on but otherwise it shuts off.

If you look in the manual it can give you specifics but it does shut off.

iPhone Wi-Fi issues....

Apple iPhone - Wi-Fi issues....
Details - IPhone 4. All updates done.

Problem: occasionally the connection will "hang". I'll be checking email - will start and not finish. Using Safari, page may start to open, then stall. Facebook app - same issue. eBay app - same issue.

Other Wi-Fi devices in the home do not do this - so it is not a router issue, I don't think.

How I fix it - go into iPhones settings. Turn Wi-Fi off, then back on. Now it works again. It may last a while (hours, a day perhaps, sometimes no more than 15 or 30 minutes), but eventually it will hang again.

Usually only 1 Wi-Fi device is connected at a time; it is password protected, so it's not others logging in, either.

Is the Router's firmware up to date? I have a Linksys 610N dual band router and am currently only using the 2.4 gig freq. WEP2. It works perfectly with my iPhones. My WiFi was problematic (and exhibited the symptoms you've outlined with 2 other PCs) until I found the new firmware.

Being new to iPhones and only recently took the plunge into Apple gear with the purchase of an iPhone 4, I don't know what the iPhone 3 network protocol is, but it might be worth looking into if your router firmware is, indeed, up to date.

I found an on-topic thread here (http://forums.smallnetbuilder.com/showthread.php?t=3465). I hope you can find some info there that might might assist you further.

Wireless

Apple iPhone - Wireless

Once in a while my iPhone drops the wifi and asks for a password. Why would that happen?

Sometimes I have to enter wifi password, sometimes not.

Completely new to iPhone

Apple iPhone - Completely new to iPhone

Please forgive me if this is a really stupid question, but I am wondering if there is anyway to get WIFI through my home network, even though I am using a wired modem for my Cable Internet connection.

I am on a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Mac with Airport card installed.

buy an airport extreme or express. run the cable out of the modem and into it. then you will have WIFI

-----
There are much cheaper WiFi routers than Apple¹s, like D-Link or Linksys. I am guessing the Airport card is Œn¹ speed (the fastest), if so just make sure you buy an Œn¹ capable router.

-----
Just buy a airport extreme and connect it to the Ethernet port out of the cable modem. I do the same with a Adam modem

-----
Absolutely, I do. None of my computers are connected to my cable modem by wire. EVERYTHING in the house, at least a dozen devices, is connect by Wi Fi

-----
I'm using Windows & have DSL internet -- I plugged my wireless router (rather than my computer) into the DSL modem (which is wired to the phone access point) & run my various devices off the wireless network (computers, iToys....)

-----
Get a WLAN (WiFi) router.

-----
Thank you all for your input. I should have been more clear with my question.

My husband wants as little WiFi as possible, and prefers a hardwired router to minimize EMF exposure. I want WiFi for the iPhone. Is there a way to get the WiFi for the iPhone while still using the hardwired router for our computer network?

Is there a router that has the option of hardwire + WiFi and the ability to switch between the two, so that I could turn the WiFi on and off at will?

-----
All modern wifi routers include a (wired) ethernet switch *as well as* a wifi base station. You can switch off the wifi when not required but it might be tedious. Are you prepared to go into the router's admin, using a computer connected via ethernet, *every* time you want to use the iPhone, then again when you stop using it?

-----
Sorry I'm chiming in late here. Since the Mac isn't using its airport to receive wifi, you could have it send a wifi signal that your iPhone can pick up. Then it would be easier to turn Airport off and on in the Menu Bar. You already have everything you need to try it.

-----
That turns off the WiFi unit in the Mac, not the WiFi base station. Her husband want to minimize RF radiation (transmission), and wants to turn off the base station when not used.

I agree that the amount of RF radiation is negligible, but I'm not the one that needs to be convinced.

-----
YEs. The Airports, and most WLAN routers from Cisco, Linsys, Netgear, etc, do both WiFi and wired LAN.

Not as a simple switch option. Some may have a control to turn the WiFi on/off, but it would be really annoying to have to go into the config of the router every single time.

Your husband is being paranoid. The RF output is too low to be of a concern, unless he's going to mount it on his head and leave it there for years on end.

-----
Yes, most WiFi routers have one or more ethernet (rj-45) sockets. You can plug in as many direct connected devices as there are sockets (many have 4) and have multiple WiFi devices (or just one) at the same time.

Depending on what 'at will' means, yes you can turn the WiFi on and off. It's probably not one click, at least not on the three or four WiFi routers I've worked with. But at most a few clicks, to turn off wifi (while continuing wired connections.)

Wi-Fi problem follow up

iPhone - Wi-Fi problem follow up

We made a trip to the Apple Store after making an appointment with the "Genius Bar" to have them look at my wife's 3G that was having Wi-Fi problems. As it turns out, she said that she had been having Bluetooth connectivity problems for a while as well. Anyway, we went there Sunday afternoon at our appointed time, about a half hour before the place closed for the day. It was busy and noisy, very high energy. Anyway, after waiting 10 or 15 minutes, and being "checked in" by at least 3 folks, a fellow came to us. We explained the problem, and what we had already done (full restore). After warning us that if he had to replace the phone we would loose all data on it, and us telling him that wasn't a problem due to our back ups and me.com accounts, he took it in the back. After about 5 minutes he came back out with a brand new phone (at least I assume it was brand new as opposed to refurb, I didn't specifically ask him now that I think of it). Anyway, it was already activated with my wife's number and operational. During dinner on our way home, I got it set up on her me.com account, so she had her contacts and email. Then when we got home I synced it up on iTunes. Everything went very well. Only thing that was lost was her custom voice mail greeting (no biggy). Best thing was that since it was still under warranty, we got out with a grand total of $.00 being spent!

One thing I noticed was that after syncing her phone with iTunes, I put my phone on the same machine, as we always have. Now, instead of saying "Ken's iPhone", when iTunes recognizes the phone, it just says "iPhone".

Everything else seemed OK. It called my wife's phone by name, as it always had mine. Unsure what the deal is with that, but I don't think it's necessarily a problem.

Next time your wife's phone is connected to iTunes, simply click on the name of the iPhone under devices (you said it is currently named "iPhone") and after clicking on the name, you can rename it "wife's iPhone" or anything you want. Same way you would rename a playlist or such.

Wi fi problems

Wi fi Problems

Why is it when I go into a place that has wi fi I can click on it but
when I go there the numbers and address is not in the setup boxes ?

Is that because it's unusable?

Do you get the pop up that asks if you want to join the network, or is it
just showing up that you are hooked to the connection? (Wi-fi signal in the
bar at top?)

I just check on my own I have the ask to join Off because it burns up my battery Asking to join all the networks.

I am just curious that sometimes when I go in a place I will check to see if they have wifi and if they do Why the info isn't there

Little known fact turning the "ask to join" off, does not really save on the battery, only turning WiFi off does. Turning off the "ask to join" just keeps it from popping up, the WiFi radio is still scanning constantly for networks and connecting to any that have already been joined or have the same names as those that you have joined. For instance all Linksys routers by default are have SSIDs of 'linksys' if the user of the router does not secure their router and does not change the name of the SSID and you join one network with that name then come in contact with another with the same name, your phone will automatically join it regardless of if it is a different network or not. I learned this the hard-way was I accidently used one of my neighbors while walking the dog one time then my phone was joining every network with the same default name as I was driving to and from work, I was joining and leaving a network about every 1/4 of a mile - you would be amazed at how many unsecured 'linksys' WiFi networks there ;-).

Long story longer, if you really want to save on battery life turn WiFi OFF not just the "ask to join network" option.
_____
Or.. My guess is because you're tapping on the blue arrow before you join the network. Since you haven't joined the network yet, your iPhone does not yet have that data - it's assigned to the device when it joins the network.

Tap on the left side of the network name to join it. Then, when you have successfully joined, you can tap the blue arrow to see the network info.
