I am using iPhone 4 and out of my home country. I am on international roaming for voice but have disabled my data due to cost considerations. In a cafe, I use public wifi for mail down and upload. if I see a map, it vanishes when I leave the cafe. How do I save it so that I can still monitor my progress by GPS which works in any case?

you can "cache" maps and later use them in MotionXGPS. A great app. -----
I don't think you can save the maps on the native app, which is Google Maps. But there are apps, for a price, you can download that have built-in maps and work offline, like NDrive, Papago, etc. Search map or GPS in the app store.
