Antivirus and Antimalware programs

Apple iPhone - Antivirus and Antimalware programs

When I went to use my 3GS today the following message appeared on the screen with a red bar over it:

Your computer remains infected by viruses! They can cause data loss and file damages and need to be fixed as soon as possible. Return to Security Tool & download it to gaurd your PC.

Is this a real message. If there is such a thing as Security Tool I've never been there. (Where is it?) Suggestions please.

iPhone Tutorial
Apple iPhone Tutorial
Well this would be your pc which is not an iPhone!

You need to run whatever antivirus and antimalware programs you have installed on your pc.

It was just a coincidence that you got the message when you had your 3G connected.

And the warnign you probably got may well have been one of those virus things so do not click on it, run your installed AV program asap!

-----
That's a scam. It's surprising to hear you got that on an iPhone though. I was only aware of that malware on Windows.

-----
I take it this is on your PC, not your iPhone...

That is a fake virus alert, but your pc is infected.

Don't touch it and install and run malwarebytes.org

AT&T new texting plan

Apple iPhone - AT&T new texting plan

Thank Goodness that AT&T finally has a different texting package. I have been asking them for a while.

They only had 200 texts for $5.00, 1500 texts for $15.00 or unlimited texts for $20. (these are single line prices) Now apparently they have done away with the $15 plan and added 1000 texts for $10. I only use 500-700 a month and hated paying $15 and only using half of them.

So, check it out on your account if you are like me and don't need the 1500 texts but need more than the 200. Yippee! lol.

BTW, I am in Kentucky. Maybe they haven't changed yet for all areas.

iPhone ATT
Apple iPhone ATT
I *loathe* texting, but occasionally I'm in a situation where I do a lot of it. So ordinarily I don't even use 200 texts, but there have been times when I went over. I solved that with an app called Textfree -- you can send all the texts you like at no charge. The only down side is you can't send photos.

-----
Anne...I use textfree and gmail...i do believe wth the new textfree u CAN send photos! :)

-----
That could very well be. Ordinarily I text so seldom that Textfree sends me messages reminding me that I haven't used my Textfree number in weeks.

-----
Text Now also gives me a warning that I haven't used my number. So I send myself a text takes a second and keeps the account active.

-----
Thank you for mentioning the new text plan. I was on the unlimited I(because I text more than 200 a month) but certainly won't use 1000 texts a month, so even saving $10 a month is great. I am very new to the iphone. Bought a 3G in early December. I couldn't see a reason to get a 4G when I don't even know what all the 3G can do. Sure don't need 2 cameras. ;-) Anyway, I have a 2 year contract with ATT so I can't upgrade or change anything about the phone until Dec. 2012, right? I never texted on my old cell phone so it is fun texting friends of mine.

-----
Your upgrade date is rarely the same as your contract renewal date. If your monthly line charge is greater than $100 and in good standing you can upgrade every 12 months. If you are on a secondary line (IE pay $9.99/mo + data plan) your upgrade is likely every 16-20 months (depending on total account charges per month and account standing). They want to keep you locked into a contract so they (have) let you get a new phone before contract expires so that you renew it for 2 more years....

-----
I can vouch for that. I don't use Textfree, but I regularly communicate with someone who does, and she texts me photos.

-----
I find Text Now which also works great. Picture messaging and text messaging. They give you a free number in your area code.

-----
And I most of the time don't need 200 texts, so thankfully they have left me grandfathered in to that package.

Highway robbery that it is. Texting cost them virtually nothing since it uses the transmissions to announce the phone to the local tower.

-----
I was curious so I downloaded the text free with voice. It's nice because there are some countries you can text for free. BUT does this mean I need to get my friends in those countries to download text free also? Because otherwise they still have to pay to send a text to me, right?

-----
Your use of a free texting app isn't going to affect your friends. If they pay for texts, that won't change unless they use a free texting app as well.

-----
It's only only free for the one that sends the text.

Calendar App that syncs with Outlook 2007

Apple iPhone - Calendar App that syncs with Outlook 2007

I am brand new to the iPhone and looking for a calendar app that I can sync with the Outlook 2007 program on my PC. So far all I have found is a program called "MobileMe" which requires a monthly fee. Can anyone recommend something else that works well and doesn't have a monthly fee attached to it? It would be great to also have a program that syncs with both the Outlook calendar and contacts.

iPhone Calendar
Apple iPhone Calendar
Are you looking for a replacement calendar, or are you only looking to
sync with Outlook?

If the second, iTunes. Which you need to sync the iPhone anyway...

-----
I use companion link and love it!! It does everything contacts and calendar and I have it sync to Google as well as a back up to my desktop

http://www.companionlink.com/products/cl4.html

-----
I'm using Companion Link to sync Outlook to Google (for use with my Droid). Just be careful how you have it set up if you use it on more than one computer. If set to "merge" it will cause dupes every time.

-----
Outlook 2007 will sync everything with the iPhone you just have to tell it to in settings.

Ensure your phone is connected to iTunes/pc

Highlight your device

Tab to the info tab and press space

Tab until you hear Mobile Me

Tab 3 more times and you will hear "Sync Contacts with" and you are at the start of what to start syncing with iTunes/Outlook 2007.

-----
iTunes will do that for you when you are connected via usb. If you want to sync over the air then you can use google's sudo Exchange server.

iPod has Distorted Play

Apple iPhone - iPod has Distorted Play

I bought my iPhone 4 in mid December, but have used the iPod app as a stand-alone player, without earphones. Recent attempts to use the iPhone 4 as a mp3 with ear buds result in some music sounding distorted.

It sounds like a novelty song with the singers pretending to sing underwater. It happens only with the ear buds, both the old ear buds and with the new ones that came with the phone.

Do I need to do something differently, or do I need to exercise the warranty?

iPhone
Apple iPhone
Are you sure that it's fully seated when you plug it in?

-----
That was it - thank you.

It was not fully seated - so simple.

I have muscle weakness and the port is a little tight - but now I know the feel when it is fully in.

-----
Do a check.
Do those earbuds work well with other devices?
If so, something's wrong with your iPhone. Something might be stuck inside the jack.

iTunes music to CD to iPhone?

Apple iPhone - iTunes music to CD to iPhone?

How do I burn iTunes music to a CD so I can get it on my iPhone some way.

iPhone iTunes
Apple iPhone iTunes
You put music on the iPhone (& iPod) by using iTunes. There is no reason to put in on CD first.

Just create a playlist, then "drag" that playlist to you iPhone.

-----
No need to burn a CD to get your music from iTunes to the iPhone. When you connect your iPhone to your computer with iTunes running, either set the settings to sync all your music to the iPhone, or make a new playlist, and set that to sync to your iPhone.

If you make a playlist, then just drag the music you want to the playlist.

No CD involved.

-----
Sorry, my wife did nit make her Question clear. what she wants to know is how to burn itunes to a CD.

-----
So no need to mention iPhone in the subject line?

You burn playlists. Create a playlist and then use File > Burn Playlist to Disc. Playlists can be manual or "smart". You can burn the CD as CD format, MP3, or data. Make sure you use the format you want.

Or is the question: how do I burn all my iTunes to CD as a backup?

-----
Create playlist then click file > burn playlist to disk

iPhone 5

Apple iPhone - iPhone 5

I'm debating about buying the iPhone 4 or waiting for the iPhone 5. Is it a sure thing that the iPhone 5 will be out this summer or is it still a rumor.

iPhone 5Apple iPhone 5 Until actually announced it will be just a rumor. That being said, Apple traditionally adheres to a general product release schedule which would put the iPhone 5 available in late second quarter or early third quarter.

-----
New iPhones shipped in June, 2007, in July, 2008, in June, 2009, and in June, 2010.

-----
So the iPhone 5 should be out in 5 months!!! I love my iPhone 4 so I don't know if I will upgrade right away. It's got to be a revolutionary change or I wait.

-----
So far, I've upgraded every year. Having a new phone basically funded by sale of the previous phone, I never have a phone out of warranty and a brand new battery each year. Oh ya, I get new features each time too... lol.

-----
I have a feeling, since the iPhone 4 has yet to be software unlocked and it is available on Verizon that we aren't going to be able to get as much this year. Not saying that a phone in good condition will not be worth at least the subsidized price we paid but I don't think we will be able to sell them at the higher prices this time....

-----
How do you sell your iPhone 5?

-----
I've sold them successfully both on Craig's List and on eBay. One person I sold via CL told me he'd been robbed by someone during a CL sale, so I usually offer to meet at the local Apple Store to validate the phone is in good shape, etc.

-----
I never considered selling my 3GS when I upgrade to 5 (at some point, hopefully this Summer). That's a great idea!

(1) May I please ask how much you were able to get for your 3GS?

(2) Also, what does one have to do to wipe out their phone before they are selling the phone to someone?

-----
I don't think the 3Gs will be worth much when the 5 comes out... It will be 2 model years old. I was going to keep mine as a backup since I think I've missed my window of opportunity. The used market will probably be significant on the 4 when the newer model debuts.

Now I was dumb to keep the 3Gs as I was holding out for the broken promise of a white one. Won't do that again...

-----
I believe I got around 350 for the phone, but that was almost a year ago. One of the best things to do is search recent completed listings on eBay for your model. It should give you an idea of what you can expect to get for it today. You can wipe the phone via Settings/General/Reset menu.

-----
Or pass it on to a friend or relative?

-----
how do work your contract? Do you have to add a line to get a new device or just extend for two more years?

-----
I guess I should have explained that better. I have 4 lines on my family plan with 2 usually renewing in alternate years, so each year I can use one of those eligibilities to get the new iPhone for my number.

Navigon navigation software

Apple iPhone - Navigon navigation software

Has anyone experience with this application?
Feedback?

iPhone GPS
Apple iPhone GPS
I'm a vision impaired iPhone user and most VIP's use Navigon as it gives turning info in plenty of time before the turn. (Yes you read that correctly - most blind people with an iPhone use Navigon - you didn't know your iPhone had speech on it, or magnification? Have a look in Settings > General > Accessibility)

VIP's are also using TomTom but that tends to give the intended info on or after the turn - this could be due to the speed being too slow I suppose.

-----
I knew that....
What I didn't know is that most blind people drive....

-----
Well actually a lot of blind people like to check their driver is taking the right route! Lol But seriously Navigon can be used for walking as well.

-----
I love the Navigon app. it has completely replaced my TomTom device in my car. It is great. Accurate. Good graphics. Easy to use. It even tells you the local speed limit! I bought it last summer when it went on sale.

-----
does it announce speed cameras?

-----
Why didn't you just get the TomTom app then? I think TomTom app is better than Navigon app.

-----
Navigon is a very good application. But the price is very high!!!!

-----
I disagree.

The price for Navigon (or TomTom, for that matter), is quite inexpensive for a fully functional GPS unit. Free-standing ones of comparable quality sell for 3-5 times the price.

Mophie 6000 belt holster

Apple iPhone - Mophie 6000 belt holster

If you have an otterbox for your iphone 4 and you do not like the clip style holster there is one nice alternative that I found out by accident.

I have a leather holster that I ordered from mophie for my juice pak air. It's the model 6000

It holds your otterbox defender perfectly.

iPhone Mophie
Apple iPhone Mophie
I thought about getting it, but it has a spring clip that does not lock to my belt as the Otter box clip does. I have lost phones with spring clips before.

-----
I used to work around heavy equipment and climb 230 foot towers and I have only dropped a phone twice with a belt clip in 5 years. Both times it caught on the seatbelt leaving my pickup, because I wear it on the left side. Now this is with a chromed belt clip. This is the holster I use with my 2 year old iPhone, that has never been dropped. I think it was the antenna on the Treo that was catching.

Since the Mophie uses a leather covered metal slip. Take it to a shoe repair and for less than $5 and have them stitch it into a belt loop. You will probably have it done and walk out in minutes. Of course the hard part will be finding a shoe repair shop, but you won't drop your phone or holster.

-----
How does the model 6000 attach to your belt? Does it use a belt clip? I'm always concerned about it slipping up and off my belt.

-----
Got a better option, go to AMAZON and get the Treo 650 holster, and they have not only the belt clip, there are some models with LOOPS too. Thread your belt through the loops, no worries.

-----
Or for those who jeans and not slacks, go find a CLC cell holster, made of ballistic nylon with elastic side panels. They last many years and stretch to fit phones up to about 5.5" tall. It has a metal belt clip, on top of a 1.5 wide nylon loop. CLC makes tool bags and tool belts so look in hardware stores.

One caution, if the phone or case is painted plastic or has that rubbery coating, the holster will rub it off the phone with long use. The edging on the holster wore off the paint on my Treo 650 around the "ear piece" after 3 years.

I use a Griffin Elan case with leather on my iPhone and after about 2 years I see no wear from the holster.

Tab Key

Apple iPhone - Tab Key

Is there a "tab" key hidden somewhere on the iPhone keyboard? Am I missing something obvious?

iPhone Tutorial
Apple iPhone Tutorial
No one uses a tab on a phone? ;)

-----
I've been wanting it all along. It's especially wanted when you want to indent a paragraph while writing an email. Like this one.

-----
You want to indent a single line?

So space 5 times. Or get a BT keyboard. If you are typing that much on a iPhone, you probably want a keyboard anyway.

Archie, you and I are no youngsters, but I don't even think they are teaching indentation in school anymore. And when you and I went to school, no indentation was usually taught for typed business letters. For handwritten letters on unlined paper or manuscripts, maybe.

-----
You might not find it useful but I, and many others, think otherwise. Every time I find the need for a Tab key, I miss the old Windows Mobile, although I wouldn't trade iPhone for that.

And N.A., it's not only business letters that people write. I personally find Tab key especially useful when I write notes. Makes it easier to align indentions.

But then again, it's all about personal preference.

-----
The "tab" function is usualy done with the "next" key. Like filling out forms on a web site. Otherwise, no "tab" key.

-----
Filling out forms is exactly why I inquired about the "tab" key. So if the keyboard doesn't show a "next" key I'm out of luck?

-----
Scroll down and tap the next field needing input.

-----
I was curious about this so I waited to see if anyone responded with an answer. None appears to be coming.

No, if there is no next button, then either scroll down the page and tap the next box needing filling, or hit the done button and scroll down to the next box that needs filling. Either way scroll.

Wiped all my data

Apple iPhone - Wiped all my data (again)

For the second time in a year, my iphone 3G has inexplicably wiped a large number of my Notes - just gone!

I sync with a Windows XP desktop to MS Outlook using iTunes. I do not sync with any other machine. Sometime about last Summer, a number of Notes just vanished, and I had a session with an Apple guru lasting several hours (yes - hours) before we got stability again. All has been well since, but, looking for some data today, I suddenly find that only 9 out of 22 or 23 Notes are still on the iPhone. They are missing from Outlook too so this must have occurred before the last sync. This is my impportant data and this ............. iPhone is simply destroying it. My impression has been all along that the iPhone is not really quite compatible with the MS software - only 99% stable, not 100%.

Help! Will the backup (or an archive in Outlook) have the data? Last time there was another source to reconstitute much of it from but not this time.

iPhone Tutorial
Apple iPhone tutorial
I quit using the notes app because of that kind of stuff...things missing & sync problems all the time. I don't have time to be fighting my phone or worried that something won't be there next time I need it! I am an extremely busy mom to 3 young children & have my own business. I bought the awesome notes app (corny app name I know) & it is my favorite! I had tried about 10 others before I settled on this one... It syncs everything with google

-----
I too had issues with Notes from apple on the iphone. This was early in the iphone emergence. I lost valuable data and at that time there was no way I could figure out to back it up. I've abounded apples notes and have mored over to a web based app called Evernotes. They have an app for the iPhone and with Safari on the mac it's easy to retrieve. I can also retrieve on any machine, windows and mac the info in Evernote. This works for me and I love it. Do some research. Evernotes.

-----
I don't do a lot of notes (iPhone4), so I just email them to my home address occasionally. I haven't lost any on syncs anyway.

-----
When I attempt to go to my Evernote web address a pop-up warning says it is a possible phishing site and it won't let me override it even though it has an ignore button.

I am testing two note apps trying to decide which I will keep. Simplenote and YouNote. Both are easy and free, and allow email backup.

-----
Make sure it is www.Evernote.com
It is not a phishing site.

-----
I also recommend Notebooks.

-----
Sorry to hear that Nick. Could it be the syncing software and not the iPhone that is losing the data?

I use a Mac and I have not lost a note or any data in the almost 2 years I have had my iPhone. Problems with duplicates, yes, but no problems with losing notes.

-----
Have located the umpteen bits of data now. I agree with those other users who have found the MS/iPhone combination a tad less than reliable. Now could that ever be said of any other of Mr Gates's products - now be honest.

Last Summer, I had a major loss, and, as I said in my first message in this thread, was literally hours on the phone to one of the Apple techies before he got my Notes back and the combination stable and predictable. I was struck by his volunteering, without me offering question or comment, that "We know the software to be stable with Windows", almost sounding like he was talking to himself. It sounded to me like he was convincing himself. All I can say is that the Calendar does slightly odd things (that aren't always deletable) with the Outlook Calendar, particularly on repeating appointments. And the Notes are liable to duplicate themselves when amended, synced to Outlook, then synced back. And sometimes they vanish (twice for me). It is, as I said before, only about 99% reliable. I'd set up a file in Windows to save the Outlook *.pst file daily to a different place if it wasn't going to fill the HDD in no time!

-----
Get a MobileMe account and synchronise both your Outlook and iPhone through there.

Happens over the air and seems to work much better with Outlook and it's flakiness.

-----
I had the same thing happen 2 me but all of my notes were wiped out I powered off the phone & turned it back on & all of the notes were back it only happened once & hasn't happened since I asked a couple of friends that have an iPhone & it's never happened 2 them no one can explain it so I chalked it up as a tweak & forgot about it

"Notes" App Synchronization

Apple iPhone - Notes App Synchronization

I have an iPad (WiFi + 3G), a 3GS iPhone, both running iOS 4.2, this Intel MacBook Pro I am writing on, and an Intel iMac desktop. All the settings I am aware of on all 4 devices are set to automatically sync my Notes app's (present on all 4) wirelessly via MobileMe. I have very current notes on the iPad (which is where the majority of my Notes writing occurs), but cannot get it to sync with the other devices. Am I mistaken, or did iPad and iPhone (3GS and 4) become enabled to sync Notes over the air if they are running iOS 4.2? What's even more unusual is that when I changed a Notes font setting on MobileMe on my iMac, the font changed on the iPad, but it still will not sync with the contents of the iPad Notes (i.e., won't even sync with MobileMe). Any suggestions? I did hear somewhere that there was a new procedure required to run Find My iPhone or Find My iPad after iOS 4 came out, but don't know if that has anything to do with Notes synchronization.

iPhone Apps
Apple iPhone Apps
with 4.x (4.0 on iPhone and 4.2 on iPad) Note Sync was done by account. In other words in Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendar each account allows you to turn Notes On or Off. In the Notes App itself in the top right hand corner there is an "< Accounts" button and you might find that you have two or more options. For example, I have "All Notes", "BB-GMail", "BB-MMe", "From My Mac", and "Ofc-GApps" - meaning I can view "All Notes" (similar to "All Inbox", this Gmail, my MMe account, Notes on my Mac (from iTunes syncing I guess), and my Work/Office Google Apps account. I am guessing you will find yours saving your notes to one account on the iPad and a different account somewhere else...

-----
I think you are exactly right. I did a couple of quick tests with that hypothesis in mind, and it makes sense. Now I have to take the time to look at the four different computers and work out where the accounts are exactly and how to work out the sync situation so things go to the right places.

-----
Well, I had turned off all notes on my email accounts and I didn't realize that my notes were in my email accts. I just went back and turned on my notes again and wala all of my notes are back! WHEW!!

-----
When I first started to use Notes, I looked for a long time, posted a few list queries here and finally figured out that the Notes were stored in Apple Mail on my Macs.

Shattered Face

Apple iPhone - Shattered Face

I just got a new iPhone4 last week.

I hadn't gotten around to getting a case for it. It fell hard on the concrete in front of my house. arrrgh, the glass is shattered. It still works though! Any suggestions? Should I get it fixed, or do you think I'm gonna need to buy a new one?

iPhone Case
Apple iPhone Case
Take it to an Apple Store - I have heard many a story of phones being replaced at no charge if they are broken in the first 30 days. Even if they don't replace it, they can fix it for a LOT cheaper than the cost of a new unsubsidized phone ($699 for 16GB/$799 for 32GB).

-----
There are also many third parties that do this repair.

-----
I have had a couple of friends replace their own. They said it wasn't too difficult & these guys aren't really techies either. Most important thing is to make sure you have completely shut off your phone (holding down the top button til it says slide to shut off & screen goes completely black). Otherwise your phone shorts out. I think the cell repair guys fix it for $65. If you do it yourself it's about $30.

-----
You can also check with the credit card company. Many card companies offer purchase protection as a free benefit of the service. It basically allows you to replace/fix the unit for free if something happens within the first 60 days. You would have to check the terms of the specific card company you use.

One potential problem is the charge on your card is not really the full value of the device since you are getting a subsidy from the carrier. In this case, they may only cover what you paid for the phone.

att unlimited loophole

Apple iPhone - att unlimited loophole

In an unadvertised loophole, AT&T has allowed subscribers who have had an unlimited data plan in the past to switch back. That includes anyone who had an iPhone before June, when the limited plans took effect.

iPhone ATT
Apple iPhone ATT
I wonder if this also applies to those who chose to get tethering. If so, can I pay for tethering and keep the unlimited plan.

-----
I doubt it. Even before they went to tiered pricing. They would not let me keep unlimited

I kept it. Tethering would be nice. But not giving up my unlimited.

-----
Has Verizon even officially announced the data plans? I'm just seeing quotes of rumors.

-----
Yes, Unlimited Data for $29.99 but is announced as a promo only.

-----
When I saw the post, I called AT&T. The representative said they are only doing it under certain circumstances, but not for everyone, and I was not able to do it. Any hints on what to say if I call and ask again? I am truly sorry I switched to a limited data plan.

-----
I would threaten to leave and go to Verizon. I don't think AT&T wants to lose anymore subscriber.

-----
From the beginning, I've thought that it was unfair to penalize the entire country for problems in San Francisco and New York. It would have been better to put users there on data limited plans and leave the rest of us alone. Maybe that is the "special circumstances" where you can switch back - if they know you won't cause congestion where their network capacity is low.

As for Verizon "unlimited" - notice that it is for a limited time only: BAIT AND SWITCH. Never, ever, listen to these limited time only offers or rates. Always check and see what it will be after the initial 3 months or whatever the term is. You might just get sticker shock - because you will be on the limited / standard rate for a heck of a lot longer than you will be the introductory rate. Just saying - be smart - not a sucker.

Ringtones

Apple iPhone - Ringtones

I have searched the messages and could not find an answer to my problem, Which is I purchased two ringtones from T-Tunes and can sync to my iPhone. They show up in the iPod, Album folder but I cannot get them into the ringtone folder so I may use them as a ringtones.

iPhone Ringtone
Apple iPhone Ringtone
Where do they show in iTunes? If they are not in Ringtones they probably have the wrong filename extension. Choose one, right-click > Get Info and see what it is. It should be .m4r.

-----
Yeah. And if it's an m4a, just rename the extension to m4r.

-----
Can we create our own ringtones by changing the extension?

Lik if I have a song which I want to have as my ringtone, then can I do it by just changing the extension.

-----
Convert it to AAC (m4a) first. Then change the extension to m4r. But you have to trim it to not more than 40 seconds first.

-----
It looks like a lot of steps but it is really easy.

1. If you don't use the default import encoder, change Preferences > General > Import Settings > Import Using to AAC Encoder.

2. Choose your track and play it to decide the start and stop times. The duration can be anything up to 40 seconds.

3. Right-click > Get Info > Options to change the Start and Stop times to what you decided in (2). You can be precise to 0.001 secs if you want. Play this to make sure you've got what you want.

4. Right-click > Create AAC Version. This creates an edited version containing only what's between the Start and Stop times.

5. Right-click > Get Info > Summary to find the location of the edited version (not really necessary as it will be exactly adjacent to the original track in the iTunes Media > Music > Artist > Album folder).

6. Delete the edited version from iTunes but keep the file.

7. Navigate to the file using Finder or Windows Explorer and change the filename extension from m4a to m4r.

8. Either double-click the m4r file or iTunes > File > Add to Library to add it back to iTunes. It will go into Ringtones, not Music, and the file will move to the Ringtones folder.

9. Get Info > Options on the original track to change the Start and Stop times back to the defaults. You can do this at any point after (4).

10. Repeat 2-9 for your other ringtones.

11. Sync the phone to transfer your ringtones.

12. If you don't use the default import encoder, change Preferences >
General > Import Settings > Import Using back to your usual one.

-----
Or download the free Ringtone Maker app.

I bought it to print wirelessly from the iPhone and my mac. It works great. About $80. Has a scanner built in.

Get it.

-----
Have you scanned any documents?
Was it easy?

-----
As part of calibration you have to scan a page. It's very easy.

-----
I have the hp B 210a all in one an it works great. However it is a print hog.
The printer costs approx $100 and it cost $70 to replace the ink cartridges.

-----
Actually, at least with PC's, any printer connected to a computer that is networked on a wireless network can be a network printer. I've printed from my iPhone many times to an Epson connected to my PC. Epson is nice because the ink is sunproof. It is also a scanner so theoretically anything I scan could be sent to my iPhone. My next printer will be that Kodak with the cheaper ink cartridges.

-----
Look at printers with ePrint. You can print to your printer anywhere in the world...

I don;t have it, but would be interesting. I use HP all in one, C309A, works well for me.

-----
I have an HP 8500 e printer. Thought I would not use the e printer part but it is a nice feature when away from home or office and can print something out for hubby or employees.

Also the iPhone works fine when home and on the network. You should find it very useful

otterbox case

Apple iPhone - otterbox case

anyone here use a different type belt case for the otterbox defender,Im not
really the holster type and prefer a case . I was wondering if anyone has found one that works with the otterbox defender?

iPhone Otterbox
Apple iPhone Otterbox
Yes, I used a Case Logic ballistic nylon zippered case designed for a camera which I found at Sears. It also has a zippered pocket which I use to store my Jawbone ICON bluetooth headset. It costs 10 bucks and comes with a caribiner to attach to anything. I carry it in my front pocket.

Netflix?

Apple iPhone - Netflix?

I understand the iphone is coming to Verizon.

I have been told that I will be able to download Netflix movies from this phone if I get one. Does anyone know for sure? That would be the main reason that I would be getting the phone as I don't really know that much about it. (That's why I joined the group! *S*) And, yes, I do have the Netflix account.

iPhone Movies
Apple iPhone Movies
Yes with the iPhone 4 you can stream Netflix movies to it. I have it and it's great.

-----
Speaking of Netflix, is there a good iPhone app to manage your Netflix queues?

I've been using Phone Flix, but it's not very reliable.

-----
I recently switched from 'Phone Flix' to 'iQueue Free'. Been working good for me.

-----
Thanks! iQueue Free seems to work well.

-----
Yes. The Netflix app.

-----
Okay, I'm obviously a little dense. How do you view your DVD Queue on the Netflix app?

-----
Sorry. Didn't think about that. I don't have a DVD queue. I have a stream only account. Sorry :)

You can't. You can manage your DVD/Bluray queue and your instant streaming queue but you can only stream a movie if it is available in streaming format.

-----
Try i.TV app.

-----
Thanks so much for all the answers and advise from all of you that sent something in. I really want to get this phone. What I have now got to decide is do I wait until May when I can just re-do my plan or do I add another line and go ahead and get it when it comes out!!!! I know that I should wait, but not sure I can! lol

I had such a bad experience with my last phone. I made a mistake and bought it at the State Fair when they were in town. I told him that all I wanted it to do was stream Netflix. Not knowing anything about that type "stuff", I just got the phone he told me would do it. It's a great phone, it just won't do the one thing that I ask him that it would be able to do. The phone is a LG Ally. I just put it back in the box and started using my old phone. They said they would take it back, just call this guy and he would send me a box and I could sent it back. But, he never would call me back. rofl

Anyway, don't suppose any of you out there would happen to know anything about that phone. I don't think there is an app or whatever it would take to stream Netflix for the LG Ally phone?

Thanks again to all of you. I will hope there will be lots of post on different things, so that I can learn a little about the iPhone before I get it. (Can't wait!)

-----
If your contract is up in May, I would wait one additional month. Apple has offered a new iPhone each June. Yes it's hard to wait and life is short. Up to you,

-----
Don't forget Verizon if offering unlimited data for $30 for a limited time only...

-----
I have the 3GS and I stream movies to it as well. It works pretty good !! Which is why I keep unlimited.

-----
I use my iPhone 3Gs to watch Netflix movies in streaming. We assume that Verizon will have the same capability, but they you know that assume is a mighty big word.

No, you can not download the movie to the iPhone, you stream it, so I don't think you will be able to download it __from__ the iPhone to anything else. That is not even available to your computer. It is DVD through the mail, or stream it to your device.

App, maps nearby contacts

Apple iPhone - app that maps your nearby contacts

Is there any app that will map my nearby contacts?

To elaborate on what I mean: I open an app on the iPhone, it locates me, then looks at my contacts and shows my location on a map and shows those of my contacts that are near my current location on the map.

iPhone Apps
Apple iPhone Apps
Google latitude works well to see where your friends are. They also have to have Latitude and give you permission to see their location.

-----
I mean it is the addresses in the iPhone Contacts app that I would like to see on a map nearby my current location. Stores, restaurants, people, companies, whatever.

-----
That would be great but personal contacts don't stay in the same location like businesses do.

-----
There used to be one for Android. Should be out for Iphone any day. The logic it uses is GPS co-ordinates of online users are uoloaded in any case as cell address by mobile service operators. If your contact list has mobile numbers then they can be checked if they are in the same or adjoing cells, provided the cell copanies share that info. For same cell company it is very easy.

iPhone Calendar application, repeat by variable day

Apple iPhone - iPhone Calendar application that allows event repeat by variable day

I am looking for an calendar application that I can have a repeatable event in a preset number of days. Example "lunch every 8 days". Does anyone know of such an application? Also entering the event in plain language would be great. Example "Hair Cut Feb 19, 2011 at 10:00 AM".

iPhone Calendar
Apple iPhone Calendar
Check out pocket informant. There are others but that is the one I use.

-----
So you are saying I can have a repeat event every 10 days or even 3 days?

-----
I use Pocket Informant and the answer is yes. You can adjust the flexibility of repeating events to as many days, weeks, years you want or need.

-----
I also use Pocket Informant and find it very good. Don't know of any Calendar app that would allow plan language entry.

-----
I use Saisuke with Google calendar. Saisuke and Google Calendar both let you do the custom repeats. They are very flexible with scheduling. It's a bit pricey for an app at $9.99 but in my opinion VERY worth it if you depend on a custom calendar.

They also have a lite version to try before you buy:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/saisuke-free-google-calendar/id294196179?mt=8

-----
Thanks for the tip, I tried the free, and jumped to the paid version within minutes. Great app. I did get a little screwed up with double listings. But turned the iPhone calendar off in the App settings. So far this is fantastic. I also use an app called QuickCal which allows me to enter plain text such as Hair Cut tomorrow at 4:00 PM. And it will end up in the Saisuke app.

Otterbox defender

Apple iPhone - Otterbox defender

Well, headed to Florida for three weeks on vacation so I guess its time for the Otterbox defender. It's going to be really hard giving up the Mophie juice plus but I think I'll get better protection on the beach with the defender.

Can anyone tell me if the defender works well against the sand getting to all the areas of the iPhone 4?

iPhone Otterbox
Apple iPhone Otterbox defender
I used the Defender at the beach too. It worked out well.

-----
I live in Florida and to answer your question yes it works well against sand etc...

-----
Great. I used to use my Otterbox all the time then I got the Mophie juice plus and haven't used it since.

Scramble CE - very slow

Apple iPhone - Scramble CE - very slow

Any one use Scramble CE by Zynga? When I select Challenge and go to the page that lists previous and pending games, my iPhone4 starts the white spinning wheel and then is busy for upwards of a minute. This happens virtually all the time with my and my wife's phones. It didn't use to be that way. We do have a lot of 'old' games listed and we're thinking this is a problem with the Zynga server. We don't know how to delete this unneeded history, if that is the cause.

We have deleted the Scramble game from iTunes and our iPhones, then redownloaded it and reinstalled it.

No difference.

I posted a question at the Zynga user forum but it's not very active and no one responded.

We like the game but this 1 min. wait is a real turn-off.

iPhone Game
Apple iPhone Game Scramble
I dont know the game, but on words with friends you just swipe on the name of the finished game and you can delete. Just like deleting email.

-----
I use it and just tried mine and it worked fine so maybe it is the long history of old games. I use a 3GS on iOS 4.1 so maybe it's an iPhone 4 specific issue?

-----
I've had problems w/Scrabble the past couple of days too so I'm guessing it's a Scrabble issue.

SMS City billing alert

Apple iPhone - SMS City billing alert

I recently noticed that my AT&T wireless bill showed a monthly charge of $21.19 (including tax). I didn't remember subscribing to any thing like this. In response, AT&T said it was a third party charge, they looked into it and then offered to cancel the billing and refund both months that I had been charged. AT&T was really responsive on this. Just wanted to remind you all to carefully review your account statements.

iPhone ATT
Apple iPhone ATT
Also on occasion I find AT&T adding features on me that I didn't ask for. So I have to call to cancel them for a refund.

-----
Hrm, the only time this ever happened was when I put a SIM card from a non-iPhone line into an iPhone for an afternoon (when I was waiting on my 4 and my 3GS had been switched I used another line on our account's SIM until it was delivered) and they added a data plan so I had to call have it removed and give them the IMEI, S/N, etc from the 'plain' phone on that line....

-----
Yes, I found the same thing on mine and have no idea where it came from but they refunded it kindly enough.

-----
Who was the third party, and why were they able to add a re-occuring charge to your bill? AT&T should be able to identify it for you.
