T-Mobile 'll boost iPhone service..

Apple iPhone ATTApple iPhone

AT&T CEO says T-Mobile deal will boost iPhone service, chances for world peace via 9 to 5 Mac

-----

Has anyone determined when we can call T-Mobile cells for free?

-----

Honestly, never - there will not be any such thing as a "T-Mobile Cell on AT&T" as AT&T is going to be using T-Mobile's spectrum (900MHz) for "4G"/LTE and all current T-Mobile subscribers will have to get new phones that use the AT&T spectrum (3G network - 850/1900MHz: M4, T4) so I would venture to guess that when the user gets a new phone (approximately 1 year according to press releases) , you can then call them for free. In reality they will likely roll the numbers into the database around the half way mark (5-6 months out).

-----

Not quite what you meant, but If you have unlimited messaging already, you can add unlimited mobile calls (received/sent) for no additional charge.

Email over Wifi Not Working

Apple iPhone emailApple iPhone email

Email over Wifi Not Working

I have a wifi nework set up at home that works just fine....almost. I have 2 laptops and a wireless printer. The only issue I am having is that my 3gs iPhone will not send email over the wifi connection. I can receive email, send to the wireless printer, just can't send an outgoing email. The message I receive is "Can't connect to the smtp.mail server". My ISP is Roadrunner and like I said, if I turn wifi off on the phone ...out the email goes. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

-----

If your email is working fine using your computer and wifi, then you might check what smtp.mail server settings on your computer and try that setting in the account on your iphone for the outgoing mail server.

On a Mac computer, you can find the outgoing mail server setting under Mail >Preferences >Accounts> selected email account name on right> Account Information> Outgoing Mail Server in the pop down.

Not sure where to find that outgoing mail server info on a PC.

It may also be possible that your ISP provider might be able to tell you what ports, settings and out going server you should use on your iPhone.

Skype??

Apple iPhone - Skype

Tell me about using Skype? Good thing or not? 12 year old grandson has iPod Touch and we want him to be able to call us and parents in emergency. Is this what he needs?

iPhone Call
Apple iPhone Call

Excellent on the iPhone as well as desktop/laptop, Sue. We've used it for years with Macs and PCs, now iPhone. My son was stationed in northern Japan for a couple of years and we used it a lot to stay in touch, both phone and video. My wife's family is in another country and again, couldn't be smoother.

It has one big advantage for video conferences, unlike Facetime which, so far, requires WiFi, it works on 3G systems as well as WiFi. Video is smooth. Phone calls are clear. No cost between Skype users.

-----

Used it for years also, GREAT. Works well on iPhone or PC.

-----

I am thinking that it would use a lot of the 5 GB usage that some people are limited to, am I correct?

Skype to Skype calls (using your email log in username) to anyone's email log in username, anywhere in the world is free. You can use Skype on your iPad, iPod Touch, iPhone or personal computer (with microphone attached).

However, you must have wifi connection to make this type of call. If your grandson is connected to wifi with his iPod Touch he can use Skype to call in emergency. If however, he is out and about and not connected to wifi he would not be able to use Skype.

The Skype user he is trying to call must also be online when he tries to call them.

As long as he is connecting to the other user using their email or Skype username ID and NOT their phone number it will be FREE.

Sending photos

Apple iPhone - Sending photos

I've been on the group for awhile but am not yet an iPhone owner. I'm more than a little intimidated by a phone much smarter than I am. J I'm probably going to break down and get one in the next few months. . . I'm thinking about waiting to see if 5 launches in June with the aluminum back. Anyway, I've never had a phone that also surfs the web so I'm a bit uncertain about the data package. Never having had it, I don't know how much I'll use it. One thing I know I will do, though, is send photos. However, when I look at the options "Sending photo" is in with Texting. I don't text, so I hadn't planned to do that. I thought I could send the photo through my email, but is that complicated? Is that why people send photos through text?

This area is a Verizon stronghold, and I currently have Verizon, but I was given a gift card to AT&T so that's where I was going. And it's part of my hesitation. The first two times I've been, ATT has been swamped with people because there's only one tiny ATT store with a very limited amount of merchandise. Last time I went, there wasn't anyone else waiting and the clerk was very helpful. . . except for the iPhone, which she disparaged. I was told, oh, it's a fine phone but the Android is just awesome, and this Blackberry is even better and there are all these free apps for Android and there aren't many free apps for iPhone and if I drop it I'll have to put it on homeowner's insurance because they won't insure the iPhone, etc. etc. When she asked where I would be using it, I told her about a remote section where reception is spotty and she immediately said a Verizon customer was in switching to ATT because he
couldn't get reception and that ATT would do better there. I happen to know that ATT has bought towers there from AllTel but the systems aren't compatible and even on the ATT online map there is NO coverage from ATT in that area, at least not at the moment. They're going to have to do a lot of conversion for few customers, so I really don't see them in a hurry.

It crossed my mind that she might get a larger commission from selling the other phone models.

Needless to say, I was not going to ask any specific iPhone questions of her. When it comes time to get the iPhone I'll be going to the next town over... or just forget ATT & go with the Verizon iPhone, gift card or no.

iPhone AT&T
Apple iPhone ATT

I have the 3GS & will probably upgrade when the 5 comes out. The photo album has an email option when you have a photo on screen, so I email photos from there. Was this changed in later versions?

-----

> Anyway, I've never had a phone that also surfs the web so I'm a bit uncertain about the data package. Never having had it, I don't know how much I'll use it.

Start by signing up for the minimal package (you can NOT get an iPhone in the US without a data package). The carrier will tell you if you use more than your allotment. If that happens, THEN move up to the larger data package.

> One thing I know I will do, though, is send photos. However, when I look at the options "Sending photo" is in with Texting. I don't text, so I hadn't planned to do that. I thought I could send the photo through my email, but is that complicated?

1. It is extremely easy to send images via email, once you have the email account(s) set up.

2. I'm 66, I don't do Twitter or Facebook, and I though I didn't need texting. But after a while with the iPhone, I find texting is useful for some occasions, including sometimes sending images to friends.

For one thing, I (and I suspect many others) have the phone set to chime when text messages come in, but NOT when emails do. If I want someone to see the image eventually, when they get caught up on their email, no hurry, then i email it. If there is some reason to see it in more of a hurry, I message it.

The sales droid was doing what sales droids do: lying to the customer to sell the product they want to sell, rather than the product the customer want to buy.

There are presently over 350,000 iPhone Apps, many, many, many free.

> It crossed my mind that she might get a larger commission from selling the other phone models.

You got it!

I would Absolutely Positively NOT buy a product from that sales person, or anyone who actively lies to me.

That said, now that there is an iPhone choice between AT&T and Verizon, I would choose on the basis of coverage.

I put off buying the iPhone for 18 months in large part because I knew AT&T (the sole carrier at the time) had poor coverage in my area. When I re-checked at that time, I discovered they had been doing a great job putting up more and more towers, and my area was now covered well.

Many of the cases are interchangeable between Verizon and AT&T; also other accessories. Get the Verizon iPhone (for the coverage), and go back to the AT&T store to get accessories and cases using your gift card, making sure of course that they work on your phone before you leave.

-----

Yeah. Carriers *never* mind if you upgrade to something more expensive! They make it very easy. Downgrading can be another matter.

BTW, ATT has a lower-cost voice plan for the over-65 crowd. (VZ may too, I don't know.) If you don't use a lot of minutes & don't need rollover, you might ask about it. You can always upgrade to a "regular" plan -- even
mid-month if you find that you are using a lot of voice-minutes & expect to continue that pattern.

And you don't have to buy the phone in the phone store, you can order it from Apple & have it delivered. However, as a new (not previously) ATT customer I had to pick mine up at the ATT store for some reason -- but the *nice* clerk there was very helpful in getting it activated, # ported, & so on. Best Buy is also carrying it, I think.

I had to go to ATT because the Apple store didn't know anything about the Senior Plan -- something else you may need to consider or check out if you want that too.

-----

Are you sure they will notify you if you are approaching your data quota. I know they will let you know on your bill if you go over. I have never heard they will notify you before, although someone is trying to push through legislation to mandate that.

Unless you watch a lot of movies on the iPhone, or listen to Pandora everyday on the iPhone, you should not go over the minimum data plan.

I would be more concerned with cell coverage in the areas that you normally use the phone. How is the coverage right now, not what is planned for the future. If AT&T says they will be improving it in the very near future, then hold your purchase off until after that date. It does not matter how good the phone is if there is no service where you want to use it.

I would avoid that salesperson. She is selling you what is best for her, not you. They make a small commission on the iPhone. I know two AT&T store managers.

The reason you may have had to go into a store to purchase it is that they sometimes want to check ID and do a credit check if you have never been a customer.

-----

I thought I had read that somewhere authoritative, but I am blessed by being "grandfathered" in to unlimited....

My wife has never gone over 200 MB; I usually do, but I've never gone over 1 GB; our housemate often streams radio as background noise at work, and often sits around 1.9 GB in a month.

-----

They send me a text when I hit 65% usage and then another at 90%.

-----

That is good to know, for those not on unlimited.

Video slowdown

Apple iPhone - Video slowdown

I have a 3GS iPhone. Lately video download has slowed way down or simply stops at random. For example, You Tube is now just about useless. Any ideas what might be causing the problem?

I am still using OS 4.1 because my MacMini is still running 10.4.11. (I plan to upgrade to 10.6 soon.)

I haven't made any changes to the phone or my wifi hookup. I can't imagine what's wrong.

iPhone VideoApple iPhone video

When the video on my 4 is super slow sometimes I turn off my 3G and use Edge.

-----

I would say it is the network not the iPhone.

-----

It seems to happen no matter what I use: wifi, 3G. My macmini is connected to the same network and shows no speed variation.

Another person suggested I restore the phone then use backup to return content. Never did that before so it scares me a bit. Would I connect to iTunes, backup as usual then hit restore? After that I'm not sure how to get the backup content on the phone again. I know this must be really basic. But if someone could point me in the direction of where I'd find the exact procedure I'd be very grateful.

-----

A quick Google search found this Apple support file: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414

-----

Check out this video on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imMZKvl8BTQ&feature=youtube_gdata_player

-----

I had made these assumptions about your post when I made my reply.

1- You are streaming a video, rather than downloading it to your iPhone.

2- I assumed you were using either Edge or 3G, but WiFi it would not matter.

Either way, I think problem is with the network or the server that you are getting the video from, and not the iPhone. Speeds vary by time of day, day of the week and time of the year.

If it is a popular YouTube video, their server could be overloaded.

If it is all videos all the time, then I would do the a restore.

Moving to new computer

Apple iPhone - Moving to new computer

I've looked over a lot of old messages but I'm still kinda confused.

What exactly do I need to do?
Moving from Win XP to Win7.

I have music, audiobooks, podcasts, pictures, videos & TV shows (both purchased from iTunes store & ripped from DVD), lots of apps, contacts & calendar in Outlook, & probably something else I can't think of right now.

Not everything is in the "iTunes folder" -- a number of the ripped-videos aren't & the Outlook stuff isn't, and the pictures are in the My Pictures folder.

Aside from moving all the files & folders -- and which ones do I need to be sure are moved, other than the obvious ones that I know have content I want to keep -- where do I put them on the new pc & how do I get them "into" iTunes?

What I really need is a step-by-step instruction set.

iPhone iTunes
Apple iPhone iTunes
Windows 7 has a utility that will move ALL of " your" files from the old computer. I forget the name but a checking will tell you what it is.

I used it to update from a Win XP machine to a Win 7 machine it worked perfectly.

Make things easy for yourself. Check the windows help system and Microsoft.com.

-----
I started trying the Easy Transfer system. I was going to use the xfer using an external HD. When it said it'd be >10 hours (& it may not have stopped adding to the time est) I shut it down. I'll get a direct transfer cable & try again -- maybe it'll only take "overnite" not "all week". :-)

-----
Even that much time is much less than you'll spend trying to do all that on your own.

-----
If I did it myself (if I knew what to move & where to put it) I wouldn't have to do it all at once; I could do it in between actually using the computer(s). e.g. I could move all of iTunes in one session, all of Office in another, Mail in yet another...and so on.

-----
I assume that using the external HD means you have a full backup. Do you take regular backups anyway?

-----
Data backups, yes. But I don't know all the places that various settings, add-ons & stuff get stashed for various programs.

at&t to acquire T-Mobile

Apple iPhone - at&t to acquire T-Mobile

I'm wondering if the next iPhone will be 4G then because at&t will have the network faster than otherwise.

iPhone AT&T
Apple iPhone ATT
Doubt it, probably iPhone 6/ 2013. The "deal" will not be completed for a year per reports and press releases and the next iPhone will be out in ~3 months it is likely already in prototype and final development phase.

-----
iPhone 6 should be due out in 2012 if we expect iPhone 5 this year 2011.

-----
NO, because there are no networks in existence that meet the ITU's 4G standard, no matter what the advertising departments say.

-----
And even then, is the T-Mobile LTE network big enough and robust enough to handle the traffic? Since Deutsche Telekom and been bleeding cash since buying T-Mobile, I would tend to think the LTE network is probably a bit lite to handle the load. I can not see DT sinking much more money into it over the next year, and who is to say that AT&T intends to roll T-Mobile into AT&T. They could decide to run it as a separate brand. Remember how many times they have changed their own name over the last 7 years. AT&T (orange), Cingular, then AT&T (blue).

iPhone 4 GPS in another country

Apple iPhone - iPhone 4 GPS in another country

I am planning a trip to Europe and plan on not using the iPhone for communications, but just for GPS. There is an app for GeoTagging photos. but it needs the GPS. Will I get charged for data at the extra high rates?

iPhone GPS
Apple iPhone GPS
GPS doesn't use your data connection - just make sure you turn "Cellular Data" off in the Settings > Network

-----
If you turn "Cellular Data" OFF in Settings - General, you should still be able to use the GPS, although applications that download maps could not.

If you are concerned about preventing voice usage as well, it might be easier to just remove the SIM card (if you're AT&T, but not if you're Verizon).

-----
OK thank you both, I will turn off data. is there a way to turn off the cell part without removing the SIM card?

-----
In general, yes; for you, no.

Turning Airplane Mode ON turns off the cellular radio completely, but it also turns off GPS....

-----
Turn off cell data so you don´t pay charges, WI-FI still works for download map data, surfing, skype....

-----
WiFi may be good for downloading the maps while in town, but in between where there is no WiFi, you will only see a grey grid with a pin stuck into it. Most of the GPS app do not download the maps to the phone, but rely on a cellular Data/WiFi connection. There is one app that does download the maps to the phone, but I do not remember the name.

-----
MotionX GPS Drive can pre-load maps to memory.

-----
Not to be a contrarian, but when I took my AT&T iPhone 4 to Rome and Egypt last fall, I simply turned off Data Roaming (as instructed by AT&T). This prevents any web browsing, email, or apps' access to the Internet.

However, I left the Cellular Data switched on so I could still send & receive texts. I had paid AT&T $10 in advance for up to 50 texts ("Global Messaging 50"), leaving me some communication ability without extra-high voice charges. Each message over 50 costs $0.40, but I personally used only about 25 texts in the 2 weeks I was away.

I also spent $25 for 20 MB Data Global Add-on so I could briefly switch Data Roaming on and check email or load a map or two while away from WiFi. AT&T promised to refund the cost if I didn't use it. But even in the hotels, WiFi in Egypt proved to be spotty, and I ended up glad I had a lower cost backup plan. To monitor your use, reset your usage statistics in the "Settings" app while in the plane on your way to Europe.

And by the way, using the Skype app when WiFi was available allowed local or global voice communication for pennies.

Switching from Android to iPhone

Apple iPhone - Switching from Android to iPhone

Next week I am going to switch from Android to iPhone with Verizon wireless. I have had a Droid X and now have a Samsung Fascinate Galaxy.

Will I be able to save any of the Android os data to my iPhone? Is there a way to transfer from Android to PC to iPhone?

For example I am presently using RoboForm on my android and my PC. Will that info sync on the iPhone? What will I need to do to sync my iPhone with my Google Calendar?

iPhone
Apple iPhone
Sync or copy all your Android data to your computer.

iPhones sync using iTunes so you just need to set the sync prefs there. If you are not already using iTunes, it would be good to download and install it so you can get used to it *before* the iPhone arrives.

You can sync the iPhone with Google Cal. I don't do that but others here do. I'm sure they can advise.

-----
My iPhone syncs contacts, notes and I believe the calendar also with MS Outlook 2003...if the android can do, it should be it.

-----
Android natively syncs to Google and the iPhone can to, though it prefers to sync via iTunes to Outlook. For anything else, check the App Store within iTunes for applications that sync the data you want.

Roboform is in there.

iPod on iPhone starting automatically

Apple iPhone - iPod on iPhone starting automatically

I have an iPhone 4, My Ford has Synch and whenever I'm in my car the iPod automatically connects via the blue tooth. It's not audible unless I change the radio to media, but it runs the battery on my phone down. I have looked all over the settings for the iPod and iPhone and just can't see how to turn it off so it doesn't start playing automatically.

-----
If I turn off the bluetooth I can't make or receive phone calls can I? I can try it and report back - LOL

-----
Do you have the USB port in your Ford? I got a 2011 Mariner with sync & copied my music files onto the flash drive. I can voice command the music, no battery drain on my cell, & since my iPhone is also synched, the music turns off when the phone rings thru the sound system.

I do have a USB port. Will do that

Upgrade... my old iPhone?

Apple iPhone - If I upgrade... what do I do with my old iPhone?

I think I'm going to quit fighting it and upgrade to the iPhone 4 this week. I can't take this constant fight against a battery that goes out at 80%, plus I believe I "injured" the vibration mechanism in the phone - it doesn't happen anymore.

So... what do I do with my iPhone 3GS? I know people sell them, but what would I need to do first? Could I use it as just an MP3 player? Will it keep the 3G/Wireless like an iPod Touch, so I could use it for everything but the phone?

iPhone 4
Apple iPhone 4
Yes it works just like an iPod Touch but at this point we are ~90 days out from the iPhone 5 you might want to hold out...

-----
Is the iPhone 5 confirmed?

I'm even wondering about ditching the iPhone and going old-school, and getting an iPad instead.

Tones and Ringtones on iPhone 4

Apple iPhone - Answer Tones and Ringtones on iPhone 4

I have had answer tones and ringtones on all my previous cellphones. I got them
through the AT@T site. This is my first iPhone and I am surprised that I can not
send answer tones or ringtones to my iPhone from AT@T. Is there a different way
to do this? Any apps maybe? Thank you in advance.

iPhone Ringtone
Apple iPhone
You can make them in iTunes (or GarageBand or any number of other programs) or you buy them in the iTunes store.

-----
Audiko.net
Search theirs or make your own. Make sure you pick the iPhone download. Save to your computer & then import into iTunes.

-----
Sorry I should have probably given a better explanation. Here is what I should gave said: audiko.net is the website for free ringtones for iPhone. if you want to search what they have enter in the box next to the ?Google search button then click that button to run the search of audiko's website. click on the one you want when the list pops up and you can sample it if you want. then look down to where it says get iPhone ringtone & it will convert it for you. then when the page changes you will have to click the download link under the song title. choose the save option when the dialogue box pops up (i created a folder just for ringtones). then when you open iTunes click file and the then add file to library and then next time you sync your phone it will be there :)

-----
I will try Audiko.net. I loved it when you were able to send the ringtones and answer tones directly to my phone. But Audiko.net seems to do be the next best thing.

DropBox

Apple iPhone TutorialApple iPhone

DropBox

Does anyone have experience with DropBox on their iPhone/PC? Files saved to the 'Box' file are automatically sync between Pc and iPhone. Thoughts?

-----

I use DropBox between my iPhone, iPad, work PC, and home PCs. Works pretty well for me.

-----

I use dropbox...iPhone....mac desktops and laptop...no probs.....Yes...it synchs perfectly fine....

-----

Use it every day and I am very happy with it. Works very well.

-----

Ditto, I'm using it on my iPhone, a WIndows laptop, and a Ubuntu desktop and I find it to be a brilliant solution for syncing files.

-----

The idea sounds good but:

- you need a fast internet connection all the time

- works with smaller files otherwise it would take forever to transfer

- You have to pay if you start using a little bit more

- worst of all, what would happen if dropbox closes?

Remember, like the real thing, clouds are here now and in the next minute they are not. and that applies to all online services that keep your data and info.

-----

Of course, you keep copies of the original files. Tried it with 100+ MB files and did not have any problem.

-----

"The Cloud" is not evanescent vapor. The Cloud is thousands of tons of hardware — server farms scattered around the countryside.

-----

Jim, those are good points. However, Dropbox also stores the files on your computer. If you open up Dropbox on your computer without a network, you'll see your file. Granted, it won't be the latest if you've changed it recently elsewhere.

What are some other viable solutions? I've done the email transfer thing but definitely prefer this way. TL

-----

There's Apple's iDisk, but oddly enough it isn't as well integrated as is DropBox.

-----

I have lots of experience with dropbox on the iPhone, just not PC related. I'm a Mac head. Dropbox is great. I use it all the time. It syncs with bot my iMac and MBP and all my iDevices. I consider dropbox the best cloud app out. I've tried a few other cloud apps that are similar to dropbox but they were limited either by allowing 1 file upload at a time or the free amount of space was lower than dropbox or the monthly pricing was more. Dropbox all the way :-)

iOS 4.3 and Battery Life

Apple iPhone - iOS 4.3 and Battery Life

I updated my iPhone 4 to iOS 4.3 this morning before leaving for work. Update went very smoothly with no issues.

Granted it's only been about nine hours of usage so far but my battery seems to be draining much faster than normal. I haven't turned on any battery draining apps or changed any settings that I know of. Is anyone else on iOS 4.3 seeing this or am I just imagining this?

iPhone iOS
Apple iPhone iOS
I have been running it since beta 1 and haven't noticed anything. You may want to backup do it as a restore instead of an upgrade then restore your backup and resync.

-----
Why do you recommend a backup first, will data be lost if not backedup?

-----
Yeah - when you upgrade it installs on top of whats there whereas a restore reformats the system and the backup tells it what to put back on and where.

-----
Odd, I've been thinking the battery drain is less on my iPhone 4.

iPhone 4 battery life

Apple iPhone - iPhone 4 battery life

I have with me an iPhone 4 locked on AT&T. Since I´m overseas and its baseband does not have an unlock yet, it is just sitting here waiting.

It still have the AT&T SIM inside, the wifi is on (but should go off once it goes on standby), it is jailbroken, with very little software installed beyond those that come with it.

Well I decided to test its battery longevity on a single charge, standby only (no messing with it).

I charged it up to 100% full on last friday, march 4th at 11:00PM, unplugged it and let it sit on my desk with an occasional peek to check the battery level once or twice a day.

Well for my surprise, today 9:30PM, wednesday, march 9th (almost 5 full days) the battery still holds 17% capacity left! (I will let you know when it drains totally)

The curious thing is, for my knowledge, the iPhone should be seeking for AT&T signals, which of course, there is none where I´m, and for sure wasting even more battery.

So the iPhone is not that bad regarding battery life, if you just leave it alone. Maybe with a few calls a day may drain the battery little faster, but nothing that could make it worst than others cell phones.

What do you think?

iPhone ATT

I think that I am not surprised at your results in the least.

If you plan to use only wifi then switch on the airplane mode and save battery.

I open iTunes.

I connect my Verizon iPhone 4.

I click "check for update."

I get: "This version of the iPhone software (4.2.6) is the current version."

Yet, I'm reading messages on the list about an update to 4.3.

Is there another way to get the OS update?

What's really strange is my iPad (64GB, 3G and WiFi) did do an update to 4.3

-----
The update is not for Verizon.

-----
I also have something strange going on with this.

I have an 1Phone 4 with GSM and installed the new update yesterday, but am seeing none of the updated features.

Big example is that I have a new Apple TV . I downloaded the software update for it last night, but I am not seeing the TV airplay icon in Camera Roll. It's just like it was before the update, i.e. Apple TV plays the audio of a video in Camera Roll but not the Video.

There is no evidence as far as I can see that there are any changes.

Anybody else having this problem ?

-----
The OS update is only for GSM (AT&T in the US) phones.

Retrieving Deleted E-mails

Apple iPhone - Retrieving Deleted E-mails

I was wondering if there is anyway we can retrieve deleted emails or text?

iPhone Email
Apple iPhone email
If you havent emptied your Trash on your iphone, you can find the deleted email there and move it out to your inbox.

-----
They may be still in trash folder unless you have cleared or emptied the trash folder since deleting the mail from inbox or any other folder.

-----
And on the iPhone, where are you seeing the Trash or a Trash Folder?

If the email is still on the server, you might be able to re-download it, but I don't think you can do that with text messages.

I'm waiting with baited breath to see what Mark can pull out of his sleeve. (Not saying he is wrong, just that I don't know how he plans on doing it.)

-----
Trash folders can be found by going to Mailboxes and scrolling down to Accounts, selecting the mail account (i.e. Yahoo, Gmail, ...) where the messages were deleted from and then select the account and the Trash folder.

-----
In the list of mailboxes?

-----
On top left corner, touch arrow shape titled "mailboxes".
You will go to screen with list of boxes.
Trash will be third or fourth from top.

-----
on your Mac, yes, but on the iPhone, in Mail.app, you have a Trash Folder? Funny I don't.

I'm assuming that since Felicia sent the post to the group from an iPhone to the apple-iphone list, that she was talking about how to recover deleted emails on the iPhone. I hope even a newbie knows how to retrieve a deleted email from the Trash Folder on the Mac.

So now, where is this Trash Folder again, specifically on the iPhone Mail.app?

-----
I have trash folder on Iphone 4 since the very beginning. It was as per original set up. I do not know if it varies with model or OS?

-----
I tap Mail on my iPhone.

-----
Are you sure you're not using Gmail.app?

I tap on the Mail icon for Apple's Mail.app and I get a window titled Mailboxes. Below that I have two sections, one titled Inboxes and the other Accounts. Both list all my different email accounts.

I have looked in Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars and I see no setting that changes what I see on the first window of Mail.

OK, now I see the Trash Folders, if I use the Accounts and then look in say my "public" email account. There is the Trash. I never use the accounts, I always use the inboxes, and I almost never delete email.

-----
Tap on one of the lines in the account section of the list and you will see the folders.

-----
You are almost there. When you at the accounts section tap the provider of the email that you are

-----
Yeah, I finally found it, but it is different from the screen shot you sent me off-list. But you and the others are correct, there is a Trash Folder, just not on the top level, but back one window.

-----
You are almost there. When you are in the section for accounts tap on the icon for the email you want trash from. It opens to a page with trash fourth down. That's the place.

iHome Radio and iPhone 3GS

Apple iPhone - iHome Radio and iPhone 3GS - No Love No Mo'

I have an iHome radio http://www.ihomeaudio.com/iP90BZ/
http://www.ihomeaudio.com/iP90BZ/ ) I use at work. I keep my iPhone plugged in all day, and listen to music or podcasts.

I'm not sure what exactly happened, but I did a system restore a couple weeks ago. I also recently upgraded to iTunes 10.x (whatever the latest version is), and somehow the radio and the iPhone are not loving each other. If I had my phone on vibrate, I could plug it on the radio, and get the double-buzz indicating it was set and locked. I could listen to my tunes, and no trouble.

Now, it doesn't seem to recognize it at all. The only way I know there is a connection is the battery indicator has the lightning bolt on it, and if the battery is down, I can see it charge up.

iPhone Radio
Apple iPhone RAdio
Two things, the double buss is not "set and lock" but "thank you for plugging me in to charge". Listen to it, it is saying "Thank you."

The other is have you inspected the 30-pin connector on the phone for pocket lint or something else blocking a few of the pins? This is starting to come up on other lists.

-----
Sorry for my word choice... but I knew the iPhone was connected by the vibration.

As for lint - I was just at an Apple store a few weeks back, and they checked the slot at the bottom and the headphone jack for lint. All was good. I used some canned air today just to see if anything was in the charging slot, then plugged the phone into the iHome radio. No vibration or anything - just the lightning bolt.

-----
Try the other end of the phone... sounds like something is making the phone think its in earphone mode. See if there's something in the earphone jack receptacle.

-----
Sound plays fine when not plugged in... and I've had headphones plugged in that work properly. So, I don't believe it's either suggestion.

I'm starting to think the phone is on its last legs. I'm not sure if I want to keep the iPhone (go for iPhone 4) or get a Droid on Verizon. Hearing lots of compelling arguments on both sides.

-----
No worries about the choice of words, some times I am just stubborn and others dense.

So the connector and the jack are not plugged, and you get sound when off the iHome, so the jack is not broken.

This is a basic, but sometimes we forget to check. Is the iHome volume turned up or on mute? Is it set to use the iPhone as the source? When I plug-in the 30-pin connector in my truck, the volume knob on the radio takes control of my 3GS's iPod.app.

I'm hoping it is something silly, rather than expensive.

-----
To get trashed emails back:1 tap arrow upper left Mailboxes 2 pull inboxes up past all inboxes to reveal Accounts with colored icons for email providers(gmail, hotmail, aol etc). Tap on icon for mail you want back. 4 the fourth line down is trash. 5 tap and trashed emails are listed. That's the place.

-----
That's great for Mail.app on a Mac, but not on a iPhone. There are no arrows and no Trash Folder.

BTW the subject line was "iHome Radio and iPhone 3GS ".

-----
I've been wondering about that. Over the last 2-3 days I've been getting a few replies obviously in the wrong threads. As this is most unusual (although people trying to start new threads just by changing the subject line is not), I wondered if Gmail was mixing up my "conversations". It appears not, so is it a problem with using the mail app on the iPhone?

-----
It's there. I can't think of any other word to describe the thing at the top left screen except it says mailbox. I'm sorry to have put my answer under the wrong topic. I just wanted to help you but I'm guess I unable explain it.

-----
Always try a reboot. Funny things happen.

iOS 4.3, Personal Hotspot, iPhone 3GS

Apple iPhone - iOS 4.3, Personal Hotspot and iPhone 3GS

OK, everything I've read said the Personal Hotspot was not available with the 3GS and IOS 4.3. However when I go to settings, Network it gives me the option to setup personal hotspot. When I select it it gives me the option to contact ATT by phone call, or website to set up PHSpot. So whats the deal, is if available on the 3GS or not?

iPhone ATT
Apple iPhone ATT
They specifically said in the announcement video it was for iPhone 4.

-----
Yea,that's what confusing. I has a 3GS but I seem to have the option for personal hotspot.

-----
To set up any sort of tethering even on an iPhone 4, you must contact AT&T. It involves a billing change.

-----
OK found the answer

"For iPhone 3GS users personal hotspot is there and in the same top-level position, but is limited to the old-style Bluetooth and USB."

Thinking about getting a IPAD 2 wifi only and tithering to my Iphone. Wonder how well that would work

-----
Are you talking about Wifi or non-Wifi connectivity? How would you connect the two?

-----
With Bluetooth. Heres Apples Instructions

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3574

-----
Should work. Data rate, and range, would be less than with Wifi connection, but not much.

-----
I got the update & changed over to the tethering plan & used it as a mobile hotspot with my 1st gen iPad at the dr office it worked pretty well but one time it said that the signal was weak & that the web pages may load slowly but I'm happy with it

-----
They just renamed tethering into personal hotspot.

Early Termination Fees Illegal Penalties

Apple iPhone - Early Termination Fees Illegal Penalties

The California Court of Appeal has ruled that Sprint's early termination fees represented illegal penalties.

Does anyone know if this applies to AT&T?

iPhone ATT
Apple iPhone att

1) This case is against Sprint/Nextel. No other carrier.

2) It is not a class action suit so it does not apply to anyone other than the people in this case.

3) It has not been all the way through the appeal process so we can't be sure of the final outcome.

4) If some how the courts (and or) the congress find a way to outlaw ETFs, then you could see the end on subsidised cell phones, greatly increasing the cost of phones. This is by no means all good. I'd like to see a choice but if no carrier offers discounted (IE) subsidized Phones, it could price a lot of consumers out of the market.

5) What I see is ETFs may get smaller which will get them closer to actual cost rather than a punishment.

-----

There has been a class action against Verizon. About a year ago I got $50-$75 because some court didn't like how they imposed termination fees. I have no idea what the issues were. But I do know that Verizon was one of the most punitive companies I have dealt with.

I think most carriers have termination fees that somewhat reflect their cost and reduce over time.

-----

AT&T still has early termination penalties. I would hope there could be some sort of court ruling, country-wide, to stop the practice, when, as in my case with my 3GS phones, a customer pays full retail for a phone. When there is no compensation, I don't think a provider should be entitled to capture a penalty for early contract termination.

-----

What I would like to see happen is one of the cell companies start offering to buy out contracts for people that want to switch. If one does it, the others will too and then they would realize they should just drop the practice.

-----

I can't see that happening and in reality even though they seem exorbitant the fees do go down each month (at least Verizon and AT&T do) - I would like to see them start decreasing the price of the phone each month as they decrease the ETF.

-----

Why are you on a contract if you paid full retail for the 3GS? AT&T offers month to month service for the same price if you purchase your phone without a subsidy?

-----

I purchased directly from Apple. At the time, at least, Apple required acceptance of a two-year contract from AT&T. (This was in the pre-Verizon era.)

-----

If you purchased directly from Apple, you likely got the subsidized price. The unsubsidized price is around $700 -800 depending on the memory. Is that what you paid Apple?

-----

I did not pay that much. I guess I did get a subsidized price.

-----

..even if you bought the 3GS from Apple, you paid the subsidized price. They did not offer a non-subsidized iPhone in the US, only Canada which would not have AT&T as a carrier.

-----

If you sign a contract, you are required by law to abide it. So there should of course be some kind of penalty for breaking said contract. My gripe is being forced into a contract. If a consumer prefers paying full price to avoid a contract, that really should be option.

-----

What I would like to see happen is one of the cell companies start offering to buy out contracts for people that want to switch. If one does it, the others will too and then they would realize they should just drop the practice.

-----

That's a great idea!!!!

Travel Apps for London and Paris

Apple iPhone - Recommendations for Travel Apps for London and Paris

Any recommendations for apps that would be useful for a family vacation to London and Paris. Particularly apps that don't require wireless access to work as we don't want to pay the high roaming data rates.

Kids are 9 and 6.

But even more, use iTunes to download Rick Steve's podcasts, Rick Steves' Paris Audio Tours (particularly The Louvre, the Orsay, and Versailles, plus the neighborhood guides). You'll be able to bypass the rented audio guides and enjoy a professional tour of the museums' highlights.

In London, the podcast London's Best Free Walks offers you tours around a host of neighborhoods. Rick Steves also offers London Audio Tours, but they were released after my last London vacation, so I cannot vouch for them directly.

Thanks. Had already downloaded the Rick Steve's podcasts as we had gotten his paper guide book for London.

Does any one have a idea if there is an app for radio, not like pandora as it does not work with out 3g or wifi, an app for just any local radio station?

I'm not sure what you mean. The iPhone has no FM receiver so any "radio" app can work only using 3G or Wi-Fi.

-----

I think he means similar to that of the iPod nano...

I don't think so since I don't think the iPhone has an FM receiver.

Mails accessing through computer

Apple iPhone - Mails accessing through computer

How can I access the mails that are downloded to my phone, using my
computer.

Or adding the mails downloaded in the phone to inbox to the computer
(outlook)

Question may be silly but I am not able to do it because I am new.

iPhone Email
Apple iPhone Email

The older POP mail protocol is intended for situations where the user wants to collect their mail onto a single computer. It *removes* the mail from the server when it loads it onto the computer.

What you need to use for your situation is the IMAP mail protocol. In IMAP the mail lives on the server, and is synchronized to whatever computers you set up for that purpose. In my case, I access my mail on my Macbook Pro at home, on my iPhone, and on my iPad.

If I delete a message on my iPhone, or use my Mac to move one from the inbox to a subsidiary folder, those actions are synchronized automatically to the server, and appear automatically on the other computers.

-----

Even with POP accounts, there are options as to how to handle deleted messages. Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > (select the account you want to modify) > Advanced > Delete from server. At this point, you will have three choices: Never, Seven Days, and When removed from inbox. Note that this is for POP accounts. If you have the option of using an IMAP type mailbox, that is your best bet. It keeps everything synchronized.

-----

We're getting a little off the original topic, but I find that IMAP does not sync or create duplicate mail boxes on different devices.

And as I said, I had to check which way it went, but here is what I experience on a daily basis.

I have both types of accounts on both my iPhone and Macs.

I have my POP accounts to "delete from server" after 30 days, so all my devices see those emails. My IMAP accounts only match when leave the emails unread on the iPhone. When I awaken my MacBook Pro, and Mail.app sorts the mail the the designated mailboxes, they are often no longer available on the iPhone.

Once read, email is normally removed from the IMAP servers.

-----

Nope IMAP leaves the mail on the server until you delete it, unlike POP which requires some tricks to achieve the same thing. If you're using IMAP and the mail is disappearing before you've deleted it then that's a function of your set up not IMAP.

-----

Tricks?

It's just a setting in your mail program (& it's easily changed) -- is that any "trickier" than however you do it with IMAP? Don't you have to have some kind of settings with IMAP? or does it somehow know just how *you* want to do things (vs. how *I* might want to do things)?

-----

Yes. With IMAP you are "syncing" with the email server and can do this with multiple client devices. Messages are deleted on the server when you delete them on any of your client devices, i.e. the sync works both ways.

The confusion might be caused by the fact that OS X Mail (and perhaps other clients) allows you to leave messages on a POP server for a given period before deletion (but I found when I first used Mail that if I did *not* set this to "immediate" my messages were duplicated. Was this a bug?).

Here's just one of many explanations of POP vs IMAP.

http://mail2web.com/blog/2010/02/pop-imap-difference/

-----

Thanks for the responses but i did not get an answer to my problem!! probably due to my bad explanation of the problem. i will explain the problem again.

i am sitting at hotel without an internet connection now. however i downloaded my mail to the iphone using the 3g services. now iwant to transfer that mail to my computer inbox (outlook) and prepare a reply so that i can send it as soon as i get the internet connection.

Someone could help me??

-----

I don't know of a way to "transfer" an E Mail from the iPhone to a computer. But the iPhone Email app sends Email just a well as it recieves. I reply to Emails all the time with the iPhone Email app.

I know that is not what you asked, but it is a work around.

-----

There is nothing special about the email you receive on your iPhone. It is either on an IMAP or POP account. Create the account on your computer. Just remember the differences between the IMAP and POP accounts. If you read an IMAP accounts email, it is usually removed from the server and will not appear on the other device if it has not been downloaded before reading it on the second device. You can mark it as unread to give it an opportunity to be down loaded on the other device.

POP accounts only remove email from the server by the rules you set.

-----

Are you sure you haven't got that backwards?

-----

Actually I think you have it backwards, or something, though I don't know how IMAP really works (& from what I hear it wouldn't work for me the way I deal with things right now.)

My POP3 accounts are all set to keep messages on the server; I delete or move/file them directly if I want to. Any action taken in my mail program on my computer or iDevice is *not* reflected on the server (with the exception of Mailwasher, which I use to pre-screen my email & can send a 'delete' command directly to the server.)

-----

After reading your post it seems I may have them backwards. But then again, when I googled it. I did not agree with the answer provided by UoM.

Either way the OP did not realize there was a difference and possible that he/she had to set up the account on both devices.

-----

If you are using Outlook express just config it to leave a copy on the server for as many days as you like...I do that all the time

Look for internet mail setting on either OE or MS Outlook and set the days you want to leave them on the server, this way you can receive it on the iPhone and the computer, the same emails.

Is that correct?

-----

You can't transfer without Internet connectivity. But I think you can respond on your iPhone and when you're in an area where you have connectivity, those pending e-mail will send.

-----

Yes. the reply will be kept in out box and be sent when you are connected and open mail and update. As a matter of fact, you could delete it before it is sent, if you change your mind.
