Photos in B&W *without* processing afterwards?

i.e. I'd like to view the preview in B&W, then take the photo in B&W, without the extra step of converting it after the fact - like using B&W film, but with the added advantage of being able to see the image in the preview in B&W first.

I use retro camera plus. It's free. It gives you several old style cameras that have the option to take photos in B&W.

No. The camera has a color sensor. There is no way to do it "in camera" the way you mean. Whether you convert it to B&W with on-device settings or on your desktop later, it must be converted to B&W at some point to get a B&W image.

As Tara indicated, there are camera apps that will make it appear to be what you want, but all they're doing is pre-converting it for you.

As an avid amateur photographer, my suggestion is that unless you want to upload the image online immediately when you take it, don't do the conversion in-camera. Rather wait until you get it to your desktop and can use a more powerful image editor in order to both maintain the highest possible quality and to allow you more control over the results.

I'm also a long-time amateur photographer (40 years) , and 99.99% of the time, I do just as you suggest. This is what you might call a "corner case" where I have a specific task in mind and I'm looking for a specific tool to do just that.

In short, the only things the app needs to do is:

1. show me scene in B&W.
2. capture that scene in B&W

Optionally it would be nice to have some measure of control on focus area (like the native iPhone 4 camera app), brightness, contrast, but that's all icing on the cake.

If there's an app that can do that, I'm still looking. :)

Pro shots camera can take in BW - but you have to take the picture then look at it, it doesn't turn the "viewfinder" black and white. At one time, it must have been free or had a free lite version, because I never pay for apps. If you want to buy it, it is a dollar.

I've been on the group for awhile but am not yet an iPhone owner. I'm more than a little intimidated by a phone much smarter than I am. J I'm probably going to break down and get one in the next few months. . . I'm thinking about waiting to see if 5 launches in June with the aluminum back. Anyway, I've never had a phone that also surfs the web so I'm a bit uncertain about the data package. Never having had it, I don't know how much I'll use it. One thing I know I will do, though, is send photos. However, when I look at the options "Sending photo" is in with Texting. I don't text, so I hadn't planned to do that. I thought I could send the photo through my email, but is that complicated? Is that why people send photos through text?

This area is a Verizon stronghold, and I currently have Verizon, but I was given a gift card to AT&T so that's where I was going. And it's part of my hesitation. The first two times I've been, ATT has been swamped with people because there's only one tiny ATT store with a very limited amount of merchandise. Last time I went, there wasn't anyone else waiting and the clerk was very helpful. . . except for the iPhone, which she disparaged. I was told, oh, it's a fine phone but the Android is just awesome, and this Blackberry is even better and there are all these free apps for Android and there aren't many free apps for iPhone and if I drop it I'll have to put it on homeowner's insurance because they won't insure the iPhone, etc. etc. When she asked where I would be using it, I told her about a remote section where reception is spotty and she immediately said a Verizon customer was in switching to ATT because he
couldn't get reception and that ATT would do better there. I happen to know that ATT has bought towers there from AllTel but the systems aren't compatible and even on the ATT online map there is NO coverage from ATT in that area, at least not at the moment. They're going to have to do a lot of conversion for few customers, so I really don't see them in a hurry.

It crossed my mind that she might get a larger commission from selling the other phone models.

Needless to say, I was not going to ask any specific iPhone questions of her. When it comes time to get the iPhone I'll be going to the next town over... or just forget ATT & go with the Verizon iPhone, gift card or no.

I have the 3GS & will probably upgrade when the 5 comes out. The photo album has an email option when you have a photo on screen, so I email photos from there. Was this changed in later versions?

Start by signing up for the minimal package (you can NOT get an iPhone in the US without a data package). The carrier will tell you if you use more than your allotment. If that happens, THEN move up to the larger data package.

1. It is extremely easy to send images via email, once you have the email account(s) set up.

2. I'm 66, I don't do Twitter or Facebook, and I though I didn't need texting. But after a while with the iPhone, I find texting is useful for some occasions, including sometimes sending images to friends.

For one thing, I (and I suspect many others) have the phone set to chime when text messages come in, but NOT when emails do. If I want someone to see the image eventually, when they get caught up on their email, no hurry, then i email it. If there is some reason to see it in more of a hurry, I message it.

I would Absolutely Positively NOT buy a product from that sales person, or anyone who actively lies to me.

That said, now that there is an iPhone choice between AT&T and Verizon, I would choose on the basis of coverage.

I put off buying the iPhone for 18 months in large part because I knew AT&T (the sole carrier at the time) had poor coverage in my area. When I re-checked at that time, I discovered they had been doing a great job putting up more and more towers, and my area was now covered well.

Many of the cases are interchangeable between Verizon and AT&T; also other accessories. Get the Verizon iPhone (for the coverage), and go back to the AT&T store to get accessories and cases using your gift card, making sure of course that they work on your phone before you leave.

Yeah. Carriers *never* mind if you upgrade to something more expensive! They make it very easy. Downgrading can be another matter.

BTW, ATT has a lower-cost voice plan for the over-65 crowd. (VZ may too, I don't know.) If you don't use a lot of minutes & don't need rollover, you might ask about it. You can always upgrade to a "regular" plan -- even
mid-month if you find that you are using a lot of voice-minutes & expect to continue that pattern.

And you don't have to buy the phone in the phone store, you can order it from Apple & have it delivered. However, as a new (not previously) ATT customer I had to pick mine up at the ATT store for some reason -- but the *nice* clerk there was very helpful in getting it activated, # ported, & so on. Best Buy is also carrying it, I think.

I had to go to ATT because the Apple store didn't know anything about the Senior Plan -- something else you may need to consider or check out if you want that too.

Are you sure they will notify you if you are approaching your data quota. I know they will let you know on your bill if you go over. I have never heard they will notify you before, although someone is trying to push through legislation to mandate that.

Unless you watch a lot of movies on the iPhone, or listen to Pandora everyday on the iPhone, you should not go over the minimum data plan.

I would be more concerned with cell coverage in the areas that you normally use the phone. How is the coverage right now, not what is planned for the future. If AT&T says they will be improving it in the very near future, then hold your purchase off until after that date. It does not matter how good the phone is if there is no service where you want to use it.

I would avoid that salesperson. She is selling you what is best for her, not you. They make a small commission on the iPhone. I know two AT&T store managers.

The reason you may have had to go into a store to purchase it is that they sometimes want to check ID and do a credit check if you have never been a customer.

Wallpaper not showing up

It seems like I used to get my wallpaper (photo) up on the screen, (iPhone 3G Ver 4.2.1), when I pressed the round button to unlock. Now all I see is the battery condition no matter which picture I choose. I did press "set" to make it my wallpaper.

What am I doing wrong? Or has this changed?

Duh! My mistake. The whole time I was trying to change the wallpaper the iPhone was plugged into my computer and on external power, (charge). As soon as I unplugged it, the photo displayed. Senior moment!

Camera issue

So in the disaster movies, there is always a scene where someone is talking through a remote camera that begins going fuzzy, blinking, cutting out and eventually going to black. That is the present state of my main iPhone 4 camera, although not to black -- yet. It has become a pinkish checkerboard where I used to have a nice clear view, both still and video versions. Anyone have an idea? Am I destined to take a road trip to an Apple store? It just started yesterday. There have been no drops or anything that I'm aware of and it is housed in an Otterbox case.

Camera 3gs

for whatever reason, when I tap on the camera, it will open then close. The iris will sometimes open so I can see objects but immediately closes.

I had a couple of bar code apps and they still work. Thinking of a conflict, I deleted them but the camera still does not work properly.

One other thing I have notice lately is other apps have been closing too right after opening. I thought it was just they were geared more to the 4g phone but now I am wondering.

Have you tried a hard reboot? Hold power button and home button down until apple logo appears ( do not use slider to turn power off when it appears). This will reset the phone but not any of your personal settings.

update - I tried rebooting, I tried a hard reboot and finally said heck with it. In iTunes I just reset it then reinstalled the last backup. It now works.

In preparation for our annual family letter I looked over the "last 12 months" of iPhotos and noted that in several instances there were as many as 8 copies of the same photo, all next to each other in iPhoto. They all came from my iPhone camera. Photos from other sources appear only once.

Most likely when you imported the pics you didn't delete them from the iPhone so when you connected the iPhone again it imported them again. Generally, iPhoto asks whether you want to re-import them again though. Maybe you turned off that nag dialog somewhere in the past.

Second answer, maybe. I've always just scrolled through and deleted the extras though, so I don't know.

If you are on a Mac and you are trying to delete the photos from your iphone that you have, you can connect your iphone to your Mac via the USB cable and open iPhoto. The option to import a selected few or all is given and also the option to delete the imported files from your iphone is also given.

On my iPhone, I can't seem to add pictures to the Facebook Mobile app from my Photos Camera Roll. Did Facebook drop this feature? I know I did this before the last upgrade. When I go under the Photos section in the Facebook App, all I can do is create an Album and not add any pictures.

Am I missing something?

You can do it from facebook...like you are updating your status. Touch the picture icon, and then select, choose from library.

Actually, I am in the same boat as Mark. Before the upgrade, I could pick
which album to load the picture to (so if it was of my dog, I could put it in the "Georgie" file). Now, I just upload the picture, and it only goes to the Mobile Upload album... you can't choose where it is placed.

Downloaded photos off my computer?

When I was syncing my IPhone 4 I saw I could import photos. Silly me, I thought I was importing the iphone photos from the phone to the computer (HP pavilion XP), but instead, I ended up with all the photos from my computer onto my phone. That's not a big problem because I have 32g and not that much else on it taking up space right now.

However, a lot of the photos are duplicates or simply bad photos that I'd just as soon delete off my phone -- but not off the computer. I don't see any way to do that. Suggestions?

Two options:

Segregate the photos you want to copy to the iPhone from those you don't and point iTunes to use only the folder with the photos you do,

or use Photoshop Elements' Organizer to create albums and set iTunes to use Photoshop Elements instead of a folder location.

Why do some photos have duplicates on iPhone but not on the PC?

I have the iPhone 3GS and synch it on a PC, XP.

Regarding photos I have them under "My Pictures" and are listed by folder e.g. a
vacation, family members, etc.

I noticed that several of my photos in some folders had duplicates on the iPhone
but not in the computer file, but most of the photos did not have duplicates.

I couldn't figure out how to delete the duplicates on the iPhone so I unchecked
all the photo folders in iTunes and did a synch. Then I closed and reopened
iTunes, rechecked all the photo folders and did a resych.

Now it looks like even more photos are duplicated on the iPhone, but all, and
only in certain folders. The PC folders remain constant with one of each photo.

Please help. What could be causing this and how can I get rid of all the dupes
on the iPhone?

When I set iTunes to sync photos from a location, I have no options to pick and choose what subfolders to sync, it just syncs photos in all subfolders of the selected location. The only option I have to sync some but not all is if I instead set it to sync albums from a supported photo manager application (Photoshop Elements in my case).

This is also in Windows, using iTunes 10.

I have the Iphone 3gs and have recently upgraded to 4.0.2. I noticed that since that upgrade my photos are blurry. I think it is all the photos that was taken with the Iphone because pictures from a camera show up ok. Has anyone else had this problem and can someone help me fix this?

Updating Photo Library

I'm not sure what happened but tonight I tapped the camera icon and it said something about updating photo library.......it took forever which was upsetting because I needed to use my camera. But even MORE upsetting is that now I have lost MONTHS of photos!! Does ANYONE have ANY idea what happened and how to get my photos back?!?!?

Are you using the HDR feature to photograph normal scenes of not-particularly-high contrast, or are you selectively trying to photocapture scenes with a high dynamic range?

HDR (High Dynamic Range) takes three snapshots. Underexposed, "properly" exposed (normal), and overexposed. It then combines these three to mute out (provide detail) high whites and darks to give you a better exposure overall.

Now, this may or may not be desirable. Typically, HDR photos as taken on an iPhone aren't as soft (good shadow to emphasize something) and warm (darker colors).

Where HDR shines is taking a pic of something in harsh light or where there are a lot of shadow areas (not black holes, just shadowy). If you want to compare "normal" to HDR, take a picture from a few different angles of a bookcase with lots of items on it. In the normal pictures, you'll notice a difficulty in determining color in shadow (like the spine of a book) or the undersides of shelves cloaked in shadow. In the HDR pic, you'll be able to determine color much better and while there will still be some shadow, it won't be as opaque as the normal picture and you'll be able to see detail that's not visible in the normal pic.

It's not magic. HDR isn't going to turn all your photos into National Geographic material. For that, you'll need to practice and learn how to take good pics. For those who are photographers, sorry for all the lay terms. I'm not a photographer. I usually take good pics and sometimes I get lucky and take a phenomenal pic, but I'm definitely not a photographer by any stretch of the imagination.

Just FYI too, you can't have HDR on and flash on at the same time.
Enabling one will disable the other. FYI two, if at the top it says HDR On, then it means HDR is On. You'll know it's on because after taking the pic it'll say saving HDR.

My personal preference is not to turn off the setting to save the normal pic and the HDR pic as it gives me the option later to choose which I like best. Slows things down while taking pics as it has to save both, but I can live with that.

HDR = High Dynamic Range. It's used when there is more dynamic lighting range to the scene than the camera can handle with one image. So you (or the camera) take two or more images and then combine them, keeping the best exposed parts of each eliminating the blown highlights and lost shadows.

Depending on the desired effect and quality of the merge, the end result can be anywhere from realistic looking "can't tell the difference" to "artsy".

Has anyone had success with using a USB cable to transfer pictures from Your iPhone 4 to a photo machine at say Wal-Mart.

I receive some great pic on my iPhone I would like to have printed. I usually have to go home and down Load the pix from my Desktop to a USB memory chip and then go back To Wal-Mart to get them printed !

Unless a new feature of iOS4 is the ability to use it as a flash drive, then this is probably not possible natively. I know there are apps that let you kinda-sorta do that via WiFi, maybe by now there's one that works via USB? But if there is, its data store is likely segregated away from the device's main storage.

When you plug an iPhone (and assuming the upcoming iPod touch) into any computer it identifies itself just like a digital camera does, it works fine when I plug it into my DVD player (which supports Digital Camera (DCIM) photo playback) so it should .

It mounts as a camera and you can get to pics in the Camera Roll. At least pre-Win7. It may work on Win7, but I've only got one Win7 machine to test with and it doesn't work. Worked great on my WinXP machine though.

3GS Camera Disappeared

My iPhone 3Gs standard camera has disappeared from the main screen. I found it under something named "Utilities" that just appeared there, along with one other app named Sol Luna which tracks moon-sun rises & set.

The camera is hardly a "utility" and I have at least 10 photography apps, none of which found their way to "Utilities"

I don't know how apps can get into folders unless we put them there. Can't you simply drag it out again (press until the app icons start wobbling)?

"Utilities" is just one of the default iOS folder names.

If you upgraded your iPhone 3GS to iOS 4, then you may find that when you drag one app on top of another (whether intentionally or accidentally), it will create a folder with those two apps in it, and it will name the folder something relevant. If you dragged the Camera app on top of the Sol Luna app (or vice versa), it's likely that iOS 4 created the Utilities folder for you.

You can always drag it back out of the folder.

I'm not what you mean here but here goes. The photos are stored in a folder on your PC that you tell iTunes to copy (sync) to your iPhone. If you remove the photo from that folder, the next time you sync, iTunes will remove it from your iPhone.

I have a MacBook Pro and v4.0.1 on my iPhone. *I need step-by-step directions* for storing my 2,000+ iPhone photos & vids onto an external HD. I think it would be to go ahead and sync the photos & vids from phone to computer, then find the photos (WHERE?), copy to an external HD, then trash all I don't want off the computer. ???

This is simple but time consuming...

On your MacBook Pro, plug in your iPhone like you are going to sync it. Then once plugged in, open iPhoto. It'll ask you if you would like to import your photos. Let it import your photos... this is what will take all the time, depending on your MBP's processing speed. If you have 2000+ photos, you might wish to do this just before bedtime, and finish-up in the morning. Maybe not that long, but you get the point.

You can edit the pix in iPhoto, and even add other photos from there then bring them back into the iPhone.

If you then "right-click" on one of those images in iPhoto, the Mac will tell you the file itself ("show in finder" or some such). Then you know the directory/folder they're all in, if you want to back them up off the computer.

But surely they would be backed up along with your other files as part of your regular backups? Many Mac users use Time Machine; many others use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner, or a combination of these.

If they are *also* on a separate external drive, that *is* a backup. If they are on an external *instead* of the internal drive, there is no backup unless a 2nd external is used for that.

If you are asking for a way to transfer photos from the iPhone to your computer. One way is to just email them to your main computer and save them in a place of your choice.

I use ImageCapture.app to pull my iPhone photos to my MacBookPro. That way you can store the images wherever you want - say in a different folder than iPhoto designates.

ImageCapture.app is found in your Applications folder. You can download all images, or just one.

I almost never use iPhoto but do all editing in Photoshop Elements 6, a much better program.

Just my $2 worth (adjusted for inflation).

iCapture is for Windows, not Mac (and it isn't in my Applications). How are you accessing it for your MacBook??

Other than that, I found 11,609 images in my Pictures folder on my MacBook HD. Okay. Ultimately I think I can save all the iPhone pix & vids to Pictures (HOW??), copy them to an external HD, then erase them off my MacBook.

When I went into iPhone sync in iTunes, it allows me to copy all my iPhoto pix into my iPhone, but that's all I see! NOT what I want.

That may well be true, but *Image Capture* is an Apple application that comes with the operating system and is located in the Applications folder.

I must admit that I don't know for how many generations of the operating system it has been there, but for a few years at least.

Squinting, with clenched teeth, one shoulder raised to protect myself.. I finally hit the button to get all the pix & vids off my iPhone and onto an external HD. I didn't foresee what happened. It wasn't Image Capture after all, which will bring images into the computer from a camera.. it did not see my iPhone. And btw, I never sync photos to or from the phone. I don't need all my photos everywhere, not on my iPad either.

What imported 2,000+ .jpg, .png and .mov files was the Import function of HP Photosmart Studio. I connected the phone and the ex HD to my MacBook Pro and the printer software saw the iPhone. I directed the Import to the ex HD and walked away as it worked for a long time.

Being a learning experience, I didn't know until afterwards that the iPhone files would also be recorded in All Images on the Mac HD: again, not what I wanted. That particular folder seems to be home to every "picture" that your computer has ever used.. like files called "brown" or "left corner" and every icon you never noticed as your innocently browse your way through life or download on purpose. I had downloaded a trial version of Word and it put every thing in the world on my computer. I didn't buy it at the end of thirty days but there remained all the stuffings of Word on my HD. That's ONE example.

What's on YOUR hard drive? Sit back and look at your computer. Just about everything you see is a picture; how much of it is recorded in All Pictures? No wonder I had 11,000 and more. Yes, a lot of my own JPGs, TIFs and NEFs are there. When the importing was finished, the 11,000+ had also duplicated itself to 22,000+ on the external HD. Don't ask me why. I painstakingly cleared the duplication. Do I need to sit with an expert before I do something like that again? YUP.

There's a Mac clean-up software that I see advertised sometimes - that might be a place to start too. Funny how you can happily use a machine for so long and know so little about what it's doing.

With a myriad of other things going on in life it'll be another day before I send any of the now safe-and-sound movies to YouTube (or CD) that I moved from the iPhone, since they were "too big to email," hence useless stored there. And I'm much more cautious about what pictures or movies I make with the iPhone now that I know the limitations for getting them OUT of the phone.

What's in - your ROOM! Do you have a bazillion CD's from years gone by with photos you'll use one day? What are we gonna do with all this (Stuff). I need help - but not with addition. Certainly not multiplication.
