Upgrade to iPhone 4?

Apple iPhone - Should I Upgrade to iPhone 4?

I have the opportunity to get a new iPhone for Christmas. My 3Gs is in good working order, and was swapped out recently, so it probably still has some good life left on it (and is under Apple warranty for another 8 months at any rate), and would be kept as a back up phone. Is the iPhone 4 enough of an improvement for it to be worth getting?

iPhone New
Free Apple iPhone New
I can tell you many will tell you. The jump to the iPhone 4 from 3GS is extraordinary. Really no comparison. I believe many will say. I don't have an iPhone 4, but in threads in the past. Addressing this and the question. Overall, it was resounding yes that it is well worth it.

-----
It's an easy comparison.

The iPhone 4 is better than the 3GS in almost every way.

My personal preference would have been that they NOT put the glass back and the sharp edges on it; I also liked the slightly greater "heft" of the 3GS. But these are not enough to make me want to go back.

The cellular sensitivity is better (in a case); the camera is better; the processor is faster; there is more RAM and potentially more storage; the camera is better even not considering it is 5 mega pixels instead of 3; the 2nd camera is there; and then there is the "Retina" display....

-----
I would think it good idea. However, the new iPhone 5 is only 7 1/2 months away, and seeing as your warranty will cover your 3GS until then, you may want to wait for the iPhone 5 and the inevitable improvements that come with it.

I too have a 32GB 3GS, but personally I am waiting for the iPhone 5. That said, iPhones are updated on a 12-month cycle, and we are exactly half-way through that cycle right now....

-----
No time like the present,
Time waits for no man.
get it now!!!
iPhone 4 was better however software could be downloaded to all 3g. Facetime is great if you need it. All the tech stuff, is great if you use it.

-----
For me the iPhone 4 *is* a vast improvement over the 3G and 3GS. I doubt that you'll hear from many who have a 4 and prefer an earlier model.

But, to each.......

I don't think you'll regret it if you upgrade.

I passed my 3GS along to my wife who enjoys it. (I think she's looking forward to me getting the *next* iPhone so she can have the great camera, display, etc etc on the iPhone 4).

-----
There is no comparison.
If you are happy with 3GS then you will be happiest with 4.
In other words, you will skip the "happier" stage.

Latest upgrade won't recognize printer

Apple iPhone - Latest upgrade won't recognize printer

My MacBook Pro, purchased about 6 months ago, worked great with my Canon Pixma ip9O portible printer until the latest OS update. Now my computer says I have to reinstall a driver. When I reinstalled from CD, it still didn't show up under printers. Does this mean my printer is no longer supported? Unfortunately a new portible printer costs about $400.00! (Fortunately I found I can still print from my old iBook.) Is the printer upgrade required so I will be able to air print from my iPhone 4, running latest version? Might be worth cost of new printer then.

iPhone Printer
Have you used Apple iPhone Printer
First I would check on the Canon site to see if they have any new updates for your old printer. That might be all you need to install.

You can also check out Printopia software for $10 that will allow printing using airprint from your iphone to most printers. They have a demo version that you can try out to see if it would work with your iphone and your old printer. Also make sure your printer is shared in your preferences settings on your Mac.

Sync Google Contacts"

Apple iPhone - "Sync Google Contacts"

Recently, I tried to sync my Google contacts with all contacts in my MacBookPro's Address Book by checking the box in iTunes, "Sync Google Contacts." I have 2300+ contacts in my AB, some of which are duplicates. After the sync was done, both Google and my AB wound up with 9800+ contacts -- and many thousands of dupes.

I had to use Time Machine to restore the contacts in AB. And, I've now deleted ALL Google contacts. (At least I thought I did... not sure that Google Voice did the same.)

I'd like to ensure that if I check the iTunes box "Sync Google Contacts" the same thing will not happen again. The goal is to get the same contacts from AB over to Google, and no more.

Currently, I have canceled my Mobile Me account and am syncing my iPhone directly with the MacBookPro via iTunes only, and it seems to be working OK for contacts.

The various Apple help articles are basically worthless respecting "Sync Google Contacts" -- What happens when this gets checked? What overwrites what? Or do the two systems combine contacts? Will my MacBookPro contacts all get put over to Google? Or, will Google's contact list (now empty) overwrite my MacBookPro Address Book, essentially wiping it out completely?

iPhone Google
Do you know Apple iPhone Google
I have all my contacts synchronized. GoogleContacts and MobileMe. The only thing is that I need to start my computer sometimes. In my case, I use my computer almost every day, so I have never noticed some delay to have my contacts in sync (including the pictures of the contacts). It´s a little bit different situation, but something can help you.

IMPORTANT : BACKUP ALL YOUR CONTACTS BEFORE !!!!!!!!!!!
The order you follow the steps may cause some duplicates !!!!

Pre-Condition: that your contacts are correct on the phone (or MobileMe), otherwise you can get from Google or AddressBook.

Take that Google removes duplicate and merge contacts !!!!!

1 ) Backup your contacts using iTunes !
2 ) Export your GoogleContacts to a .CSV file;
3 ) Delete all your contacts at your Google Account;
4 ) Start AddressBook on your Mac (that was already synchronized with your MobileMe account e check to synchronize with Google);
5) Started the sync and could see that all my 195 contacts (from my iPhone) (Me.com) were in my Google account;

Test #1:
Insert a contact on Google : 'sync' your AddressBook the contact was there and on your phone; Delete your contact on the iPhone (Me.com). After the sync, the contact was wiped off from Google

Test #2:
Insert a contact onMobileMe:
'sync' your AddressBook the contact was there and on your Google Account; Delete your contact on the Google .after the sync the contact was wiped off from iPhone (Me.com)

-----
Thanks,

I do not have Mobile Me because I've never had anything but trouble with it. So, I finally let it lapse.

So, I may just pass on syncing to Google. I've already deleted everything there.

Apple prides itself on being intuitive, that "it just works," etc. While they're still better than Windoze, it's all just so much crapola and marketing.

-----
After the sync at 9800 + contacts, you should have run the remove duplicates from google. The removal is good. Then your duplicates would not be there.

-----
What is the removal tool for duplicates in Google calendar & contacts?

-----
Contacts has duplicate removal option which is good. I'm not sure about the calender.

-----
It really works ! You can combine with the Merge tool !!!

both are available at Google Contacts !!

Open iTunes on connecting iPhone

Apple iPhone - Open iTunes on connecting iPhone

Hey, folks. I used to have iTunes open automatically when I connected my phone. When I go to the options on iTunes, this choice is still there, but it's grayed out and can't be checked. What's up with this? Does the latest update just flat-out forbid this, or is there something I have to change on my phone to make this work?

I've just plugged in my iPhone to check this out for you, but the option is still there and mine isn't greyed out, even though I have it set to manually sync. Hopefully someone else can help you.

Can't pair iPhone to Apple keyboard

Apple iPhone - Can't pair iPhone to Apple keyboard...

ios 4 has support for using a bluetooth keyboard with your iPhone 4. When I turn on bluetooth on my iPhone a 'Devices' panel appears and says 'searching'. It never finds my Apple Bluetooth keyboard though, so I can't pair it. What can I do?

iPhone iOS
Apple iPhone iOS
Same thing happens to me. I didn't know why it is happening. Anybody have suggestions?

-----
Not an expert, but ensure the keyboard is not paired to anything else. If so disconnect, unpair, whatever called. Fresh batteries, installed the correct way. Don't forget to turn the keyboard on. That's what I had to do the last time.

-----
I was able to pair my iPhone 3GS.

Make sure bluetooth turned on in Settings>General

Hold down the power key on the side of your bluetooth keyboard until the small green light starts blinking.

Once you see 'Apple Wireless Keyboard .. Not Paired' under Devices, then select that a message 'Apple Wireless Keyboard' would like to pair with your iPhone .
Enter a pin XXXX

Type in the pin and you should be paired.

Hope this helps. I think the key is to hold down the power key for awhile on the side of the keyboard.

That trick worked when trying to connect my iPad and my iPhone. If you have it hooked via bluetooth to another device like an iPad, you can 'select the keyboard' and then select 'forget this device' to unconnect.

Key is to hold down the power key for awhile on keyboard. Also you can turn bluetooth off and on to reset the bluetooth as well and then hold down the power button on side of keyboard.

Number blocking

Apple iPhone - Number blocking

Can you block a number from calling? If so, how do you do that?? I have 3GS.

iPhone tutorials
This for you only Apple iPhone tutorial
Unfortunately no... You can set that number up with a silent ringtone and pretend you don't see your phone light up, but there is no way to just block the number, or send it to oblivion.

Well I take that back, you can get terribly complicated, send all of your calls through Google voice and let it block numbers for you and I had to go there once. It wasn't pretty, but it worked.

-----
The iPhone has no method for doing this except for selecting a silent ring tone for that particular contact.

-----
I would love to be able to do this. The Droid does have this ability. Someone made up a number to a credit card company and it is mine. I do not have that credit card and no matter how often I told them they still called. I finally had to write the CEO and his assistant finally stopped the calls. But it would have been so much easier to just block them.

-----
You can download a free app called YouMail and you can designate certain numbers to receive a message that says your number has been disconnected.

-----
If you're AT&T, there's "Smart Limits" that lets you list numbers to block calls/texts. It's more of a parental control thing, but does block numbers. It's an extra $5 a month, or something like that.

Can't move icons folders

Apple iPhone - Can't move icons or folders

I have an iPhone 3GS running on iOS4.1. It's seems to have developed an odd but infuriating issue. I can't move icons or folders anymore. I press on any icon or folder and nothing happens. I've tried resetting all settings. At the moment I have no access to iTunes since my pc died from a hardware issue. I tried googling this and couldn't find anything that helped. Any ideas?

Second question...now that I have a new pc if I hook my phone up to a new copy of iTunes will I lose all my apps, pics, music, etc? Is there any way to save it? I can't put the old hard drive in the new pc as it's not compatible. Any ideas!

iPhone Icon
WOW hot Apple iPhone icon
Try a hard reset of your phone (hold down home and power until you see the apple logo)

As far as moving to a new computer, yes you are going to lose all of your content - to save pictures you can plug in the phone - close iTunes and use either the native Windows Image Importer, Picasa, or iPhoto (if on Mac) and import all photos and videos from the Camera Roll. You can open iTunes, right click on the device and click Transfer Purchases which will copy all of your apps and any content purchased on the phone to that computer (as long as both are authorized on the same iTunes Account.

Aside from that there are a few apps that let you mount your phone as a disk and copy off what you can find - Phone Disk was the one that was free last week, but that promotion has ended. You can Google "Access iPhone Files from Windows (or Mac)" and find compatible programs, some may even have free trials that may let you access what you want to keep.

Once you have done everything you can to get photos/etc from your phone you then sync with the new computer in iTunes and the phone will then be linked with that copy of iTunes / computer.

-----
Tried the hard reset and still nothing. Cant move, remove, or get icons to wiggle. Don't know what else to try or how this happened but it really is a pain!

If I sync my phone with the new pc and restore my apps from my account on iTunes will it restore my saved game files or do I lose those too?

-----
If your "new" PC is a Win 7 PC use the transfer utility to transfer all your files from old to new.

I moved from a XP machine to a Win 7 PC and my iPhone never knew the difference.

xmas ipad??

Apple iPhone - xmas ipad??

I am trying to decide what I want for xmas - ipad or tab.

one question about the ipad. across the bottom it seems to basically have 4
icons across the bottom like the iphone. To me it looks so unsymmetrical, are
users able to put more icons across the bottom or stuck with the four icons?

iPhone iPad
Special for you Xmas Apple iPhone iPad
You can have up to 6

-----
You can put six icons. I don't think you can go wrong with an iPad IMO.

-----
You can do up to 6 in my experience I bought the archos tab & I had a hard time with the android system I sent it back after a week & ordered an iPad I couldn't have made a better decision apple's products are so user friendly that's probably why they sell so well

-----
Keep in mind, that the couple of other "tablets" require an additional contract for a monthly data plan. The iPad is optional even if you buy the 3G model, meaning you can turn it on for a month then turn if it off and only use WiFi for a year, etc. I haven't used one myself but Android fans do like the Samsung Galaxy Tab but it is a big difference than an iPad and about half the total screen size.

-----
What did you find hard about it? Android OS 2.2 works almost identical to how the iPhone and iPad works.

I went from an iPhone to Android EVO and didnt have any problems.

-----
The Archos tablet is nothing like the Samsung, in fact if I remember correctly, it runs Android 1.6

-----
Setting up my email & deleting items maybe it was the archos itself so I won't go blaming android so quickly

-----
I have the iPad 3G and have used the Samsung Tablet and I would say research both and see which has more of the features you want as they are both very different. The current iPad does not have dual cameras and some other things the Galaxy does have but I bet the next iPad will have them if you can wait. There is also the size difference, I like the iPads larger size but my friend with the Samsung wanted more portability. Again its what you need.

If you want a lot of apps including major names, more magazines and support, don't play online games, do video chat like BlogTV or watch a lot of online videos, be tied to iTunes on a computer to activate, backup and get updates, and limited to however much storage you first bought, the iPad is nice.

If you need flash for websites, want less apps but a greater variety of them including adult apps, don't want to be tied to a computer for updates and can backup/sync many things OTA or with the Cloud, need unlimited storage with removable memory cards, the Samsung is nice.

I have the Android EVO and iPad 3G so I can use both app stores.

-----
I can put more than that. And even more in landscape mode.

I don't think that's a major issue in choosing a device. It's what you find more appealing and familiar to you. I presume iOS since this is an iPhone forum. But if you are more comfortable with Android, then get an Android device.

Actually, six (=

The best for you Apple iPhone Apps
I don't know of anything that will open a DBF file (there could be something - Filemaker maybe?) but if you can export it to an Excel sheet you can store it in documents or email and open it natively...

-----
If you can turn it into a PDF file there are also a lot of free PDF reader apps, though I don't know if any of the *free* ones will do such a large file (or how large the file would be as PDF), as well as reading it as email.

-----
I just need to view it.
The editing will be done in dbf file using foxpro since it requires extensive database functions.

-----
FileMaker pro on mac will open dbf file. FileMaker go for iPhone will open and edit the file

No Sim card

Apple iPhone - No Sim card

I just purchased my iPhone 4 from Apple store today It came with no SIM card so until I get one, I cannot do anything with my phone I tried syncing with iTunes but no go.

2nd When the SIM card expire will the WIFI part of the iPhone still work or do I need to have an uptodate SIM card

iPhone SIM Card
What s happen with your Apple iPhone SIM Card
You should be able to use the phone without a SIM. I haven't tried it on i4 but I have used iPhone, 3G, and 3GS phones without sims.

-----
I have never heard of an iPhone not working when it left the store. In the U.S. this is always the case.

-----
I am getting message
No SIM Card installed
Insert a valid SIM with no PIN lock to activate phone

-----
Right to activate the phone, but you can still use everything but the actual phone (make/receive calls) - I think Canada sells the phones unlocked and lets you choose carrier but I thought that the Apple Store would let you choose a carrier and set it up for you before you leave. If buy an iPhone in the store or have it delivered to you in the states it comes with an AT&T SIM card in it and is activated when you turn it on.

-----
Yes if you buy from Apple it is unlocked and you have a choice of carrier, and they all have there own SIM card

I will get a carrier to set it up tomorrow and see after if I can make it work without a SIM card

-----
An iphone4 requires a micro sim, even if you buy an unlocked one from a store by paying full price. However, the sim need not be without pin. I bought one in Belgium and got micro sim from a carrier although it is pin locked but I use public hotspot.

-----
Got a SIM card today and iPhone is working fine now

Car use

Apple iPhone iPod Touch - Car use

I have a 2nd Generation iPod Touch that my wife and I use to listen to audio books while we are making our weekly 100 mile (one way) drive. I also 'have' a Kensington Liquid Aux holder/stand/charger. I like the fact that it charges the iPod while it is playing. Last week the part that fits into the power port broke - the tip came off and it tripped a fuse in the car.

I got the tip out, so there is no damage. I was able to re-assemble the item but I don't trust the thing. If I were to make a permanent fix I would glue the plastic seam the separated back and hope that works. Like I said, I don't trust is.

On the trip back I plugged the aux cord in and it worked fine. It did not charge the iPod though. I plugged in the charger cord I have through the working power port, but the sound cut off as soon as I did. I can use an arrangement like this when using house power, but not a car.

I am not fond of putting the weight of the iPod int the power port - I was afraid of damaging the port, but it looks like I damaged the device instead.

Does anybody know of a device that will let me charge and play the iPod at the same time? There is something from Griffin that works like the Liquid Aux but it uses FM and it still mounts in the power port. I attempted to use the car's USB port, but that did not work well. Is there something that uses a suction mount that allows me to charge and play at the same time.

ITunes Bug?

Apple iPhone - ITunes Bug?

Has anyone else had this happen?

I double clicked on iTunes on my PC (all software was already up to date) and had not even connected my iPhone 4 to synch, when a box popped up saying "please answer a few questions to improve operation of iTunes" or something to that effect.

Then it asked 2 or 3 questions like "Do you want to manage your files or have iTunes do it for you?". I said I wanted to manage them myself. Then it started copying files beginning with apps and for each of my 200 apps it said "there is already a newer version of this app installed; do you want to replace it anyway? I said no 200 times.

It then proceeded to copy all the old versions of the apps and also duplicated all my books, videos, some playlists etc. What the heck happened? I am now afraid to synch which I need to do daily for my calendar and work.

All I did was start iTunes as I always have. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

iPhone iTunes
How to solved problem Apple iPhone iTunes
I had that very same thing happen to me a couple of weeks ago. I have no
idea why and didn't appreciate all the cleanup I had to do afterwards.

-----
Advice: If you have anti-virus software, run it.

This does not sound like Apple, they do not ask how to improve their software. (You can send them feedback, but they never ask, and very seldom survey.) If there was no iPhone, iPod or iPad attached, it should not back up or copy anything.

I'm a Mac user, so I can not give you specific advice other than to run your AV software.

-----
What mess afterwards?

-----
Duplication of many songs, random changing of song titles, random changing of genres, apps conflicts, itunes settings changed.

Charger cord to short

Apple iPhone Battery - Charger cord to short

Is there an extension for the Iphone charger or a longer cord, this cord is just
barley long enough to reach my night stand from the wall socket?

iPhone Battery
Solved problem Apple iPhone Battery
I had to buy a small extension cord. Best way and cheap.

-----
Look at thepocketsolutions iPhone 4 travel charger. It is almost 4 ft. long.

Works great.

-----
Just buy a cheap electrical extension cord at Walmart or Home Depot.

That's what I did.

-----
Griffin Technologies makes a 10' (3 Meters?) USB to dock cable.

-----
I have the following type of extension cable that my husband bought me and it works great for the same problem I also had.

Apple Styled USB Extension Cable (3.5ft Long) - Doubles the Length When Connected to Your Existing iPhone, iPad, or iPod Cable - Ideal for Any Device That Uses, Charges or Syncs Using USB by XTG Technology.

He ordered off Amazon.com for about $8

-----
I'll third, you can buy a $1 extension cord at any Wal-mart, Pharmacy, Dollar Store, etc. If you want a "USB" Extension Cable they are $8-$15.

-----
Agree, that having an expensive extension cord is good as well. I carry a multi plug extension cord when I travel as most of the plugs in the hotel are usually in an inconvenient place and it allows me to charge my iPhone and iPad conveniently while on the road or traveling. Also has come in handy to use with a laptop, ipad or iphone in most airports as well.

-----
whoops meant to say inexpensive extension cord.

-----
Besides being the cheaper solution, I keep a 6 foot multi-plug extension cord in my electronics kit for travel.

That and a small 3-prong to 2-prong adapter. I used to travel for work about a third of the time. I used to haul so much misc electronic junk that I took a small man's toilet kit bag and made it my electronics travel kit. This kit has gotten smaller over the last few years, but the extension cord and adapter are still the most used items, other than the USB charger.

Nike + iPod?

Apple iPhone - Nike + iPod?

I was just using the Apple "Settings" app and looking at the "App" preferences that are in the last half of the opening screen. While there, I noticed an app titled "Nike + iPod". It has a lot of preferences and I turned it "On" and found they were all live and settable. I turned it back "Off". But the main thing I wanted to ask is: What is it there for? I don't have an app called "Nike + iPod" or anything resembling that. Any ideas?

You are right. I tried to delete it and found out I can't. So it must be one of Apple's own apps. Nike must be paying Apple a bundle for the exclusiveness.
That makes Nike the first 'Adware' on the iPhone!

Mac Fuse Con-Fusion

Apple iPhone - Mac Fuse Con-Fusion.

Several people wrote in yesterday or the day before about the Mac Fuse promotion. Supposedly one could get it for free through 12/1. I downloaded it and, like the others, found no way to get a free authorization number as promised. I wrote to support and was referred to a page... which was nothing more than there products page. I wrote back asking what I was missing, and received this reply:

" I'm sorry to hear that. Due to constant changes and program enhancements, the free code won't work now and you may need to buy a code to register Phone Disk. However, you may also want to check a 100% freeware called iPhone Explorer. This similarly works like Phone Disk but only differ with their interface. I hope you understand. Thank you. Regards, Graciela "

Well, that's support for you. Whether this was a bait and switch tactic, an honest mistake, or something else, I do not know. But I've removed the program from my Mac and won't be bothering with this company any further. When someone offers something, I think they should facilitate your taking them up on the offer. I will, however, check out iPhone Explorer as suggested, if it's Mac compatible. I will say that Graciela was certainly timely in her responses, if not particularly helpful.

Copy contacts

Apple iPhone - Copy contacts

Is anyone can help me i want to transfer my contacts from my iPhone to the PC then transfer them back.

iPhone iPhone tutorials How to do Apple iPhone iPhone tutorials You can use microsoft outlook via itunes. Sync your iphone, especialy at the info tab to microsoft outlook. It will copying your contact at iphone to outlook. Then if you want to transfer from outlook to your iphone, do the same steps as before

-----
Is there any other way

-----
Most PC users do not use their Windows Address Book, instead preferring to use Outlook, Eudora, Thunderbird, or Gmail, etc. Thus this database is usually empty.

Happily, iTunes is ready to sync your contacts with your Windows Address book. Assuming yours is empty, you can simply sync your iPhone with the Windows Address Book, and all the contacts will show up on your PC. (The checkbox for this action is under the "Info" tab on your iPhone page in iTunes.)

You can also import contacts from other databases as VCards into the Windows Address Book to add back onto your iPhone, but I recommend reviewing them once they're on you iPhone. Most of my 800+ contacts transferred unscathed, but some were strangely merged with others.

WAB is something that came with Outlook Express, which is *no longer available* since OE is no longer supplied or supported. So unless you already have it from XP (& I don't know if you can somehow import it over into a newer Vista or W7 system), you just *don't have WAB*.

I've never used Outlook (overkill for most home users) or Eudora, can't stand TB, don't even want to think about GMail, etc. LOTS of people are still using OE -- which uses/maintains WAB. I don't know why you think "most" PC users aren't using WAB.

I use Windows Live Mail for email & Usenet; it has a contacts section -- but that does NOT sync with iDevices through iTunes. Apple/iTunes apparently ignores the fact that WAB just isn't *there* anymore except for some old fogey types. I do still have it on my computer since I'm still using WinXP;

I can still access it -- but its days are numbered and new contacts don't get put in there automatically when I use a new email address (for a new contact) through WLM. The only new contacts put in my WAB are the ones I've put on my iPhone & synced to it, or a few I've made specific efforts to add (after remembering that I had to do it that way, it isn't just happening because I've been emailing someone new.)

I don't want everyone on my phone anyway, just a few selected groups.

I have no idea what I'm going to do about contact-list-management if/when I update my system.

Hope to muddle through, I guess.

-----
I am using Win 7 Home and "Contacts" is built in. That is where I backup my contacts. There is no email program built in.

-----
Does iTunes sync to that?
Otherwise how are you backing up your contacts that you enter directly on your phone?

-----
Yes iTunes does sync with Windows Contacts. It is one of the choices that iTunes gives me under "Info" and "Sync Contacts with".

-----
Glad to hear it.

I guess it's just the WLM version it doesn't "get" at least under XP.
I can still use WAB under XP, even though I'm not using OE but was wondering about what would happen if/when I go to Win7.

The same things recommended here work with Outlook 2011 for Mac. In Prefs / Sync Services, set to sync Outlook with Address Book and MobileMe. Seems to work well (so far).

Syncing: Combine, or

Apple iPhone - Syncing: Combine, or

Let's say I have an iPhone that I've never synced with my laptop iTunes or any other computer. I have ten songs on my iPhone, and ten totally different songs on my laptop. I decide to finally sync the iPhone with the laptop (I have "Sync songs" checked.) Does iTunes combine both libraries, so that the iPhone and the laptop both end up with 20 songs? Or does iTunes transfer the ten-song library from one device to the other, deleting whatever was on that device originally?

Media are synced one way, from iTunes to iPhone (or iPod): the 10 songs in iTunes will replace the 10 on the phone. IOW it's not a true sync.

I'm not sure if using a manual sync avoids this.

If you create a play list on iTunes...then add it to the ipod/phone...wouldn't it just copy over the playlist?

Minor Podcast Syncing Annoyance

Apple iPhone - Minor Podcast Syncing Annoyance

Perhaps others have solved this issue, but it has me buffaloed.

I have an iPhone 4 that I sync once or twice each day with iTunes on my desktop PC, which runs on Windows XP.

Each time I sync the iPhone with iTunes, it completes the process fine with one exception: One (and only one) podcast that is on my "recently added" list is consistently omitted from the iPhone.

When I immediately sync the phone again, the missing podcast is installed on the iPhone without a problem. So if I want to obtain a full sync with the desktop, I must complete the sync twice.

The date/time of the missing podcast, its size, length or any other detail appears to play no role in which podcast is omitted. However, the missing podcast has been downloaded since my last syncing of the iPhone.

Now admittedly, the world has worse problems than this to contend with, but it is an annoyance. Has someone on this forum has faced this problem and found a solution?

The same thing has been happening to me for a while now.

It's got to the point where I often just sync twice in a row to make sure all my new podcasts and videos get synced properly.

Difference between the iPhone and iPad USB Cable?

Apple iPhone - Is there a difference between the iPhone and iPad USB Cable?

I find that when I try to sync my iPad that sometimes it is a very very slow sync. At first I thought it was my USB connection on my Mac.

I have two cables here one for iPad and one for iPhone and decided to abort a very long sync in iTunes and switch out the two cables. The following sync was faster.

Most of what I read on the internet says the cables are no different as far as hardware. but only in cosmetic appearance.

Just wondering if there is a difference and how do you tell cosmetically which is which?

iPhone iPad
What is Apple iPhone iPad
There is no difference in any of the Apple Cables - the generic 30 pin cables (Griffin, Monoprice, Cablesdirect, etc) have slightly larger connection and will not fit in some of the cases, especially the iPhone 4 bumper but they do not effect syncing at all.

-----
I was told by an Apple tech over the telephone that the two do work differently and that I should use the iPad cable with the iPad. That's what he said, but who knows if it really makes a difference...?

-----
The only thing that is different is the wall charger, the iPhone wall charger is lower wattage and will take much longer to charge than using the larger iPad charger the USB to 30 pin cable is exactly the same for every iPod/iPhone/iPad

-----
is there any risk in using the iPad charger on on iPhone 3G?

-----
I do it all the time without issues.

-----
I use my iPad wall charger to sometimes charge my iPhone 3G. It does not seem to impact the phone negatively. One thing I do note (or did prior to the new 4.2 update and I don't think it is happening now) was that the phone would not show as being charged even if it was.

-----
It would seem the cables should be identical. However, when I used my iPhone cable on my new iPad, the syncing was sometimes erratic. Then when I tried to download my music files from iTunes, it simply wouldn't download -- even after several attempts. I then tried the iPad cable and, voila, it synced perfectly. Weird!!

-----
Weird indeed.
I've been syncing my iPod Touch (2nd gen), iPad, & iPhone4 all using the sync cables that came with my iPODs from 3-4 years ago, with no problems.

-----
I know that I have different results using the cables interchanged. Possibly there were other factors involved that effected my syncs. My husband is an electrical engineer and is usually right, swears there is no difference and that even the chargers can be interchanged.

-----
The various ipod/phone chargers, maybe. But the iPAD (wall-)charger is bigger-- delivers more juice -- & that one does make a difference; you can use the iPAD charger for the iPOD & iPHONE though. The iphone charger (or the syncing cable hooked up to my laptop) will eventually charge the ipad, though very slowly & with the charge-display saying "not charging".

-----
I've had issues with cables that have gotten dirt/dust or moisture in the dock end (corrosion). Those dock connectors are VERY fine and the different devices depend on somewhat different pins so if you get "lucky" you might have a piece of dirt or lint that is messing up just the pin one device needs while the other ignores that signal. That could account for apparent differences. I have one cable that is problematic in a similar way but when you carefully inspect the dock connector end you can see that it has some gunk/corrosion in the end of the connector. They are so fine that I despair of trying to clean it without damaging it but you can use compressed air or maybe some ultra fine sand paper. Short of that, I just replace cables that have become unreliable. The dock connector is one of the more fragile connectors out there.

-----
For your kind information both are different cable , even though they look the same. I work for an Apple Authorized dealer. If you use iPhone cable for iPad , honestly you are killing your iPad....

-----
This should settle the USB cable question. This is from the Apple support page.

To charge your iPad , iPhone, or iPod, connect it to the 10W USB Power Adapter using a Dock Connector to USB cable . You can use the Dock Connector to USB cable that came with your device, or a compatible third-party cable.

PDF in iBooks

Apple iPhone - PDF in iBooks.

I suspect the answer is going to be it has to be the first page of the PDF, but I'll ask anyway.

Most PDFs I save into iBooks, like programming cheat sheets, my daughter's school crisis plan etc. Don't have a first page that lends itself to a nice iBook cover to display while on the shelf. That means I've got 30 some odd PDF books with covers I cant really make out what it is and there's no 'title' like apps on the home screen has. So it's usually pecking through a couple to find the right one.

Now, while I could get a PDF editor and make nice front cover pages, I really don't want that hassle.

So here's what I'm wondering. Books in iBooks, which I realize are a different file format that don't have a cover art page get a plain brown cover with title and author. I would love this fir my PDFs.

Now before anyone jumps the gun and says, well, that's just the way it is, I can assure you it's not. Perform this simple test. Take a nice big PDF file and give it a meaningful name. Stock Trading Tips.PDF for example. Now load it in iBooks. You'll notice that while it's parsing through the PDF fir the first time, it creates the same plain brown cover with an easily readable title reflecting the filename. Once it
finishes parsing, you get a thumb of whatever the first page looks like.

So, finally, here's the question. Is there a setting somewhere which will use the plain brown cover with filename as the title for PDFs? If so, where may I find this beast?

It's as you suspected. If the first page isn't a cover image the only way to have a cover displayed would be to edit the pdf and add the cover art to the first page.

This isn't the most elegant solution but it works for me on the Mac. I create a Word document (it could be created in any text program) that has one page. On that page I put the title of the pdf file, format the text nice and large and then File-->Print-->Save as PDF. I then open both my original pdf file and the newly created file in Preview. Drag the single page of the new pdf file onto the top of Preview's sidebar. This now adds the new file as "title" page for my pdf. When I bring this into IBooks it's easy to see the titles of my files rather than little micro-views of the first page.

Like I said, it ain't elegant, it should be easier, but it does work. At least on the Mac.

-----
At least it's a free option.

-----
Been my problem for a while now too.
So, we have to do trial and error in opening PDFs in iBooks for now.

I also hope a rename feature is available at least for the PDFs

-----
Sounds like a apple script job grab file name add to text doc, save as pdf add to front of original file. Can't be that hard...

-----
There's a list view in iBooks. I was going to go into detail but I just opened the app and found--nothing on my shelves. No PDFs, not even Pooh. Good thing I switched to GoodReader a couple of months ago. It does a better job of organizing and displaying PDFs than iBooks anyway.

If you have occasion to open PDFs with large, complex graphics pages, may I recommend TransitMaps. It stores them in a tiled form that opens and navigates fast. The LA Metro map used to crash ReaddleDocs, and iBooks wasn't real happy with it either. TransitMaps makes it a pleasure to use.
