Juice Pack Air Review

Apple iPhone - Juice Pack Air Review

If you buy one accessory for your iPhone 4 - make it be the Juice Pack Air. They did an EXCEPTIONAL job in styling and design so that it matches the phone exactly in color (black and silver outer stripe), it is rubberized to offer grip and maximum protection and is LIGHT as feather to double the battery life.

It, like the 'cheap' bumper looks like it was MADE to be part of the iPhone and so far I can tell of NO signal interference that I experienced and reported with the 3G/3GS slippery case. If the battery life holds up as well as the design and claim, it is well worth $79.95 (considering most cases without a battery are $29 or $39).

New iPhone

I wholeheartedly agree. The design is exceptional and perfectly matches the phone. So far I'm thrilled with it.

-----
Have you seen how long it will last just off of the Juice Pack yet or have you not had it that long? Instructions said it came fully charged but I plugged it in and only had 2 lights so I am charging it and my iPhone both to 100% now to see how long each will last before I have to charge next.

-----
I just got it last night. I haven't played with it enough yet. It did not come fully charged though. It had about two lights also.

3GS battery is failing badly

Apple iPhone - 3GS battery is bad

My 3GS battery is failing badly, going essentially to zero by 6 pm.

When I double click the home button, it shows Safari, Game Center, Phone, Mail and multiple others still running.

How do I shut off programs? I've tried by turning off notifications, shutting down bluetooth, and Mail is only to check once an hour. The only thing left is to put it in Airport mode or simply power it off.

The iPhone is only 5 months old.

iPhone Battery
Game Center Apple iPhone Battery
Hold down one of those running icons for a few seconds. Then they wiggle just like the desktop icons. You can then delete the programs that you want to stop.

-----
Of course, many of the programs displayed in the "rapid-switching" tray may not actually be running. It simply displays the last 40-odd Apps that were run.

-----
You might have a faulty battery.

I got my iPhone 3GS in July 2009. It worked great, but the battery life was nothing... it would bounce around between 13% and 85%, then just drop dead without warning. I got a new phone about a month into my contract, and no more of those problems.

-----
Just because an app appears in the try when you double click does not mean it is still running. It is really a fast switching system. It just saves your information so you can go back to the same location in a hurry. Very few things continue to run. Some that do are navigation software and VoIP.

That should read "appears in the tray".

-----
And it does not delete the apps, but "force quits" the apps.

To be clear, here are the steps. Double click the Home button and a tray of apps should appear. If you hold one they should all start to jiggle and have a minus sign appear on each. (The app running in the foreground will not be shown.) Click the minus to force quit the app. You can scroll right to see all apps that are available for fast switching, and some running in the background like audio players, GPS/navigation, and VoIP. Click the Home button once to stop the jiggle, and once again to return to the last page or the foreground app.

And if you are running an audio or video player (iPod.app, uTube, Pandora), Skype, Twitter, or Maps a lot during the day and you are getting to 6 PM, then your battery may be normal.

My 3GS was made & purchased in July of 2009 and used daily for the audio player, and since iOS 4 much more for email and video. 5 or 6 PM and nearing 20% or less sounds about right for my 14 month old 3GS.

-----
When you see that list, tap-hold until they wiggle. Should be obvious from there.

-----
It sounds to me like you are running iOS 4.0.x on your iPhone. I had the same problem after upgrading my 3gs to 4.0. Battery life was horrible. I temporarily solved it by making sure that Safari was turned off after leaving it. Others have told you how: double click home, hold the icon till it jiggles, then tap the - bar.

After upgrading to iOS 4.1, I no longer have that problem. I can leave Safari active in the multitask bar and it doesn't drain the battery.

It was a real pain to me to have to stop Safari that way, because of the 7 pages I keep open all the time, two of them require passwords to open and I would have to re-login. With 4.1, I no longer need to stop Safari from the multitask bar to save the battery, and I also do not have to re-login to the sites I keep open.

But... Sometimes you can reset your iphone to come alive, by connecting with iTunes.

See, now you have an answer that will work with iPhone and Windows PC.

If after you try the process, it is will not start up, I understand that the Apple Stores can reinstall the firmware that appears to have been corrupted and/or been erased from your iPhone. I have no clue if it is anything beyond the support article.

3G upgrade to iOS 4.1

Apple iPhone - 3G upgrade to iOS 4.1 stalled

After reading users' sluggish experiences with iOS 4.0.x I waited. Now I hear 4.1 is much better on the 3G. So I tried to upgrade. But every time I try it stalls trying to backup. It gets about 1/8 the way through and just sits at this point for hours.

Anyone else having this problem?

-----
Please can someone help me. My daughter has a 3G and I'm having the same problem. It won't download the new system!

-----
I have upgraded to iTunes 10. It turns out it wasn't really stalled. More like watching glaciers move. I left it alone and it took 6 hours to upgrade. Does anyone else think this is excessive?! What can take 6 hours???

I had downloaded all updates, sync'd, backed up, reset the iPhone, and restarted my Mac before beginning.

-----
When I was updating my 3G from iOS 3 to iOS 4 I had the same problem. The only way I found to make it work was to reset my iPhone to the factory fresh condition and then install the update. It's tedious and not a real solution, but this might work for you.

Needless to say you'll lose anyprogram settings, game saves, and such.

-----
Among other things, downloading a several-hundred megabyte file when the servers are busy....

-----
Yeah, well I had already downloaded the file. So that wasn't it. The wait was while it backed up the iPhone.

Can and iPhone 3g with no SIM card be used just as an iPod?. After restoring and installing latest OS it won't let me continue without the SIM card installed.

It should, just press the home button. I think maybe after doing a full restore using iTunes you do have to put any (even non-activated or deactivated) SIM in for it to get past the "Activation" screen then it will work fine.

-----
I tried that and yes it works until there is an update, then it requires a sim card to be installed or it bricked for me until I got one. Be careful!

-----
For the update, does that require an active or will an inactive SIM work?

I used a blank, inactive sim when I updated mine.

photos have duplicates on iPhone but not on the PC

Why do some photos have duplicates on iPhone but not on the PC?

I have the iPhone 3GS and synch it on a PC, XP.

Regarding photos I have them under "My Pictures" and are listed by folder e.g. a
vacation, family members, etc.

I noticed that several of my photos in some folders had duplicates on the iPhone
but not in the computer file, but most of the photos did not have duplicates.

I couldn't figure out how to delete the duplicates on the iPhone so I unchecked
all the photo folders in iTunes and did a synch. Then I closed and reopened
iTunes, rechecked all the photo folders and did a resych.

Now it looks like even more photos are duplicated on the iPhone, but all, and
only in certain folders. The PC folders remain constant with one of each photo.

Please help. What could be causing this and how can I get rid of all the dupes
on the iPhone?

When I set iTunes to sync photos from a location, I have no options to pick and choose what subfolders to sync, it just syncs photos in all subfolders of the selected location. The only option I have to sync some but not all is if I instead set it to sync albums from a supported photo manager application (Photoshop Elements in my case).

This is also in Windows, using iTunes 10.

Apple patents a lot of technology and ideas that they come up with. They don't USE all these things they have patents for, however.

That said, I suspect there will eventually be an iMac with touch-screen technology.

-----
Very interesting, wouldn't be the first but I'm sure (if it happens) it'll be innovative and 1 of a kind.

-----
Innovative? With Apple, definitely. One of a kind? Not so much, HP has had touch screen all in one machines for a couple years now and "Gateway" is starting to - never huge sellers and somewhat overpriced:

-----
If you do it right and works as Apple say it would then it would be great.

Ya. I thought it would be cool to have those touch screen monitor. But its so useless. You sit about two feet away and whenever you want to touch the screen, your hand hovers. How long can you have your hand hover like that?

Good to show off though.

1- Give us a clue as to what happened before the dark screen., like woke up one morning and the screen was dark, or an upgrade or DFU got interrupted.

2- Tell us what OS you run on you computer, to give us further clues, so we can propose a solution.

3- Learn how to start a new thread or post to the list so it does not cause threading issues to some email apps and "no sender, no subject, no content" problems to those reading your post on an iPhone.

-----
Once I went to pick up my phone and it was black, dead. The way I fixed it was: Hold down the "Home" button and the "On/Off" button (the one on the top right of your phone) at the same time for at least 20 seconds. Hopefully after holding both buttons down that long you'll see the Apple icon, meaning your phone is turning on. That may "reset" your phone, like rebooting your PC.

Is it possible to delete all previous backups since they are undated and then

There are two iPhone apps that allow your desktop to send growl notification to your iPhone - one is called prowl and the other is called....something, I can't recall. They are each a couple of bucks, but if you use growl alot, it allows one program to get push notification from twitter, facebook, email, etc. Whatever gives a growl notification on your desktop - the same message will appear on your iPhone.

Personally, its a bit much for me, but some people really like it.

Apple iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4?

Apple iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4?

Which one is better? I know that more expensive doesn't always mean better.

iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4
iPhone 3GS or 4G
More expensive doesn't always mean better but a year newer with faster processor, double the memory, and all around much better specs do - iPhone 4, if you want to save $50, AT&T is selling refurbs for $149 (16GB) & $249 (32GB).

-----
I will definitely go for the iPhone 4 now. My AT&T contract expires on October 11, so I will get me an iPhone 4 now. I do not want a refurbished one. I think that $299 for a top of the line phone is a fair price. I am excited and I can't wait! [?] I currently own an LG Vu.

-----
You will not be disappointed with the iPhone 4. It is an improvement over the 3GS in so many ways. I now have a bluetooth keyboard that I carry with me to type long emails and notes.

With iOS 4.1, bluetooth keyboard support is now built in.

-----
Where can buy the bluetoothed keyboard please? And is it compact and portable?

-----
You can get the nice Apple Bluetooth keyboard at the Apple store. Or look for a foldable keyboard on the Internet. I happened to buy one on eBay.

-----
Apple.com sells either their small light keyboard or a black fold-able one - I haven't had a need for the fold-able yet, but would at least give you a starting point of what to search for on Amazon and/or eBay, etc. Really any Bluetooth keyboard will work, the Apple keyboard dock has some special function keys for brightness, sound, etc but for the basic functions any BT keyboard will let you pair, type, etc.

-----
The only only black wifi keyboard I see at Apple isn't foldable. Which one do you mean?

-----
Use the AppStore app on your iPhone and search keyboards. It's made by Mathias and sells for $99.

-----
I agree, it is a fair price for such a great phone. I just wanted to chime in that Apple's refurbs are like new and carry the same new warranty. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a refurbished Apple device, as long as the refurbishment is by Apple.

-----
iPhone 4 definitely.

and, last but not least,

RETINA DISPLAY!

For me, the biggest thing is the increased battery life.

iPhone 14GB?

Apple iPhone - iPhone 14GB?

I have just received my new iPhone 4 and have notice that it displays a capacity of only 14.01GB instead of 16GB.

I'm aware that hard drives 'round up' their capacity but I would have expected 15.34GB or something. 2GB less seems extreme on a 16GB HD.

I've just checked my old 3G and, indeed, that displays 14.6 GB. That is still over half a GB better.

Why such a large discrepancy?

iPhone iOS
Hermione poster detail apple iPhone iOS
The space is taken up by the OS.

-----
Reall? I thought that was what 'Other' was.

-----
That's right. The OS resides in the same flash chip as your app memory... which is a good thing. That's why we can upgrade OS so easily compared to all the other "smart" phones! :-)

I don't know what Other is though.

-----
It is the OS and disk formatting. Other is taken out of the remainder like all user data.

-----
No, the 16 (or 32GB) is partitioned into two volumes - the OS is stored on one volume by itself and iOS 4.x on an iPhone 4 (and iPod Touch 4 likely) is the largest one yet, 619MB compressed - uncompressed it is over 1GB to power all of the functions (Game Center, FaceTime, etc).

"Other" is your user data that Apps save or download, etc.

-----
Why, thank you good people for clearing that one up

I must add that I was most impressed with the very smooth transition from my 3G to iPhone 4.

I expected all sorts of mishaps that would need correcting, lost app data, home screen pic, messages etc. Not a bit of it. I've picked up games whence I departed and can skim back over texts without hindrance. I've always had pretty problem free upgrades on my Macs but there is always a little techno husbandry needed to get things 'just so'.

I am a very happy bunny and am urging all my friends to do likewise as soon as possible.

-----
Just for the record, 16 GB (decimal) is 14.9 GiB ("binary" gigabytes).

Does anyone know if flash memory is measured in decimal GB as hard-drives are?

-----
Yes but OS X (and possibly iTunes on all platforms ) started reporting binary with snow leopard.

-----
I think you meant "started reporting *decimal*"?

AFAIK 10.6 is the only OS that uses decimal sizing by default. I've just checked and iTunes 10 uses the same binary sizing that OS 10.5 (and other OSes) does.

MobileMe Slow?

Apple iPhone - MobileMe Slow?

Am I the only one who realizes MobileMe just doesn't work? On the iPhone, it is great. Otherwise, it just doesn't come close to the numerous free alternatives.

I am so frustrated. I've been harassing support and trying to get some indication that they are working on improvements, not happening.
My gripes:
- web interface is slow as hell
- doesn't refresh automatically
- fails to connect, can't retrieve contacts
- fails to connect, won't send
- fails to include attachments
- slow, slow, slow
- did I mention it is slow?

I can't believe that this is what Apple is offering as a paid service when AOL, Google, Yahoo, Hotmail have been doing far better for years, for free. I expect these basic functions would be a given.

Has anyone seen indication that this might improve any time soon?

iPhone MobileMe
Please apple iphone mobileme
I think, you're the only one

-----
MobileMe doesn't work for me either. I wish I knew why not!!!

-----
Since the new release of mobile me my web interface is very fast

-----
I have never had any issue with MMe being slow on any of my machines (iMac, Mac Mini, Windows XP, Windows 7)

-----
I have not had any of those issues with MobileMe. Sometimes a new Calendar/iCal entry and other cross-platform entries are synced faster than I can exit from the input device and log into a different one to see it has already been wifi-synced by MMe. Hope you can discover what is slowing yours so much and remedy it.

-----
I don't use the web based MobileMe that much, but when I do, I notice it's slowness. Also, after the next to last update in the MobileMe desktop app, I have noticed it not syncing as it should with my Outlook. Granted, I am using Outlook 2003, but the last I looked, that was supposed to be supported by MobileMe. Since that upgrade, the "cloud" icon in the system tray constantly has the "syncing" arrows on it, and the only way I can sync is to manually invoke one on the desktop app.

Kind of frustrating!

-----
I am very surprised to see the responses.
To be clear, sync across desktops and iPhones is flawless. Near instantaneous. I would have to agree with that. Retrieving mail on iPhone, no issues at all.

Desktop (browser) is another story. I use AOL.com, I have used Gmail, Squirrel Mail. In web browsers on numerous Windows machines, these systems are quite tolerable. Side by side with me.com, MM is a slug.

Why is it unable to automatically check for mail? I have to manually refresh, usually when I hear incoming tone on my iPhone. Click refresh once, nothing happens. Click again, screen clears then wait for it... It's coming... here it comes now...
Well let's just say, in Gmail I would have already reviewed all incoming mail and responded by the time I get to see new mail in MM. Not to mention, if the message is spam, Google's filters are exceptional. MobilMe filter involves mostly me moving spam to junk folder.

Nobody has ever composed a new MM message and seen the little error icon at the right of the recipient field? This, when it cannot retrieve your contacts. Copy the text from body to new message and try again. Cross you fingers.

At one point I was sending emails and recipients would receive stripped of attachments.

Another time nobody received anything that I forwarded.

-----
When I try to create a new contact on my iPhone I literally better walk away and come back in 10 minutes before it saves the new contact. Then I look and it's gone. Not in the iPhone. It's not on me.com. It's not on the Mac.

I wish it was really a smooth operation!

I would like to sync to the cloud but it just doesn't want to cooperate.

I may need to seek some help from the genius bar!

-----
Strange, I have MobileMe, at least one Google Account, and at least one Google Apps (private/business domain run through Google) on every machine and device, some have other accounts but my three main accounts are on everything and a change on one device or machine is near instant across everything else on both services under all OSes.

That has been done long ago and remains checked.

What happens if I "restore?"

I clicked on Restore and the warning says everything gets erased, including all media. How would I put that back - songs and other data, all the apps, etc?

-----
Game Center isn't malware, it is their new Social Gaming Network and your Apps should be in iTunes, when you plug in your phone click on it in the device list then click on the Apps tab, check which ones you want to sync and click Apply. If for some unknown reason you did not transfer your purchases to iTunes, when you go to them, and click "Buy" it will tell you that you already bought the app and let you download them again at no charge.

-----
Do you mean that I have to go to the App Store, one by one select each app, "buy" it, and then the system will install it? That should NOT be.

-----
No it should not be, but if you didn't sync and transfer them to iTunes on a regular basis or at all, then you are going to have to download them again.

With the iPhone plugged in, click on the name of it in the Devices list in the left hand column, then click on the Apps tab on the top (Summary, Info, Apps, Ringtones, Music, Movies, etc) - then click "Sync Apps" and check all of the apps that you want to sync then click Apply. If your apps are not in the list then you are going to have to download htem again.

-----
As I say, I've done all this and nothing happens. The apps all show up in the list on the left, all are checked, the device is there (when sync it shows am syncing mail, contacts, but nothing else), and nothing happens.

BTW, every single app was purchased (or free) through the App Store, so it should be there in iTunes - the only way to access the App Store.

Syncing contacts in Google

Apple iPhone - Syncing contacts in Google

Let me get the particulars out of the way, I have a 3Gs, and I've had MobileMe for the past year but I let my subscription expire because the only thing I was using it for was to sync contacts. To save 99 dollars (I know I can get it cheaper on Amazon) I let it expire and I moved to Google.

No problems syncing except out of 1300+ contacts I have a pesky 31 who always duplicate. How can I stop this duplication every time I sync? It is always the same 31 contacts, and I see nothing different with them as opposed to the masses.

I've figured out that I do NOT have to have the "Sync contacts with..." box checked in iTunes for the sync to occur, I thought that was causing the duplication but its not.

While I'm talking about contacts, on the phone itself, under groups, I have an absolute mess I would love to clean up. Under "All contacts", the total number of contacts has blossomed to 4000+ and I don't understand why it grows exponentially. I have slightly less, around 3600. under the "All on My iPhone" category and the true number of contacts +/- the 31 duplicates under my Google e-mail address. How do I get them all to have the correct number of contacts?

Its not a big deal, as I leave it to my Google email address, but I'm in the cleaning/neat/tidy up mode and this is beginning to bother me.

Iphone Syncing

For duplicates, go to Google and clear duplicates from there. Now sync and enjoy.

-----
Google has very advanced and EASY duplicate elimination and merge for contacts with same name but difference info, IE one has phone #, another has e-mail it will merge them together - saves me hours of work.

-----
Humm... maybe I'm not explaining this right. Of course I've done what Google offers me to do. I go to More options and choose find and merge and it finds the same 31 records and merges them when I tell it to. I'm good until the next time I plug up my phone and then the 31 records come back again and I find and merge again.

Meanwhile the other categories grow exponentially.

So any other suggestions besides using what Google offers me? Which works... but only temporarily. Seems like there is some setting on the phone itself which is causing these same 31 records to duplicate time and time again.

Should I delete them permanently and re-enter them?

Is there a way to delete the other categories on my phone besides deleting every contact singularly? 4000+ records to delete one at a time isn't pleasurable.

-----
Perhaps those contacts are still on your phone. That's why

Which contacts, the 31 duplicates that Google finds, or the exponential number of contacts the 4000? I only have a true contact count of 1300...

You need to check all google contacts. In google it may appear under "other contacts". Make sure after removing duplicates once you make sure there are no more and also refresh the screen.

-----
I do that every time I sync - thus the reason I know its the same 31 that are duplicates. You can't clear duplicates in Google, all you can do is find and merge them, but the same 31 are there EVERY time.

-----
In this case, I think you have contacts in your iPhone e Google. You need erase the your iPhone contacts, after to sync with the Google. Your iPhone Contacts might be empty.

-----
It could also be displaying two contacts on your iphone? How many email accounts do you have to have contacts sync to?

I have 2 gmail account and I have one to sync my contacts and the other to sync my calendar.

-----
Use a single account to sync contacts and calenders.

-----
I only have one gmail account. The calendar works perfectly, just this hitch with the contacts.

-----
Oh wow. I have to say that I was frustrated when this happened to me as well. Up to a point I did everything I could and register another account to see where the problem was. This fixed the problem but I didn't want to use a new account so I went back to my old account after I deleted all from gmail and basically start over.

Organize iTunes albums

Apple iPhone iTunes - Organize iTunes albums

How do you organize your albums in iTunes so that albums that are compilations of different artists do not show up as seperate albums? Trying to put some Christmas music on my nephews soon to be 3G and when you hold the phone in landscape mode to see all the album covers this keeps happening and is a pain!

iPhone iTunes
Rihanna a girl like me apple iphone album
Select them all - right click - get Info - check "Part of a compilation"

-----
I've been wondering for quite a while what a "compilation" really is in iTunes. Can anyone tell me?

-----
"A *compilation album* is an album (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Album) (
music (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music) or
spoken-word(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spoken-word))
featuring tracks from either a single or multiple recording
artists(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recording_artists),
often culled from a variety of sources (such as studio
albums(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Studio_albums),
live albums (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_album),
singles(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singles_%28music%29),
demos (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demo_%28music%29) and
outtakes(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outtake).)

The tracks are usually collected according to a common characteristic, such as popularity, genre, source or subject matter. "

Basically it is a "best of" album, like "Best of the 80s" where you have say 2-15 tracks from different artists that have already appeared on other albums but are compiled on a new album - typically if you just add them to iTunes and let it sort / albumize them they will be sorted by the artist then album & not be on a single compiled album so you have to manually override iTunes to tell it that those tracks are a compilation album & should be sorted as such.

-----
If these are commercial compilations, then it is highly likely that they have been correctly identified in Gracenote as compilations.

Even the monthly compilation CDs that come with 'Uncut' magazine are correctly flagged in this way.

I would simply describe them as being by a number of artists, so they do not fit in the Music > Artist > Album structure and instead should go in Music > Compilations > Album.

A "best of" by a single artist/band might be a compilation in the usual sense but not in terms of the iTunes structure.

-----
A compilation in iTunes is meant as an album with tracks from multiple singers.

-----
In the Info for the tracks, enable the option "Part of a compilation". This setting is in a different place depending on whether you're editing a single track or multiple tracks at once.

Text message weirdness

Apple iPhone Email - text message weirdness

Something weird started happening this morning. When I get a text message and I do the swipe of the bar to see the text message ,now all the sudden the entire keyboard pops up and its hard to read the text message.

This never happened before.

Is there a setting or something for this?

Try going to one of your other text partners, then back to the original one.

I have found that if I have been entering a text message, the keyboard will stay put until I go to another person's "screen".

Game Center

Apple iPhone iTunes - Game Center

When you go to the itunes store and click on the new game center logo, it tells you to click on and download any one of the games to play along with others.

I downloaded one but it is not in game center.

Is there a trick to this?

I think you have to actually play the game first. That's what I found out tinkering with it.

Export library to csv?

Apple iPhone iTunes - Export library to csv?

Does anyone know how I can get a csv version of my iTunes music library? I want to import the library list into another application.

I tried exporting to an xml file and using MS Excel to convert it, but Excel was unable to open the xml.

In your Itunes screen, under music (or what ever), make sure view options are showing the fields you want to export.

Select all, copy, then paste into excel.

Updating Photo Library

Apple iPhone - Updating Photo Library Problem?

I'm not sure what happened but tonight I tapped the camera icon and it said something about updating photo library.......it took forever which was upsetting because I needed to use my camera. But even MORE upsetting is that now I have lost MONTHS of photos!! Does ANYONE have ANY idea what happened and how to get my photos back?!?!?

iPhone Photography

There are a number of things about this scenario I don't understand, but the most prominent is why someone would keep months of photos, NOT BACKED UP, exclusively on their iPhone.

-----
..apparently this is common...both on the phone and on a regular digital....

Anyway....Are you sure your photos never went on the computer? Did you sync your phone to the computer?

Before turning the iphone off...i'd take it in to an apple store...

Anywhoo....I'm hoping this works out for you!

-----
I feel sure it *is* common; however, that fact does not stop me from always being surprised.
