Apple iOS 4.2 update for iPad page goes live

Apple iPhone - Apple iOS 4.2 update for iPad page goes live

Apple has now put up a page on their site dedicated to iOS 4.2. Some of the new features this firmware update brings to the Apple iPad include multitasking

Using Iphone with other service providers

Apple iPhone - Using Iphone with other service providers

I seem to remember reading that once the initial contract was fulfilled the Iphone was unlocked and could be used with other service providers. Is this true?

iPhone Providers
alg girl apple iphone provider
Yes. You can have AT&T to unlock it once your contract is up

-----
Do what? I've heard of carriers outside the US offering official unlock on the iPhone once the contract is up, but AT&T here in the US does not.

-----
The phone is yours but you still have to get it unlocked. Check with your provider to see if they charge for that as it varies.

-----
I think you should be able to do so, considering I had my iPhone unlocked by my service provider which is o2 (uk) and this was done while my contract is still running and not running out until December.

If you are a uk user on u2 I can find the link for you and post it here do you to follow.

Also, I don't know of any uk provider that unlocks your iPhone for you apart from o2 in the uk.

Photos on iPhone 4

Apple iPhone - Photos on iPhone.

Has anyone had success with using a USB cable to transfer pictures from Your iPhone 4 to a photo machine at say Wal-Mart.

I receive some great pic on my iPhone I would like to have printed. I usually have to go home and down Load the pix from my Desktop to a USB memory chip and then go back To Wal-Mart to get them printed !

iphone photography
girl photo on apple iphone
If the machines work on digital cameras there is no reason it wouldn't work on iPhone.

-----
Unless a new feature of iOS4 is the ability to use it as a flash drive, then this is probably not possible natively. I know there are apps that let you kinda-sorta do that via WiFi, maybe by now there's one that works via USB? But if there is, its data store is likely segregated away from the device's main storage.

-----
When you plug an iPhone (and assuming the upcoming iPod touch) into any computer it identifies itself just like a digital camera does, it works fine when I plug it into my DVD player (which supports Digital Camera (DCIM) photo playback) so it should .

-----
What happens when you plug it into a computer that does not have iTunes (and the iPhone drivers) installed?

-----
Just tried it and it still shows up as a camera (Windows XP Pro - Camera Import window pops up).

-----
It mounts as a camera and you can get to pics in the Camera Roll. At least pre-Win7. It may work on Win7, but I've only got one Win7 machine to test with and it doesn't work. Worked great on my WinXP machine though.

error message for back up

Apple iPhone iTunes - Error Message for back up

For the past week I have been getting the same error message. It looks like it syncs ok but it can't create a backup. The error message is: "ITunes could not back up the Iphone....because a session could not be started with the IPhone."

I have a 3G with OS 4.0.2 but the problem started while I had the previous OS.

iPhone iTunes

I had gotten this message a couple of times when I had a lot of trouble properly syncing. I would get a lot of freezes(due to my antivirus and firewall programs). What used to work for me was deleting the old backup (or cutting and pasting it somewhere else just in case) and then syncing. A new backup will be made. My firewall was somehow corrupting a file or two in the backup so it couldn't be written over.

Your backup ( if using windows vista or 7) is in user/app data/ roaming/ apple
computer/ mobilesync/ backup.

-----
Also I forgot - try completely rebooting your phone by holding the home button and power button down until the apple logo shows. It frees up memory and resets things. ( without resetting any of your personal settings).

Is there any reason I shouldn't download the latest iTunes V10?

I have an iPhone 4.

No

iTunes 10 Loses Ringtone Creator

Apple iPhone - iTunes 10 Loses Ringtone Creator

iTunes 10 no longer has the tool that lets users create custom ringtones. Can't say we are very disappointed. The tool wasn't all the great, it cost 99-cents a ringtone and it seemed to have far too many limitations. Well, we are being nice...it stank.

Whatever their reasons, whether it was actually because the software was very limited, or because of some other idea from Cupertino, it's gone. Luckily, there is no need to worry, friends.

iTunes 10

We have a far better solution. It's free, it lets you convert just about any file you want (even YouTube videos) into a ringtone. No software to install---it's all browser-based.

We go with Audiko, which we've written about several times in the past. So far, it's the best tool we've found for creating custom ringtones for the iPhone.

We even have a tutorial that tells you exactly how to create your own ringtones on the website.

-----
What about if you have garage band. Can you create a ringtone that way ?

-----
The simplest iTunes method of creating ringtones from your ripped music, as described by some websites for several years, still works with iTunes 10.

1. If you don't use the default import encoder, change Preferences > General > Import Settings > Import Using to AAC Encoder.

2. Choose your track and play it to decide the start and stop times. The duration can be anything up to 40 seconds.

3. Right-click > Get Info > Options to change the Start and Stop times to what you decided in (2). You can be precise to 0.001 secs if you want. Play this to make sure you've got what you want.

4. Right-click > Create AAC Version. This creates an edited version containing only what's between the Start and Stop times.

5. Right-click > Get Info > Summary to find the location of the edited version (not really necessary as it will be exactly adjacent to the original track in the iTunes Media > Music > Artist > Album folder).

6. Delete the edited version from iTunes but keep the file.

7. Navigate to the file using Finder or Windows Explorer and change the filename extension from m4a to m4r.

8. Either double-click the m4r file or iTunes > File > Add to Library to add it back to iTunes. It will go into Ringtones, not Music, and the file will move to the Ringtones folder.

9. Get Info > Options on the original track to change the Start and Stop times back to the defaults. You can do this at any point after (4).

10. Repeat 2-9 for your other ringtones.

11. Sync the phone to transfer your ringtones.

12. If you don't use the default import encoder, change Preferences > General > Import Settings > Import Using back to your usual one.

That looks like a lot of steps but it is really easy.

-----
I've been using iPhoneRing ToneMaker. It's works. It's easy. It runs on my Win7 Professional laptop. I think it was free, but don't really remember.

It makes the ringtone from any music file and then loads it into iTunes.

Completely new to iPhone

Apple iPhone - Completely new to iPhone

Please forgive me if this is a really stupid question, but I am wondering if there is anyway to get WIFI through my home network, even though I am using a wired modem for my Cable Internet connection.

I am on a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Mac with Airport card installed.

iPhone WiFi
girl on laptop on boat apple iphone wifi
buy an airport extreme or express. run the cable out of the modem and into it. then you will have WIFI

-----
There are much cheaper WiFi routers than Apple¹s, like D-Link or Linksys. I am guessing the Airport card is Œn¹ speed (the fastest), if so just make sure you buy an Œn¹ capable router.

-----
Just buy a airport extreme and connect it to the Ethernet port out of the cable modem. I do the same with a Adam modem

-----
Absolutely, I do. None of my computers are connected to my cable modem by wire. EVERYTHING in the house, at least a dozen devices, is connect by Wi Fi

-----
I'm using Windows & have DSL internet -- I plugged my wireless router (rather than my computer) into the DSL modem (which is wired to the phone access point) & run my various devices off the wireless network (computers, iToys....)

-----
Get a WLAN (WiFi) router.

-----
Thank you all for your input. I should have been more clear with my question.

My husband wants as little WiFi as possible, and prefers a hardwired router to minimize EMF exposure. I want WiFi for the iPhone. Is there a way to get the WiFi for the iPhone while still using the hardwired router for our computer network?

Is there a router that has the option of hardwire + WiFi and the ability to switch between the two, so that I could turn the WiFi on and off at will?

-----
All modern wifi routers include a (wired) ethernet switch *as well as* a wifi base station. You can switch off the wifi when not required but it might be tedious. Are you prepared to go into the router's admin, using a computer connected via ethernet, *every* time you want to use the iPhone, then again when you stop using it?

-----
Sorry I'm chiming in late here. Since the Mac isn't using its airport to receive wifi, you could have it send a wifi signal that your iPhone can pick up. Then it would be easier to turn Airport off and on in the Menu Bar. You already have everything you need to try it.

-----
That turns off the WiFi unit in the Mac, not the WiFi base station. Her husband want to minimize RF radiation (transmission), and wants to turn off the base station when not used.

I agree that the amount of RF radiation is negligible, but I'm not the one that needs to be convinced.

-----
YEs. The Airports, and most WLAN routers from Cisco, Linsys, Netgear, etc, do both WiFi and wired LAN.

Not as a simple switch option. Some may have a control to turn the WiFi on/off, but it would be really annoying to have to go into the config of the router every single time.

Your husband is being paranoid. The RF output is too low to be of a concern, unless he's going to mount it on his head and leave it there for years on end.

-----
Yes, most WiFi routers have one or more ethernet (rj-45) sockets. You can plug in as many direct connected devices as there are sockets (many have 4) and have multiple WiFi devices (or just one) at the same time.

Depending on what 'at will' means, yes you can turn the WiFi on and off. It's probably not one click, at least not on the three or four WiFi routers I've worked with. But at most a few clicks, to turn off wifi (while continuing wired connections.)

Music sound quality

Apple iPhone iPod - Music sound quality

I'm a recent convert to iPhone, and not necessarily in the know yet about the common complaints so apologies if this topic/question has been beaten to death already.

I'm disappointed in the quality of the sound when playing music. The iPod function doesn't sound anywhere approaching as good as my iPod classic, which blew me away when I first got it. Then today I tried listening to a streaming radio station and the quality is so poor it puts me in mind of the (really) old days of the tinny single speaker clock radios of my youth.

Am I expecting too much? Is there a setting on the device that will improve the sound quality? I've messed with the equalizer but that doesn't seem to affect the sound quality in the least. Is my experience simply a function of the media form?

I'm using an iPhone 4 through the tape deck of the JBL sound system of my car. The comparison to the iPod classic is made using the same equipment.

iPhone iPod
Girl apple iphone ipod
You know that was also my problem while ago, as i am always after to the quality of sound, well... good thing i find it that could lessen my disappointments...

On your "HOme" screen, go to "Setting icon" expand it, and go to "EQ" from that, select your type of sounds... i prefer "R & B" for my listening type. Hope this will help you somehow...

-----
My old iPhone 3G sounded about as good to me as my iPod Classic does. Trick one is to use good earbuds, and not the crap that comes with.

-----
I think she's using the headphone socket and should try a dock connecter (giving line level output) instead.

-----
I think she's using the headphone socket and should try a dock connector (giving line level output) instead.

Unless things have changed in iPhone 4 compared to 3G, the phone part does not route out through the Dock. If she's using a BT solution, that won't matter. But if she's using a phone adapter cord between the iPhone and the car interface it does.

For the record, I ran my iPhone 3G through a Shure phone-adapter cord to an extension and then into an add-on AUX input to the car factory stereo and got quite acceptable audio results. I did not notice any change in quality when I switched back to my iPod Classic and ran the audio out through the dock connector to the same AUX input. (I'll see if there is any noticeable difference with the iPod Touch I'm about to get.)

My car isn't as quite on the inside as it used to be, but it has a very good (Bose) stereo.

-----
After reading this thread on sound quality, I went to my car, hooked up my iPhone 4 via cassette player to cars speakers and started playing some music. I have to say the sound quality really is bad. I tried fiddling with the EQ on my iPhones settings and it made absolutely NO DIFFERENCE which preset I choose.

Does anyone else have this problem? If I choose heavy bass, it sounds the same as reduced bass or classical or R&B,etc... I'm wondering If one of the software updates actually messed up the iPhone's EQ. Someone else please try it and let me know if they can hear a difference among the different eq presets.

-----
Has anyone done this using both the headphone socket and a dock connector? It would be interesting to compare the 2.

Apps 4 Apple Component Video cables

Apple iPhone - What apps will work with the Apple Component Video cables ?????

I plan to order the Apple Component Video cables so I can watch the Netflix apps movies on my TV. I know this app works with the cables but what else does?

The few apps I know of are:

Netflix
YouTube
included video app

but what else ?

iPhone Apps
Girl apple iphone apps
My cables finally came and even though they were a bit pricey, I am glad I bought them. I also found an iPad browser that outputs the webpages to your screen but other than that there are really very few apps that will output to your TV.

The video thru the Netflix app was very good, not dvd quality, but I watched a couple shows last night and it was fine.

Clips thru YouTube were not as good but still good enough and showing photo slideshows on the TV might be the best quality image overall.

It also outputs just the audio for all apps which made playing some games a little more fun as the sound was coming out the stereo instead of the tiny iPad speaker.

Free Ringtones from Phonezoo

Apple iPhone - Free Ringtones from Phonezoo

Just wanted to let you all know in case anyone else is interested in getting free ringtones that it is possible.

As I said in my previous msg, I use the website www.phonezoo.com to download and save ringtones that I have purchased over the years. You have the ability to upload a sound file or even create your own ringtone at this website. It provides support for a variety of phones and service carriers. You create a free profile and enter your phone type, carrier, and phone number. There are several methods for downloading these tones, but evidently only one way to get them for the iPhone.

iPhone Ringtones
Girls switch off ringtones apple iphone
Here is what I did:
Selected the option to save the ringtone to my pc desktop From my desktop, I dragged the ringtone into iTunes ringtone folder I attached my cables to the computer and clicked on "Melissa's iPhone"

I then clicked on the ringtones tab when the summary page came up

I put a check mark in the "sync ringtones" box and checked "all ringtones"

Then I clicked on "sync".

Once my phone synced and it was safe to disconnect I then had my 29 custom ringtones available on my iPhone (3GS and I am have not downloaded version 10 of iTunes yet). And I didn't pay a cent to phonezoo or iTunes to get them there. Just wanted to share in case anyone else is interested in using this site. I haven't tried any other sites so I don't know if this works with all sites and ringtones or not.

-----
I just went to PhoneZoo and downloaded the "In Like Flint" ringtone. I've been wanting that for years.

One thing that everyone should be very aware of... while PhoneZoo is free, all around the window are ads that take you to "pay" sites. PhoneZoo really makes you "pay" attention to what you are doing, otherwise you'll wind-up costing yourself $9.99 for a ringtone!

I mean some of these pay-ads look like they are part of PhoneZoo's site.

Bottom line... BE CAREFUL & PAY ATTENTION - or you'll pay $$$ ! ! !

Can't make own iTunes 10 ringtones

Apple iPhone - You can't make your own ringtones in iTunes 10

Mac Life notes that Apple has removed the create your own ringtone feature from iTunes 10. The feature introduced after the launch of the original iPhone in 2007 allows users to download a song from iTunes for 99 cents and then turn it into an iPhone ringtone for 99 more cents.

iTunes 10
apple itunes 10
At a later Fall Apple music event, Apple added a new section to the iTunes store for both Mac and iOS devices that allows for the purchase of pre-cut iPhone ringtones.

It seems that Apple may have gotten a bit greedy and wants you to go for the pricier, pre-cut tones instead. They have to make up for that Apple TV price drop somewhere, right?

Picasa or some other way

Apple iPhone - Picasa or some other way

Last time I checked, to download photos on blogger by using the iPhone I had to use Picasa. I learned from someone else that once the photos are up, Picasa wants full rights to them to distribute anywhere or how they see fit as long as they wish to do so.

Since I learned that, I decided maybe I don't want to use the iPhone for posting pics to my blog. So far, Picasa is the only way I'm able to transfer over pics to my blog from the iPhone directly without emailing or syncing the pics to my PC first.

Does anyone else know of a way? I have no trouble with Facebook pics going over, but the blogger ones become little boxes without an app.

iPhone iPad
business apple iphone photos
Pixelpipe maybe? It supports a boatload of upload destinations. I use it for Facebook, twitter, and I have a few FTP sites that auto generate galleries with PHP code I wrote. Maybe it supports your blog software.

-----
There is an app for iPad ($2.99) in app store that allows posting to several blog platforms and allows posting video, photos through several servers: Flickr, Picasa or their BlogPress platform.

I haven't tried it, but it looks interesting. Wonder if anyone is using this one? Says it is also compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch

Not sure if this would meet your requirements, but I thought that any photo you posted via computer to Blogger, went to Picasa or maybe that is my default photo server.

It seems they used to have a direct email address you could sent photos, I haven't tried that either, but might be worth looking on the Blogger Help site or googling it.

Will I have the same features with Google as I do with Mobile Me
or will I be giving up something to save $100 per year?

-----
MobileMe has a ton of features if you use a Mac and/or multiple iOS devices (iPhones, iPods, iPads, etc). As far as the photo sharing, storage, mail, calendar, contacts, etc - all of that can be duplicated with Google (Picasa, GMail, GCal, GContacts, can buy storage at 20GB for $5 per year) - the main thing you will be losing is Find My iPhone/iPod/iPad which can be worth it if you misplace your devices.

Also, Amazon sells discounted MobileMe subscriptions at ~79/year and/or you could always split a 'family' plan from Amazon with 4 other people.

That being said, YES Google can do the basics and do them very well for free and if you don't have a Mac will save you the cost of MMe.

-----
I wanted to share calendars and contacts between my wife and me. MobileMe worked fine, by logging my wife's phone into my account for the calendar and contacts. Only problem was that I couldn't use the "find my iPhone" feature of MobileMe on her phone since it was logged into my account. So we now share a Google calendar, but from what I understand, we can only share contacts on Google with a "commercial" account ($).

I love Netflix!!!

apple iphone - I love Netflix!!!

Recently I downloaded the Netflix app and its awesome. I was able to watch The Proposal from my bed and it streamed so well. I started out with 66 percent available battery life and was able to watch the whole movie. By the end it was only down to 42 percent.

I also watch Netflix through the Wii and of course renting movies...I think they are ingenious for coming up with all the various choices.

iphone netflix
Netflix apple iphone
I agree!! It's fantastic! I enjoy Netflix on my iPhone and iPad both. I just wish that more movies on DVD were available for instant play; hopefully, they will be in the future.

-----

I assume you were streaming over WiFi. We're you on a iPhone 4 or 3GS?

I have used it several times over WiFi on a 3GS, but did not check the battery usage, but it seems ok.

The streaming on the phone has been good, but I have had one instance where the video flickered and went to black, but the same thing has happened to me while streaming over cable to my Mac. I'm guessing the NetFlix servers are getting hammered since the release of the iPhone version of the app.

-----
I used to use Netflix. How does it mature now? I'm planning to reinstate my subscription, but is there a way to just use netflix for ipad without renting the physical dvd/bd? Sometimes I'm out of the country half a year at a time.

-----
Don't know if you can receive over the air (wifi 3G) Netflix if overseas. Would guess not.

My opinion, at $9.99+ tax per month the over the air option is a winner without the mailed DVDs. But not all movies, shows, are available via streaming.

In your case, remember Netflix can be started and stopped for any month.Easy.

Also possible, don't sign up for any DVDs to be sent or delete them when it comes time to go overseas and stop your account.

-----
For what it's worth I am impressed with Hulu Plus which I get on both my iPhone and iPad. The iPad really lends itself to this type of App.

-----
Go for the $9 plan and don't order and movies. You can not put the plan on hold because you then can not stream movies.

I don't know how well streaming movies overseas will work.

-----
Yes, and the online only is a cheaper price. When you sign up you'll have the option to pick your plan - and online only is one of them.

-----
There should be more instant play shows and movies but so far on my iPad, even with just 3G, the shows look nice.

Over 3G I do experience stoppages every now and then but usually it will restart automatically in a few seconds. Still I am very pleased.

Apple’s iPod-athon

Apple iPhone - Additional notes from Apple’s iPod-athon

It is late in the UK, I've put stuff together here and here. There's a few facts which might be of interest to some readers, so I thought I'd take a moment to put them down.

Apple TV
TV apple iphone ipod athon
The Apple TV runs an A4 processor

OK, as I expected international audiences lucked out on the Apple TV. We have no on device purchases (so no random podcasts, either), and without access to $0.99 show rentals the product loses a lot of its pitch for international audiences. This is compensated slightly by Apple's move to cut the price and to make set-up of new computers from which to stream content much, much easier you don't need to log in or use code numbers anymore.

A bloke from Apple confirmed the Apple TV is powered by an A4 chip. So while I can see the system doesn't run apps yet (and lack of a drive makes this challenging) I can't see any theoretical reason the device couldn't in future run apps in some way, though perhaps only streamed versions of video games controlled and hosted on an iPad. Well, so I wish, anyway.

I also predict there will be demand in future to separate audio from video streams. This will let people play their audio via the AirPort Express on their huge phat music system while watching the movie on their gazillion-inch Apple-branded TV (did I get ahead of myself there?).

There's no video in the iPod nano

Yeah, you read that right that small screen won't let you watch the tiniest video in the world. And there's no camera also. Never mind thought, it is a really nice little device. And if all you want is music the iPod shuffle is pretty good, too.

The iPod classic

Speaking to my contacts I got no sense that the iPod classic is on its way to the great product graveyard in the sky. I suspect Apple will keep selling them until people stop buying them. I do think a capacity upgrade would be nice, particularly for those who like to use their classic to play lossless audio files. The product isn't an A-lister anymore, but it is respected as a veteran product which opened a new world for AAPL. And it still sells.

Apple v MySpace and Facebook

Apple's new social network for music *as Steve Jobs called it several times* is not just what it says. It is a starting point.

Think about how Apple gets into any new industry. It puts together a simple concept. tests it and makes it popular, then extends it incrementally. This is why I still believe the Apple TV will one day run apps, and also why I believe Apple's taking a new initiative to get into social networking. Particularly now it has iAds and valuable location-based data to use, and is developing understanding of the value of that.

This is a nice and simple beginning. Can't wait to see the Lady GaGa ad for it at some point in future.

Baffle 'em with B.S.

Apple always offers up a few interesting statistics at the beginning of these events. Many of us Mac scribblers gloss over these while we wait for the meat. It is only weeks later that we find we need them and no one has written them down. Here's what we learned in the first few minutes:

Apple retail

- Apple has 300 stores, Covent Garden, London was its 300th store
- Over a million people visit these retail stores some days in every month.
- Apple runs 80,000 one-on-one sessions per week in stores iOS 4
- iOS 4.1 update fixes the Proximity bug
- 120 million iOS devices have shipped since one year ago that's 230,000 iOS devices per day.
- 25,000 iPad apps
- HDR photos are based on algorithmic treatment taken from three images, it pulls out enhanced detail by doing this.
- iOS 4.1 is for iPhone and the iPod touch. Available next week.
- iOS 4.2 comes a little later this year Apple has sold 275 million iPods since 2001. (iPhone is already catching up. I'm sure it must be time for one of those info-graphics, but that's beyond the call at midnight).

I'm sure some of these notes will help somebody. On a lean day, some of these are stories in themselves. (Incidentally, in previous years Apple has hosted a nice little party for Europe's tech hacks. This year it didn't that's fine, but it underlines the new austere age we're in. Sigh).

iTunes 10 is live, iPod Classic is dead...

Apple iPhone - iTunes 10 is live, iPod Classic is dead...

Some notes:
- iTunes 10 is live.

- iPod Classic is dead. RIP. It is all streaming anymore anyway. Update: Maybe not. Still, no mention at the event doesn't bode well long term. Think more like we made enough to last a few more months.

- iPod nano is hella small but also loses the camera which was nice on a device that small. Even Steve said people would wear them as a watch, so I get a star. Speaking of Stars, holy cow! Mr. Nano mockup gets a galaxy of stars.

- AppleTV is awesome but maybe the coolest part is the Airport Express Video functionality. Carrying around media on iPads, iPhones and iPods, it will be pretty cool to be able to shoot that right over to the TV.

Renting movies and TV shows does two things. It makes cable obsolete. It also means that TV shows now are a buck a pop or more. If you watch 10 shows (Fox and ABC) a week, that is $40. Not a bad tradeoff at that frequency. $4.99 for first run movies is also OK, but I still like buying BlueRay for the good stuff. Also, what hardware/OS is AppleTV running? At that size, it is a variant of iOS on A4 most likely. At $99, this will no longer be a hobby.

1. ITunes 10 is not live. Site still saying "Coming Soon"

2. Cable is most certainly not obsolete. Several folks in a household and several TVs and its most certainly not going to be 10 shows a week, more like 10 per person. Also my cable includes several movie channels ALSO I can DVR and watch anything , anytime I want, no 48 hour restriction My Cable gives me over 200 channel choices, DVR , several movie channels on a unlimited number of TVs all for less than $100 per month. Apple TV is sorta neat but its certainly not going to replace Cable…(Oh and what about local programming, local news??????)

-----
It would be cool if the AppleTV would pluck the digital channels out of the air to provide the local channels.

-----
I assume iTunes 10 is for the new ATV, which doesn't go on sale until the end of the month.

-----
iTunes 10 is for iOS 4.1, iOS 4.2 (iPad/November), new "Ping" social network, fixes to lots of problems and probably code for ATV but it is out now and installed on all machines and finally fixed the problem of my iPhone taking forever to sync.

iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes

Apple iPhone iTunes - iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes

I have my iTunes library on a very slow old PC, but it still works if I give it time.

Today, however, when I plugged my iPhone into the computer, the iTunes library doesn't show the iPhone.

I am using a 3Gs iPhone, and it has the iPhone 4 operating system on it. in case that is of interest.

I have looked around in iTunes and iPhone help. Haven't figured it out.

Picasa picked up the iPhone and imported the photos from it. So the computer is recognizing the iPhone. Just iTunes isn't

There is a minimum version iTunes that iOS 4 will work with. I can not seem to find that minimum for either the Mac OS or Windows. You said you are using an old PC, what version of iTunes are you using?

If it has worked in the past and you have not updated anything recently then it could be either the cable was not plugged in correctly or some 3rd party cables do not work properly. Have you checked the USB port with another device or cable?

To your earlier question, about slowness. It makes a big difference whether you have a 3G or 3GS. It is generally not recommended to update a 3G, at least not until Apple fixes a few things. If you are having a speed problem with your 3GS you can google for solutions or read back in the archives of this list.

"Square Trade" warranty - Legit? Scam?

Apple iPhone "Square Trade" warranty - Legit? Scam? Difficult to get your phone

Does anyone know how good the "Square Trade" warranty is?

Is it a scam?

Do they make it really difficult to get your phone fixed?

See below for cut-and-paste from an ad:

SquareTrade iPhone 2-Year Warranty for $99.
Unlike AppleCare, SquareTrade's extended warranty also includes drop and spill protection.

I have it on my sons pantech matrix. He's had to have it fixed twice at no cost to me(except for shipping it to the repair facility). I would highly recommend them.

-----
I have used them for another phone. I also have their warranty on my laptop but haven't had to use it, thank goodness. With the phone I had (a treo), they gave me my full purchase price back because it was an older phone.

They've always been courteous and easy to deal with.
