Successful update 3GS to 4.1

Apple iPhone Syncing - Successful update 3GS to 4.1

Again with antivirus and firewall turned off I was able to seamlessly update my 3GS to 4.1. It took approximately 20 minutes. No loss of data or settings. And thankfully no freezes or crashes of the computer or the phone.

So if anyone is having strange issues with their iPhone sync through a windows vista computer try closing your security during the update (of course shut off your internet connection during syncing to prevent evil things).

Can't backup administrator's phone

Apple iPhone iTunes - Can't backup administrator's phone

I got the above message after trying to update my 4. It seemed to stop in the middle of the update. Then it said, "Itunes could not back up iphone administrator's phone because a session could not be started with the iphone." Then it said it wouldn't back up because there was a session in progress. Then it didn't recognize my phone. So I restored. But I still kept getting the same message. So I "safely removed hardware" and tried to work some of my apps -- some silly games thing showed up, my Notes doesn't work, my calendar is totally empty. Bummer, it was the only place I kept appointments -- I know, probably crazy, but then, I was used to a Blackberry.

This phone is lot of fun, but the Blackberry never gave me a moment's problem.

Well, I'm restoring again. Let's see if it will work this time.
Is there anything else I should be doing?
Is there any way to get help with issues such as these?

After you do a restore you need to perform a sync to get all of your data back on the phone.

-----
Unfortunately, sync is what it wouldn't do. I shut the whole thing down, then came back later and started all over, and this time it seemed to work. It didn't give me my new apps, though. But I got them back, also. Thanks for your suggestion.

iPhone 4 Antenna Issue Even Smaller...

Apple iPhone - Apple Says iPhone 4 Antenna Issue 'Even Smaller Than We Originally Thought'

Remember Antennagate? You probably do, but no one seems to talk about it anymore. Since Apple held a press conference to address the iPhone 4's attenuation issues in July, undoubtedly millions more units have been sold. More units, more problems, right? Maybe not.

iPhone 4 antenna
Solved Problem apple iphone antenna
'We now know that the iPhone 4 antenna attenuation issue is even smaller than we originally thought,' Apple says in a statement on their site today announcing a formal end to the iPhone 4 Case Program. That program, which gave a free case to any iPhone 4 owner that requested one (or gave a refund to those who bought one), will formally end on September 30. Though Apple does note that any user who is still experiencing a problem can call AppleCare to request a free bumper (and one would have to assume they'll get one).

So if you do feel like you want a free case for the iPhone, get your order in fast. The directions for that are still on the site. They do note that if you bought your iPhone 4 before July 23, you would have had to apply by August 22 for the case ' otherwise you have to apply within 30 days of the purchase. But again, for this formal program, the free bumpers will stopped being handled through Apple's website (and iPhone app) for people who buy iPhone 4s after September 30.

Apple also notes that for units sold after September 30, they'll be returning to their normal returns policy.

Apple is not sharing any specific statistics on the antenna issue, but during the July conference, CEO Steve Jobs noted that only a half of one percent of iPhone 4 owners had called Apple Care to complain about the issue. He also said that the return rate for the iPhone 4 was much lower than the iPhone 3GS at 1.7 percent. But he did note that the dropped call rate for the new device was slightly higher ' by less than one more call per one hundred calls. At the time, he indicated that the iPhone 4 case may correct that.

If Apple is now saying the problem is 'even smaller than we originally thought,' one has to assume that some or all of those numbers have actually decreased. But specifically, Apple is only saying is that, 'a small percentage of iPhone 4 users need a case.'

My experience remains the same. As I've noted, the issue is real, but it's not really an issue. I've now been carrying around the iPhone 4 for about three months, AT&T is still awful in San Francisco, but the iPhone 4 actually seems to work a bit better than the iPhone 3GS did.

The antenna issue hasn't hampered my daily use of the phone at all ' and I don't use a case.

Some will claim that's the fanboy in me talking ' but if a device is broken, I'm not going to use it. That's just reality. And the reality is that it's not broken. Like so many things, this issue was overblown.

Mine went away once I put a case on it. In Places in Houston I still do get more dropped call on the iPhone 4 than I did on any other iPhone.

I think, one of the reason is that apple demonstrated that the other phones are having similar issues.

That is the reason why we don't hear as much.

Google Voice Is Back In Town?

Apple iPhone App - Google Voice Is Back In Town?

Following the recent revisions made to Apple's App Store approval process, the developer of a Google Voice iPhone app has received confirmation from Apple that his application will 'most likely' return to the App Store once it has been resubmitted.

As AppleInsider reports, iOS developer Shane Kovacs told the world:

iPhone Apps
Wallpaper Generic Pic Rex girl for apple iphone apps
Good news: I did get confirmation back from Apple that it will most likely get back in once I resubmit.

This is seemingly due to the fact that GV Mobile (Kovacs' app) complies with all 100+ of Apple's new guidelines. If you're curious as to what these are, be sure to check out our detailed annotation of the changes made to the App Store approval process.

Google Voice itself has caused something of a stir in the App Store since its development. In July 2009, third-party GV-enabled applications (including Kovacs') were kicked out of the App Store in a move that prompted the FCC to investigate.

Since then, Kovacs made his GV Mobile app available in Cydia (which has since become the home of Apple-rejected iDevice applications).

However, this new turn of events seems to point towards a positive future for iOS developers. We've all heard the many horror stories of iDevice app rejections with some sounding sillier than others. Yet, Apple's new guidelines (and the reintegration of previously banned apps) should produce a App Store for all.

HDR Pictures

Aplle iPhone - HDR Pictures

When you take a picture with HDR on you get two pictures,,This may seem strange but I am having trouble telling which one is the HDR picture.

Is there any way to tell which one is which?

iPhone HDR
Before and after Apple iPhone HDR
It says "HDR" on it right under the "Camera Roll" / back button it is sort of see through but it does say HDR in top left corner and is always the 2nd of the two...

-----
The HDR photo says HDR in the upper left corner.

-----
So far not telling to much of a difference.

-----
BTW, you can go to Settings --> Photos, and set it to keep or remove the Normal

Photo and only keep the HDR version.

-----
HDR (High Dynamic Range) takes three snapshots. Underexposed, "properly" exposed (normal), and overexposed. It then combines these three to mute out (provide detail) high whites and darks to give you a better exposure overall.

Now, this may or may not be desirable. Typically, HDR photos as taken on an iPhone aren't as soft (good shadow to emphasize something) and warm (darker colors).

Where HDR shines is taking a pic of something in harsh light or where there are a lot of shadow areas (not black holes, just shadowy). If you want to compare "normal" to HDR, take a picture from a few different angles of a bookcase with lots of items on it. In the normal pictures, you'll notice a difficulty in determining color in shadow (like the spine of a book) or the undersides of shelves cloaked in shadow. In the HDR pic, you'll be able to determine color much better and while there will still be some shadow, it won't be as opaque as the normal picture and you'll be able to see detail that's not visible in the normal pic.

It's not magic. HDR isn't going to turn all your photos into National Geographic material. For that, you'll need to practice and learn how to take good pics. For those who are photographers, sorry for all the lay terms. I'm not a photographer. I usually take good pics and sometimes I get lucky and take a phenomenal pic, but I'm definitely not a photographer by any stretch of the imagination.

Just FYI too, you can't have HDR on and flash on at the same time.
Enabling one will disable the other. FYI two, if at the top it says HDR On, then it means HDR is On. You'll know it's on because after taking the pic it'll say saving HDR.

My personal preference is not to turn off the setting to save the normal pic and the HDR pic as it gives me the option later to choose which I like best. Slows things down while taking pics as it has to save both, but I can live with that.

-----
HDR = High Dynamic Range. It's used when there is more dynamic lighting range to the scene than the camera can handle with one image. So you (or the camera) take two or more images and then combine them, keeping the best exposed parts of each eliminating the blown highlights and lost shadows.

Depending on the desired effect and quality of the merge, the end result can be anywhere from realistic looking "can't tell the difference" to "artsy".

-----
Which ever is better quality get that one.

Has anyone else experienced their device just going dark and dead for no apparent reason, and I mean permanently? The iPhone 4 I just bought last month was fine last night and now it's just dark like the battery is dead today but it doesn't come back up , not when I plug it in, or when I try to reboot with the home and start button .

There is a double case on it and I don't know of any bumps or spills on the device. There was a droppage that happened yesterday but iPhone worked fine afterwards.

What do you list experts think?

I humbly thank everyone for their replies..
The home button and the top right button held down for 10 long seconds restored the iPhone4 to full functionality. I don't know how or why it turned off like that, but around here we have a saying; If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

iOS4.1 on an iPhone 3G

Apple iPhone - iOS4.1 on an iPhone 3G - Our First Hour

What can we say? Apple has come through and fixed some of the things that bothered us about iOS4. Some of you may remember a few months back when we wrote about our hands-on experience in what we called iOS4 on a 3G - Our First Hour. We said it was kind of a disappointment, and that the only thing making us even slightly interested was that it was available for free. (Note: previous iPhone OS updates cost money on any iDevice other than a phone.) Still we even went on to call it a "rare miss for Apple." Game Center was nowhere to be found, our phone was slow and stuff just didn't seem to work the way it was supposed to.

iPhone iOS
facetime tv ad commercial smile teen girl dad braces screen handheld hand fingers technology consumer electronics video call gadget commercial advertising apple iphone 4 ios4
Unfortunately, if you have an iPhone 3G, Game Center is still missing, but we've learned to live with that and moved on. Aside from that, we started having so many other issues with the system, that we totally forgot about Game Center. None of them were downright horrible, but all were annoying. Battery life started to suck, navigating the operating system was slow…the list goes on. But we're here to talk about the update, because it's a nice one.

So far things are definitely snappier. Flipping pages and opening Apps such as the Camera or Photos is a dream compared to what it was just a week ago. That's not to say it's blazing fast, but this is a 3G--we can't expect too much. We opened the default camera App, took pictures, previewed them, shared and deleted. It all seemed to work much better.

Sadly, we can't do a side-by-side so it's impossible to tell if we are just perceiving it as a better system, or if it actually is faster.

Texting seems to be much faster as well. Opening up the Messages App is smoother, and we don't get tired of waiting to scroll up and down as we search the contacts. We also noticed that the "Slide to Unlock" function works now. Okay, so we are being a bit facetious, but there were times when the slide just didn't want to move.

Other improvements we notice are that double-clicking the Home button to bring up our Favorites also seems to work a bit smoother. Before, it felt like we'd double-click, wait, double-click again…wait, then end up opening and exiting Favorites as the OS tried to figure out what the heck we were trying to do.

The Spotlight search seems better as well, and that's a great thing given how much use it gets from these thumbs.

Overall, iOS4.1 is a great update. We've said it before and we will say it again: It's what we felt iOS4 should have been. Of course things things can take time, and there is no way of knowing exactly how well something will work until it's out in the wild and being used by millions in various different scenarios.

Tune in tomorrow as we put iOS4.1 through the "regular day of use" test. We will use the software through a regular day and share how our first 24 hours with 4.1 went.

iOS 4.1 Update List

Apple iPhone - iOS 4.1 Official Update List via iSmashPhone

iOS4.1 is here. This is the operating system we wanted in when it was originally announced back in April as iPhone OS4.

We saw Apple's Tentpole features, one of which included Game Center, an App that is only today becoming available.

We've walked you through the new features in the past, but now it's time to take a look at all the official updates, straight from the update list provided by Apple upon download of the new OS:

iPhone iOS
what relation between Kim Kardashian and iPhone iOS
New Features:
Game Center (iPhone 3GS and Higher, iPod Touch 2G and Higher) - This was one of Apple's Tentpole features. Players can create an ID and join the social gaming network created by Apple. It's best described as Apple's version of Xbox LIVE or PlayStation Network. Owners of iOS devices can post their highscores, join others in games and learn about new games through their online friends. This may be one of 4.1's most welcomed features.

HDR (High Dynamic Range) Photos (iPhone 4 Only) - This was an unexpected update. News of it came from Apple's September 1st event. By turning HDR on, users are instructing the device to take three photos in rapid succession. One is underexposed, another is "normal" and a third is overexposed. The phone then combines these photos to create one image that better represents highlights and shadows. It can even be set to store the original picture as well.

Support for TV Show Rentals in iTunes - When Steve Jobs announced the new Apple TV, he also announced plans for an updated way to watch TV shows and movies. Select TV shows will now be available as 99-cent rentals, and it's said that others should follow as Apple negotiates more deals with content providers. Movies will be available day of their DVD/Blu-Ray release and will be rented as well. By the sounds of it, the service will no longer offer movies for purchase.

Upload HD Videos to YouTube and MobileMe Over Wifi - With devices that can record video at a beatiful 720p resolution, it's strange to believe that it wasn't possible at first to upload HD video via your iOS device. This eliminates the need of having to import the video to a computer, then upload.

Additional Support for AVRCP Accessories - If Game Center is the most welcomed feature, this is probably the most important feature. It's going to add capability for Bluetooth pairing with compatible devices that can serve as iPod controls for your device. Rather than having to look down at your iPhone's screen while driving, you can control it via your car's dashboard. This is a huge step towards driver safety.

FaceTime Calling Directly From Favorites - Initiate FaceTime calls directly through your Favorites. It's also possible to use a contact's email address to reach them for a FaceTime call. This is also partly a work-around because the iPod Touch will be able to make FaceTime calls, but obviously doesn't have a way of initiating the call via phone.

Bug Fixes:
Proximity Sensor Performance - Thanks to the proximity sensor fixes, iPhone users will no longer suffer accidental hangups because because their cheek touches the screen in the middle of a phone call. Because several of the phone's functions are on the touchscreen while making a call, having the proximity sensor act up can lead to anything from said hangups to accidental speakerphone or muting the call. When the issue becomes familiar, you know it's a problem. This one became all-too-common for some.

iPhone 3G Performance - Slow. Very slow. That describes iOS4 on an iPhone 3G. Though using the phone may have been barely tolerable for most users who upgraded their 3G to iOS4, some said it was an absolute nightmare. We will be posting first-hour/full day impressions on this later this week.

Nike + iPod Fixes - Users were reporting problems with Nike + iPod.

Some said that their running distances were being recorded incorrectly, others had problems calibrating the software. This update should fix those issues.

Bluetooth Improvements - Many had trouble with paired Bluetooth devices. Their headset would disconnect from the iPhone, some would be able to hear their calls perfectly, but the person on the other end wouldn't be able to make out what they were saying. To put it simply, there were various problems, and they all seemed to differ somewhat.

Those issues should be resolved with this update.

More information here: iOS4.1 New features

We are currently looking into the OS and trying to see if Apple hid anything in some of the menus. We will let you know if we run into anything interesting.

If you happen to find anything we miss, please let us know in the comments. Stand by for our "First-hour" impressions later tonight, as well as our iOS4.1 -- 24-Hours Later post tomorrow night.

Bluetooth Recommendations for iPhone 3GS?

Apple iPhone - Bluetooth Recommendations for iPhone 3GS?

I have an old, inexpensive bluetooth that I bought over two years ago when I bought my Palm Treo. It's a Brio, and I would really like to get a nicer one for my iPhone 3GS. What do y'all recommend and/or detest? Why or why not?

Buy a Jawbone ICON. It's the best.

Get at Best Buy, AT&T Store or Apple Store.

I second the Jawbone ICON recommendation. Also, if you Google it, you can find it for about half retail.

Absolutely no complaints with my Jawbone Icon! I've had ever iteration of Jawbone, they keep getting better and better for me.

If you use your phone in the car a lot, I'd highly recommend the BlueAnt Supertooth III visor speakerphone. It downloads the iPhone's address book, announces callers by voice, and more. It has excellent noise cancellation tech also.

Not actually liking the multitasking as implimented

Apple iPhone iPod iTouch - Not actually liking the multitasking as implimented

Ok, I've now had the iPod Touch for about a day. It's the 3rd gen Touch, so I updated it to iOS 4.0.2 immediately... and I kinda wish I didn't.

I found the task manager completely by accident. I recall that double-clicking the Home button would take my old iPhone 3G to the first home screen, and discovered that's the way into the Task Manager, where I found almost all of the apps I had been playing with listed. It seems that there is no way to NOT leave an app open when closing it normally. And I presume that this, like in any other multitasking handheld, sucks down battery power.

And this kinda-sorta defeats the purpose of setting the email client to only use Fetch manually, because it will "fetch" when the email app is open, and it closes to the background, leaving it open and constantly connected to the server.

Is there anyway to get apps to actually close when I press the Home button to exit?

I also discovered that if I kill the Music process, the iPod function will still remember what song was playing, but it will forget where in the song it was.

iPhone iPod iTouch
Just curious, why did you get a 3rd Gen iPod touch when the 4th gen came out today? Other than that, you can manually close the apps by double pressing home, tap & hold until they shake then tap X on each until they close.

Regardless, the apps technically stop running when you home out, the ones that ask for 5, 10, 15 min shut down when they are finished, the only ones that keep running are GPS (TomTom, etc) and VoIP (Skype, etc) - everything else must close itself or the iOS will close it out, iPhone/iPod Touch just keeps the "most recent" apps listed in the tray.

-----
Price. When Apple announced the release of the 4th gen, stores dropped the prices on the 3rd gen. I could now stretch and justify the budget to get the 32GB at the lower price, but not the "full" $300, and the 8GB just doesn't have the capacity to hold what I want.

Yeah, I know. I did say that I found the task manager and killed apps that way. But what I want to know is if I can CLOSE an app normally without having to close it, double-click, tap-hold, kill, click, etc.

Some of these were "homed" out of over 20 minutes previously, and I don't think any of them need to remain running at all. And they were still running, as some of them take a few seconds to load through a splash screen, but when launched while still in the Task Manager, they opened instantly.

Mophie's $80 Juice Pack Air ships to iPhone 4 owners

Apple iPhone - Mophie's $80 Juice Pack Air ships to power-hungry iPhone 4 owners

My, how far we've come. Believe it or not, Mophie's Juice Pack pack is in its seventh generation of product development, with the latest 'Air' supporting Apple's polarizing iPhone 4. For those unaware, these cases nearly double the battery life of the phone they're wrapped around, and better still, it acts as protection against drops and dropped calls.

Fancy that! This little guy is said to provide up to six extra hours of 3G talk time, 36 hours of bonus audio playback or nine hours of video playback. It's shipping now, just like we said, to those willing to part ways with $79.95, and it's available in any color you want, so long as it's black.

-----
I was thinking I wouldn't need a juice pack anymore once I get the iPhone 4? How's the battery life?

-----
The battery life on the Iphone is great. I don't have to charge it nearly as often as I did my 3gs. I just like knowing I have the extra battery if I need it and the Mophie product is an excellent accessory to have around.

-----
I have no need for a juice pack, but then, I didn't with my 3G, either....

-----
I have never gone thru a full charge on my iPhone 4 in a single day (unplug before I leave home and have 25-60% left when I get home). But not having to remember to charge every day, preserving charge cycles, and having a fairly protective case all in one is worth it. Since $29 apple case was refunded I look Mophie only costing $50

-----
Mine is plugged in, charging, overnight, but in addition, may sit in a charge in the car if my errands are longer.

With regard to that, the case I am using at present, and likely to continue using, is the InCase version provided by the "Apple Bumper Program", and it is the ONLY case I have found to date with which I can STILL place the iPhone 4, IN its case, into the TomTom Car Kit dashboard mount.

Place a small piece of corrugated cardboard between the case and the back of the kit, at the bottom, and the power switch is triggered, so the kit's features all works as they did with the 3G.

-----
So long as it's black I love that lol

-----
I can't believe I'm buying another one but they are just great! Now I'll really be set if I'm traveling or what-not. I like it that this model uses the juicepack before the Iphone battery and that it turns itself off if not being used.

-----
I found as I also have an iPad, I barely use the iPhone 4 at all.

If I do need to worry about batteries, I have the FastMac IV case was for 3G/3GS and a naked iPhone 4 fits beautifully in there.

OK, It is not an attractive case, but you can't argue 'if it ain't broke...'

Nike+ with GPS Tracking

Apple iPhone - Nike+ Now Available with GPS Tracking (and Without the Shoe Chip Requirement)

iOS only: Nike+, the popular run tracking system that utilizes an iPhone/iPod touch and a sensor chip placed in your shoe, has released a new version that doesn't require a single-use chip, and also provides GPS mapping for social exercise management.

iPhone GPS

Wearing an iPhone is a bit more bulkier than a Garmin watch. Not sure how you look at the iPhone to see current pace, or race pace.

I don't think the Touch has GPS.

Don't even get me started with those runners who talk on their phone during the race.

-----
It is good to run with it. It is not as bulky as you might think. I did back to back marathon and a half. It is good to have your phone with you on training runs. You never know you might need it.

-----
I also ran with it [only a 5 k..but still...]...my only issue is getting a good arm band...but it wasn't uncomfortable ...

perhaps i'm just used to wearing something during my runs!

-----
I wear an armpocket (www.armpocket.com) when I go walk/running. I try to go 3 times a week and I do about 6 to 10 miles each time and I have to have something which keeps my key, my identification, a small snack (I'm diabetic) and my phone. Its a bit bulkier than most because I carry so much with me, but it fits around my arm securely with NO slippage. My phone is still functional in the band, there is a slot at the top for the headset (but I tend to go walking with my jawbone icon). When I tire of it, I just put it in the zip pocket.

I just don't want to pay for the Nike+ with GPS unit when the Nike+ app came with my phone and I did invest in the shoe fob.

-----
Here is my question regarding Nike +. if you have the previous version with the chip for the shoe. Is there and update to that app. Which allows you to remove the shoe?

-----
That is what this app is, you no longer need the shoe fob.

I have the chip in my shoe and it syncs to find the chip. When I get ready to run. So now I can open the app amd remove the chip out of the shoe?

-----
Well... On my first 5K test GPS didn't work. I usually use NewBalance app that uploads runs to mapmyrun. NB has GPS as well. Very similar to Nike app. The best part of the app is Free.

-----
I'll start over. Nike released a new Nike + app for $1.99 that uses the phones GPS, Accelerometer, etc instead of the chip in the shoe and the built in Nike+ App, so if you no longer want to use the shoes, shoe chip, or never bought them in the first place you can buy the $1.99 new App and use it instead of the built in App.

-----
I recommend SprintGPS. Check it out.

-----
You have to buy the new app if you don't want to continue to use your fob. Or you can keep what you have, and not purchase the new app.

iOS4 and iOS4.1 Compare Side by Side on an iPhone 3G?

Apple iPhone - How Do iOS4 and iOS4.1 Compare Side by Side on an iPhone 3G

iOS4.1 promises to increase the poor performance that iPhone 3G owners felt when they updated to iOS4. Website Lifehacker ran some tests to see which Operating system works better. Text messaging is definitely improved with 4.1, by a longshot.

Maps seem to load much faster with 4.1 as well. Photos and Mobile Safari are also improved. The video is worth a look, and while it may not be an official speed test, the side by side comparison shows some great results for the new operating system.

Good to know...i was very hesitant about upgrading my 3.0...still am..but less so.

Can we bypass 4 completely and go to 4.1 or do we have to do both?

-----
Yup, you can do 4.1 directly and it should be out some time on Weds (9/8), tomorrow.

Broke front glass on iPhone 4

Apple iPhone - Broke front glass on iPhone 4

Now what do I do?

Is there a repair kit?

iPhone Warranty
is there any Warranty for front glass apple iphone 4
There are a few choices.
There are some independent repair shops that can/will replace your glass. For around $70.00 to $80.00

From what I've heard Apple will exchange your broken iPhone for a unbroken iPhone for around $100.00 at most Apple stores. My son was able to exchange his at the Apple store in Sacramento, Ca.

Apple will repair your iPhone, for the same $100.00.

Live with it.

And - after the repair or replacement - seriously consider insurance.

Some *house* contents insurance policies cover phones, ipods, etc., when away from home. Ours even covers our bicycles. I don't think this cost any extra

-----
I can attest to the quality of work done by these independent shops. Beautiful job - good as new. I'll never be a slave to Apple again.

If you're stateside, try: http://www.brokemyiphone.com/ They repair iphones.

I wouldn't try the repair myself. However, you may be able to find a youtube video & a kit on ebay.

Complete iOS 4.1 Walkthrough

Apple iPhone - Complete iOS 4.1 Walkthrough

Complete iOS 4.1 Walkthrough

With iOS 4's launch only days away, we thought it would be interesting to provide a complete walkthrough of the new operating system. iOS 4.1 will be a free upgrade to all iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPod touch 2G, and iPod touch 3G users. It will also come standard on Apple's newly announced 4th generation iPod touch.

Bug Fixes:
As promised, Apple will be providing fixes for the three major well-known issues in iOS 4.0/4.01/4.02. The first, which for me is worse than the antenna issue, deals with the iPhone 4′s proximity sensor issues. Many users find they are accidentally inputing commands into the iPhones screen while on a phone call. 4.1 promises to rectify this issue.

The update also promises a fix for bluetooth connection issues as well as a bug that makes the iPhone 3G very sluggish while running iOS 4.0.Initial tests conclude that the update lives up to its word, especiallyin the Google Maps and Messages applications.

Enhanced Bluetooth audio playback:
As we reported back in mid-July, iOS 4.1 brings full AVRCP bluetooth playback. This enhanced bluetooth protocol allows for more audio controls via bluetooth such as skipping forward, back, and volume.

Before iOS 4.1 only volume controls were supported by bluetooth car stereo systems and such.

Game Center:
Game Center is Apple's social gaming network that brings players of similar skill sets together in multiplayer games. The service initially introduced in April of this year is now ready for primetime with a slew of supported games ready to launch.

HD Video Uploading:
A long requested feature is finally available on iOS 4.1 and that is the ability to upload HD videos directly from your iPhone 4 or 4th generation iPod touch. Though the feature only works on WiFi, it is better than having to sync to your computer in order to upload.

High Dynamic Range Photography (HDR):
One new feature that nobody really saw coming in iOS 4.1 was HDR. This photo mechanism snaps three stills and combines them to create the perfect photo depending on lighting, shadows, and other photo-altering elements. To enable HDR just click the HDR button on top of the Camera apps' interface. You can choose whether the camera will save just the HDR version of the photo or the standard version as well. (Note: HDR Photography is only supported on the iPhone 4. Sorry iPhone 3G/3GS
users remember your antennas work, though. )

FaceTime in Phone Favorites:
A new handy feature that Apple added to iOS 4.1 was the addition of FaceTime in phone favorites. You can now easily add FaceTime numbers and e-mail address to the favorites bar for quick access to you pal's faces.

E-Mail Based FaceTime:
As you know the new iPod touch has FaceTime, yet they obviously don't carry phone numbers. Because of this, Apple turned to E-Mail addresses as the point of FaceTime connection for their new iPod touch. Below is the interface for sending a FaceTime request to an E-Mail address.

Landscape Camera and FaceTime Call Controls:
Apple tends to port some of their portrait features to the landscape orientation from time-to-time and in iOS 4.1 they made FaceTime controls as well as the controls in the camera app easier to navigate in landscape.

$.99 TV Show Rentals in iTunes:
As you may know, Apple announced 99 cent TV show rentals for the United States in iTunes, and renting from your iOS device will be a go. Simply head to the TV Show section, then to your favorite show, then double click on an individual episode. From there you can now choose to own it, or rent it for 48 hours (you must watch it within 30 days) for less than a buck.

Ping support in iTunes:
Apple's newly announced music social network will be making its way to the mobile iTunes, but doesn't lose a beat. You can follow (stalk), comment, and read up your feed.

Disable Spell Check:
Here is another handy addition from Apple in iOS 4.1. For those who don't like Apple's spell check (this is different than auto-correction) you can disable it under Settings/General/Keyboard.

FaceTime and Multiplayer/Game Center Restrictions:
This one's for all the awesome parents out there. You can place restrictions on your kid's iOS device so they can't FaceTime or play games with people over the internet. Simply go to the restrictions menu, set a password, and disable them like you see below.

AT&T Carrier settings shift to version 8.0:
iOS 4.1 now includes an updated version of the AT&T (not sure about other carriers) carrier firmware. This may or may not improve cellular service, data connections, and text message sending, but at least they're trying.

We hope you found this walkthrough extremely comprehensive and we hope it helped you learn what iOS 4.1 has in store for you when it launches next week.

3G ringer

Need help for 3G ringer sound, Does not work for incoming calls even set from sound options. 2nd problem does not charge even after 24hrs but shows the charging signs always. I am new and do not have technical background.

iPhone RingtoneGirl wallpaper 4 apple iphone ringtones Some time it solve with rebooting, if it doesn't solve restore your phone.

Also make sure the ringer switch (top left corner of device) hadn't got turned off accidently. I did this once and it had me confused for a day or so. The switch should be up.

Contacts syncing

Apple iPhone - Contacts syncing

iTunes will sync with Windows Address Book -- but WAB isn't used anymore with Windows Live Mail (desktop), there's a different contacts arrangement there. Any ideas on what I could do so I could have a contacts list on my pc that would sync with iP* contacts?

I do *not* want to have to go to the cloud for this!

I'd hoped that v10 would have updated this as well, since WAB & Outlook Express hasn't been supported for a while now, but no go. I'm not even using WAB anymore as I've moved on from OE.

I also don't want to have to get something like Outlook just for this.
Apple obviously knows about MS contact programs -- why haven't they realized that lots of us are now using WLM with its contacts list rather than OE/WAB?

It is an annoyance to have to enter everything on my phone as well as in my WLM contacts. I'd hoped to be able to use just a subset/category (group) as you can with the WAB. I guess I'll have to resurrect the WAB & see how it works "on its own". iTunes sync *seems* to be updating the WAB with what I've entered on the phone. But that would still leave me doing double entry -- WAB/phone as well as WLM contacts for anything new -- although at least the amount of info I want to carry around is somewhat limited.

The best way for keeping your contact safe is Syncing with gmail.

-----
Back up and keep the file in a thumb drive

-----
It would be the best but the only problem is that it would not sync 2 mobile fields which I have on google.

Can delete email message

Apple iPhone - Can delete email message

My daughter gets email messages on her phone but not on her computer that say "no subject, no sender" and we can't delete them off her phone. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get rid of these messages?

iphone email
Girl with Camera apple iphone email
I am guessing that is from yahoo mail. That it server related. It should resolve itself..

-----
Reboot the iPhone. They will disappear. It is a bug.

-----
yep - same thing happens to me - they come back from time to time, but if I shut off the phone and then turn it back on they're gone.

and I don't have yahoo mail - it has nothing to do with that.

-----
Turning off the phone and starting it again did the trick.

-----
Good - keep in mind that you may have to do this off and on, repeatedly...

-----
Let me know if it happens again, and the email client. My friend did have to restore his phone and still did not get fixed. it was server related issue

-----
Have her turn off threading in the Mail settings on the iPhone and the sender, subject and content will appear. She can ten read and delete them.

It has to do with how the iOS 4 handles threading, if someone take an old post and changes the subject line, rather than start a new email. Mail in iOS 4 reads the long headers, not the subject line to group the threads.

I don't know that it has to do anything with the Yahoo servers, but the ones I get do seem to all be from Yahoo groups.

-----
Sign-out from the Yahoo Mail and sign-in again.

incipio case

apple iphone - incipio case

Have had this case for a short time in my opinion and its rubbery surface is starting to peel like it has a sunburn. Anybody else had this problem. My friend has the same one in pink and hers is fine. Mine is the off robin egg blue. Love the case but......

Does anybody know if the otterbox commuter has a holster type carry like the defender that goes on your belt?

iPhone Case
Serena Gossip Girla apple iphone case
I saw a customer's Otterbox Defender which DOES have a holster.

Usually, the 'peeling' happens when one is using hand sanitizers a lot. If you use the sanitizer... make sure your hands are dry before holding your case.

-----
I had an otterbox commuter for my iPhone 3G and it did not cone with a holster.

It was a major drawback and I ended up later getting a defender.

-----
Is it still in warranty? if Yes, contact Incipio about it.

Mobile Number Locator

Apple iphone - Mobile Number Locator

Im just wondering if iPhone has a feature, capable to locate or tract a certain mobile number within the area?

iPhone App
hottest girl on apple iphone apps
You mean track a location of a certain number like what FBIs and CIAs do?

Some network operators have that feature but you have to have the other phone owner's approval. My mom used to have that on me when I was younger.

But I think you can track your own iPhone's location though if you lost it via mobileme if I'm not mistaken.

Windows phones have that feature too via myphone.

-----
ohh.. ohh not exactly that i want to know what they are doing... i just what to know the location of some of my unknown callers which i dont want to accept instead. I was trying to browse my iPhone and i find out that my current network could tract it unless that number will confirm his current location.

-----
If you are wanting to find out the approximate location of your callers, there are two apps that may help you. First is "MapitAreaCD", this will give you the geographical area that an area code covers. Second in "White Pages", it has a reverse number look up that normally gives you the area that a phone number is issued from, as well as complete owner info for land lines if not blocked. Of course if you are trying to "track" mobile numbers, all bets are off.

actually the best is spokeo

Slow iphone 3G

Apple iPhone Apps - slow iphone 3G

My iphone3G was abysmally slow after I upgraded to firmware 4. I had not set it up as "new" when I first downloaded the software( ignoring the advice of many on the list). Since then i freted and fumed. Finally today I bit the bullet and "restored" and "set it as new".Well I lost the data in many apps :-(. But suddenly its no longer slow. Its as good as it was when on 3.0.
