Warranty on 3G

Apple iPhone - Warranty on 3G

I have a new iphone4 and gave my 3G to my daughter. The 3G is just about 2 years old.

The 3G now only receives some of the texts sent to it. When I put the 3G sim card in another phone all the old texts suddenly arrive on the other phone so the sim appears fine.

The 3G appears to be defective to me. I shall do a full restore and also update to 4.2 (it's currently on 4.1).

But my question is if I still have issues is the phone still covered by Apple at all? It's out of contract (finished this summer). Is it worth seeing Apple for a fix or do I just use it as a chunky iPod touch?

iPhone Warranty
What Review Apple iPhone Warranty
unless you specifically purchased an additional warranty, your warranty has expired at least a year ago.

as far as not getting your text messages,it seems to be a common problem with the 3g. A quick google of the problem was pretty interesting. Several said the following worked

1. Press the home button (the big circle below the screen) and the sleep wake button (the button on top of the iPhone) simultaneously.

2. Hold both buttons simultaneously for a few seconds, Ignore the "Slide to power off" and keep holding

3. The iPhone should now shutdown automatically - (fade to black)

4. Turn the iPhone back on by hitting the sleep/wake button.

5. You should now see the Apple logo, your iPhone is restarting and thus booting up.

6. You have completed a hard reset successfully.

4.2: 17 new text tone messages? Where are they?

Apple iPhone - 4.2: 17 new text tone messages? Where are they?

Dumb question probably, but where are the 17 new alerts as described from the Apple website as pasted below... I can't find anywhere where the new "17" are located... Any help from the gallery, please?

Messaging with text tones Know who's texting without looking at your screen. Choose from 17 new alerts and assign custom tones for people in your contact list.

iPhone iTunes Let s find Apple iPhone iTunes Look under Settings / General / Sounds. In the third section, tap "Text Tone" and you'll see a set of "Original" tones and above it a set of "New" ones.

-----
I see the 17 new text tones, but how do you apply one of them to a contact so you know who just texted you?

-----
Go into contacts, select a contact, edit contact, it's right below ringtone.

The new textones almost sound like they got them from Warner Bros cartoons.

-----
It would have helped if I scrolled down to that!

-----
I have a 3GS and after the upgrade the new text tones do not appear either. My tones are after going to settings/sounds and the same old ones are there

-----
I thought I was the only one. I have a 3GS also. I'm going to try to backup and restore to 4.2 unless someone else gives me a red flag not to.

This is actually the first time I've ever had a prob with an iPhone upgrade.

-----
I've read in a couple places online that they're apparently available on the iPhone 4 only.

Apparently Apple must believe 3G and 3GS hardware platforms are just too old and rickety to support additional text tones.

-----
So after doing the upgrades. What is everyone's opinion. Compared to the chernoybl fallout of 4.0 What is the overall consensus of upgrading to 4.2?

-----
I'm not seeing any difference on my 3rd gen iPod Touch. I think the only new feature that would effect me in any way is the Airprint, which does not work with a Windows desktop.

-----
My 3GS seems marginally more more responsive. But that's it. No new features on the 3 GS

-----
Oh, there is a difference after all... the iPod app now sometimes brightens the display when changing songs while plugged into the charge&play car adapter. This is highly distracting at night, and 4.1 and older did not do that.

-----
While 3Gs users might not have received 17 new text tones, we now have the ability to choose a tone per contact from one of the original tones. This is at least a step in the right direction...

4.2 error message

Apple iPhone - 4.2 error message

I went to update my phone to 4.2 from 4.2 and got the following message: "There are purchased items on the iPhone that have not been transfered to your iTunes library. You should transfer these items to your iTunes library before updating this iPhone. Are you sure you want to continue?" Cancel/Continue.

So I synced my phone, not once but twice, and I don't have new purchases to transfer yet I still get this message. Am I missing something or should I just go ahead and update to 4.2.

4.2 and AIR PRINT work over WiFi

Apple iPhone - 4.2 and AIR PRINT work over WiFi

Does AIR PRINT work over WiFi or BLUETOOTH? I can't get it to identify my printer under BLUETOOTH

iPhone WiFi What we can do with Apple iPhone WiFi WiFi and the printer has to be shared on a Mac that is turned on and running OS X 10.6.5 with Printer Sharing turned on.

-----
I have MAC O.S. 10.6.5., I enabled PRINTER SHARING.. yet when I try to use the option in iOS 4.2., the Printer Options window pop up, I select, SELECT PRINTER it looks for my printer, but still get the "no printer found" message

-----
You have to share you printer also - two different things, "Printer Sharing" is in the Sharing pane in System Preferences, then in the Printers pane click on your printer and click "Share this Printer" or "Share on Network" something like that.

-----
enabled BOTH options and still nada :(

-----
Something tells me I'm going to run into the same thing when I get home and start monkeying around with Air Print.

-----
What they DIDN'T publicize is that AirPrint only works for 10 HP printers at the moment, with a few more to follow.

If you want to print to ANY printer, buy AirSharePro. Great app, anyway, because it does all kinds of stuff - and prints to any printer on a WiFi network.

-----
Not true, those 10 HP printers will work without a Mac on - all other printers have to be shared through a Mac to work through Airprint. Yes I know some of you don't have it working yet and I don't know why but I have been using Airprint for 2 months without an HP printer via shared printers on iMac and yesterday on a MB Air both running 10.6.5

-----
10.6.5 final or an earlier developer build that still included the Airprint drivers?

-----
Developer build but installing the final didn't remove them - I must have missed the 'notice' that they didn't include the Airprint Drivers from the final release (makes no sense as there was never an issue with it).

From what I have gathered, if you only have the final 10.6.5 installed you only have the HP Support, if you install the "removed" drivers it does work fine but you do have to download the drivers from non-apple sources.

Installed IOS 4.2.1 and 3GS

Apple iPhone - Installed IOS 4.2.1 and 3GS

Am I missing something here ???? I installed 4.2.1 on my 3GS and am not seeing any new features, especially Airprint. Any ideas as haw to access Airprint or is it not avaliable on a 3GS??? Are there any new features avaliable on the 3GS with 4.2.1 ?

iPhone iOS
Imge for FaceTime, article for Apple iPhone iOS
Have you installed OS X 10.6.5 and have a Shared Printer installed and Printer Sharing enabled in system preferences? In any message or web page hit forward and Print will be an option.

-----
Does the printer need to be a wifi printer?

-----
No, but printer needs to be on mac that is turned on, running 10.6.5 and shared.

-----
So those of us using Windows are out of luck?

-----
For now, yes - there should be a windows component coming down as part of the "Mobile Me Control Panel" item through Apple Software Update before the end of the month (probably by weekend).

-----
Well, not really. I bought one of the new HP Photoshop Plus printers, the B210A and my Iphone 3GS prints wonderfully to it. Even gives me message on Iphone if Ink is low. Also when you setup the printer the printer gets assigned its own unique email address. So wherever you are in the world just email photo or file to that address and it prints, also sends photos to photo print tray automatically. Printer sells for about $100

-----
Thats good to know.

-----
MacBook Pro (2009 model) running 10.6.5.
Printer sharing turned on in System Preferences
Both of the printer shown there check-marked

Safari shows the Airprint option, but cannot find the printers.

One printer is connected by USB to my Airport Extreme Base Station; the other is connected by ethernet to the same.

-----
I'm assuming your iPhone has wifi on and connected to the same network as Mac that printer is shared on?

-----
Correct.

-----
Honestly, I don't know what else to tell you to try, maybe call Apple Support - I have had my share of Mac / iOS / Computer related issues in general but Airprint (and Airplay) both 'just worked' for me - my setup sounds very similar to yours I have a "Network" Cannon PIXMA printer plugged into one of my routers and my other home printer is plugged into a Windows machine via USB, both are installed on my "main" Mac, Printer Sharing on, and both checked as being shared with "everyone" "can print" - last night I added the Cannon to the new MB Air for the first time and it showed up on the phone right after that.

The only possible difference is that I am running the Gold Master vs the "official" release but the build numbers are the same - 8C148 for both iPad WiFi & iPhone 4

-----
Just to clarify...does airprint work if you are on a windows platform not MAC??

-----
Not yet

-----
My bad, found it and it works well with my HP B210 Printer.

Apple iPhone - IOS 4.2, Air Print

Let me know what you think of Air Print when you get a chance.

iPhone iOS
4 face time data What the meaning of Apple iPhone iOS
AirPrint will not do me any good. I already have a printer app that doesn't work with my shared printer.

-----
Airprint will work with ANY shared printer - I have a Cannon PIXMA and an old Dell Laser printer both work fine with Airprint - been using it since Beta 3.

-----
My Epson Stylus CX9400 is configured to be shared on my LAN and is turned ON. My iPod touch is connected to my LAN via WiFi, and cannot locate the printer.

-----
I hope you are right, but the word is AirPrint doesn't work with shared printers on Windows networks.

-----
It doesn't, yet - I have been using it since Beta 3 of 4.2 (more than 2 months ago) and neither of my Macs stay on 24/7 - only Windows at home and office so it is a pain in the ass if I want to print something when either Mac is shut down. There is no "PDF Printer Driver" for Mac either so I can't save something as a PDF from iPhone or iPad either - I can't WAIT for it to come to Windows as I have PDF "Printers" installed and Windows stays on 24/7 at home and office so I can print or create PDF without having to think about if a Mac is turned on.

They HAVE to expand Airprint to Windows in some form or another there are way too many iPad, iPod, & iPhone users who only have Windows PCs & networks not to implement it.

-----
I downloaded and have been using the beta version of 4.2 on my iPad for a few weeks. I did a sync with the new version of the IOS but iTunes tells me that I have the current version of the software. On my iPhone after the sync which I had not put the beta version of 4.2 it now reads 4.2.1 but not on my iPad. Am I missing something and if so are there steps that I can take to correct it?

Apple iPhone Facetime
To do Facetime with a stranger would require that you give them your phone number. Do you really want to do that. It does not sound safe to me.

-----
Actually since Facetime launched on the iPod Touch and the beta for Macs/OS X you can use e-mail addresses (Apple / iTunes ID) or a phone #.

In fact if you have a mac and an iPhone 4 (or iPod Touch 4) or an iPhone 4 and an iPod Touch 4 you can "FaceTime" yourself to test and play with it...

-----
I totally agree, I'm not a fan of giving out my number for every one to see.... I did some research and found a site that claims to connect facetime users safely called "facetimebff". Funny name right? Anyway it seems legit so I signed up and made a profile, looks like they have a decent amount of users so far, me thinks they must be pretty new. So if you guys wanna join and contact me through there then we can test out facetime!

Google Contacts

Apple iPhone - Google Contacts

I noticed something today which I've never noticed before. I no longer user MobileMe to sync my contacts, I've gone to Google to do so. It works perfectly for my needs, except for this one glitch. I have coworkers who recently obtained Blackberry's (company issued). They have "work" - or office numbers, they have personal cell phone numbers and now they have these Blackberry's. I happened to be in front of my desktop when they obtained their new numbers and I made a custom label for the blackberry number, entitled "blackberry".

Well I discovered that the custom label didn't sync with my iPhone. Undaunted I went to my iPhone and attempted to make a custom label in the contact area and found that I could not. Hopefully, all of the guru's here will tell me the secret to make such a custom label. I can make the "blackberry" number another "work" label but as I said earlier, the work label has their desk phone listed and I would like to be as accurate as possible in labeling the numbers.

Any suggestions for me on this? or am I doing something wrong? I would love to be able to change the choices on the iPhone, considering that it has a label for "pager" and who on earth still has one of those? If I could rename Pager to BB or Blackberry, at least it would be more relevant for my needs.

iPhone Google
Let s see about Apple iPhone Google
Perhaps label blackberries as work mobile or company mobile.

-----
If you sync "over the air" with Google, it will only sync the basic labels. It will not sync custom ones.

-----
It's a limitation of Exchange which is how you're most likely synching google contacts now. It's a well known limitation and you can't use custom labels. I went through and created a boatload of custom labels in Goigle contacts only to find the phone numbers disappeared at next sync. Had to go back and put them as work and pager numbers again.

-----
Thank you for this explanation. I shall have to come up with my own system for remembering which number is which.

-----
When you'll go to Google.com/sync, go to iPhone option and you'll see it's limitations as which fields sync.

iTunes account id

Apple iPhone - iTunes account id

Any one help me, how to get iTunes id

iPhone iTunes
Waht we want frm Apple iPhone iTunes
You create an iTunes account when you make a purchase from the iTunes or App Stores.

You can purchase a free item or use a credit card or gift card to pay for it. If you do not use a credit card, then enter none when you are asked.

-----
When you go to AppStore from your iPhone for the first time, it will ask you to make registration

-----
You create one when you go to the iTunes store.

-----
On the iPhone, open iTunes app, tap on music bottom left, scroll all the way to the bottom and it'll tell you which account it's using.

-----
I already try that but can't show " none " select. Can u please make me iTunes id,,

-----
No one can make an iTunes id for you. We don't have your financial information.

-----
Ditto

Besides it needs to be made from your iPhone or computer, from your country. You should be able to purchase a free app without a credit card.

So what you are asking us to do looks suspiciously illegal. The fact, that you have never posted to this before, does not help your case.

-----
The "none" option if you do not wish to purchase paid apps will only be available if you try to purchase a free app first. Then you will be prompted to either enter your username and password or create a new account. Choose the latter. The option you're looking for should be there.

I don't know why Apple only made that option available through the above process and not when you directly create an account (without trying to purchase first).

-----
One does not need credit card to have an account since one always "buy" free apps

You can have this replaced usually for about 35$ if you can find a repair center. It's kind of difficult to replace since you have to remove the board and everything out of the phone. The sworn is attached to a piece of metal. It is part of the power flex cable you have to be careful not to break it or your power headphones volume and vibrate will not work.

Turning off your iPhone

Apple iPhone - Turning off your iPhone

I've had an AT&T cell phone the whole time I've lived at my current home, about 10 years, and up until a couple of months ago the service has been acceptable. For some reason after the iOS 4.1 update my overall cell phone service on my iPhone 4 went down drastically! So finally I made a call to AT&T customer service and after a time I was handed off to a "tech". The the tech had me "reset network settings" which seamed to help. Her explanation was that "all" cell phones have to be turned off ( for at :30 ) and back on every day to let it re-register with the network.

1) The software on a smart phone could do that.
2) Even tho I've not powered my cell phones off in the past, this is a new problem.
3) Over the past week or so I've made it a point to turn my iPhone 4 off every day. With a huge improvement in overall cell phone performance.

You can make your own judgments.

iPhone ATT
What we want from mobile video Apple iPhone ATT
Are you or the tech making a distinction between touching "Reset Network Settings" (General -> Reset -> RNS's) and "turning off the phone" (which could refer to just turning it off with the top iPhone button vs Soft vs Hard Reset)?

My understanding was that just turning it off with the top button won't reset anything, but simply black out the screen and save some power. What action are you actually performing to improve your phone's performance? I'd like to test this on my own phones.

-----
I have only performed the reset network settings operation once but turn my iPhone off and on daily.

If you notice in my original post I quoted the tech. She said turning a cell off & back on causes it to re register with the network. This is for all cell phones, even phones that can't reset the network from settings.

-----
When you say that you "turn my iPhone off and on daily", do you mean press-and-HOLD the On/Off button until the "slide to power off" slider appears, then sliding it to Off?

Because if you are only pressing the On/Off briefly, and the screen goes dark, then you are NOT shutting your iPhone OFF, you are doing little more than turning the *screen* off.

-----
I am turning it off. ( press and hold, then slide the slider). Not putting it to sleep.

-----
Yes. Switching off and on is re-registering. The process of registering a GSM phone is an elaborate ritual involving as many as 8 to 10 messages being e changed between the handset and the tower. It includes sending identity of SIM as well as hanset being sent and the same being passed onto the original switch/ exchange ( in case of roaming ). All parameters are loaded by network into the handset de-novo.

export to iphone 4G?

Apple iPhone - export to iphone 4G?

I am purchasing a new iPhone4G tomorrow. Currently have a 8300 blackberry curve, and my PC is XP with Outlook 2010.

I have 'memopad' entries and 'calendar' entries on my blackberry. I have successfully imported these entries to my outlook 2010 (the memopad entries are now in my outlook 'notes').

So, now I am just wondering how easy it will be to import the address book, calendar and 'notes' to my new iphone 4G. does anyone know?

iPhone New
What we want is New Apple iPhone
Good move. I have to wait until next Summer before I can do the same.

Make sure that your BB Desktop Manager is set to sync all of that to Outlook.

When you get the iPhone and plug it into iTunes, you'll be able to configure iTunes to sync that info between Outlook and the iPhone. The iPhone will show up in the Library list on the left side, select it. Then go through the various tabs to configure what you want to sync to the phone.

-----
If you haven't already got iTunes on your PC, you might as well download and install it now. This will give you time to import any music, etc., that you'll want to sync with the iPhone, and to get used to how iTunes works.

When you connect the iPhone you'll have various options for syncing calendar, contacts, etc., so if you've been syncing the Blackberry with Outlook there should be no problem in carrying forward your entries to the iPhone.

-----
Yes, I have itunes and use it for music and movies. But i don't see the calendar, address book and notes (or memopad) options.

-----

Apple's design philosophy is to show you only what's relevant in context. The idea is to reduce clutter but it can be frustrating when you want to set something up in advance.

You don't see the iPhone (or iPod) sync options until you connect the device. It appears under Devices in the left sidebar. When you select it, you'll see tabs in the main iTunes window for Summary, Info, Apps, Ringtones, Music, TV Shows, Podcasts, Books, and Photos. Summary gives general info and options. The rest allow you specify syncing preferences for each category. The Info tab has options for syncing MobileMe, Address Book, Calendars, Mail Accounts, Safari bookmarks, and Notes.

I just upgraded to iPhone 4, and I'm trying to keep an eye on my data usage. I checked it at 8:17 this morning (using the *3282# text message to AT&T) and my total so far this month was 317.7 MB. The phone basically sat unused on my desk all day, and when I checked *3282# again at 3:27 this afternoon, my total is now 328.8MB. In other words, it used 11 megs, just sitting on my desk doing nothing.

No phone calls, no internet browsing, no GPS fixes. How come?

I have push notifications turned off, data roaming off. 3G is turned on, but I didn't actually use the phone for anything.

iPhone 4
That is what we want Apple iPhone 4
Non of the methods of checking usage ( text, app or web site) are up to the minute. They tend to lag behind by as much as days.

-----
Why not try the ATT mobile app? Doesn't use text.

-----
The AT&T App is no more up to date than the text message, in fact I suspect it gets it's information from the same place.

-----
I wasn't addressing the issue of being more (or less) up-to-date, rather that the app doesn't use text.

Myself, I've opted out of text. The app works better for me.

-----
I've also wondered what the mystery-data-usage is -- often in the middle of the night, when my phone is at home & on wi-fi & I'm asleep anyway! The times that my usage is listed (in the online info it's listed by time & date) is happening when I'm *not even using my phone*, it's not doing anything but sitting on a table. I have *no* notifications set, *no* pushes, *no* mail or info fetching.
??

Someday I may have to call & ask them what-gives on this.

Even though I'm not close to using my allowance, I *am* on a limited plan -- so why are they using up some of my bytes??

-----
I thought that texts from AT&T were free. AT&T has told me several times that the ones to check minutes, balance, etc. do not come out of your monthly text allotment.

One thing I found when I was getting chunks of unexplained data was I had some games that use OpenFeint. I had it turned on. When I turned it off, most of my unexplained data stopped. You might have some games that are updating or sending stats to the server. OpenFeint is on a lot of games that I have but now I always click on "off". It is a scoreboard type feature.

-----
They are free. I don't have a text allotment; I get charged for any texts I do send or receive, but not for the ones I've gotten from ATT.

I turn off any such "features" as soon as I see them in the options, and I usually go right to options with a new game so I can turn off the noise. :-)

I have used those games very little -- mostly just once or twice when first d/l to see whether or not I like them.

Even if something like that has escaped me it doesn't explain why it's using *data plan* rather than the wi-fi everything else uses when I'm home (unless I'm actually using the phone as a *phone*, when it uses *phone minutes* not data).

Never had that problem but had many issues with syncing. I found that disabling antivirus software during sync stopped the issues I was having. In 3 months there has not been one issue. (In the past every sync was an
exercise in reboots.) Perhaps uninstalling following the exact instructions from apple (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1925) and then reinstalling with antivirus and possible firewall disabled (if internet connection is stopped while you install) may help. I am using AVG and Zonealarm and they routinely cause me problems if on during a sync.

I may be totally off base. hope this helps.
