iPhone 4, Sticking Home Button

I have a four month old iPhone4,and recently the home button seems to stick, not allowing me to exit out of pages, apps etc. Or even to turn on at times. Has anyone else experienced this and if so, how did you get it sorted?

Apple iPhone 4Apple iPhone 4

-----

Go to Apple Store and they'll replace that. You're lucky it's still under warranty.

-----

Make an appointment at the Apple Store (have to go through apple.com) if there isn't one within driving distance can be mailed in. Since it is an iPhone 4 it is still under warranty (they haven't been out a year yet) and that is a warranty issue they will either fix the button or replace the phone so back up before you take it in.

-----

Happened to me. They replaced the iPhone4 at an Apple store.

-----

Thanks all for the advice. I will book an appointment and get it sorted. Cheers

Weather warning app?

Does anyone know of an app to monitor weather & give warnings like the weather radios do. I have a friend who is going to be traveling in tornado country soon.

Apple iPhone appsApple iPhone

-----

You really need an app that is location aware. I like MyWeather. You can set up to push warnings for your current location. I am sure there are many more.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/myweather-mobile/id435025246?mt=8

-----

Most of them? Weatherbug and Weather Channel, at least, have Alerts from the NWS. I don't know off hand how well they'll get your attention on an alert if you're not already looking at the program. But hey, they're both freeware so it costs nothing to try them.

-----

I have this one:

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/weather-alert-usa/id314502416?mt=8

Weather Alert USA. It is very nice. You can set up many different alerts for any zip code or use your current location. It has alerts for tornadoes, thunderstorms, earthquakes, evacuations and many more.

The sound for "high alert" is the same sound that comes across tvs and radios.

-----

Imap weather looks very good for this function.

-----

+1 on Weather Alert USA. I use it and like it. You can also get weather radio broadcasts from it.

Thanks to all for the input on weather warning apps.

iPhone, iPod

I just noticed. I can loop music on my iPod but can't seem to do it on iphone4. Is this true or am I missing something?

Apple iPhone iPodApple iPhone

When you play something on your iPhone, tap the screen so the bar that shows the length and current position is showing. The small icon on the left side is the loop function. Tap on it to cycle between looping the current song, or the entire playlist, or to turn it off again. The shuffle button is on the other side.

-----

That worked. I figured I was missing something.

-----

I rarely even want to "shuffle" -- and most of my ipod-playing is audiobook or podcast -- but I looked at this. Apparently it's only on "music" playlists -- in an audiobook the icon on the right is a "speed button" for 1/2x 1x or 2x.

I do make extensive use of the 30-second-rewind button below the middle of the position-bar.

Bluetooth stereo

Has anyone tried the plantronics backbeat 903+? The utube review shows you cannot change iPod volume from iPod screen but did not say if you could change via side up down buttons and volume control on earpiece tiny joystick. That's really the only sticking point for me to try one.

Other recommendations welcome as well. I bought a motorola s10-hd which hurts my ear and it will be going back to wal mart. Stereo and mic required with whatever I get.

Apple iPhone BluetoothApple iPhone

I use the backbeat with my iPhone4 from time to time. I don't recall having problems adjusting the volume via the buttons on the side of the phone.

The volume control on the headphones themselves definitely works. The same control also will jump to the next track or back up a track, if held, as noted on the control. The Backbeat handles phone calls well, also. My only gripe with it is the fact that the stock ear tips don't work all that well for me, coming out of my ears if I don't get them just right. If I used it a lot, I would probably spring for custom ear molds.

Also, I noticed on today's "hotsheet" from eCost.com that they have the Backbeat for $27.99. I bought two from them, and had no problems.

-----

I don´t know if it was asked here before....

I would like to know if the IPhone turns off the WiFi and/or the 3G/Edge when it goes to sleep?

Some people say yes others say no...

iPhone, Can the iPhone 4 take ...

Photos in B&W *without* processing afterwards?

i.e. I'd like to view the preview in B&W, then take the photo in B&W, without the extra step of converting it after the fact - like using B&W film, but with the added advantage of being able to see the image in the preview in B&W first.
Apple iPhone photographyApple iPhone

I use retro camera plus. It's free. It gives you several old style cameras that have the option to take photos in B&W.

-----

Almost, but not quite - it converts the photo later. I'm looking for "in-camera" B&W - not conversion. Thanks.

-----

I use Hipstamatic. It works great.

-----

No. The camera has a color sensor. There is no way to do it "in camera" the way you mean. Whether you convert it to B&W with on-device settings or on your desktop later, it must be converted to B&W at some point to get a B&W image.

As Tara indicated, there are camera apps that will make it appear to be what you want, but all they're doing is pre-converting it for you.

As an avid amateur photographer, my suggestion is that unless you want to upload the image online immediately when you take it, don't do the conversion in-camera. Rather wait until you get it to your desktop and can use a more powerful image editor in order to both maintain the highest possible quality and to allow you more control over the results.

-----

I'm also a long-time amateur photographer (40 years) , and 99.99% of the time, I do just as you suggest. This is what you might call a "corner case" where I have a specific task in mind and I'm looking for a specific tool to do just that.

In short, the only things the app needs to do is:

1. show me scene in B&W.
2. capture that scene in B&W

Optionally it would be nice to have some measure of control on focus area (like the native iPhone 4 camera app), brightness, contrast, but that's all icing on the cake.

If there's an app that can do that, I'm still looking. :)

-----

Can't help you there, sorry. I have a 3rd Gen Touch, not an iPhone.

-----

Pro shots camera can take in BW - but you have to take the picture then look at it, it doesn't turn the "viewfinder" black and white. At one time, it must have been free or had a free lite version, because I never pay for apps. If you want to buy it, it is a dollar.

-----

Hipstamatic has a B/W film feature. You have to pay extra for it.

Once a photo is taken you can preview.

iphone, The Callet Case

I saw an ad for this case for my iPhone 4 and couldn't resist trying it, since the price was right and it looked intriguing. I'm not sure if it is the best idea or the worst in a long time, but so far, I like it. It's a basic rubber case that slips over the phone and protects the back and sides. It covers the front edges of the phone as much as it can without obscuring the screen, so it should provide at least some screen protection, as well.

The gimmick is that the back of the case has a couple of slots for credit cards, drivers license, etc. Right now, I'm carrying it with my primary credit card and drivers license in it. The good news is that I have my most frequently needed items in one handy place. The bad news is that they are all in one place, so if the phone is lost or stolen, so is my license and credit card. My wife thinks it is dangerous, but since I have never lost a cell phone or had one stolen in all of the years that I have been using one, and since I carry it in the front pocket of my pants, I'm not too worried. Time will tell...

Apple iPhone CaseApple iPhone

How is this different from the way most women (I don't know about your wife but I know I usually do it) carry both wallet & cell in their purse?

-----

I think this is bad news. Keep your cards separately.

-----

Any suggestions on how else to carry things?

-----

If you are a woman, carry a purse and put everything in it.

If you are a man, carry a wallet for your money and cards, and your iPhone separately in a front pants pocket.

-----

Most men carry their wallets in a back pocket - which is inviting pickpockets.

I keep mine in a front pocket, at least there are more nerves there to alert me
to attempts to pick my pocket.

All may be moot soon anyway - as smart phones are already usable for plane board passes on some airlines, and some smart phones may soon be used for purchases at a few stores and their use will rapidly expand. So if you lose your phone - and it isn't password protected - you are basically screwed.

Even password protection on iPhones is weak. 10000 combinations would take patience, but a determined hacker could do 0000 through 9999 eventually and then go on a spending spree.

The best strategy - carry that phone in the other front pocket from the wallet if you are a guy. Since my daughter is an actress and we have half of Hollywood on our phones - at least the Disney and Nick stars - we are basically paranoid about our phones, using pseudo-names for contacts, etc. But it wouldn't take long for somebody to figure it out and get private numbers, so - we learn to be very careful with the phones and not lose them. And the best contact list - is the one you memorize and carry in your head, which we have had to do with some of the more famous ones.

Bottom line: protect that phone - it has a lot of ways an identity thief can hurt you - the 4 digit password is better than nothing. Don't download bank or shopping apps - that phone gets lost your information is out there. And the best case scenario for your contacts is they get nuisance telemarketing calls. The worst case scenario is probably worse than you care to imagine. So be careful!

-----

The subject was carrying phone *and* id/ccs in the same case, not how good of a case you might need.

I have a basic case on my iphone to improve grip-ability, not because it needs much protection from anything but dropitis. (also, different cases on different devices makes it easier to tell which is which even at a distance.)

Women's clothes don't always (or even often, though I haven't shopped in "a while") come with pockets that are either as numerous or as large as those that men's clothes routinely have.

iPhone 4, Can't Delete iTunes Podcast Download

iPhone 4 iOS 4.3.3

From the iPod app, trying to download more cartalk podcasts. It goes to iTunes app and says waiting. I have been waiting for a few hours.

Normally can swipe on it and then can delete it, but swiping does not work.

Any suggestions as to how to delete it.Apple iPhone iTunesApple iPhone-----

Kill the app and try again? from home screen press home button twice rapidly, tap and hold iPod app until it wiggles and shows X then tap X, relaunch app and try to swipe to delete...

-----

Neither the iPod or iTunes apps have an X when hold them until they wiggle

-----

Did you press the home button twice in rapid succession first? If you are in move-mode and not quit-mode, then Apple apps will not have an X.

You need to, from the home _screen_, quickly tap the home _button_ twice. This will open a window at the bottom of the screen showing the open apps. __Then__press and hold one app until they all wiggle and have an minus sign (Bill meant). Press the minus to quit the app, Apple apps included.

-----

Did that and saw minus sign a quit that and then it worked.

Original iPad or iPad2

My husband received a gift of an iPad 64gb, wifi and 3G. We both have iPhones with unlimited data. We can't afford a data plan for the iPad. Do you think we ought to exchange it for an iPad2 with wifi only? We don't need the 64gb, we could use 32gb. It is about the same price.

Apple iPhone ipadApple iPhone-----

If you can exchange it for a 2, you will find it significantly faster & lighter. Plus you get cameras for FaceTime or Skype video conferencing. No contest decision!

-----

I just went to the store where it was purchased. They have no ipad2's and the original credit card that was used would be credited. This was a gift from my husband's boss. He doesn't want them to know that he is exchanging it and they said it takes 2 months to get refund and we would have to pay upfront for them to order the ipad2. Well, the ipad was free so we will keep it. Thanks.

-----

You could always sell the iPad on eBay or Craigslist and purchase an iPad 2 at some point in the future...

-----

"This was a gift from my husband's boss."

Key sentence here. Keep the gift, maybe a year or so from now sell it and upgrade but since it was a gift, keep it and enjoy. IPad 1 is a great device and the cameras on the 2 are really not that good.

-----

I suggest keeping the gift. You are not obligated to activate the 3G. And, though, you may not need the whole 64gigs spec now, you may find it useful, later.

I don't believe anyone regrets having too much storage space available.

And, the 3G can be activated on a month to month basis (as needed), if you decide you need 3G at some point.

If this is your first iPad, you will find it more of the go-to unit over an iPhone due to the large screen & a bit easier to use due to it's size.

Enjoy the iPad, which ever way you decide,

-----

I would.

-----

my decision is to get an iPad2 with 3G since it can be activated month to month. used my friend's yesterday and it ROCKS!

New iPhone hotspot is a bust!!

I just downloaded the new OS for the iPhone and I had seen that there was a way you could use your phone as a hotspot. I went into settings to do this ( I have a iPad wifi only) and the app said to contact AT&T. So I did. And guess what they told me? That I needed to change my plan from unlimited ( I was grandfathered in because I have had every iPhone since day 1) to a limited data package!! So basically for me to use my Internet for 2 devices I have to change my unlimited data plan to limited! I said no and hung up. I'll be honest I am about to drop AT&T after 13 years!!

Apple iPhone NewApple iPhone

-----

You have the best deal that can be had on data with the AT&T grandfathered unlimited data. I would not give that up just because you do not like their tethering plan. The rules you describe have been that way since tethering was introduced. Where I live, there are more AT&T wifi hotspots everyday. I just use one of those for my iPad.

-----

I'm curious, does anybody know: Does AT&T charge extra for tethering with their other phones? Or is it just the iPhone?

-----

All phones have always required $20 extra for tethering, the difference is that you used to be able to add it to the unlimited $30/mo data plan, now you have to give up unlimited plan and move to 2GB $25 plan and pay an additional $20 for 2GB of tethering data.

-----

"Unlimited" is going the way of the dodo-bird.

Even "wired" (cable) companies are trying to figure out how to handle -- charge for-- based on usage for hi-use accounts (e.g. the 24-hr streamers).

I don't know if there are unltd plans for other ATT phones or other carriers for whatever phones, but I don't think you'll be able to get them much longer, with or without any tethering options. Anything grandfathered my expire at some point with a new device or whatever.

-----

One thing has always bothered me about this hotspot idea. I've seen the commercials, someone turns their phone into a hot spot, and complete strangers within range start using the hotspot.

Nice idea - seems generous to give people wifi access, warm fuzzy feeling. But in real life - I don't see this happening:

(1) People are using your bandwidth. Even if you are on an unlimited plan, it will slow your access down. If you aren't on unlimited, you are paying for the megabytes they use. NOT a good idea to give somebody a "blank check" like that!

(2) Consider legal liability / privacy / issues. Suppose stranger 1 is looking at child porn. Stranger 2 is trying to access your bank account. Stranger 3 is an Al Quaida sleeper and is downloading dirty bomb instructions. Stranger 4 is downloading as many copyrighted movies as they can from illegal download sites.

Think you aren't responsible because you gave these clowns access? The guy clearing out your bank account is the least of your worries ----

(3) Just how much bandwidth can you squeeze through one cell phone? Probably not much. Everybody slows to a crawl on your mini wi-fi network, and everybody drops when the cell drops.

It just seems like a bad idea all around. Even from home - what are the neighbors in other houses doing? You better secure that mini wi-fi hotspot, or chaos may ensue!

-----

I haven't tried it, because I don't want to $pend that kind of money myself, but I would be very surprised if the hotspot software did not allow for encryption and passwords to prevent random access.

-----

Encryption is the default mode. In fact, you CAN'T have it on in "open" mode.

-----

Yea. That is what the story is.

But is there a iPhone with verizon that has unlimited and will allow hotspot?

-----

-----

Yeah - once T-Mobile merger is done and if T-Mobile still offers unlimited, I may see if I can use my GSM iPhone on T-Mobile somehow. Probably yes once T-Mobile gets the iPhone.

I can just see it happening - next upgrade they will try to hit me with limited plans.

-----

My Rogers 3G gives me 5 Mbps download and 3 Mbps uplaods. My home internet connection is 10Mbps down and 512 Kbps uplaod.

(3) Just how much bandwidth can you squeeze through one cell phone? Probably not much. Everybody slows to a crawl on your mini wi-fi network, and everybody drops when the cell drops.

iPhone, Mophie Juice Pack Plus

Apple iPhone BAtteryApple iPhoneI'm planning to buy a Mophie Juice Pack Plus and I wondering if anyone on the list have one?

I am curious to know how much it can charge a fully depleted iPhone 4 battery?
I cannot find this info on the web. They all say about talk time or Internet time, but it is very unclear to me.

I wanted to know how far it goes when you have your iPhone battery is dead and the case if fully charged, how high will it bring the iPhone battery back before it dies.

I have a cheap Mophie clone and it does charge my iPhone 4 up to 95%, and then stops. So we are talking about almost 2X the iPhone battery capacity and I don´t think there is a 2000mAh battery in there like the Mophie Plus says it has.

I hope Mophie Plus can do better than that.
-----

The plus will fully charge iPhone 4 at least 1.33 times. It is 2000 mah and iPhone is 1500 so full charge with 500 left.

-----

In a perfect world yes, but I would like to know from a owner who has used it.

Even when I bought my cheap case I didn´t expected much out of it and it ended up giving me good results

-----

I have the mophie juice pack plus. Its great however, in my experience it does not completely charge an iPhone 4. Close. But not quite. Probably goes to about 80% when the device is completely empty.

Syncing Problem with iCal, Mobile Me and iPhone and Events set to Re

Just noticed an error in tracking repeating events.

I have a category called Birthday's set up on my iCal account. It includes all significant dates not just birthdays. I just noticed a lot of these entries aren't being synced to the iPhone. They do appear on MobileMe. The main difference between the events that are synced and the ones that aren't is that
a.) Ones that are synced, are set to Never End.
b.) Ones that aren't synced are set to end after a certain number of years.

Any one else notice this and know whether I have set some preference file up incorrectly or if this is a known problem?
-----

Couple of things spring to mind.

I would change the name of the calendar to something other than Birthdays. Reason being is that there is an automatic calendar that is created by iCal & Address Book called Birthdays. Just eliminates any problems. Make sure that propagates through all your iDevices.

On your iPhone, check the settings. Especially the range of items to be synced. I just have it set to all. Covers everything.

Setup syncing on another mac or iDevice and see if it syncs correctly there. If it doesn't it's a MobileMe problem setting. If it does, it's a phone setting.

-----

But he said he named it Birthday's, using what we linguists call the greengrocer's apostrophe--tomato's instead of tomatoes, etc. Surely the apostrophe kept the software from equating this with the reserved-word standard plural?

A Sync Trap For The Unwary Message List

On Friday I bought from Apple a new album (Grateful Dead's 1972 Europe Tour, if you're interested) and downloaded it. To transfer it to my iPhone iPod, I adjusted the sync settings to only sync that album, and then synced the iPhone.

With NO warning from Apple or the iPhone, to my horror this effectively erased or deleted all the other songs, albums and playlists off the iPhone. This meant I had to re-sync them all again.

Candidly, I think this is a serious design error. There should be some warning that you're about to delete an entire batch of songs. For example, somewhere in iTunes or on the iPhone, Apple could specify a warning, "You are about to delete all other playlists and albums off your iPhone. Do you want to proceed?"

One supposes we Users are supposed to know these quirks, but I sure did not and logically it did not make sense.

From now on, I'm going to leave my sync settings to transfer everything in iTunes.
-----

At the risk of sounding like a smart-ass, you DID tell iTunes to sync ONLY that one item.

It does. That is what syncing does - it puts on the device what you told the software to put on and it removes everything else. You are SYNCING, not "copying".

-----

I have to agree with Jeffery, it says sync, not "add to current existing contents on the iDevice".

-----

I had that happen before too, it's a pain but as long as your other music is still stored on iTunes, you should be able to put it back on the iPhone with another sync.

-----

It's a learning experience. For some folks EVERY learning experience is a pain.

-----

I wouldn't say that, I just think Apple would do better to have iTunes give clearer prompts for those who are new to it. Then once you learn what it is, include an option not to receive that help message any longer if you choose not to see it.

-----

iPhone and iTunes has lots of flaws...To avoid such problems, I manually backup all the iPhone contents on my PC in case of a crash or something like that I can resync all...takes a little time but works...

-----

In advanced options there is a checkbox to enable a warning if you're about to delete more than 5% of the iPhone's contents. 'course you have to know that's there.

-----

I could not find this either in the menu bar>advanced or among the options on the various sync screens. My phone is a 3Gs, maybe it's this option is in a different place?

-----

Synchronize, not copy.

There is a manual process if you wish. You just have to check/uncheck a box on the lower part if you select the iPhone.

Also, there is an option to sync only checked items, if that might be useful.

-----

Candidly? I think this is a serious user error.

-----

I think that some people don't actually understand, *really* understand, what "sync" means until this happens to them. I think many of us have probably done something similar. In my case, I set up a smart playlist for syncing music and failed to notice that multiple conditions were linked with AND, not OR, operators by default. Imagine my surprise when nearly all of my music disappeared from my iPod ...

-----

The problem with the "sync" method is the sync itself...

When you "sync" what does it mean?

- Will the iphone will have the contents of the computer OR the computer will have the contents of the iphone OR the newer override the older?

I believe the last one is the correct one on iTunes world.

It should have 3 options when you connect the device:

computer - > iphone, iphone => computer or the newer will override the older...that is it.

It is never clear, and should show more explicitly which ways the data will travel...simple as that.

That should be for all the sync applications out there...

My two cents...

-----

Well, I have to admit I'm confused with this one. But per my observation, Contacts - newer over older, Apps - it's complicated (if you delete from iTunes, and not on the iPhone, it gets back).

Music, Photos, Videos - all from the computer.

White phone

So I'm trying to order a new iPhone thru Apple, but they want a $36 activation fee. I think the $18 at ATT is nutsy since I paid that "one time activation fee" already. Likely more than once. Suggestions ?
-----

18 dollars is less than 36 dollars. And get used to it. We all pay it. That's the price of upgrading to a new phone. Otherwise if you don't want to pay it, don't upgrade.

-----

" one time activation fee " per phone. It's just the way it is.

-----

Yes, but often times the store will offer to waive it, or you can ask.

Not sure about after the fact.

-----

When I got my first iPhone bill, I called ATT & did get the "upgrade" fee removed -- but then, I was a *new* customer, not at all upgrading but rather jumping over from VZ.

Call ATT when you get the bill, or even sooner if you can. It can't hurt to try!

The sales staff can't do everything the service-reps can. I also had to get my phone from an ATT store since Apple didn't know anything about the Senior Plan.

-----

Senior plan?

-----

It's a voice plan for the over-65 crowd. $10 less than the least expensive "regular" plan, fewer minutes, no rollover.

I had to sign up for it in person & provide proof of age.

-----

Thanks, got a couple years to go, but it doesn't sound like it's worth $10...

-----

I was curious as well.

They also have a 15% discount for veterans.

Invalid Address message when trying to update apps

Started having this problem yesterday, cannot update my apps through the app store on any of my devices. Lately, It has been asking me to verify the security code on my credit card quite often as well. Now I can't get beyond this error message. Any ideas?
-----

I was getting the same thing. Looks like Apple wants you to verify information on your account. Go to apple.com and login to your account and follow the directions, and everything should start working again.

-----

Apple changed the system to control a valid address.

you can use a address of an hotel, save and retype your original address and re-save.

-----

Thanks for the help, that worked. Let's see, I posted on here and got a helpful response within 12 hours, I had e-mailed Apple support at the same time..still no response. Thank you group!

prob 1: How to turn off safari when not wanted.
I don't want to pay for the band width/minutes that safari uses every time it logs in. I only need it twice a year.

Prob 2: Also it appears to be down loading msgs and not leaving on server so that I can read on Macs.

Go into your mail settings and tell it to leave on the server or do not delete. Consider switching from POP to IMAP if your service provider has it.

Safari on iPhone

On my iPhone 3GS, how do I clear all browsing history in Safari. (Think I've found that, but it doesn't seem to work; the same dumb movie keeps coming back every time I launch Safari.) And, how do I clear the cache and any cookies? It's simple in Safari on the Mac, History in the menu bar, then clear.

In Firefox, there's a Tool>Clear all history which includes browsing, cache and cookies.

Also, is there any other security feature on the iPhone that I should be aware of?

-----

If the same movie comes back each time you launch safari, hit the "new window" button in the lower right-hand corner of the screen, then hit the X on the window that hosts the video.

-----

Hit the double box icon at the bottom right and the x the page out.

-----

Same topic - is there a way to refresh Safari without going to the top?

-----

If you tap the top bar (where the time is displayed), Safari (and many other apps) will instantly scroll to the top of the page, where a single additional tap will trigger a reload.

-----

In the Settings > Safari scroll down and tap clear History, clear cookies and clear cache.

When in Safari, tap on bookmark icon, then keep tapping on the bookmark tab, until you reach the History folder icon, tap on it. You should see a Clear History button.

Transfer from iPhone to iTunes

When I plug in my 3GS to iTunes I get a message that there is a system update for my phone, I click the choice to update it and receive the following error message:

"There are purchased items on the iPhone "Bob Newman's iPhone" that have not been transferred to your iTunes library. You should transfer these items to your iTunes library before updating the iPhone. Are you sure you want to continue?"

Naturally I choose no. I am a rookie and a lot of this is over my head but when I sync it's supposed to do everything automatically. The note does not specify how to transfer these items and naturally when I do a search of the help file for the word transfer it says that nothing is found. I have other problems with syncing also but, one at a time.
-----

Apple iPhone itunesApple iPhone

That message is telling you that you have download apps directly to the phone since your last sync. Just sync and then install the iOS update and all will be fine.

Perhaps I didn't make myself clear, I have synced many times & still get that message.

Someone suggested following this link:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1848
But I can't find anything about authorizing a computer there.

-----

I've gotten that message before. I sync to make sure everything is on the computer and then the next time I say yes I'm sure I want to continue. Everything was backed up.

-----

Assuming that you are using a PC, if you right click on the phone in iTunes one of the options in the popup menu will be to transfer apps to iTunes. If yo do that and still get the message ignore it. I have been getting the same erroneous message since the update before last.

-----

Same here. I get that all the time since a few updates back. Just ignore that message.

-----

Before I update, I have made it a habit to select my device from the left-hand side of the iTunes window and use Control Click on the name of the device (Mac) or right click (PC). If you do this, you will have additional options, one of which is transfer purchases. This allows you to transfer any apps that you might have bought on your iPhone or iPad directly (rather than from purchasing thru iTunes app). This will transfer those purchases (free and paid) from your device to the APPS tab of iTunes. I then proceed to update or sync after the transfer (i.e, the wheel next to the device name quits spinning). If you do this, you won't get that message and thus avoid having to answer the question.

I find the way that Apple has worded this is CONFUSING. Hope this helps.

I also try to make it a practice, to sync my device before I do an update (even if I don't have any thing to sync). This just gives me a good backup should something go wrong during the update. In fact, this happened just yesterday and my iPad was unplugged accidentally while updating and I had a good backup to restore everything.

-----

If you have synced then the message is wrong. I have gotten the same message lately and it is wrong. You can ignore it.

iPhone, Poor reception

Apple iPhone attApple iPhoneRecently my phone rception had been poor. Some times its clear as a bell, and the next moment it is very poor. Any suggestions or do I have to live with it?

Have you tried calling your phone service provider? It's impossible for anyone over the Internet to diagnose this problem.

-----

I had that problem, mostly at home. But based on advice from a tech at AT&T I have gotten into the habit of turning my iPhone completely off ( for at least 0:01) and then back on. So it can re-register with the network. This has noticeably improved mt reception. I have more bars and much more consistent service. Give it a try.

-----

Save some time and turn "Airplane Mode" ON in Settings, then turn it OFF again.

-----

A good place to start with any problem with the iPhone, or any computer for that matter, is a re-boot. For the iPhone, hold both the top button and the home button together until you see the apple logo.

-----

I'm not picking on you, but everyone that doesn't tell us what you have.

You know it would be a lot easier if people would give us a little more info about their system.

If you are on AT&T then get Mark the Spot from the iTune App Store. It give them the info they need to look into the problem. If Verizon has something like that use it.

-----

I used mark the spot so much at home that att gave me a micro cell for my house.

Too many songs for memory?

Apple iPhoneApple iPhoneAnybody know what will happen if I try to exceed memory capacity with too many songs on a 3G 8GB?

Will it crash or ask me to modify content? Anyone been there done that?

It won't sync will tell you that what you are trying to sync will not fit

-----

How do you mean? iTunes checks the total when syncing and won't let you exceed the space available. It will ask you what you want to do.

-----

When I've tried to sync "too much" to any device, the sync process pops up with a "not enough room" message; that gives you a chance to make whatever changes you want.

Check the "memory bar" on the screen as you make your choices, you can see when you're getting close & decide then what/how much to un-choose.

-----

That will work , I just didn't want to do something I'd regret.

-----

you don't have to wait until you sync. You can see the total in the bottom bar of the iTunes window. It totals whatever you have selected, from selected (high- lighted) tracks to playlists to the whole music library.

Using air print with 3Gs & iOS version 4.3.2

Apple iPhone pirnterApple iPhoneI have a 3Gs iPhone with iOS version 4.3.2. I used to be able to print wirelessly with my old HP 6122 (a USB, not a wireless printer) using an app called airprint (which no longer seems to be in the app store). Now when I try to use Air Print, I get a little notice come up saying "incorrect password for the HP deskjet 6122 with space for me to put in a user name and password. Has anyone else had this problem? I talked to Apple today and they said that Air Print now only will work with wireless printers and gave me a list, all being HP printers.

I have had 2 suggestions:
1. use an app called PrintBureau....anyone familiar with that? It costs $15

2. Enable the (Hidden) Administrator Account on Windows 7 or Vista Many people familiar with prior versions of Windows are curious what happened to the built-in Administrator account that was always created by default. Does this account still exist, and how can you access it? The account is created in Windows 7 or Vista, but since it's not enabled you can't use it. If you are troubleshooting something that needs to run as administrator, you can enable it with a simple command.

Note: You really shouldn't use this account for anything other than troubleshooting. In fact, you probably shouldn't use it at all.

Try Airprint Activator for Windows. I use it, works like a charmed. Created my 7 year old science project on my ipad and printed the stuff thru Airprint Activator.

-----

Unfortunately, that is the same program that I've been using but now won't work since I upgraded my iphone software to version 4.3.2.

-----

That's a bummer. I haven't tried after the upgrade to 4.3.2, I'll have to check on that. Luckily I only upgraded my iPod touch 4 to 4.3.2. I usually use PrintCentral to print, it's not free though and I don't have to leave my PC or Mac on just to print. Worth the hassle. PrintCentral is cheaper than PrintBureau if you just need printing without the PDF conversion capability.
