How about a word processor? Documents To Go creates, edits, views and syncs MS Office Word and Excel files. When installed on an iPhone (iPad, iPod Touch) it connects to the mail app to send documents or view received documents.

Undeletable mail

I have two mails which show dates of 1.1.70 which cannot be deleted. When I press the edit option no circle appears for me to tick to delete them. First there was one and now there are two. They can't be opened either. I think I should try a sync and see what happens.

Broken glass on 3Gs

BUT, here we go.
The 3Gs was dropped and the screen is shattered. The phone still works. Yeah, I know, this question has been asked here a number of times, but until you actually NEED the information, you (*I*) don't pay particular attention to the answer.

So, who's had good luck with a repair facility?

While I'm tempted to do this myself, I'm going to defer to the people who do it everyday.

It was going to be $200 to fix mine at the Apple store, but there was a guy advertising on craigslist for $60. He drove to my place, fixed it in about 10 minutes, and did a great job. Apparently a lot of folks do it as a side business...

I actually work at a repair company called myphonemd, We can be found on the web at www.myphonemd.net we repair pretty much any phone that we can get parts for, and use quality OEM parts and offer a year warranty on all of our repairs. Our turnaround time on phones such as the 3g and 3gs is 10 minutes with the price being either 79.99 for 3g and 89.99 for 3gs, and iphone 4 is 20 minutes and the cost is 169.99. The iphone 4's are a little harder to repair since you actually have to go into this phone from the back and remove all components to get to the display. The digitizer and LCD are fused together on this one so you cant change just one or the other.

In preparation for our annual family letter I looked over the "last 12 months" of iPhotos and noted that in several instances there were as many as 8 copies of the same photo, all next to each other in iPhoto. They all came from my iPhone camera. Photos from other sources appear only once.

Why is this happening?

Can I delete the duplicates without having to scroll the entire year's collection of photos?

Most likely when you imported the pics you didn't delete them from the iPhone so when you connected the iPhone again it imported them again. Generally, iPhoto asks whether you want to re-import them again though. Maybe you turned off that nag dialog somewhere in the past.

Second answer, maybe. I've always just scrolled through and deleted the extras though, so I don't know.

Copy Itunes Library / Multiple Libraries

I have an issue that I know is not unique and I am sure to which there is a simple answer. My itunes library is over 128GB. Yes, I am a pack-rat. On top of that, I have over 50GB more music to add to it. The problem is that I only have around 60GB left on my MBP. The drive is 500GB and I really do not want to invest any more into this laptop.

What I would like to do is copy and synchronize my current library to a network drive. Then be able to access both libraries from iTunes. Once I know that I have the two libraries established, I can start deleting the semi-duplicates from my local drive along with music that I won't likely sync to my iPhone. I can then start adding music to the network library and from there, copy music to my local drive to sync to the iPhone.

As I stated before, there is most likely a simple solution to my issue.

The easiest would be just to have the network library then the local machine only has the iTunes files (library index, etc) and point to the network library for the actual files.

Another suggestion might be to keep your library on a external drive. That is what I do. My iTunes library rests securely on a 1TB drive. I just plug it up when I want to add/delete/or change my selection of music on my older iPod and iPhone.

Now in all fairness I should say I have very little purchased music from iTunes. My music all 500G is from other sources.

The Post Office says the safe way to mail is to remove batteries from gadgets.

My question is does the no-battery rule pertain to iPhones?

iPhones batteries are not soldered but they do require you to remove the screen and the board to get to them. They are stuck to the housing by an adhesive. I've actually changed out hundreds of batteries as well as dock ports, screens, cameras etc. It can be done just not recommended if your not familiar with the internal components of the device. The iPod touch batteries and the first gen iPhone batteries on the other hand are soldered.

I have the iPhone 3G. I had the earbuds in talking on the phone and my coat rub up against my earbud wire. Static electricity popped and my left speaker on the phone has gone out. Even if I hook my phone up to an outside source the left side is not working. I was hoping it would be my earbuds but they are fine. Can this be repaired or am I down to the right side only for speakers.

I guess you blue out the left audio amp on the 3G. I doubt it could be fixed and if it could be fixed it would be expensive. I assume you don't have Apple Care or it has run out. So you only have two choices, live with only one speaker or replace the phone. You should be able to find another 3G for a low price or wait until you are allowed an upgrade.

but the volume would not be adjustable. I tried it with my iPhone 2G and a pair of Sennheiser PMX 60 headphones. The volume was too loud for me, but this would depend on the headphone or earbuds you have. You might also need an inline volume control on your headphones or ear buds such as this:

If you are looking at the front of your phone (home page), the sound normally only comes out of the bottom left speaker to begin with. For instance, if I cover the hole on the bottom, just left of the place I plug in my phone to charge, the sound is muted.

Are you sure that you're not just now noticing that sound only (normally) comes out of one speaker/hole?

I'm looking for a Wiki-type application that syncs to a Windows desktop.

I find that I am in need of a personal "knowledge base" that I can carry around with me on my iPod Touch as well as do most of the data maintenance from a full size computer. Is there such a thing?

I've previously tried HanDbase, but can't stand its desktop app and I find its handheld app to be barely usable. I do have ListPro, but as good as that is for what I use it for, it appears to be unsuited to what I am currently looking for.

Trunk Notes is a superb wiki for iOS.
It doesn't really sync to the desktop though. It does connect to the desktop via wifi though so that you can type on the desktop. It also backs up to Dropbox.

I have not found what you are looking for either. In the meantime, for freeform text, webpage content, and pdfs, I use Evernote on the desktop and on my iPhone. It is nicely searchable.

For structured text data, ie records and fields, I export delimited text from my desktop database app and import the structured text into the iPhone using CSV Touch, which is very good at providing sorts and searches for the data and has "data detectors" for launching urls and dialing the phone from data in its records. Data in CSV Touch cannot be edited on the iPhone, only viewed and copied.

I found that the default calendar program was too weak to meet my needs, but if you are willing to allow Google Calendar to help you out, it will sync with both your iPhone and MS Outlook. And Google Calendar on its own offers high quality schedule management and sharing.

If you are looking for a more functional iPhone calendar app, I suggest that you take a look at Pocket Informant. It also syncs with Google Calendar, and offers more display, scheduling, and task-planning options than does the iPhone's default calendar.

I spent over 30 minutes trying to sign up for Google calendar. I entered the scrambled word at least 20 times only to find that I had not entered it correctly. I never got it right so I gave up. Is it a "d" or a "c" with an "l" next to it. That's why I gave up.

I only need a calendar to remember astronomy events like the upcoming lunar eclipse.

Google definitely has a preset shared moon calendar. Not sure why it was so hard for you to create a Google account, I just created another one for storage and took less than a minute for GMail, GCal, GDocs, and GVoice...

If you just want Calendar (and/or mail and/or notes) then setttings > Mail/contacts/calendar > Add > Google > username/address/password and turn On which of the three options you want. If you want to sync Contacts and Calendar then you need to use Exchange instead of Google username is full email address, password, next then server is m.google.com

jabra issue

I have a Jabra BT530, and when I answer a call by tapping answer on my iphone it switches to the phone, and I have to manually switch back to the bluetooth.

If I answer by using the button on the bluetooth, then it works fine. When I make a call on the phone it also works fine. Any ideas if there's a way to change this behavior so I can answer a call on the phone and it stays connected to the bluetooth? I have an iphone 4 with ios 4.2.

I have the Motorola HK202 and it does not suffer that problem on my iPhone 4 iOS 4.2. So maybe it is just certain brands. Is yours Bluetooth 1.1 or 2.0 spec?

I just got an unlocked iphone here in germany and i can't purchase any new apps because my previous iphone/itunes account is a u.s. one. unfortunately my asus laptop -only 6 months old, btw--the charger died (look up charger issues if you ever plan to buy an asus anything!) which I didn't realize until the battery was almost dead, so I can't access itunes from a computer that is authorized.

my new phone is activated and working, and I can ceate a new account here in germany, but I don't know how that will affect my other purchases and/or access
to certain apps. and costs of things. I had been able to use my vpn to access
itunes from my laptop to purchase stuff before.

I am using iDisk/MobileMe to host a small personal website.

I would like to be able to edit on my iPhone the .html files that reside on my iDisk, but all the iPhone apps I have tried so far, that are capable of opening files that are on an iDisk, *renders* (like a web page) any .html file I attempt to open, rather than opening it as editable text.

There seem to be a few iPhone apps that will open .html files for editing that are on ftp servers, but I need an app that will open .html files for editing that are on iDisk.

Does anyone know of such an iPhone app?

I got it when it went on sale for a couple bucks, it's kinda pricy at $16 but it'll connect to virtually anything, including iDisk.

The editing is a tad convoluted as you connect to the source, copy down the file, go into the document store, edit the file, copy to clipboard and then paste it back to the source, but it works really well. I use it to do quick edits of my various websites through FTP.

EzShare Pro also supports VNC and Remote Desktop.

It's a really fantastic app for those on the go, but it is pricy without another sale.

I have a iPhone 4 and use Motorola S9 wireless headsets when I work out. This morning the transmission was choppy. Songs would drop out and come back on and it seemed to be exaggerated as I moved around. Is there a way to fix this transmission issue?

I have had similar issues with my iPhone 4 and Jawbone ICON. Sometimes everything is fine, and sometimes choppy. I didn't know if it was a problem with the phone or the ICON, but if you are having the same problem with another brand of earpiece, it appears it could the the phone. Maybe a future update
will address this.

I use a Sony wireless headset and it gets choppy when used together with Nike+.

The receiver of the Bluetooth headset is on the right piece, so I transferred the iPhone on the right arm. Problem solved.

That has happened to me when I'm out and about. *I* always felt the BT was getting interrupted by someone else's BT. Seems to happen a lot with bluetooth sets I have used. So I have my motorockers SR9 for around the house and use wired headsets while out and about.

I have a S9-HD headset and the same thing happens.

I talked to Apple, and this is what they said. It works.

Opening settings, general, bluetooth, Motorola S9, and forget the device.
then turn off the bluetooth.
Then turn off the iPhone.
Turn on the iPhone
turn of the bluetooth.
re-syn the headset.

Works..

I've tried to just reboot, nope. I've tried to just re-syn, nope. I've tired to just turn off bluetooth and back on, nope.

So until there is a fix, this is what you have to do.

I happen about once a week for me. Both firmware 4.1 and 4.2.1 do the same thing.

I uninstalled all previous versions of iTunes and other apple software from my PC and cleaned registry. But this error pops and I cannot install. Is there some solution for this error?
