Sound quality of Iphone 4 speaker ?

Apple iPhone - Sound quality of Iphone 4 speaker ?

Since switching from my old Blackberry Storm to Iphone 4 (Verizon) I have been happy with the Iphone but the sound quality when using the speakerphone seems really poor, distorted audio...hard to understand. The BB seemed quite good. Anyone else notice poort audio on the Iphone 4 ?

Made the same switch. Not any problems with iPhone. Loving it and never looking back.

-----
I am amazed at how good the sound is on my iPhone4. I have replaced my radio with it. It is so small but so clear. With a rhapsody subscription I have created a almost never ending source of exactly what I want to listen to that is always with me.

-----
Yes, I dropped my satellite radio subscription and use the iPhone thru my car speakers, that works well. I was talking about the speaker in the phone, sounds very distorted on cell calls.

-----
Yes but using the internal speaker in the phone is so clear that I am using it as is.

-----
i am having trouble with the sould on every level. sounds like everyone is
trying ot talk underwater, on cell or speakeer.
i have been asked to repeat things many times.
i am going back to see what's going on.
could it be the softwear?

-----
If this is a new iPhone, check that the clear protective plastic has been removed from the face of the phone. It happens :)

-----
Or just partially remove upper and lower edge portions and cut notches of appropriate shape and size so that home button at lower edge and camera & speaker at the upper edge remain exposed. you can stick the rest back as screen protector. It is very good quality plastic and since no stylus is used , it will last you atleast a year.

-----
I found only one speaker is working on my phone when switched to speaker phone!!!!! Anyone could also help?????

-----
The iPhone only has 1 speaker. The other side is the microphone.

-----
It only has one speaker.

-----
Refer to:

http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html

The two grates at the bottom of the iPhone are _not_ both speakers. One is a microphone to pick up your voice when in phone mode. The other is a speaker. The speaker at the top of the phone is for when it is not in speaker phone mode.

Given the spacing between the two grates, even if they were both speakers, the sound would not be good stereo. If you are looking for stereo sound, then you need to connect it to some stereo speakers, by means of either the 30-pin connector or the stereo speaker jack.

Headphones

Apple iPhone - Headphones

I'm not looking to spend 399.0 on Dr Dre's but I do have a problem with the stock earbuds falling out alot so I was wondering if anyone used a headphone that was a decent price that was good sounding?

iPhone Headphones
Apple iPhone Headphones
I have the Sennheiser MM60 (over the head headband) which include a mic, and the Sennehiser PMX 60 (behind the head headband) which do not include a mic.

I like them both. Good clear sound. I set the iPhone iPod EQ to Bass Boost if I am in the mood for Rock.

Separately I bought the Griffin mic extension cord for the PMX 60.

Both of these are discontinued, but there is an extensive collection to be seen at the Sennheiser website.

-----
Correction, the MM60 are not discontinued and are available here for $65:

The PMX 60 may be discontinued but are available here for $58:

I have the Bose MIE2i headsets, $129.99 at Amazon.com. There are great! They come with 6 differant "tips" so you can find the most comfortable one.

-----
If "canalphones" (ones that go right in your ears and give good isolation from ambient sound) are OK, you won't get better value than the Sennheiser CX300. Look for the eco-packaged version at Amazon.

-----
I use Sennheiser PXC 450 with my iPod. They sound great and since they are noise cancelling I also use when them when I travel. I bought them on Ebay last year I think for about $250.00. My friend @ work swears by Shure earbuds SE 425/525 but they cost I think $400.00 +. I listened to them when he bought them and I was just amazed at the sound coming out of them. Concert like sound. They supposed to mold to your ear canal. Hope that helps.

-----
Other brands worth looking at if you are prepared to pay for quality are Ultimate Ears and Etymotic.

-----
I purchased Boise and wasn't happy in the long run until I got the Sony MDR-XB40EX

The sound is unbelievable and you shouldn't have to worry about them falling out.

-----
the problem with ear buds is they wont stay in my ears very well, thats why im looking for the headphone type.

-----
I don't like earbuds, but I'm happy with headphones that clip over the ear. I use reading glasses, & the Koss KSC75 hasn't been a problem with glasses. They were nder $20 & I got them in 11/08. Amazon has a lot of reviews.

-----
I realize that not everyone can afford them, but nothing beats the Klipsch.com ear buds, especially the X10i which have features exclusive to Apple products. PRices range from $49 to $399. And they're worth it.

Something like 16% of people under 30 already have permanent hearing loss/damage, much of it due to bad ear buds. Because the buds don't seal up the ear canal properly, they not only don't fit, but also tend to be played far louder than is healthy, just to drown out background sounds.

All the Klipsch products form to your ear canal, which means you get better sound and lower volumes. And the sound itself is unbeatable.

-----
I use the Sony from best buy for $35.

They are similar to the apple one but last longer and sound better.

There is two styles available now but I prefer the ones that sort of hang in your ear, they don't fall out as bad.

Static Electricity and my iPhone

Apple iPhone - Static Electricity and my iPhone

I have the iPhone 3G. I had the earbuds in talking on the phone and my coat rub up against my earbud wire. Static electricity popped and my left speaker on the phone has gone out. Even if I hook my phone up to an outside source the left side is not working. I was hoping it would be my earbuds but they are fine. Can this be repaired or am I down to the right side only for speakers.

iPhone Headphone
Earbud electricity on Apple iPhone Headphone
I guess you blue out the left audio amp on the 3G. I doubt it could be fixed and if it could be fixed it would be expensive. I assume you don't have Apple Care or it has run out. So you only have two choices, live with only one speaker or replace the phone. You should be able to find another 3G for a low price or wait until you are allowed an upgrade.

-----
You could connect to the dock connector using an adapter such as this:

SendStation - Products - PocketDock Line Out USB

http://sendstation.com/us/products/pocketdock/lineout-usb.html

but the volume would not be adjustable. I tried it with my iPhone 2G and a pair of Sennheiser PMX 60 headphones. The volume was too loud for me, but this would depend on the headphone or earbuds you have. You might also need an inline volume control on your headphones or ear buds such as this:

Koss 164210 VC20 In-Line Headphones Volume Controller
http://www.sjgreatdeals.com/kssvc20.html

-----
If you are looking at the front of your phone (home page), the sound normally only comes out of the bottom left speaker to begin with. For instance, if I cover the hole on the bottom, just left of the place I plug in my phone to charge, the sound is muted.

Are you sure that you're not just now noticing that sound only (normally) comes out of one speaker/hole?

Headphone recommendation iPhone 4

Apple iPhone - Headphone recommendation iPhone 4

I'm having a heck a time finding a quality set of headphones with an inline microphone and phone/music controls.

I would like the audio to be of a good enough quality for listening to a wide range of music. Audiophile quality is not necessary, but tiny, tinny speakers are not cutting it.

Speaker quality has not proven to be the biggest challenge, though. After trying five different sets of headphones, each one of them had the same problem--the mic is too low on the wire, too far away from my mouth/jaw for it to pick up my speech well. For the person on the other end to hear clearly, I have to either put my chin to my chest or hold the mic to my mouth, obviously defeating the handsfree intent.

I was trying to stay relatively inexpensive but am willing to entertain more costly solutions if it means good headphones with a useful mic. Wireless or wired.

iPhone Headphone
The Best choice Apple iPhone Headphone
Look for Plantronics 855 / 900 series, Jawbone Icon, or Blueant bluetooth headsets - just make sure they have A2DP stereo (preferably with AVRCP controls) as well as Handsfree/Headset profiles - you can use them for both phone calls (microphone right by your mouth) and listening to audio.

-----
In my opinion, the Apple ear buds that come with the iPhone 4 seam to meet all your requirements. It's all I use.

-----
The Scosche IDR655m have done very well in reviews.

http://www.scosche.com/products/sfID1/210/sfID2/320/productID/1722

This brand is new to me but they seem to make quite a few accessories worth looking at.

-----
I recommend the ZAGG Smartbuds.

-----
me too - I bought a pair recently and love them!

-----
This is an area where you get what you pay for. The only sub-$50 earbuds I've found that sounded decent were from Sony, but they are earbuds only, no mic and no controls. I have not found a phone set from them. Note that I'm only talking about wired sets, I have had generally lousy results of one form or another from BT headsets.

Then you are looking for something that costs at least $50. How much more than that depends on how good you want the sound.

Do you care about bulk? One of my wired headsets is from Shure, I don't recall the model number but I got it via Apple. Great sound, both in and apparently out (out, at least with my Blackberry anyway), inline controls and mic on one of the earphone wires positioned so it's just below my chin and it has a clothing clip to keep it in position. However, because the control block is rather large (for the headphone type) it doesn't wrap small enough to fit in the pocket I want to carry my headset in. So I only use it at home.

For a more portable unit, I have one of the less expensive VModas, with the rubberized wires. It doesn't sound quite as good and sometimes the other end has problems hearing me, but it does wrap up nicely. I previously had a VModa Vibe II, with the cloth wrapped wires. That one sounded good in and out with my old iPhone, but didn't physically last because the wires are poorly designed: the cloth wrapping frayed and came apart at the jack, exposing the wires underneath.

Better sound in than the VModa is Kipslich (sp?). However, I have no idea how its mic is, as I've only used it with an iTouch. The control/mic block is at the Y split which dangles against my chest.

-----
Check out skullcandy I like the sound it's portable & costs around $50

-----
Go to best but and buy the black Sony ones that look like the origionall apple ones $32. They are louder and better. The volume up/down does not work on my 3g. I picked up a spare set just the other day and noticed they have a ear bud style also but I prefer the style that won't fall out of my ear. I use them 12 hours a day.

-----
I use the Scosche IDR655m and I love 'em.

The in-line mic is high on the cable and the controls are easy to use.

I've tried lots of earbud types and these seem to meet my needs currently -- good sound and easy to use for phone or music.

List is about $100 but I think you can find them for less.

The Zagg smart earbuds with microphone are selling for $37.00 on Amazon as of now (12:09 pm 11/17/2010 ).

Bizarre Headphone Problem

iPhone Headphone - Bizarre Headphone Problem
I have a 16G 3G. After a month or two of use, the volume on one of the earbuds (the side with the microphone) faded and died. So I went back to AT&T, and they replaced it. Happened again --- same side, same way. Got it replaced. This happened two more times, including one aftermarket set. I finally convinced Apple to give me a new phone. Well, you guessed it: it happened again.

I'll get this last set replaced again (phone is still under warranty), but does anyone have any ideas? This has happened both before and after the OS upgrade. Mostly, I have been using that Plantronics stereo bluetooth set that was on sale at Amazon a while ago, so it's not that huge a deal, but it bugs the crap out of me. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. BTW, the Apple "geniuses" are stumped.

It's happening with both the OEM buds and it happened with one aftermarket set. And the funny thing is that I am easy on my gear. The really weird part is that it is always the same side.

BTW, I have ruled out subjective and error factors, like maybe the problem is with my ear, maybe it's my imagination, maybe it's just the song, etc.

It's bizarre and baffling...

.. What are you doing to the poor ear buds? I have the first pair of Apple ear buds from my first iPod Shuffle when they were first released that still work fine. If you have ruled out the iPhone (having an electrical) issue by having it replaced, I don't know what else to suggest.
