A texting question..

Apple iPhone - A texting question..

First, I don't text and, for the most part, have not felt any need for that service. But, my grown kids *do* text and occasionally they send one my way.

SInce I have not paid for texting in my ATT plan, I do not get the messages.

I stopped at the ATT store today to inquire about the plans and costs.

As many of you already know, the options are few. Basically the least I can pay is $5/month per phone for some set number of text messages.

SInce I might use perhaps ten or so a month, five bucks seems a bit high. So my wife got me wondering if there isn't some app that can take advantage of the data surplus that we have and somehow create the ability to send/receive text messages -- outside of the ATT text plans.

Thoughts?

iPhone ATT
Woman Apple iPhone ipad
I use text + (plus). It allows texting without charge. It is a bit tricky to set up conversations but once set up there is a specific number for each one. I do not delete the conversation I start with each person so the number to each person doesn't change. Each person can save the number and text to you easily. I have used it for 8 months. It is reliable as far as I can tell. There are complete directions for starting a text conversation.

-----
That's strange. I don't have a texting plan, but the couple of times a month someone sends me one, I get it. I'm charged .20

-----
That is what AT&T told me--20 cents per message.

-----
That's the way it works for me too.
Shows up on the bill as another charge.

Are the kids sending to the correct #?

-----
Yeah, that's how it used to be for me. I think it changed when I upgraded to the iP4

-----
I have an iP4 & no texting plan.
I get charged 20cents per text-message.
I think you need to check your settings & call ATT about this if it's not working for you. Even if you don't *use* the feature you should have it *available* in case you do want it.

-----
Let's you send and receive SMS from the app. Also has a PC version. You will be given a Chikka number which is based on your original phone number only with some prefixes. Then let your children send their SMS to you through your chikka number. They will be charged extra for sending though. But they won't mind hopefully.

-----
I use TextFree unlimited. It is free app and you can text and receive messages without charge. You are assigned a phone number to give to others. People who use regular AT&T SMS can send to your special number. Works great for the few that I give my text number.

My 6 year old and 9 year old granddaughters have an account on TextFree Unlimited on old iPhones that we have setup as iPod Touches with no AT&T service and we text back and forth at no cost to any of us.

The immediate family, husband, kids and grandkids all use it and send text messages all the time. My daughter uses it on her iP4. My husband and I use on ip3GS and it even works to send to other non iphone users.

Hope this helps. When I do get a regular text message on my 3GS I am charged the per text fee of 20 cents per text, 30 cents per photo. You can also have AT&T block all text messages so that you won't incur these extra fees if you like.

-----
Just download that app for free texts. Like text free. So you don't have to use text messaging.

-----
As I mentioned in my initial post, the visit to the ATT store was not too helpful. The person just gave me the quick review of plans that are available.

I was in a bit of a rush so I didn't fully explain that I'd previously gotten texts at 20 cents a pop.

Anyway, I called ATT and got the most helpful customer service person imaginable.

Turns out that texting (for the per msg fee) had gotten turned off on my account.
(Who knows how that happened!)

And, the 200 message plan had been activated on my wife's iPhone -- we had not ordered it.

We quickly got it straightened out -- including a test text from ATT to my phone, and the cancellation of the 200 msg plan.

BTW, the reason I had not noticed the fee on my bill was the variable nature of the billing after changes with the iP4 upgrade.

So, thanks to all who suggested various apps and other solutions.

-----
Do you have the (free) ATT app on your phone?
Makes it easy to check what your plans are & what your usage has been.

I know what you mean about variable bills -- I'm currently trying to sort out the bills from ATT & Verizon after making my switch. Even though I was a brand new ATT customer my first bill included a charge for an *upgrade*! which I quickly got removed. VZ also charged me for a month of service because they only suspend, don't disconnect right away after a number port-out, they wait a while ("to be sure it goes through successfully" they say) & then do the disconnect & credit for the post-exit non-service. (I'm supposed to know this or something? sheesh! another cust. svc. call)

That's why I want paper bills! easier to spread out & peruse.

I think they do these things on purpose (if not on purpose, at least not trying not to....) and hope we Just Won't Notice. A few (hundred? thousand? zillion? "upgrade" $18 charges for *new* customers who might not notice in the confusion & you're talking Real Money. I have no way of knowing if VZ really would have credited me my (non) service & stopped my month-to-month contract if I hadn't called about it.

-----
No, I did not have the ATT App, but I do now.
Two quick reactions:

WOW, that End User License Agreement that you're required to approve/accept is a doozy.

I am not a lawyer, but that thing gave a lot of them a lot of work.

And because it was *so* much more detailed than anything I've read for an app, I went through it pretty thoroughly.

But, most interesting is that I discovered via the app that my wife's phone has two services, both of which incur monthly charges which were not ordered. (I turned them off via the app).

Rest assured that I will scour the next bill carefully!

-----
the pay per Text at 20¢ each is automatic. Something is wrong if it was not working, and you had no Text plan at all. The per text plan is a minimum requirement.

If the App showed you getting two for charge services, turning them off by means of the App will not get you a credit for any charges. Besides making the EULA in-descipherable, all telcos' billing is the worst accounting I have ever seen, and is only designed to baffle with bull, instead of clarifying things. It will take you months to get any credits back for services you may have been charged.

It is ok for them to take months for a refund, but they expect you to pay in full each month.

I would call them, ask them to review your services for each account with you, and to initiate any refunds, now. Be sure to get a name, ticket number, and notes, although you will never be able to get back to that person and if they ever do follow up, that your lucky stars.

And while you are at it, ask them about FAN discount, or senior discount if those apply. FAN discounts are where your company may have an arrangement for their employees to receive a discount. It was not common knowledge where I used to work, and they were all over North America. Senior discount is if you take a different minimal plan. I don't think it is that good.

Block a person's number

Apple iPhonoe - How to block a person's number

Is there a way that I can block a person's number instead of changing my number altogether??

iPhone Tutorial
Girl of Apple iPhone Tutorial
Unfortunately not... You can set that contact to a silent ringtone but there isn't much else you can do. You might look into google voice you can get a little more control that way, but this is a big fall down for me with the iPhone.

You can also go through AT&T and they have some blocking mechanism that costs about 5 bucks a month which might help you.

The last resort I would use is changing my number. I've had the number longer than the jerk whose number you're blocking...

-----
I had to block daily calls from 000-000-0000 by paying 4.99 per month for a
feature called Smart limits which AT&T will be glad to sell you.

It was intended to monitor and control kids cell phone use.

-----
My other phone, an O2 Windows Mobile, can do it via an app called O2 phone plus. But I found no luck with iPhone. I just assigned a silent ringtone. But it's not good enough especially when you are in the middle of an activity with the phone and that unwanted caller suddenly butts in, but I do not want to touch "Reject". I sure hope Apple people would think about that for the next update.

iphone-ipad sync via mobileme - slooow

Apple iphone-ipad sync via mobileme - slooow

I have an iPad and a original 2G iPhone, both running iOS 3x

Both are set up to with push notification (every 15 minutes) switched on and sync'd to MobileMe.

I am finding that synchronisation via the 'Cloud' is very slow. It can take a day for items I add to the iPad calendar to appear on the the iPhone, by which time it's too late...though I think this does demonstrate that the settings are ok (?)

I'm using the excellent Omnifocus on each one, and again OF on the phone does look for the database on MobileMe but doesn't always find it. Eventually it will.

The Phone seems to be the temperamental one. It will fail to log onto MobileMe email occasionally unless restarted.

First if it is set to push that is instantly, if it is set to 15 minutes that is Fetch not push.

Second, it should be nearly instantly - if I add something to my iPad it shows up on my phone, all computers, etc within a minute - vice versa, at least through MMe and Google.

Bumpers case

Apple iPhone - Bumpers case

I just got my FREE black Bumpers case for my iPhone 4. It fits nicely over the iPhone4 including my ZAGG invisiShield protectors on front and back. I love this case!

The only thing is my car chargers do not fit through this case but I am hoping that the standard Apple USB sync cable does work because I have an adapter for it in my car.

I have generally been the person who would cover the unit completely and not just the sides. So I didn't expect to really like this case. But I really do. I guess I like it because I do have the ZAGG that protects the back from scratches so the bumper provides the protection around the sides and also protects from the death-grip attenuation problem.

So for those of you considering the Bumpers as the case you will use, I say go for it. But get a ZAGG professionally installed first!

iPhone Case
Apple iphone Case
Speaking of cases for the iphone 4 I ordered a Speck Pixelskin HD black (the only color available). Apple says delivery late September which is awfully SLOW. Since people are getting their bumper cases right away I'm wondering if the non-Apple cases are shipping out sooner than projected. Has anyone received any non-Apple free cases yet?

Where iPhone photos go?

Apple iPhone - Where do iPhone photos go?

The sync seems to take phoptos off the computer and add the to the iphone. How do you get photos off the iphone and where are they stored by default?

iphone photography
View from car for apple iphone Photography
I'm not what you mean here but here goes. The photos are stored in a folder on your PC that you tell iTunes to copy (sync) to your iPhone. If you remove the photo from that folder, the next time you sync, iTunes will remove it from your iPhone.

-----
I have a MacBook Pro and v4.0.1 on my iPhone. *I need step-by-step directions* for storing my 2,000+ iPhone photos & vids onto an external HD. I think it would be to go ahead and sync the photos & vids from phone to computer, then find the photos (WHERE?), copy to an external HD, then trash all I don't want off the computer. ???

----
This is simple but time consuming...

On your MacBook Pro, plug in your iPhone like you are going to sync it. Then once plugged in, open iPhoto. It'll ask you if you would like to import your photos. Let it import your photos... this is what will take all the time, depending on your MBP's processing speed. If you have 2000+ photos, you might wish to do this just before bedtime, and finish-up in the morning. Maybe not that long, but you get the point.

You can edit the pix in iPhoto, and even add other photos from there then bring them back into the iPhone.

-----
If you then "right-click" on one of those images in iPhoto, the Mac will tell you the file itself ("show in finder" or some such). Then you know the directory/folder they're all in, if you want to back them up off the computer.

-----
But surely they would be backed up along with your other files as part of your regular backups? Many Mac users use Time Machine; many others use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner, or a combination of these.

-----
Yes, but I thought that the OP had expressed a desire to store their photos on a separate, external drive.

-----
If they are *also* on a separate external drive, that *is* a backup. If they are on an external *instead* of the internal drive, there is no backup unless a 2nd external is used for that.

-----
It does not automatically go to iPhoto for all users. I don't use iPhoto.

This is the only thing that I use iPhoto for.

-----
It needs backing up, wherever it is.

-----
If you are asking for a way to transfer photos from the iPhone to your computer. One way is to just email them to your main computer and save them in a place of your choice.

-----
I use ImageCapture.app to pull my iPhone photos to my MacBookPro. That way you can store the images wherever you want - say in a different folder than iPhoto designates.

ImageCapture.app is found in your Applications folder. You can download all images, or just one.

I almost never use iPhoto but do all editing in Photoshop Elements 6, a much better program.

Just my $2 worth (adjusted for inflation).

-----
iCapture is for Windows, not Mac (and it isn't in my Applications). How are you accessing it for your MacBook??

Other than that, I found 11,609 images in my Pictures folder on my MacBook HD. Okay. Ultimately I think I can save all the iPhone pix & vids to Pictures (HOW??), copy them to an external HD, then erase them off my MacBook.

When I went into iPhone sync in iTunes, it allows me to copy all my iPhoto pix into my iPhone, but that's all I see! NOT what I want.

-----
That may well be true, but *Image Capture* is an Apple application that comes with the operating system and is located in the Applications folder.

I must admit that I don't know for how many generations of the operating system it has been there, but for a few years at least.

-----
Squinting, with clenched teeth, one shoulder raised to protect myself.. I finally hit the button to get all the pix & vids off my iPhone and onto an external HD. I didn't foresee what happened. It wasn't Image Capture after all, which will bring images into the computer from a camera.. it did not see my iPhone. And btw, I never sync photos to or from the phone. I don't need all my photos everywhere, not on my iPad either.

What imported 2,000+ .jpg, .png and .mov files was the Import function of HP Photosmart Studio. I connected the phone and the ex HD to my MacBook Pro and the printer software saw the iPhone. I directed the Import to the ex HD and walked away as it worked for a long time.

Being a learning experience, I didn't know until afterwards that the iPhone files would also be recorded in All Images on the Mac HD: again, not what I wanted. That particular folder seems to be home to every "picture" that your computer has ever used.. like files called "brown" or "left corner" and every icon you never noticed as your innocently browse your way through life or download on purpose. I had downloaded a trial version of Word and it put every thing in the world on my computer. I didn't buy it at the end of thirty days but there remained all the stuffings of Word on my HD. That's ONE example.

What's on YOUR hard drive? Sit back and look at your computer. Just about everything you see is a picture; how much of it is recorded in All Pictures? No wonder I had 11,000 and more. Yes, a lot of my own JPGs, TIFs and NEFs are there. When the importing was finished, the 11,000+ had also duplicated itself to 22,000+ on the external HD. Don't ask me why. I painstakingly cleared the duplication. Do I need to sit with an expert before I do something like that again? YUP.

There's a Mac clean-up software that I see advertised sometimes - that might be a place to start too. Funny how you can happily use a machine for so long and know so little about what it's doing.

With a myriad of other things going on in life it'll be another day before I send any of the now safe-and-sound movies to YouTube (or CD) that I moved from the iPhone, since they were "too big to email," hence useless stored there. And I'm much more cautious about what pictures or movies I make with the iPhone now that I know the limitations for getting them OUT of the phone.

What's in - your ROOM! Do you have a bazillion CD's from years gone by with photos you'll use one day? What are we gonna do with all this (Stuff). I need help - but not with addition. Certainly not multiplication.

Location services

Apple iPhone - Location services

Location services drain the battery anyway. You can turn them on for whichever apps you need them for and keep them off for others. That way, if you have a photo you want people to know the location for, you can turn the location service on for that one, but not on for somewhere private.

iPhone Software
Apple iPhone Software
I just moved from a 2G iPod Touch to a 3G iPhone and had the same issue. My computer was a PC not a Mac. There may be more options on a Mac.

Here is what I found. The notes and contacts are not backed up in iTunes. This means you have to do it some other way. There are 3 choices allowed and they are Windows Address Book, Outlook, and Mobile Me. From what I can tell, Windows Address Book only does contacts where the other two do both. I believe there is a charge for using Mobile Me.

The initial versions of iOS did not allow backup of notes and calendar, at all. When it became available I had chosen Outlook as my backup location. When you open Outlook there is a button at the bottom left side of the screen that says Notes. I opened that and found my notes. The contact list in Outlook contained all my contacts from my iPod Touch.

I setup my new iPhone to sync with Outlook and all was good.

You make this choice on the iPhone screen in iTunes.

Just in case you wonder where Outlook stores this information, it is in the .pst file with all your other email.

Blocking Text Messages

Apple iPhone - Blocking Text Messages

I've been reading the threads concerning blocking incoming calls, and I have a similar issue with text messages.

A couple of years ago I signed up to receive updates during Formula 1 races. I enjoyed the service when I had unlimited texting but recently, to save money, I dropped my plan down to 200 texts per month. This service sends between 40 and 50 texts during a race weekend.

I have tried canceling the service but I'm still receiving the text messages, so I'm now looking for a way to block them.

iPhone Email
Matthew Settle apple iphone email
I don't think there is a way to block texting from a certain number - I know AT&T (and other US carriers) can block all SMS & MMS, jall MMS, incoming MMS, outgoing MMS, all SMS, all incoming SMS, or all outgoing SMS or any combination but can't do it from a certain number. When of our lines was receiving 'spam' texts they said they could only block all messages or all incoming or change the number (at a fee).

I finally traced down the unsubscribe code (required texting STOP 3 times to a certain number).

-----
Yeah that's what I was agreed of. I'll hunt it down. For today's race I got 110 text updates.

Does anyone know how Skype works?

iPhone call

Put it in airplane mode.

Then just find a place with free wifi and use skype.

Go to skype.com and learn about pricing, etc. It's cheap.

AIRPLANE MODE shuts off the wireless antenna.. not just the phone calling feature....

But you can then turn Wifi back on.

However, Airplane also shuts off the GPS receiver.

The simplest way to stop ONLY the cellular radio is to remove the SIM card.

-----
To learn about using Skype I made two separate accounts one on the Desktop (with a webcam) and the laptop. This was pre iDevices. Read the stuff on the skype site. Made the practice tests they suggested. Had one call the other using home wifi to connect both to the internet/skype. Had two photo in photo of myself, two different angles. Had to be careful with the mics and feedback, but it was good practice to learn how to use.

FarmVille App

iPhone - FarmVille App

I haven't upgraded to iOS4 yet and downloaded the FarmVille app. The first couple of times I opened it fine and was able to see the "tutorial" as well as play. Then for the next two days when I tried to open the app, I received an error message telling me that there was an issue with loading my farm. Then, all of a sudden, it worked fine again.

I've read the reviews at the App Store, and seen a couple of remarks on FarmVille Freak (unofficial fan site) - users are complaining that the app is slow, "jerky" (as far as movements), and many users can not open the app. (As a side note, thinking that there was something wrong with my iPhone 3G, I uninstalled and reinstalled FarmVille for iPhone at least a half dozen times.

Just like the online FarmVille game, the iPhone app needs tweaking to make it work all the time and to make it work more smoothly. You might want to go to www.zynga.com and go to their forums and voice your concerns there. It is a good site, lots of help from other users - there is a section for iPhone apps - and if you can't resolve your issue, you can report your problem directly to Zynga.

I have an upgraded iPhone 3GS to ios 4. I downloaded the new Farmville app and it won't even open. Is this app for the pure iPhone 4 too, just like iMovie?

This is getting upsetting. I've only hadj phone a couple of months and was told by AT&T at the time that the then upcoming upgrade to ios 4 would make my phone do everything the new phone would do. Now this is the second app I've wanted in the last week that only works with the pure iPhone 4.

I paid $399 for my iPhone too because it wasn't time to renew yet, and I still had to sign a two year extension including the extra monthly charge for internet. I'm feeling like I got ripped off.

You can also rearrange you apps while they are in the "shaky state".

You can also delete in iTunes as well. After you plug in your iPhone. Click on iPhone on the left. Then click on the apps tab. You'll see all the apps you purchased. The ones checked are the ones in your phone. If you unchecked them from left panel. They'll be deleted from your phone. You can also move your mouse over the app on the right and x will appear for you to click on. You can arrange the apps here as well.

Merge CDs into iTunes album properly

Iphone - Merge CDs into iTunes album properly

When I import several CDs and then merge those imported tracks into one iTunes album it often makes a mess. I merge the imported CDs by ctrl-clicking on the albums, going to get infos and editing the common data (composer, artwork, album title etc.). iTunes then does make a single album out of the cds but sometimes it merges the tracks in a silly order. This happens especially if the CDs are not known to Gracenote. In that case iTunes will merge the CDs in the order Track 01, Track 01, Track 01, ... instead of all tracks from CD1, then all tracks from CD2 etc.. Since there is no Undo if the merge I have to re-import all CDs and start again. Very annoying.

I can set the sort field to sort by "import date/time" which brings the tracks in the order I want (i.e. first all tracks from the first imported CD, then the next one ...) but when I sync my iTunes with the iPhone all the tracks are again in the order Track 01, Track 01, etc. (i.e. the CDs are interleaved).

I do not want to build a separate Playlist but want a single iTunes album with all the CDs that belong to a particular set in correct order.

How can this be done, please ?

iPhone iTunes
iphone girls itunes
To preserve (or enforce your own) order, you should use the fields Disc x of y as well as the track number.

But what is the advantage of merging albums?

Why do you have to re-import? You can select imported tracks at *any time* and use Get Info.

How to block a number on iPhone?

How to block a number on iPhone?

I have the need to block several numbers from repeatedly calling my phone. Any
suggestions on how to do this is greatly appreciated.

iPhone number
number iphone girls
One trick is to download a "silent" ringtone to your phone, and assign it to those numbers

...and that is precisely why I had asked about the silent ringer. It sure does give me a sense of satisfaction when I see that it works...kinda petty...but hey! LOL

-----
You can go to AT&T and set up a block of telephone numbers. There is a charge for this service.

-----
its a function of AT&t not the iPhone... you can as I do, save the number as a contact with a name of "DO NOT ANSWER"

LOL funny thing also, if you want to make the call not so annoying even when you have " do not answer"

Make their ringtone your favorite song. Double the satisfaction, you dont answer them, and you get to hear your favorite song hahaha

-----
I beg to differ... Not being able to block a number is a function of iPhone! I've had AT&T service for some 18 years now, and every smartphone I've had previous to the iPhone has allowed me to block a number from the phone itself. Nokia, motorola, palm etc. I was in utter shock when I moved to the iPhone and found I could not. Check the archives for my messages in July of 2009 for my shock and amazement.

I too just set the offenders up to be a "Do Not Answer" contact, with a "no ringtone" ringtone. I don't want to pay AT&T 4.99 extra a month for them to block the number, none of their other phones require it. That is just a way for AT&T to futher separate iPhone users from their money.

Wi-Fi problem follow up

iPhone - Wi-Fi problem follow up

We made a trip to the Apple Store after making an appointment with the "Genius Bar" to have them look at my wife's 3G that was having Wi-Fi problems. As it turns out, she said that she had been having Bluetooth connectivity problems for a while as well. Anyway, we went there Sunday afternoon at our appointed time, about a half hour before the place closed for the day. It was busy and noisy, very high energy. Anyway, after waiting 10 or 15 minutes, and being "checked in" by at least 3 folks, a fellow came to us. We explained the problem, and what we had already done (full restore). After warning us that if he had to replace the phone we would loose all data on it, and us telling him that wasn't a problem due to our back ups and me.com accounts, he took it in the back. After about 5 minutes he came back out with a brand new phone (at least I assume it was brand new as opposed to refurb, I didn't specifically ask him now that I think of it). Anyway, it was already activated with my wife's number and operational. During dinner on our way home, I got it set up on her me.com account, so she had her contacts and email. Then when we got home I synced it up on iTunes. Everything went very well. Only thing that was lost was her custom voice mail greeting (no biggy). Best thing was that since it was still under warranty, we got out with a grand total of $.00 being spent!

One thing I noticed was that after syncing her phone with iTunes, I put my phone on the same machine, as we always have. Now, instead of saying "Ken's iPhone", when iTunes recognizes the phone, it just says "iPhone".

Everything else seemed OK. It called my wife's phone by name, as it always had mine. Unsure what the deal is with that, but I don't think it's necessarily a problem.

iPhone WiFi

Next time your wife's phone is connected to iTunes, simply click on the name of the iPhone under devices (you said it is currently named "iPhone") and after clicking on the name, you can rename it "wife's iPhone" or anything you want. Same way you would rename a playlist or such.

I have searched and searched on my phone but dmned if I can figure out how to turn on/off the battery percentage next to the battery icon at the top.

My iPhone shows it but my husbands does not and I cannot figure out how to turn it on for his phone. BTW, we both have 3GS phones.

Settings > General > Usage > Battery Percentage.

Not all iPhones are created equal. There's a free app called Battery Magic
which will work.

But all "3Gs" iPhones should be.

Trying to mms gps location

Trying to mms gps location
When I go to the gps app and drop pin. I then try to share location by mms but it says contact in the mms text box and not the location. What am I doing wrong ?

iPhone GPS
GPS location from iphone
That is correct - it sends your "location" as an Address Book entry (Url to the Google Maps and Address field as your location translated as a physical address)

I have both Yahoo and Gmail accounts set up on my phone. If I use Yahoo to send the link, I get plain text. Using Gmail, I get a URL that links to Goggle maps.

If..you're mms to a verizon phone he gets nothing and he has gmail.. then Send it to his g-mail address from the iPhone Message app instead of his cell # - that will work

-----
Some phones really don't show MMS from iPhones. Tried that on several other phone models. Maybe something o do with the big file size (say, photo, which you cannot resize prior to sending) Whether that's the other phone manufacturer or Apple's fault, I don't know.

But Apple's been trying to be deviant ever since. Like their bluetooth which can only connect to fellow iPhones. Make you wish it's not an iPhone in your hand.

But you just love iPhone and couldn't let go despite its numerous flaws.

IPhone doesn't show up on iphoto

How to solve IPhone doesn't show up on iphoto?

Some times If you plugged iPhone into the mac iphoto would open and it would import all photos not previosly imported. But now no matter what you do the iPhone just will not show up on iphoto although it shows up on iTunes and syncs smoothly as before...

How to solve IPhone doesn't show up on iphoto?
1st.. check the settings in iPhoto > Preferences > General. If it already says Connecting camera opens: iPhoto, try changing it to something else then back again. If you did this to no avail... then

Maybe had a corrupt foto on your 3G that was preventing it from showing in iPhoto. You used a non Apple utility to delete the file. Afterwards, the 3G appeared as expected... but How to identify the corrupt photo?

Saved some photos received via email or MMS. Iphone would not show in iphoto. Once deleted all photos received by email or MMS on the phone, iphoto worked properly.

If we always had lots of photos received by email and never had a problem until now suddenly. Is there a programme which can identify the corrupted photographs?

Finally got around to doing what suggested. Here's what happened:

Created another user account. Fortunately iPhone appeared in iphoto there. Imported all the photos into iphoto and then to a folder on the desktop.

Then deleted originals on the iPhone. One photo refused to be imported and remained on the iPhone and deleted it manually - suspect that was the elusive delinquent. Then put the folder into shared user and then opened own user account and transferred it to my desktop. Now we shall have to laboriously transfer all the photos into iphoto.

iPhone and Windows 7

iPhone and Windows 7 don't play nice, Intel P55 chipset to blame

The iPhone is one of the most wildly popular phones the world has ever seen, while Windows 7 is well on its way to becoming the globe's most ubiquitous OS. So compatibility between the two would be kinda sorta important, right? Tell that to Intel's quality control team who seem to have somehow missed an issue between Apple's app carrier deluxe and the P55 Express chipset's USB controller. Consistent (and persistent) syncing issues have been reported on Apple's support forums, wherein iTunes on Windows 7 machines recognizes the iPhone, but spits out an "error 0xE8000065" message whenever the user attempts to sync. While some have found limited success with using PCI-based USB cards (and bypassing the chipset), this is clearly a major issue and something Apple would expect to be fixed before shipping its Core i5 / i7 iMacs, which are likely to sport the chipset.

I just upgraded to Win7, and the physical sync with my iPhone went just fine. My computer isn't Intel, it's AMD/ATI.

I do have a bit of a problem though... I'm now getting errors that Outlook is not set to be my default mail client and thus my contacts and calendar data is apparently not syncing.

Well duh, it's not set to be my default mail client - BECAUSE I DON'T USE IT FOR EMAIL!

-----
I am running windows 7 on one of my laptops and when I plug my iPhone in to charge it, it "attempts" to sync just fine (Its not the primary machine I sync on)

It is only machines with Intel P55 chips running Windows 7.

My computer is an HP Pavilion Media Center m7690n.

My OS is Windows 7 Home Premium. It is a P55 chipset. My spouse's computer is a home-built system, also running W7 on a P55 chipset. Both of us have the max 2GB of RAM that can be utilized with the 32-bit version of Windows 7. The 32bit limit on RAM is 4GB, not 2. Well, technically it's 3.5ish GB.

We're having no problems at all - in fact, sync seems to have increased speed since we installed W7.

Perhaps the sync problem being experienced is a function of his computer's RAM?

-----
2 GB ram is not the upper limit of 32 bit W7, 3.5GB is ... of course to get 3.5GB usually means you have 4GB of chips but 3.5 is all any 32bit OS will activate.

I doubt RAM is the problem for the OP, because I received W7 Professional through my Microsoft EA quite some time ago and it is running on my desktop (4GB Ram) and laptop (1GB Ram) and can sync my iPhone and iPod fine. Based upon his description of what is occurring I would suspect an invalid state descriptor.

-----
Intel has said they are looking into the issue and think it might be a BIOS thing. Which would be an easy enough fix.

Windows Outlook to Windows Mail

Moving from Contacrs from Windows Outlook to Windows Mail

We are migrating our iphone from using Windows Outlook to a new computer using Windows Mail as the desktop repository for the Iphone Contact list.

1. I understand that if you just want a portion of your Windows Contacts to be on the iphone, you create a Group and point to that in Itunes sync,

2. I tried converting the Windows Outlook contact list to Windows Contacts but I did not get all the information to port over and I don't have the original Outlook file to do it again.

3. If I have an empty Contact Group in Windows Contacts, what happens the first time I sync?

-- Do my several hundered contacts on the iphone get wiped out by the empty Windoes contact group on my computer; or

-- Does my iphone contact info fill in the heretofore empty iphone contact group?

If you change the sync setting in iTunes you will be prompted with your option(s) - I believe the only one will be to replace the data on the iPhone or not. If you have a third party service such as MobileMe, Google, Yahoo, etc I think you would have the option to Merge, replace on the device, or replace on the server but if the data is either only on the iPhone or only on the computer it can only be replaced or not...

Google Local

iPhone - Google Local
For those of you using your phone in an unfamilar part of town, while traveling or just in generally might like the new Google Local - the only way to explain it is like having a built in GPS system in your car and searching for the closest whatever (American Restaurant or Walgreens Pharmacy) - you simply tell it what you want and then narrow down the results such as Restaurant then type and it displays ever one within a certain mile range.

iphone google
google girl iphone
The examples also give ways to plan upcoming trips by researching POIs, staring them, then using the "Starred Places" to pull them up and search through results when you are at your travel destination.

"To access these features on your mobile device, go to www.google.com/m/local, or just click on the Local tab on www.google.com.

The product is available in the US and China, with more regions coming soon."

-----
You came through to the list - and yes Google does (and has for quite a while) done local searches with zip code or city, state - the difference between that and Google Local is that not only do you need not enter or know the city/zip code, the results are in real time to your location whereas a zip code can cover a 5 sq mile area, the "local" searches can return results within half a mile of your current location via GPS...

If I simply bring up Google Maps on the iPhone, any enter "McDonalds", it shows me the 10 McD's nearest my location with the nearest one highlighted.

No "near", no Google Local....

-----
Out of all the apps that search for points of interest, I find the white pages app to be my favorite. It works great, bringing up the phone number, directions, map and it is a free app. I use it all the time!

Bizarre Headphone Problem

iPhone Headphone - Bizarre Headphone Problem
I have a 16G 3G. After a month or two of use, the volume on one of the earbuds (the side with the microphone) faded and died. So I went back to AT&T, and they replaced it. Happened again --- same side, same way. Got it replaced. This happened two more times, including one aftermarket set. I finally convinced Apple to give me a new phone. Well, you guessed it: it happened again.

I'll get this last set replaced again (phone is still under warranty), but does anyone have any ideas? This has happened both before and after the OS upgrade. Mostly, I have been using that Plantronics stereo bluetooth set that was on sale at Amazon a while ago, so it's not that huge a deal, but it bugs the crap out of me. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. BTW, the Apple "geniuses" are stumped.

It's happening with both the OEM buds and it happened with one aftermarket set. And the funny thing is that I am easy on my gear. The really weird part is that it is always the same side.

BTW, I have ruled out subjective and error factors, like maybe the problem is with my ear, maybe it's my imagination, maybe it's just the song, etc.

It's bizarre and baffling...

.. What are you doing to the poor ear buds? I have the first pair of Apple ear buds from my first iPod Shuffle when they were first released that still work fine. If you have ruled out the iPhone (having an electrical) issue by having it replaced, I don't know what else to suggest.
