iPhone pay as you go

Can you use pay as you go everything for the iPhone?

Apple iPhone ATTApple iPhone

You can in the UK. I don't know about elsewhere but I don't see why not.

-----

AT&T originally had a policy of not allowing the iPhone on a pay as you go plan, although someone on this list has said that they were able to use it recently on AT&T, but would not say how.

-----

My daughter uses her iPhone prepaid here in the U.S.

-----

How is she using the iPhone a prepaid. AT&T said they would not allow it.

-----

I have no idea. She took my old 3G into a store and they told her she could do it. No she does not have a plan, she's not able to get an open account.

-----

And that is really funny, because they have repeatedly said they would not do it, and it is not something the store manager can override because it is coded into the account on the SIM card.

-----

I had pay as you go w/O2 in Germany. It was more expensive. I think the data was 15 euro a month for some limit that I had no trouble staying within, but the phone calls or texts were 15 cents each.

-----

It all depends on usage, of course. I wonder how many people pay for things they never use, or only use a fraction of?

iPhone, Amazon books

Does anyone know if it's possible to download ebooks from amazon and read them on an iPad?

Apple iPhone ipadApple iPhone ipad

You can of you use the kindle app.

-----

There is a Kindle App for iPhone & iPad

-----

Just download the free Kindle app and sync the ebook via iTunes and you have the book on your iPad.

-----

Download the Kindle app for iPad. It's free and works great on my iPhone. I don't have an iPad, but it's probably even better on that. I'm not sure about any other ereaders, but most use either epub or mobi formats so they should work too.

iPhone, AppleCare

I just received an email trying to sell me applecare for my 1 year old Iphone 4. $69. Is it worth it? I will probably buy an iphone 5 when it comes out in sept. What do you all think?

Apple iPhone warrantyApple iPhone

Personally, I would buy a SquareTrade warranty instead - http://www.squaretrade.com/pages/iphone-landing24?ccode=bs_war_vc_023:tii&cpn=WI\
ZZARD25&tii=1

-----

Don't buy it.

-----

I feel that Applecare is worth it. I have it for my iPhone 4. The only thing with SquareTrade is that you might be without a phone for a few days. With Applecare, you can bring it to the nearest Apple store and most of the time get a replacement on the spot.

-----

Last time I purchased AppleCare it was because Apple provided next day advance exchange of the phone at no charge, extended tech support, and a free battery replacement.

-----

But you will likely get a replacement on the spot at the Apple store even if you don't have AppleCare. That's my experience. And why I won't buy it.

-----

For people living overseas where there is no official apple store, how does apple care works. I am in Saudi Arabia, there is an apple representative who have earlier replaced super drive on my MBP as it was under warranty. Does any body have any experience or info re how Apple Care works in such situations or is it just USA thing

-----

As I explained in another thread, I live 100 miles away from the nearest Apples store.

And what about tech support after 90 days and battery after a year?

-----

The warranty on the iPhone 4 covers defects in materials and workmanship for 1 year. Applecare extends that to 2 years.

-----

And if you go to the Apple Store after one year they will likely still replace without a AppleCare warranty. It's worked for me several times already.

iPhone, Email, Signature

I have an iPhone 4 running 4.3.2. Is there a way to have a signature added to each text message without retyping each time?

Apple iPhone emailApple iPhone email

Under settings > mail > signature (down towards the bottom of the screen)

-----

That's for email. The question is can the same thing be done for texts? I don't think so.

-----

That's for emails not text messages.

-----

This may be a dumb question but since my last phone prior to my iPhones was a Razr, I thought I'd ask. Don't other phones show the name of the person texting like the iPhone does? My sister-in-law always signs her name after a text but my iPhone tells me it's her. I suppose if it's someone that you don't regularly text you might need a signature but your family and friends should know it's you texting them. Right?

-----

I have been frustrated by this lack a capability, too.

-----

The iPhone only displays the name of the person texting you if they are in youraddress book.

iPhone, AT&T is Offering 1000 Rollover Minutes to iPhone Users

I did receive a message about the rollover minutes, but my husband and I never use up our minutes and we're constantly losing the rollovers for lack of use.

Wish they'd over something else I could use, maybe a certain number of free texts. I don't have texting since I have emailing, but it would come in handy sometime.

Apple iPhone ATTApple iPhone ATT

You & me both. I don't come anywhere near to using up my monthly minutes, let alone dipping into the rollovers. And most of my calls last week, for example, were to another ATT mobile so were free anyway.

OTOH I hardly ever text, but did get a couple (& responded) from that same mobile last week so they'll be added to my bill.

What puzzles me is that there were 2 texts received (& one I sent) but one of the received-ones apparently counted as 2 messages. Is there a character limit or something??

I often read email on my phone but hardly ever send any from there. Some of what I send is from me to me to get some notes on my main computer. :-) (but I'm using OneNote more for a lot of that now)

Anyhoo, I haven't gotten any messages about free minutes & haven't gone to that link listed earlier either -- I don't need the minutes & the whole thing looked a bit odd -- certainly marketing-y if not hinky.

-----

SMS messages a limited to 160 characters. When there are more than that, the text is sent as multiple message. You can't turn on the character counter by going into Settings-> Messages-> slide on Character count

-----

Oops, that should have been you CAN turn on the character count by going to Settings->Messages-> slide on Character Count.

That will let you know how many characters your message is. It will show to the right of the text input field.

-----

But that does not count or limit the character count of incoming messages, which is what he was questioning.

-----

True, but it let's her know if she'll be sending 1or 2 texts. Which is a help as she's paying by the text and didn't know there was a character limit per text :-)

-----

since it is going to a 3rd party address and not AT&T like the first one, it is hard to say if it is a phishing scam or not. With texting to a numeric address, there is no telling at all who it is going to.

Even if it is authentic and honest, it is only a "warm and fuzzy", for 99% of all customers will never use them. There are a few cases where they might use some of the free minutes.

And that is was makes this such a great possible phishing scam or social engineering.

I changed a phone number on a post-paid account and in the process AT&T took away 3500 rollover minutes at a time when I could have gone over my plan minutes. They gifted me back 1000 rollover minutes when I complained. So some CS Reps have the discretionary ability to do this, anyway, without a promotion going on.

This is much like the Vz "warm and fuzzy" customer service I experienced in the past. They are always polite and promise you the world, but they never, ever follow through

-----

Hurray!!!

Someone finally realized the true value to the customers of an extra 1000 rollover minutes... zip, zero, nothing!

It gives the customer a good feeling, but probably nothing of value. There are so few cases where there will be any value to the customer.

Since the question came up recently of whether or not is was a phishing scam since it does not go to AT&T, but a 3rd party, if it is a scam, then that just shows you how much of a good feeling it is.

-----

Since I've knocked my monthly minutes way way down because I dont use my cell much during the day....except for holidays, this does come in handy for me.

I did get 1000 extra minutes in Feb with the freebie...and I definitely dipped into it.

-----

Anyone else positively know they have used some of the free rollover minutes, so I can change my position from 99% of the customers won't use them?

I think the seniors plan at 200 minutes is the only plan with fewer minutes than the 450 minute plan, and the senior plan does not allow rollover minutes.

For me, on the 450 plan, I have topped out at about 3500 rollover minutes, so I guess I use fewer minutes than Techlady. That might be true, seeing that I am a grumpy old fart and a confirmed bachelor.

iPhone, Mophie Charge

Few weeks ago I got a Mophie Juice Pack Plus for iPhone 4. The curious thing is it takes forever to charge.

I leave it charging (on USB or on the wall, does not matter) all night and in the morning the third LED still blinking.

so I have to leave charging for another 3~4 hours to get all the 4 LEDs to light...and that is not due to the extra current it provides...

I have a cheap battery case that does almost the same job (mophie gives me around 110% charge while the cheap one gives me around 95%) and gets full charge in 3 hours or so. I can leave both phone and case empty at night and in the morning both are fully charge...I was expecting that with the mophie but it is not happening.

If you have a mophie, have you noticed anything like that?

Apple iPhone mophieApple iPhone

I had the same issue with one my Juice Packs and all I had to do is contact Mophie and they sent a postage paid box to send it to them in. Within a week I had another one. Their customer service is great!

-----

Two things, I would fully charge and discharge it maybe 7-10 times to see if that helps, if it still does this then I would say it is defective, to be sure try and charge through the USB port on a computer in addition to a wall-charger or vice versa - if you are using the iPhone power brick it is rated only for the iPhone not the iPhone (1500 mAh) and a 2000mAh battery case.

I have bought the JP Air with each phone change and my the JP Air 4 had to be replaced after 8 months it was not charging, Mophie has EXCELLENT customer service and support and replaced it without question - the NEW one had an issue similar to what you mentioned (would quickly discharge and took longer to recharge than the one it replaced) but after a couple weeks it was working like the first one.

iPhone, WiFi home

Can't get on home WiFi.. I pushed too many buttons, two many Times yesterday and now I can not Sign onto my home Wi Fi, because It Asked for a password, that I do Not have! Any suggestions, I am using A D-Link system.

Apple iPhone Wi FiApple iPhone Wi Fi

Do you have verizon? Comcast?

You may have to reset your router... (or find your password). Sometimes the passwords are generic (like AAAA0000) if you never set up yourself and the system does it automatically.

Good luck... it can be a frustrating process.

-----

Connect to your D-link from your computer using the admin password and look for the connection password.

-----

If you bought the router yourself from a regular store like Best Buy the default password will be in the manual. If you don't have the manual you can get a copy of it on the router manufacturers website.

iTunes Search, iPhone, iPad App Organization..

Use iTunes Search for Easier iPhone and iPad App Organization [IPhone]

iPhone/iPod touch/iPad: Rearranging apps is much easier in iTunes on your computer than it is on your iOS device itself. Macworld offers a little-known trick for even simpler app organization: use the iTunes search box to quickly find the apps to drag around.

Apple iPhone itunesApple iPhone itunes

Am I missing something with this? The only thing I've ever gotten from searching for an app this way is the app showing up in the left-side list. Then I can check or uncheck it. As far as searching to find what screen it's on, the search doesn't show that.

-----

There are screens on the right side once you sync the Apps and you can move, arrange in groups or on screens, etc.

iPhone, iOS 5 date

Does anyone have a iOS 5 date or is it available to us yet(non-developers).

Apple iPhone iOSApple iPhone iOS

All they have said is "Fall" - my guess would be the third week in September probably 16th or 19th.

-----

Nope - Lion (OS X 10.7 is July) - iOS 5 will have 3-4 more betas at 2-3 weeks apart so at least 3 months...

-----

In July is all I recall. I am running iOS 5 beta 2 as a developer and it's by no means ready for prime time.

-----

Nope that is Lion that is coming out in July - iOS they only said "Fall" it will ship a couple days before (and on) the 5th Gen iPhone 5 (and likely 5th Gen iPod Touch) which should be around the third Friday in September which in past years was the annual Music Event / iPod Announcement and they pushed this year back so that 5th Gen iPhone will be out for the holiday quarter.

-----

iPhone update is in the fall, Mac OS update is this month sometime

-----

Is it still a strong indication that the new iPhone 5 will be out around the same time?

-----

Thanks

iPhone, Mophie juice pack plus

I got my new Mophie juice pack plus for my iPhone 4. A friend in America bought it for me and had it sent over. But after I put it on my phone, it's not charging the way it should! It starts charging then goes off on it's on, then after few minutes comes back on it's own. I don't understand what's happening! I have another like this from a different company but that works fine! Can anyone help on this?

Apple iPhone MophieApple iPhone Mophie

I just got a Mophie pack plus also, and when it is empty and I plug on my USB HUB, the computer shuts off the port, saying there is too much current drain...

Only one of my usb ports allow me to charge it from zero without shutting down.

I believe it is due to the larger battery capacity built in...and also takes forever to charge...

I have also another case/battery from another company and works without issues.

Try different ports/computers to charge it and see what happens...

-----

I just ordered the "plus". I'm planning on using the the USB wall charger to charge it. I think that should provide enough power to charge it without problems.

Has anyone else done this? And if so, how does it behave?

-----

Thanks for your response! The problem is not when charging via the USB. It's when I use the phone. Shuts off and comes on, on it's own! One minute it's charging next moment it's not. It's driving me crazy!

-----

My old one used to do that when mophie was almost dead.

-----

That worries me since I just ordered one. Have you tried their tech support yet?

http://www.mophie.com/articles.asp?id=153

-----

No I have not! Thanks I will try the tech support and see what they have to tell.

-----

I just put the USB to micro USB into my iPhone's wall plug. I take the iPhone's white cord out of the USB port and plug the Mophie cord into that.

iPhone, nano's music

I don't want to lose my nano's music....

Does anyone know if there is a way to get all of my Nano's music onto my computer so that I can sync it to my iPhone 3G? I love this music and would hate to lose it!

Apple iPhone musicApple iPhone music

How did you get the music on the Nano? load it the same way on the iPhone.

-----

It was music from a computer I no longer have...

-----

If all else fails, pay for a years subscription to Copy Trans, use Copytrans to copy from Nano to Itunes and then from Itunes to Iphone.

-----

Try sharepod it's a download for free. With it you can download your iPod songs on your pc.

-----

This is a common thing with iOS devices (iPods and iPhones). For some reason, it is not obvious to everyone that the iTunes library is the "central point" that holds the *master versions* of your files. The files copied/synced to an iOS device are, in a sense, just temporary copies that could disappear at any time. All it takes is for you to lose or damage the iPod/iPhone and those files are gone *unless* you still have them in iTunes. That's not enough either: the hard-drive in your computer could fail at any time, taking all your files with it. It really is essential to take regular backups.

If you have a backup of your files on the old computer, you can restore them to the new computer. If you don't there's still a get-out. You can copy the files back from the iPod/iPhone.

iPhone, Photo App Recommendation

I was hoping for a recommendation for a photo app for my iPhone 3GS. I take pictures mostly of my kids/family and both kids swim on a team so I would like an app with a zoom feature.

Apple iPhone appsApple iPhone apps

Try ProShots. It is free and has a zoom.

-----

Camera+, the best, with zoom, I am not sure if it works on a 3GS?

-----

I'll second Camera+. It replaced the default camera app on my first screen.

-----

Your camera app itself should zoom, otherwise ProCamera has worked well for me since it adds some useful features like a grid so I can orient the image as want for the shot. The Photoshop app is also good for basic edits and enhancements; crop, rotate, sepia, etc, etc. Have fun!

iPhone, iPad on Same Computer

Greetings all, Can an iPhone and iPad share the same computer, yet have seperate
applications and music? Can they also share apps?

Apple iPhone ipad computerApple iPhone ipad computer

Yes they can.

While the default is everything on all devices, by selecting an attached device and then it's tabs, you can set exactly what apps, music, fotos, movies, etc. are sync'ed to it.

Requires little effort.

It just works.

-----

I have a friend with the exact same "problem." Her nine-year-old son has an iPod Touch, and she has an iPad. She is not too technological, but wants to make sure her music playlists stay on the iPad, and not the iTouch and he keeps his Scooby Doo videos on the Touch, and not her iPad. :)

So, if there are some key points, things to do on this etc., that would be very helpful.

-----

Yes, you can have several iP* devices on the same computer, sharing the same iTunes account &/or library.

They can share any apps, music, books, videos, etc. that you want (as long as the particular iP* can handle the item) or they can have all different, or a mix, or whatever. In order to share items they have to use the same iTunes library. To share iStore items they have to be on the same account. (this is probably clear as mud....)

When you go to set up a new device, give it a name that you'll know which it is (I have two iTouches of different generations, two old iPods of different types, an iPad & an iPhone -- so far!). Then go through all the tabs & choose what to put on it. I vary what goes on each device by what I use it for (& of course what it will take.)

And none of the choices is set in concrete -- you can change any of them on the next sync if you want, & keep tweaking until you get things just the way you want.
