I will never switch back to Verizon as I was unable to get a signal in my home.

Also the network speed is not as fast as AT&T.

Technically no - most people don't notice though as the times they are using phone and talking at the same time they are on WiFi. I have a VZW Droid in addition to my AT&T iPhone and nearly all of my voice calls are done on it and I think twice I have tried to pull up a web page and realized it wouldn't load. However, the rumor is that Verizon is going to use data for calls on the iPhone so that it won't be an issue. We will know all tomorrow at 11am and the Apple earnings call is the following Tue 11/18 ;-).

My iPhone 3GS will be ready to update in July or August. The majority of people I know are on Verizon. Those that aren't... have the iPhone.

For southern Indiana, I expect many people will switch. At least at this earl stage in the game.

Maybe it will be self-correcting? If enough people leave AT&T then it should help the network congestion problems. I don't have many issues with AT&T in the St. Louis area but understand it is highly regional.

I am going to wait until my contract is up in Sept. By then I can determine if all the switchers to Verizon permits AT&T network to improve. If it does not, I will move if unlimited data is still available for new iphone subscriptions at Verizon. I am not totally discouraged with AT&T at this point so I am looking forward to some improvement when the subcribers even out the strain on both networks. Also I want to see what the iphone 5 is going to be. No need to rush into an iphone 4.

Since I jumped *from* VZ (after 15 years) to get the iPhone, my renewal won't come up for quite a while. By then I'll have heard plenty about how VZ's version, service, speed, etc. is going.

I don't spend much time (hardly any) in the DC Metro tunnels so I don't *need* to have VZ while I'm commuting or something. (currently, though "they're working on this") VZ (& maybe Sprint in some way? not sure) is the only cell provider that works all over the Metro system.

I haven't had any trouble with access or whatnot with my iPhone4, though I don't put heavy demands on it so I'm not a good "test case". I certainly haven't tried to talk & surf at the same time; I considered it "advanced" the other night when I was talking & needed to look up a contact# for the person I was talking to -- I warned him I might hang up accidentally, but all went well after all.

Our family has been with AT&T, Cingular, Houston Cellular since 1998! They have always had great service here in Houston and surrounding areas. Very few dropped calls on iPhone. We know the weak areas, so we either stay away, or get-off the phone before we get there, or drop the call when we're there.

I have att as my landline provider but they have left me with no service for the last three weeks. I have been forced to use my tethered iphone4. I wish I could change to any other provider for any phone service. I'm trapped.

I just dropped Verizon because all I ever hear is they get the best signal of all but at work people with AT&T walk around using their phones all over the place while I have to stick my head out of a door or window to get one.The only gripe i have is that last week I bought my Iphone 3gs for $105.00 and now i see that they are $49.00.

At some places it's the opposite. I see people with Verizon making calls in metro stations and me with AT&T cannot.

Eons ago, VZ wired the Metro on some kind of deal. There are current efforts underway to upgrade/expand to other carriers & in some stations it's already done. But VZ is the only one that works in the tunnels. This has been reported in the press so it's no secret if it ever was.

(I remember the early days of Metrorail -- even the police radios didn't work underground until they installed some kind of ?whatever? equipment.)

My thoughts exactly. I think changing carriers would be the same as changing lanes at the super market. It's almost always a losing proposition. Should make an improvement on ATT when the bandwidth frees up.

Tethering

I am getting the run around with AT&T. I want to tether my MacBook with my iPhone3G while I travel for two weeks in Colorado. I currently have the unlimited data package with AT&T. I called and they said that I would have to drop that datapackage and add the Tethering option instead! That doesnt' make sense.

Does anyone here have some experiences on this that they could share.

I think that information is correct. They won't offer you tethering if you have the unlimited plan. So I recommend you not lose the unlimited plan and instead find a way to use your mac using free wifi places like hotels, Panera Bread, McD's etc.

If/when tethering is important to you, I recommend going to AT&T's website, logging in to your account, and checking what your data usage has been for the past [however many] months.

If you find that, for example, you have never used more than 1 GB of data, then go ahead and tether.

If you find that you regularly use 2 GB or more, find another way.

If you don't keep your "grandfathered" plan, you have to go with what they are *currently* offering. It's not a new or unusual practice. Correct, AT&T no longer offers the Unlimited Data Plan and to get tethering you have to give it up, pay the $25 for 2GB and an additional $20 for the ability to tether so you end up paying $45/mo for 2GB (total) instead of $30/mo for unlimited. That is the key reason I won't give up my AT&T iPhone as I would not be able to get my unlimited data plan back - luckily my Verizon Droid Incredible also has unlimited data and has a 3G Hot Spot built in....

My grandson has a MacBok Pro, and has an iPhone through AT&T. He needed tethering and couldn't justify AT&T's high prices/limited resources and went to Sprint and got a tether dongle with unlimited data for $40.00/month.

Best of both worlds... now he has 3g on his MBP via Sprint's network for just over a buck-thirty a day!

As far as I know they didn't offer it before but some may have had it on like 3.1 but it was blocked with firmware updates.

Hi everyone, I'm new new to the iPhone and smart phones in general, I went to AT&T and ordered an iPhone 3. The first thing I want to learn is about the iPhone GPS. I have a Garmin GPS and the last time I went to Chicago I used my Garmin and it worked fine until I got deep downtown and lost the satellite signal in the maze of buildings and caught hell til I finally got one.I was told by a friend that his iPhone didn't have this problem there because it also works off cell phone towers. I can see how this is possible,the problem is there are several different apps for this, from free on up and I don't know which one is best for this kind of situation, I don't want to pay top dollar when a lesser app will do.

You can save a lot of data by choosing "Map" instead of "Satellite" for the display. "Satellite" is pretty, and useful in many situations, but takes a _lot_ of downloaded pixels.

Also, whether using the cell system to download maps continuously or just using the GPS receiver continuously runs your battery down FAST. You will need some sort of a connection to the cars auxiliary power for anything more than a pretty short trip.

I have had GPS units for about 13 years. 2 different Garmins, and 2 different built-ins.

I haven't had the problem you describe, even on Lower Wacker Drive.

For just over 1 year, I have had the TomTom (USA & Canada) App, and this is now my only GPS unit. My Garmin Nuvi lives in my wife's car.

This App is one of the expensive ones, but the reason is that you are purchasing complete maps of all of North America (excluding Central America), along with point of interest. That makes it about 1.5 GB.

I also have some good but inexpensive Apps, like MotionX GPS, which download maps over the Wifi or cellular network as needed.

As for location by cell tower, well, it's nowhere near as accurate as a GPS fix.

I used to hate flying into Minneapolis, because the car rental garage is on like the second floor of a 5 story parking structure. I would be all the way out the the highway intersection that I need to make a choice at before the GPS would get a satellite fix. That is why you can't rely strictly on GPS. And I couldn't get a fix, circling the airport, because the sky is obstructed.

If I hadn't changed 2 time zones on the flight in, it usually acquires the satellites faster.

Inrix has a great maps / traffic application. Beat the Traffic is another one, I think written by KHOU Houston but it works in other cities, I've tested it in Los Angeles and Dallas, doesn't skip a beat and even links traffic cameras. Mapquest is also a free program, as is Google Earth. I've got a folder with all of them sometimes one traffic application will pick up a wreck the others don't have yet. Amazing for free apps!

Here is my experience with Apple's Maps, and is similar with other apps that do not install the maps on the phone.

I was driving up the Pacific Coast and found several areas where I was in a cut through a hill with stone on either side, or in the bottom of a valley. I had no cell signal, but I did have a clear view of the sky, or at least enough to continue GPS reception.

What I saw on the screen was a dot for my location and a pin for the next POI on top of a grey grid for a map. The app lost cell reception and so it could not get the portion of the map I needed. Being that I was on a windy road in the hills, I could not see the next turn on the map that I needed to take.

I was also running my Garmin nuvi 360 along side the iPhone and the map and my location were both shown.

The canyons of any big city may play havoc with cell or GPS reception.

I used to travel for work to "wide spots in the road" and farmer's fields where there was no cell reception, so for me, I prefer an app that loads the maps to the phones, because in those situations, I usually have good GPS reception. Either way it is nice to have a paper map at hand at least for an overview. You can usually pick up a one-page overview map at a convenience store and if you are staying with friends leave it with them or give it to a stranger at the airport.

i use map quest which is free. around town and it has voice directions. i use att navigator which is $10. mo and great for me, i travel. however if you miss a turn you have to go slow so the gps can catch up especially in the city.

I have used Tom Tom for many years, first on a Palm Treo and now on iPhone. I like and trust it. I also use MotionXGPS, which is a great gps app. It will allow you to cache maps when you have WIFI and use them when you don't have cell or WIFI coverage.

I like both apps as well but I find myself using TomTom lately even more because of it's Traffic feature. It is very accurate and warns me ahead of time about a slowdown and proposes an alternate route.

No other mapping/NAV app does this quite as nice as TomTom does.

Unlock AT&T SIM card

I have an iPhone 4 and will be traveling to New Zealand with it. The is a company there called 2 Degrees that offers a prepaid SIM card that will allow me to use their 3G network to make calls and get email, etc. Can I just put it into my iPhone replacing the AT&T SIM card or do I need to "unlock" it which I don't want to do!

Also, the iPhone4 uses a micro-sim card, not the same one the rest of the world uses. Make sure they offer this smaller format. Regular SIMs can be trimmed AND I suspect 2 Degrees might not want you to do that.

This app, which was very kindly suggested to me by this group, beats all others in the genre hollow. It is amazing. It gives you your whole month's calendar to you at a glance on your iPhone. Unbeatable. Worth every bit of the 12 + $ tag.

I entirely agree that Pocket Informant turns the iPhone/iPod Touch into a truly useful PDA. I gave up using my Palm TX only after discovering Pocket Informant (PI).

By syncing with Google Calendar, I can also sync all appointments to my networked office PC, which runs MS Outlook. My secretary thus knows exactly when I'm free and when I'm not, and she can set up new appointments in MS Outlook that then appear on PI.

Because both PI and Google Calendar will subdivide appointment calendars into "work" and "personal," my work calendar is not cluttered with my personal appointments. I also use the category tags for my appointments. PI helps to make the Blackberry phones obsolete.

To open a program, any program, you always have "click on it". Even (especially?) on a Palm. The difference there is that Palm has a hardware button that is defaulted to the calendar (which can be changed). On the iPhone, you can place any four apps you want into the App Dock, which serves the same function. My iPod Touch has Music, Calendar, ListPro and Settings there.

Thanks, The tray/app dock at the bottom [to me anyway] is similar to how the calendar is. It's the first icon on my first page but I guess I like how the palm did it. oh well. I still like the informant though...and I do believe that I read on their website that it can now sync to the iCal program. :)

True but one can sync to google and from there sync to various other calendars. Tasks are an issue. I use the toodledo pocket informant link and then sync to google. It serves my purposes which are very basic ;-)

Does it keep track of which tasks aren't finished and moved them to the next day so you don't lose track of them?

Can you schedule items that repeat on odd patterns, e.g. every three days, or the 3rd Wednesday of each month? These are things I really miss from my Palm Treo that iCal just can't do on the iPhone.

Yes - there are custom repeats. The undone tasks are moved forward.

Also there are levels that can be given to each task - low to top priority. When a task is overdue a red notifier appears on the app icon. Also the tasks can be synced to Toodledo and from there can be shown on google calendar.

As a replacement for Datebk6 it is capable. Too bad CESD Didn't work on datebook for iPhone. He does have one for Android :-(

I did not realize that there was a DateBK for Android. Both the iPhone and Blackberry Phones are in a desperate need of a DateBk type app that CESD is so famous for. I just do not know why he never pursued one for the iPhone.

If I format my computer, or get a new iPhone, in other words, erase any records I have about that purchase, will I have the right to download the same software again, using, of course, the same login/pass I used to create my account and buy that software? Or I will have to pay again?

New computer can be more challenging because of these darn libraries …so you need to make sure you have the iTunes library backed up and ready to upload to a new computer.

Before you sell your Mac (or pc) or send it in for repairs it is a good idea to open iTunes and de-authorize the Mac (or pc). You can have a maximum of 5 computers authorized on one iTunes account at one time.

Is there a way to transfer the apps I have downloaded directly from the app store on my iPhone, to the laptop? I will be getting a new iphone and some of the apps were paid apps free for a day, so can I somehow transfer them to my laptop or even to the new iPhone?

Once you have a downloaded an ap it's been noted to your account in the app store. You may download this to as many devices as you desire with the same app store a/c. They will remain with you until deleted.

No, what you purchase from the Mac App Store is for your computer. What you purchase from the "old" App Store through iTunes is for your iPod, iPhone and/ or iPad, not your Mac.

I'd settle for an external antenna connection for those of us in tough reception areas between cell towers or far from cell towers. I really don't think it is uncool to have an antenna sticking out. What isn't cool is dropped calls. A bit better antenna would be very welcome, even if it sticks out on the side or something.

My tin foil log periodic I've stuck on with tape inductively couples to a degree, but is too directional to be practical.

You can look at quick-Cal which also has a widget for Mac. It has a list view and a month view. I use the list view, but it does not show only one week at a time. The best thing is it uses plain language to add events.

For that last few days my phone doesn't pick up a 3g signal just the slow edge network. Is anyone else having this issue? I live in Michigan.. I seen a message from AT&T in my account that said there was a carrier update to update the MMS features however I go there and no update available.

Mine did the same thing. I called ATT and they walked me through a few steps (which I can't remember) and performed some magic on their end. All was well.

Are you saying not cellular service or no 3G?

They don't have 3G everywhere. I used to work in a metal roofed building just outside Denver. Their cellular service was horrible in Denver and all of Colorado, but under that metal roof, your chances were slim to none and if a HCAV fan turned on, forget it completely.

The comment on cycling Airport mode forces it to search again.

Also, get the free App AT&T Mark the Spot and report these to AT&T. They can't fix it if they don't know they have a problem.

I used to travel for work to "wide spots in the middle of the road" or some farmers far field. I was happy to have any signal there, let alone 3G.

Next time, try turning airplane mode on, wait a moment, then turn it off. This may correct your reception just as well, and it's easier and faster.

Instead of turning off the phone and back on, you can just switch it to airplane mode then back out of it.

That is all that is actually needed.

iPhone Apps
Is this a pretty good running app? I have 1 question. How does it work if you have multiple devices. Meaning I have a iPhone 3gs, new touch, and an ipad. If I download this app for my phone. How would it work putting it on my touch? I usually just download straight to the phone and not through iTunes. Can I download to multiple devices with the same account. Or should I download through iTunes and then place on the phone and touch?

You can do whichever way you'd like. If you download via the idevice, then when you sync it, iTunes will download the app(s) to iTunes and then sync it appropriately with other devices.

Solar chargers

Apple iPhone - Solar chargers

I´ve been searching for a solar charger for my iphone on the web. I´m tired to plug it every nigth for charging and I was thinking to leave the iphone under a small lamp during sleep time and it would be charged in the morning with no wires.

Have anyone tested one of those silicon case solar charger for the iphone?

I liked this model most because it is like a normal silicon case to protect the phone plus a solar cell in the back

There are some others on the market that are just slide-in type and I don´t
like much the idea.

iPhone Battery
You have an iPhone, and you have a choice of recharge power sources - either mains power or solar power.

You have to plug the iPhone into the mains, or plug it into the solar unit.

You would prefer to spend the money to buy a solar unit to use in the same environment in which you already have mains power anyway, and plug into that in order to save you from having to plug into the mains.

Have I got that right?

Yes, that is it. I just want to get home and leave my iPhone "sun bathing" under a lamp and have it recharge overnight (the lamp stays on anyways).

I don´t know if it possible, or I really need sunlight to use one of those chargers.

When I try to do that, I get a message that all the pictures currently on the phone will be replaced with the ones I am trying to import. I do not want to do that. I want to add them to the existing pics, not replace them.

Alarms not working

Apple iPhone - Alarms not working

The alarms on my wife's 3G stopped working today. We have changed times, turned the phone off and then on, made certain the volume is up and the phone is not on silent, and deleted old alarms and created new ones. Nothing seems to be helping to make it work. Any ideas? She is running most current iOS.

I don't know if there is a fix. There was a huge article on yahoo about an apparent alarm glitch. I for one was a victim of the new year alarm fiasco. My alarm didn't go off to wake me up for new years :-(

I think this is more of the ATT issue than iphone. I am in SaudiArabia, have iphone 3GS. Did not gave any problem in recurring alarm on first there days of Jan.

Really? oh dear. Funny one because I'm using my iPhone on T-mobile and had the same issue, still no working alarm.

I don't think so, I'm in Jordan so no AT&T. My iPhone was ok,maybe because I had repeat alarms set (?), but my daughters iPod alarm and sons iPhone had the bug and did not work for those 3 days! In any case, all are working again :)

Correct: repeating alarms supposedly had no problem.

The problem is software, and is related to one time alarms not reacuring alarms. It has nothing to do with the carrier.

Alarms (one time) on my iPhone4 weren't working for a few days over the weekend but they are working again, starting yesterday.

Initially, I would have agreed. But the updated IOS 4 is great. I updated my 3GS, and I've been very happy - no slowdowns, and everything works great. And I'm delighted to have the added capabilities of 4.0. So I'd say, go ahead and do it. I don't think you'll be unhappy.

If you are speaking to Dick and Barbara, They don't have the 3GS, they have the 3G, which only had 128Mb of RAM. iOS 4 bogs down the 3G to a crawl.

I have a 3GS and it works fine with iOS4. The 3GS has 256Mb of RAM and the iPhone 4 has i believe double that.

I will modify what I said, the early versions of iOS 4 bogged the 3G down. That may not be the case with iOS 4.2, but not owning a 3G I can not say.

Thanks, for clarifying our situation. One other poster mentioned that as well, that the later iOS 4.2 seemed to be okay on a 3G, but not the first version. Any other experience with this? By the way, does anyone have any trouble with not receiving copies of their own posts to this list (just receiving the replies)?
