Apple iPhone - Obvious incompatibility with MS software

Despite the determined declarations that iTunes and the iPhone are compatible with MS software, I know that I am far from alone in experiencing problems, and I have today hit on a prime example. I have realized before that Outlook's < Recurrent Appointment > setup in MS Office did not work properly in iTunes and iPhone.

Scanning my next couple of weeks today in the iPhone Calendar, I noticed that a regular meeting (a committee that occurs on the first Friday quarterly) was marked as on Sunday afternoon, not Friday. Editing this in the iPhone, it showed that the recurrence was and on the first Friday of March annually - yet nothing I did could persuade the iPhone to modify this to Friday March 4th, not Sunday March 6th. Deleting everything, and modifying MS Outlook on the PC, I resynchronized - same dates, and I see that the iPhone does not itself have a setting for "same weekday" in a < Custom > item - it plainly copies from the PC a setting it cannot replicate. This is not opinion, it is fact - it happens.

This is entirely consistent with previous experience I have had since using an iPhone. It makes an awful mess of recurrent appointments transferred from MS Outlook - some of them have been mangled in the past, as has this one. It is not good enough for Apple to be complacent about this - either sort it, or warn users what it can and cannot do

Any comments? How do I present this obvious bug so that Apple will listen?

iPhone Calendar
If I read you correctly the iPhone calendar does not have the proper option to match the settings in Outlook. So the incompatibility is due to the lack of functionality in the iPhone app. I also found this to be true. The solution is to go to an app that is compatible with Outlook. I have been using Pocket Informant. It is now capable of syncing with Outlook.

I may be doing something different. I use the exchange server setting through work and have never had problems through miconnect with repeating appointments set on my phone or on my work calendar. Of course, I no longer sync with my home outlook program. I rarely use my home outlook now although I may set it up with Google eventually.

After having multiple, multiple problems with BlackBerry and Outlook even using Pocket Informant, I am thrilled not to find disappearing contacts or appointments. I am still having to rebuild part of my data base and I gave up the Bold at the beginning of December. The Bold 9000 had a huge memory leak and did a lot of damage to my things, but to BlackBerry's reputation period.

I am brand new to the iPhone and looking for a calendar app that I can sync with the Outlook 2007 program on my PC. So far all I have found is a program called "MobileMe" which requires a monthly fee. Can anyone recommend something else that works well and doesn't have a monthly fee attached to it? It would be great to also have a program that syncs with both the Outlook calendar and contacts.

I'm using Companion Link to sync Outlook to Google (for use with my Droid). Just be careful how you have it set up if you use it on more than one computer. If set to "merge" it will cause dupes every time.

Outlook 2007 will sync everything with the iPhone you just have to tell it to in settings.

Tab to the info tab and press space

Tab until you hear Mobile Me

Tab 3 more times and you will hear "Sync Contacts with" and you are at the start of what to start syncing with iTunes/Outlook 2007.

iTunes will do that for you when you are connected via usb. If you want to sync over the air then you can use google's sudo Exchange server.

iPhone Calendar application, repeat by variable day

I am looking for an calendar application that I can have a repeatable event in a preset number of days. Example "lunch every 8 days". Does anyone know of such an application? Also entering the event in plain language would be great. Example "Hair Cut Feb 19, 2011 at 10:00 AM".

I use Pocket Informant and the answer is yes. You can adjust the flexibility of repeating events to as many days, weeks, years you want or need.

I use Saisuke with Google calendar. Saisuke and Google Calendar both let you do the custom repeats. They are very flexible with scheduling. It's a bit pricey for an app at $9.99 but in my opinion VERY worth it if you depend on a custom calendar.

Thanks for the tip, I tried the free, and jumped to the paid version within minutes. Great app. I did get a little screwed up with double listings. But turned the iPhone calendar off in the App settings. So far this is fantastic. I also use an app called QuickCal which allows me to enter plain text such as Hair Cut tomorrow at 4:00 PM. And it will end up in the Saisuke app.

I sync Google with my phone. It's a one way thing. My phone doesn't go to Google but Google goes to my phone.

Make sure you don't have a sync connection with both your Mac (On My Mac) and MobileMe. If both are on, you will get duplicates on your calendar. One from the desktop when you initiate a wired sync and another wirelessly with MobileMe. This is not a bug, it's the result of asking the system to sync with two sources.

You can look at quick-Cal which also has a widget for Mac. It has a list view and a month view. I use the list view, but it does not show only one week at a time. The best thing is it uses plain language to add events.

The in-built calendar on the iPhone 4 begins on a Sunday after the upgrade some time ago. I'd like mine to begin on a Monday. Also I'd like to see my appointments in the week at a glance, even though I realize that the screen size is limited. Does anyone know of an ap that would perform this task. Thanks enormously.

I found that the default calendar program was too weak to meet my needs, but if you are willing to allow Google Calendar to help you out, it will sync with both your iPhone and MS Outlook. And Google Calendar on its own offers high quality schedule management and sharing.

If you are looking for a more functional iPhone calendar app, I suggest that you take a look at Pocket Informant. It also syncs with Google Calendar, and offers more display, scheduling, and task-planning options than does the iPhone's default calendar.

I spent over 30 minutes trying to sign up for Google calendar. I entered the scrambled word at least 20 times only to find that I had not entered it correctly. I never got it right so I gave up. Is it a "d" or a "c" with an "l" next to it. That's why I gave up.

I only need a calendar to remember astronomy events like the upcoming lunar eclipse.

Google definitely has a preset shared moon calendar. Not sure why it was so hard for you to create a Google account, I just created another one for storage and took less than a minute for GMail, GCal, GDocs, and GVoice...

If you just want Calendar (and/or mail and/or notes) then setttings > Mail/contacts/calendar > Add > Google > username/address/password and turn On which of the three options you want. If you want to sync Contacts and Calendar then you need to use Exchange instead of Google username is full email address, password, next then server is m.google.com

Thanks to everyone for the help, BUT... Isn't there a "local", (in my PC) calendar program that will sync with iPhone? (like address book syncs to contacts) I kind of like Google calendar but having to set up accounts with exchange an all is getting too complex and unnecessary. There has to be a simpler way.

Can't sync with Outlook calendar

When I sync my iPhone 4 with my computer, the Outlook contacts sync, but the calendar doesn't. Anyone have any suggestions for how to fix this? I also wish I could get the iPhone to sync with Outlook tasks and notes. My old iPhone 3 did sync with calendar and notes, but never with tasks.

iPhone It should be on the Info tab when you plug the iPhone in - no way to sync Tasks that I am aware of but Calendars and Notes sync.

I use iCal on the Mac and sync events and reminders from several defined calendars to my 3GS. I also sync my work Exchange Server calendar.

Usually I display only one of the iCal calendars and the Exchange calendar on the 3GS, tho I can display others by selecting the iCal calendars I want to see.

I notice that ANY reminder chimes and appears on the screen, regardless of whether that calendar is displayed. This is not what I would like.

I have a calendar called Home, for instance, that is contains actions (like turning certain programs on or off) and is meant only for my desktop machine. I never display those events on the 3GS. However, their reminders go off like clock work.

Is there a way to prevent events from nondisplayed calendars from triggering?

You can choose which calendars to sync in iTunes. Are you syncing Home even though you don't actually want it on the iPhone?

Thank. On the one hand, I know I can choose which calendars to sync in iTunes.

However, I don't have any calendars selected to sync in iTunes. The check box Sync iCal Calendars is not checked in the Info tab. Dimmed out, the radio button for my mac.com account is selected, I imagine because I've turned on Calendars in on my 3GS in the MobileMe account settings. (iTunes has the statement "Your calendars are being synced over the air..." in the INFO tab under Sync iCal Calendars section).

In Calendars, all my iCal subcalendars, like Home, appear as options for display, along with the Exchange calendar. I can select any or all of them for display.

However, I want to disable the Alarms on the Home calendar. I don't see any option in iCal, in MobileMe or on the 3GS to turn off Home's Alarms. My only option has to do with Display the events.

So you're using Mobile Me, not iTunes, to sync?

I don't know of a blanket 'disable alarms' function, so that's why I wondered if you wanted to not sync that calendar.

I've never used .Mac/Mobile Me so I can't try anything myself.

Well, that's an interesting question! As I indicated, the settings seem to follow the 'sync by MobileMe' approach and yes I have MobileMe.

iCal on all my computers sync to MM (editing contacts or events in either place flows them to the other). I have a couple of computers that are part of that collection and all goes as expected....

Except the 3GS. Items added to the cloud calendar DO NOT appear on the 3GS and vice versa, even tho iTunes says the calendars are being sync'ed over the air. The only way those updates are made is by sync'ing hardwired to iTunes (even tho, as I said, the ŒSync iCal Calendars' is NOT checked, tho the radio button for the MM account is selected, tho greyed out so it can't be edited in iTunes.)

And of course, my original question remains, how to disable one of my iCal calendars, called Home, from triggering events on the 3GS. I'd be glad to remove it from the display on 3GS option as I never need to see these daily events on the calendar.

On my iPhone 4, it has my Mobile Me calendar, my Yahoo calendar, my Gmail calendar, and those are all fine.

But then it has a calendar under the category "Other" called Birthdays, and for whatever reason it has listings for some of my contacts that are NOT their birthdays, and those entries do not get an Edit button on the iPhone.

I've gone to settings under calendar, and I don't even know where that one comes from. I've dropped and re-added every account that says it has a calendar, and that one persists. Where does it come from, and how can I get rid of - or at least fix - it? I have it unchecked, and the dates are off the calendar, but I find that unsatisfying - I want it really "fixed". Any ideas?

I'm not positive this will solve your issue but try this. If you go to iCal (I'm assuming you use the Mac) in the preference pane, under General you should see a checkbox for showing the birthday calendar. If this is checked, you can uncheck and it should go away from iCal as well as Mobile Me.

These dates come from the Address Book where you can put in the birthday of your contacts. There may also be another way to enable it directly on the phone so if you want to fix the dates you should be able to do it from the Address Book.

Hope that is the issue and you can fix it using my limited knowledge.

about unchecking the Birthdays from iCal. Yes I do use a Mac, but I actually already tried that - and the thing is that there are actually TWO birthday calendars showing up. One is that one, but it is not where the bad dates are. I DO want my birthdays from the Address Book, where all the dates are right, and those do not exist.

When it lists the calendars, there are the ones under Mobile Me - including Birthdays, the ones under each of my email addresses, and then this "Other" category (that actually says "Other"), which has the second Birthdays calendar.

I have no idea at all where it comes from - and they don't show up in Mobile Me at all - not even after syncing. I have checked my Mac, my iPad, my husband's iPhone, all my email account calendars, everywhere I can think of - and I don't see those "wrong" birthday dates listed anywhere.

I heard this issue addressed on a recent podcast, but I"m afraid I don't remember what the solution was (since I don't have the problem, the solution didn't stick in my mind).

But the podast is The Mac Observer's Mac Geek Gab #293 (Premium Free Sample). As I recall, the issue of calendars and how to delete unwanted ones was a topic.

I looked for it and I can see the Other Calendar on my iPhone as well. You can uncheck it so it is not visible. I also noticed that I could get entries to appear by entering a date on the address book birthday field on the iPhone. It appears to be a different Birthday's calendar than the one associated with iCal -- I guess this is wrong the entry on my Phone synced to my computer's Address Book.

So I believe you have two choices:
1.) Uncheck the birthdays calendar under Other in Iphone Calendar program.
2.) Correct the address book entries for the birthday's that are wrong.

It may be that if you put in any field with a date it shows up as a birthday.

Okay - so closer - but now the issue is different. It IS the iPhone calendar that is showing up - and I want it to. BUT - in big letters, BUT. It is my father's birthday that is showing up wrong. His birthday is August 18. It shows up on December 13th. When I remove his birthday, the December 13th entry goes away. When I put back August 18th, December 13th comes back. All my other birthdays seem to be right...

So any more ideas, anyone???

Apple iPhone - Visual Calendar I just purchased my first iPod -- 4th gen, 32gb. I have used Macs for 15 years, and Palm products for at least 5, but this is my first experience with ipod.

I like many things about it, so far. HOWEVER -- I can not BELIEVE that these idjit developers didn't put a week view in the default Calendar app. No week view?? SERIOUSLY??

I have already downloaded the "Week Cal" app, and it's a big step in the right direction. But does anyone have a good all-in-one solution to recommend? Something like DateBk4 from the Palm OS, or something more like iCal? It must be able to sync with iCal, but I never sync with online calendars so that wouldn't matter to me. I already use a good organizer/scheduler (Life Balance), but I need a good visual calendar to go with it.

Check out Pocket Informant. It used to be a palm app as well. It is very much like datebook and can use the emoji icons to make it look very much like datebook. It syncs with google calendar and also with toodledoical for to dos. I use it and am very pleased. Still miss datebook but am using Pimlical for the desktop so I can sync pocket informant to google and then to Pimlical ( desktop app made by the same developer as datebook).

When I looked at the help files it states that pocket informant syncs with google calendar. Ical and outlook need to be synced with google calendar so that pocket informant can then read them. Toodledoical was a special ical from the toodledo website that syncs with google calendar. So I was not helpful for you to sync ical calendars without using the cloud. I had hoped PI would work for you.

As a former Palm addict, I also tried Pocket Informant, but found it lacking. The app that does it all is CalenGoo. It was somewhat slow on my 3G but is blazingly fast on my iPhone 4. It syncs with Google Calendar almost flawlessly (nothing is perfectly flawless) which means I can use my desktop for multiple input then immediately copy the info to my iPhone. Likewise, when I'm at my office and put an appointment into my iPhone, I can sync it wirelessly to my desktop at my home. It is always up-to-date. I hope it is as satisfying for you as it has been for my use.

"Yes, CalenGoo can do this, but currently you still need a Google account to install CalenGoo. However you do not have to use it afterward. Just turn "Settings", "Display and Use", "Advanced", "General", "Show iPhone calendars" on, return to the calendar view to let CalenGoo load your calendars and then choose another default calendar under "Settings", "Display and Use", "Edit view", "Default calendar". You should also turn "Settings", "Auto sync" and "Settings", "Show login" off.

Afterward CalenGoo will work with your iPhone's calendars. You do not need to sync CalenGoo and you do not need to use the Google account that you created to install it.

In a future version it won't be necessary to have a Google account to install CalenGoo, but currently it reads e.g. the time zone information from this account. Additionally you can use shared calendars like holiday or sports calendars this way. They will be displayed in addition to your iPhone calendars in CalenGoo's calendar views."

I was very pleased. The designer responded within 2 hours of my query, and his instructions worked perfectly. Just make sure you set up a Google Calendar account before you install. As he says above, you don't need to sync to it -- you just need to have a username and password for the original installation.

I used one of my calendars from iCal as my default calendar, then added all my other iCal calendars as well.

Just noticed a problem with my Iphone 3GS. I have multiple versions of each of my calendar on the iPhone. I'm syncing using MobileMe.

I have several calendars: Business, Family Activity, Holidays, etc on my Mac. These sync via MobileME and on MobileME and on my various Macs I see only one version of each calendar.

However on the iPhone, I have multiple versions of each calendar. However not all of the information in the main calendar is duplicated in the additional versions of each calendar.

Is there some way to reset the calendar information on the iPhone so that it syncs accurately? Do I just start from my Mac and Reset Sync Services or do I delete all the calendar info from the iPhone?

When you sync to MM, you don't also sync to you computer or you'll get duplicates. There is a procedure to eliminate you iCal entries on iPhone. Then u sync to just MM.

I'm not syncing to the computer and to MM. The problem doesn't seem to be with the MM sync process but with something on the iPhone. Also I'm not seeing duplicate events but rather duplicate Calendars.

Some of the events are duplicated within the Calendars but not all.

What is the procedure you reference below to reset the Calendar on the iPhone?

This is not intuitive at all and I still struggle with it, but if you have iTunes set to sync and you have MobileMe set to sync, you'll end up with multiple versions. I've had it happen with both calendars and contacts.

With both sync's on I only got duplicate entries, not multiple Calendars.

I've had this issue before. On the iPhone, go to settings>mail>mobile me and turn off calendar syncing. When it asks, delete the calendar on the iphone. After it deletes, turn back on syncing and everything should fall into place without duplicates.
