Apple iPhone - Gmail app

I downloaded the Gmail app just to play around with for sending and recieving my emails.

I find my self at this time using it more than my normal iphone mail app.

I'm not sure why. Is anyone else using the Gmail app rather than the iphone mail app?

Genius Report by Andrew Munchbach on 10/8/10

Last month, we reported on the planned shuttering of the cross-browser, bookmark-syncing service Xmarks. This month, we are happy to inform you that is looks like Xmarks will live on. According to a recent blog post by the company, an outpouring of support from users has drastically changed the companyĆ¢€™s plans. As Xmarks explains:

Iphone Syncing

The past ten days have been an amazing lesson in the power of community. Not in the web 2.0 social graph' sense' I'm talking about old school community with users speaking up, speaking out and banding together. Thank you Xmarks users. You told the world it was simply unacceptable for our service to shut down and it worked. Thanks to your passion, Xmarks now has multiple offers from companies ready and willing to take over the service and keep making browser sync better and better!

The company does note that no deal has been finalized, but they are confident with multiple offers on the table Xmarks will be able to stay open for business. At time of publishing, over 35,000 users had pledged to pay between $10 and $20 per year for the service. Hit the read link to read the full post.

ITunes phishing scam

New Phishing Attack Targets Apple iTunes, Security Firm Says
Published October 05, 2010 |FoxNews.com

PandaLabs

A new phishing scam targets iTunes users, seeking to con them into clicking a link by underscoring a massive purchase. The faulty math is even more reason to click on the link to some.

Got iTunes? Be careful, you might get iScammed too.

iPhone Phishing Scam
Spam Phishing email apple iphone itunes
A new cyberscam has been targeting the tens of millions of users of Apple's iTunes music service, as crooks phish for confidential bank information.

According to security analysis firm PandaLabs, a cleverly crafted e-mail is landing in e-mail in-boxes, informing people that they have made an expensive purchase on iTunes. The concerned user quickly tries to resolve the problem by clicking on a link in the e-mail -- which is always a mistake, though an easy one to make.

After clicking the link the user is asked to download a fake PDF reader, which redirects the user to infected Web pages (mostly Russian) containing Trojans among other malware that steal the user's personal details.

"It never ceases to surprise us that the techniques used to trick victims continue to be so simple," said Luis Corrons, Technical Director of PandaLabs. "It's often difficult not to fall in the trap. That's why it's absolutely crucial that when you use platforms such as iTunes, and you receive these types of notifications, never go to the website through the e-mail, but rather from the platform itself."

Corrons told FoxNews.com that Panda has seen "around 300,000 e-mails pass through their spam filter over the last weekend alone," a relatively low number considering the vast flow of e-mail on the Internet today. But Corrons predicts "the number could be a lot higher in days to come."

Panda was uncertain how many people have been taken in by the scam so far, however.

"Whilst Panda do not have a figure on the numbers taken in by the scam, the Antiphishing Working Group has blocked some of the web addresses linked to the fake e-mail in order to protect users, he told FoxNews.com.

Apple did not respond to requests for confirmation of the scam, or questions
about whether it plans to address the situation. But the company advises
users who suspect they have received an e-mail that may be a phishing attack
should forward it toreportphishing@....

Phone thinks headphones are plugged it

Apple iPhone - Phone thinks headphones are plugged it

My wife is having a problem with her iPhone 4. It is acting as if the headphones are plugged in when they aren't. She can only hear a phone call if she has the headphones plugged in. If she removes them, she can't hear the call. She can speak and be heard, but she can't hear the person on the other side. We rebooted several times to no avail. Plugged in and unplugged the headphones several times. Made a reservation at the genius bar for tomorrow morning, but I was hoping maybe someone here had an idea.

You can try doing a Restore in iTunes but it sounds like a hardware issue unless there is a Bluetooth device that is pairing and you don't realize it...

-----
Mine just did that yesterday. What a coincidence! In my case, it turned out to be an aluminum chip from work. (I'm a machinist) Carefully prodding it with a toothpick dislodged it for me.

-----
This may not be the same in iPhones, but it is a pretty common problem on Palm phones.

It is often (not always, evidently) caused by a glitch in the Pandora software. Does she use Pandora, or other "radio"-type software? If so -- enter that app, and start playing something. Plug the earphones in and out -- it might take a few tries. Exit the program. See if that works -- if not, I'll look up more solutions from the Palm forums. I believe there have been several different processes needed to cure it for different Palm owners.

Missing Settings Items

Apple iPhone Email - Missing Settings Items

I have a 3g iphone and have set up 4 email accounts under settings, no problems. Yesterday I tapped the mail app. and saw the 4 accounts that I had set up.

When I went under settings to change the password on one of them, "mail" "calendar" and "contacts" are no longer under settings, therefore I cannot add or delete email accounts. The only things under settings now are airplane mode, wifi, notifications, carrier, sounds, brightness, wallpaper, general, messages, ipod, store and then the apps i have on my phone.

How this may have happened and how I can correct it?

Usually when something crazy like that happens, a reboot fixes it.

Is your mail app in some folder on your iphone? If so bring it out on the home
page and see if that helps, after a reboot.

-----
Pressing the power and home button fixed it....the funny thing is that when I called Apple, they were clueless...

I finally figured out that the reason those items disappeared was due to using CategoriesSB app which allows you to moved apps into folders.

Odd email behavior

Apple iPhone email - Odd email behavior

I have a 3gs with OS 4.0.1 and it has worked flawlessly since I bought it. Recently, I've noticed the following.

I have two email accounts on it, Exchange and Me.com. About half of the time, when I go to the Mail app and click the update icon, it spins, then stops without downloading the mail. I repeat this process and get the same result.

However, if I then switch to the other account, the mail either downloads immediately or downloads after clicking the icon.

Returning to the original account, the mail downloads correctly.

Again, half of the time things work as they should. Simply entering mail it, it updates or the clicking the icon works.

When I have this situation, I need only go to the other account, it works, then come back to the first.

Very strange.

iPhone email
Odd email behavior apple iphone email
The me.com account. It's very odd when computers/phones don't operate consistently. At least half of the time, the me.com email downloads fine.

I have shut the phone down, both power off with the red swipe and holding the buttons down longer for a full reset. Doesn't seem to have resolved this. It's been going on for several weeks.

Very strange that all I need to do is switch to the Exchange account, then back to the me.com account and the mail downloads as it should. I can click on the icon for the me.com account five times, and have it try five times, get the 'updating' message, yet the updated time doesn't change and the mail doesn't download. Switch to Exchange and back and voila it works as it should.

WiFi shuts off

Apple iPhone - WiFi shuts off

Recently my iPhone 4 iOS4.1 has started to "log off" WiFi when it goes to sleep. I thought iOS4 was supposed stay logged on all the time. Any ideas?

When I first got my iPhone 4, WiFi stayed on even when it was asleep, my understanding was that was for apps like Skype to be able to get calls while asleep.

iPhone Wifi
Speed Test for iPhone WiFi
No, WiFi always shuts off after it goes to sleep to save battery.

Wifi always shuts off after X minutes of sleeping it might have reconnected so fast you didn't notice or you the phone wasn't asleep long enough for it to shut off (I think it is 15 min ).

The only exception is if there is no 3G or EDGE (airplane mode?), it may stay on but otherwise it shuts off.

If you look in the manual it can give you specifics but it does shut off.

Google Goggles now available on iPhone in Google Mobile App via Google Mobile

Apple iPhone Google - Open your eyes: Google Goggles now available on iPhone in Google Mobile App via Google Mobile

Searching with Google on your mobile phone can be an eye-opening experience. Now your phone's camera can even help to find out more about the world around you.

Back in December we introduced Google Goggles on Android: it lets you search by taking pictures. Today, we're excited to announce that Goggles is now a feature of Google Mobile App for iPhone. Google Mobile App already lets you speak your queries, and it can also use your phone's location to give you more relevant search results.

iPhone Google
Google Mobile for Apple Iphone
In the new version of Google Mobile App just tap on the camera button to search using Goggles. Goggles will analyze the image and highlight the objects it recognizes -- just click on them to find out more. You can see how this works in this short video:

Computer vision is a hard problem and Google Goggles is still a Labs product. It works well for things such as landmarks, logos and the covers of books, DVDs and games. However, it doesn't yet work for some things you might want to try like animals, plants or food.

Google Mobile App with Google Goggles is now available in the Apple App Store. Just search for Google Mobile App' and download the latest version - it's free. It will gradually be appearing in all App Stores around the world starting from today.

Goggles is enabled only for English-speaking users, and since it requires an auto-focusing camera it is supported only on iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 running iOS 4 or above. Visit our Help Center to learn more or send us your feedback and questions in our Help Forum.

So step away from your computer, get your Goggles on, and search the world around you.

The Google Voice App is included in this update of Google Mobile.

The Google Voice will pull up your contact list. That is something that Apple would not allow before. This is new.

After further looking, I agree that it is just the web app. t is pulling up some of my contacts but they are not from my Google contact list in the iPhone.

Well, I can get to my Google contacts in the Google Voice app.

-----
It is nice that it is interfacing with contacts. It has listed my contacts twice and I am thinking it is getting it from my contacts list from my gmail contacts and not my mobile me contacts in my address book. or maybe it is getting it from both places ... not sure.

Will be interesting to see if the google voice feature will become a standalone feature not using Safari and a direct voip type interface would be nice too.

-----
Thanks for alerting us to this update to the google mobile app ... I am having fun with the google goggles feature. I am using the camera icon to view vacation photos on my ipad and it is recognizing some of the landmarks fairly well and now I can find out the names of some of the places we saw in various cities that I have forgotten. Like all the cathedrals and such that you see in Europe.

It even thought the stripes in my husband's shirt was a barcode and made an attempt at locating a product. LOL

Overall it is doing a fairly good attempt at this camera or image recognition and is amazing that our technology is coming along so fast.

Auxiliary audio output: NOT car audio

Apple iPhone - auxiliary audio output: NOT car audio

I have a question about connecting my 3GS iPhone to any radio or stereo with an auxiliary input.

When connecting with many stereos, I get a constant, rhythmic pop-pop-popping noise. Sometimes I can fidget with the connection at one end or the other and make it go away, but not always.

FYI, the connection with the input in my Camry Hybrid works with no trouble like this at all.

I'm using different cables in all locations. In my car, it's the white cable that came with the phone (or with an older iPod, maybe). The other cables are aftermarket cables picked up from Radio Shack.

iPhone radio
apps apple iphone radio
It sounds like a ground loop to me. Redundant ground connection - somewhere. Are you using a car charger as well? If so, unplug the charger and see if the problem goes away.

-----
Take the known good cable from the car and try it where you are having the problem, and try the questionable one in the car. See if the problem moves, eliminate the cable from equation.

This could be interference caused by the cell phone. Mine is set for a minimum apps to access Push data and with some radios I hear static about every 15-20 minutes.

If it were the phone itself, the GSM interference would happen regardless of whether the phone was plugged into something or not.

That happens with mere proximity to unshielded speakers.

I'm guessing that the phone is almost always plugged in when in the car (that's what I was doing when I had one and do now with my iTouch), but is it always plugged in when near those other stereos?

If not, then if the same noise happens while not attached, that will eliminate the cabling.

Another question for the OP: Before, you said you were using the AUX input on the stereo, which lead me to assume you are using the headphone jack of the iPhone, but your answer to the question indicates that you're using the dock connector which means using a USB connection. Please clarify which is being used.'

So far as I know, if you're using the dock connector to a USB port, then it is highly unlikely to be a cabling issue.

-----
Replying to all in an effort to reach some clarity...

1: I'm using a stereo connecting wire, run from the headphone jack on the iPhone to a similar jack in my car. The white cable I'm using for this connection is trouble-free.

2. The phone is never plugged in to a power source or charger during these operations.

3. I took the white cable from my car and used it to connect my iPhone to a stereo in my home, and got the same constant clicking noise.

4. The cables I've tried to use for connecting to home stereo equipment and radios are clearly of varying quality, but they all produce this noise. (I'd found a cheapy cable, and before testing it, thought I'd buy a couple others to just install in stereos and radios and just leave for future use, rather than moving one cable around. I also carry one in my briefcase)

5. The sound can be better described as a pulsation, audible at a constant rate, approximately two clicks per second. I can hear the music I'm playing, but the pulsation renders the audio unlistenable.

I'm still looking for ideas.

-----
Try putting your phone into airplane mode and see if that fixes it. If so it is the cell tower signal getting into the audio cable.

The solution would be to get a shielded audio cable.

Apple iPhone app - iPhone resizes every app change

My iPhone 3GS has lately started freezing and trying to shut it down to reboot takes multiple tries but I finally was able to do it. Now the screen constantly resizes at each app change and I actually have to move the screen up or down to see the clock when in some apps. No rebooting seems to solve this.

So far it has not affected anything else that I've found out about

Lol you have the option for impaired people turned on. It's so you can use three fingers to zoom in and out, making the screen zoom in for sight impared.

-----
No, I don't have it on. The 3 fingers don't even do anything anymore

It resizes back to the size it was when I opened the app. It's just weird for it to open and resize exactly to the correct size, there is no change in font or anything.

I'm going to try and take some of the photos and apps off to see if this might have anything to do with having go much on the iPhone and it not being able to handle the load.

Apple iPhone - iTunes 10.0.1 brings Game Center compatibility indicators

Last night Apple updated iTunes to version 10.0.1 and perhaps the most important new feature is Ping Sidebar. Besides the new Ping features Apple fixes tons of bugs and added a neat little time saver to the App Store. For those who are interested in finding out if the app they want to download is compatible with Game Center, they traditionally would need to scan the app description or take a look at the featured Game Center section.

Now, Apple has added Game Center compatibility indicators to Game Center apps. If you want to find out if the app youĆ¢€™re looking to buy works with Game Center simply take a look at the upper-right-hand-corner of the iTunes page and if you see the pictured logo (above) youĆ¢€™re good to go. As far as we can see, this feature is not yet available on the mobile version of the App Store.

Up until the past couple of days I've been a satisfied user of the Weather Bug app.(I have several others including TWC loaded in a weather folder but my default *has* been Weather Bug).

No longer. They have an intrusive ad for Stormchasers on Discovery that plays whenever I attempt to change app views (forecast for another city, conditions, maps, etc).

The fact that it has an especially irritating and loud audio component was the final straw.

I'm willing to pay a nominal fee for a good, clean weather app.

No, iPod doesn't work that way but there are some applications using which you can stream via bluetooth.

I use FM transmitter to play songs from the iPhone.

-----
Doesn't Ford Sync have an iPod cable? (I know it's from Microsoft, but still...) Or at least the stereo have an aux-in jack?

----
It has a USB cable, can read anything from a flash/thumb drive to an iPod to a large external hard drive. My Acura also has a USB cable but I think I only used it to test as it also has Bluetooth A2DP so as soon as I turn on the car it pairs with my phone and I can play audio, if I make or receive a phone call it pauses and lets me answer or decline.

The advantage Ford Sync has is that you can pair multiple devices (up to 8 I think) so those of us who have two phones or a phone and an iPad and/or passengers can pair their devices to listen to content, etc.

-----
Yes you should be able to play your music wirelessly as well. When setting it up there should be that option. To play music wirelessly. I know on my ford fusion it was.

-----
My Honda Civic has a USB socket where you can plug the iPhone cable into and then it recognizes it as an iPod. Then I can control my music from the car's controls, not on the iPod app where it says something like "Accessory in use" or something. And it charges the phone. So it's cool.

GV Connect & GV Mobile+

Apple iPhone apps - GV Connect & GV Mobile+
According to the App itself, GV Connect is NOT affiliated with Google or Google Voice. For more info, the app says to see the website http://homepage.mac.com/aamann/GV_Connect.htmlI've not thoroughly explored GV Connect and GV Mobile+ yet, but having a tough time with both. And, I can't really determine the functional difference. So far, I prefer the original HTML5 Google Voice.

GV Mobile+ may have solved the problem of trying to send multiple addressees a single SMS message.

GV Mobile
ihone apps GV Mobile
In the data entry screen for SMS for GV Mobile+ where one enters an addressee (from your contact list, NOT your GV Contact list), there is a + symbol which implies the user can add an addressee. Apparently, however, all it does is send you again to your Contact list and you may enter a different (NOT additional) addressee.

So, GV Mobile+ does NOT apparently have the capability to send the same Text message to multiple addressees.

Most other cell phone I'm familiar with permit multiple addressee for SMS messages, including those on AT&T.

visual calendar

Apple iPhone - Visual Calendar I just purchased my first iPod -- 4th gen, 32gb. I have used Macs for 15 years, and Palm products for at least 5, but this is my first experience with ipod.

I like many things about it, so far. HOWEVER -- I can not BELIEVE that these idjit developers didn't put a week view in the default Calendar app. No week view?? SERIOUSLY??

I have already downloaded the "Week Cal" app, and it's a big step in the right direction. But does anyone have a good all-in-one solution to recommend? Something like DateBk4 from the Palm OS, or something more like iCal? It must be able to sync with iCal, but I never sync with online calendars so that wouldn't matter to me. I already use a good organizer/scheduler (Life Balance), but I need a good visual calendar to go with it.

iPhone Calendar
Calendar of apple iphone
Check out Pocket Informant. It used to be a palm app as well. It is very much like datebook and can use the emoji icons to make it look very much like datebook. It syncs with google calendar and also with toodledoical for to dos. I use it and am very pleased. Still miss datebook but am using Pimlical for the desktop so I can sync pocket informant to google and then to Pimlical ( desktop app made by the same developer as datebook).

-----
When I looked at the help files it states that pocket informant syncs with google calendar. Ical and outlook need to be synced with google calendar so that pocket informant can then read them. Toodledoical was a special ical from the toodledo website that syncs with google calendar. So I was not helpful for you to sync ical calendars without using the cloud. I had hoped PI would work for you.

-----
As a former Palm addict, I also tried Pocket Informant, but found it lacking. The app that does it all is CalenGoo. It was somewhat slow on my 3G but is blazingly fast on my iPhone 4. It syncs with Google Calendar almost flawlessly (nothing is perfectly flawless) which means I can use my desktop for multiple input then immediately copy the info to my iPhone. Likewise, when I'm at my office and put an appointment into my iPhone, I can sync it wirelessly to my desktop at my home. It is always up-to-date. I hope it is as satisfying for you as it has been for my use.

-----
Here ya go:

"Yes, CalenGoo can do this, but currently you still need a Google account to install CalenGoo. However you do not have to use it afterward. Just turn "Settings", "Display and Use", "Advanced", "General", "Show iPhone calendars" on, return to the calendar view to let CalenGoo load your calendars and then choose another default calendar under "Settings", "Display and Use", "Edit view", "Default calendar". You should also turn "Settings", "Auto sync" and "Settings", "Show login" off.

Afterward CalenGoo will work with your iPhone's calendars. You do not need to sync CalenGoo and you do not need to use the Google account that you created to install it.

In a future version it won't be necessary to have a Google account to install CalenGoo, but currently it reads e.g. the time zone information from this account. Additionally you can use shared calendars like holiday or sports calendars this way. They will be displayed in addition to your iPhone calendars in CalenGoo's calendar views."

I was very pleased. The designer responded within 2 hours of my query, and his instructions worked perfectly. Just make sure you set up a Google Calendar account before you install. As he says above, you don't need to sync to it -- you just need to have a username and password for the original installation.

I used one of my calendars from iCal as my default calendar, then added all my other iCal calendars as well.
