Apple iPhone - iHome Radio and iPhone 3GS - No Love No Mo'

I have an iHome radio http://www.ihomeaudio.com/iP90BZ/
http://www.ihomeaudio.com/iP90BZ/ ) I use at work. I keep my iPhone plugged in all day, and listen to music or podcasts.

I'm not sure what exactly happened, but I did a system restore a couple weeks ago. I also recently upgraded to iTunes 10.x (whatever the latest version is), and somehow the radio and the iPhone are not loving each other. If I had my phone on vibrate, I could plug it on the radio, and get the double-buzz indicating it was set and locked. I could listen to my tunes, and no trouble.

Now, it doesn't seem to recognize it at all. The only way I know there is a connection is the battery indicator has the lightning bolt on it, and if the battery is down, I can see it charge up.

Two things, the double buss is not "set and lock" but "thank you for plugging me in to charge". Listen to it, it is saying "Thank you."

The other is have you inspected the 30-pin connector on the phone for pocket lint or something else blocking a few of the pins? This is starting to come up on other lists.

Sorry for my word choice... but I knew the iPhone was connected by the vibration.

As for lint - I was just at an Apple store a few weeks back, and they checked the slot at the bottom and the headphone jack for lint. All was good. I used some canned air today just to see if anything was in the charging slot, then plugged the phone into the iHome radio. No vibration or anything - just the lightning bolt.

Try the other end of the phone... sounds like something is making the phone think its in earphone mode. See if there's something in the earphone jack receptacle.

Sound plays fine when not plugged in... and I've had headphones plugged in that work properly. So, I don't believe it's either suggestion.

I'm starting to think the phone is on its last legs. I'm not sure if I want to keep the iPhone (go for iPhone 4) or get a Droid on Verizon. Hearing lots of compelling arguments on both sides.

No worries about the choice of words, some times I am just stubborn and others dense.

So the connector and the jack are not plugged, and you get sound when off the iHome, so the jack is not broken.

This is a basic, but sometimes we forget to check. Is the iHome volume turned up or on mute? Is it set to use the iPhone as the source? When I plug-in the 30-pin connector in my truck, the volume knob on the radio takes control of my 3GS's iPod.app.

I'm hoping it is something silly, rather than expensive.

To get trashed emails back:1 tap arrow upper left Mailboxes 2 pull inboxes up past all inboxes to reveal Accounts with colored icons for email providers(gmail, hotmail,aol etc). Tap on icon for mail you want back. 4 the fourth line down is trash. 5 tap and trashed emails are listed. That's the place.

That's great for Mail.app on a Mac, but not on a iPhone. There are no arrows and no Trash Folder.

BTW the subject line was "iHome Radio and iPhone 3GS ".

I've been wondering about that. Over the last 2-3 days I've been getting a few replies obviously in the wrong threads. As this is most unusual (although people trying to start new threads just by changing the subject line is not), I wondered if Gmail was mixing up my "conversations". It appears not, so is it a problem with using the mail app on the iPhone?

Is there a way to listen to a radio station on a 3G if the station doesn't have an online site?

A couple of hundred stations do have dedicated iPhone apps, it is wonderful to have a "one tap" icon on the screen and get a distant station when I am driving. Radio networks such as Clear Channel have applications that let you select the city and station, but of course those are unworkable while you are driving.

If the station has no online presence at all, you are out of luck - but - the iPhone is rumored to already have an FM chip embedded. We can hope that IOS 4.3 will activate it. The last I heard, Apple was holding back until they could find a way for the user to tag a song and buy it in iTunes. But I hope they abandon that and just let us use the radio.

Downloaded Pocket Tunes for my iPhone 3Gs and it failed multiple times in Irvine, CA, on a 19 mile bicycle ride. Had to stop and reset. It works fine in my house with our WiFi network.

I believe this is due to the really bad AT&T network locally. I've complained a number of times and always they tell me, We're trying to upgrade the network. Maybe so, but it's still bad.

BTW, I'm an XM/Sirius customer, and that company still wants $2.99 per month for service using the app on the iPhone. Anything to squeeze the customer for more money.

I have a question about connecting my 3GS iPhone to any radio or stereo with an auxiliary input.

When connecting with many stereos, I get a constant, rhythmic pop-pop-popping noise. Sometimes I can fidget with the connection at one end or the other and make it go away, but not always.

FYI, the connection with the input in my Camry Hybrid works with no trouble like this at all.

I'm using different cables in all locations. In my car, it's the white cable that came with the phone (or with an older iPod, maybe). The other cables are aftermarket cables picked up from Radio Shack.

It sounds like a ground loop to me. Redundant ground connection - somewhere. Are you using a car charger as well? If so, unplug the charger and see if the problem goes away.

Take the known good cable from the car and try it where you are having the problem, and try the questionable one in the car. See if the problem moves, eliminate the cable from equation.

This could be interference caused by the cell phone. Mine is set for a minimum apps to access Push data and with some radios I hear static about every 15-20 minutes.

If it were the phone itself, the GSM interference would happen regardless of whether the phone was plugged into something or not.

That happens with mere proximity to unshielded speakers.

I'm guessing that the phone is almost always plugged in when in the car (that's what I was doing when I had one and do now with my iTouch), but is it always plugged in when near those other stereos?

If not, then if the same noise happens while not attached, that will eliminate the cabling.

Another question for the OP: Before, you said you were using the AUX input on the stereo, which lead me to assume you are using the headphone jack of the iPhone, but your answer to the question indicates that you're using the dock connector which means using a USB connection. Please clarify which is being used.'

So far as I know, if you're using the dock connector to a USB port, then it is highly unlikely to be a cabling issue.

Replying to all in an effort to reach some clarity...

1: I'm using a stereo connecting wire, run from the headphone jack on the iPhone to a similar jack in my car. The white cable I'm using for this connection is trouble-free.

2. The phone is never plugged in to a power source or charger during these operations.

3. I took the white cable from my car and used it to connect my iPhone to a stereo in my home, and got the same constant clicking noise.

4. The cables I've tried to use for connecting to home stereo equipment and radios are clearly of varying quality, but they all produce this noise. (I'd found a cheapy cable, and before testing it, thought I'd buy a couple others to just install in stereos and radios and just leave for future use, rather than moving one cable around. I also carry one in my briefcase)

5. The sound can be better described as a pulsation, audible at a constant rate, approximately two clicks per second. I can hear the music I'm playing, but the pulsation renders the audio unlistenable.

I'm still looking for ideas.

Try putting your phone into airplane mode and see if that fixes it. If so it is the cell tower signal getting into the audio cable.

The solution would be to get a shielded audio cable.

I have that apps, but now if I'm listening, it will go away when the screen fade. When I push the home buttom I will hear it again what is happening, before it was ok
