I just noticed. I can loop music on my iPod but can't seem to do it on iphone4. Is this true or am I missing something?

When you play something on your iPhone, tap the screen so the bar that shows the length and current position is showing. The small icon on the left side is the loop function. Tap on it to cycle between looping the current song, or the entire playlist, or to turn it off again. The shuffle button is on the other side.

I rarely even want to "shuffle" -- and most of my ipod-playing is audiobook or podcast -- but I looked at this. Apparently it's only on "music" playlists -- in an audiobook the icon on the right is a "speed button" for 1/2x 1x or 2x.

I do make extensive use of the 30-second-rewind button below the middle of the position-bar.

I have an iPhone 4, My Ford has Synch and whenever I'm in my car the iPod automatically connects via the blue tooth. It's not audible unless I change the radio to media, but it runs the battery on my phone down. I have looked all over the settings for the iPod and iPhone and just can't see how to turn it off so it doesn't start playing automatically.

Do you have the USB port in your Ford? I got a 2011 Mariner with sync & copied my music files onto the flash drive. I can voice command the music, no battery drain on my cell, & since my iPhone is also synched, the music turns off when the phone rings thru the sound system.

iPod has Distorted Play

I bought my iPhone 4 in mid December, but have used the iPod app as a stand-alone player, without earphones. Recent attempts to use the iPhone 4 as a mp3 with ear buds result in some music sounding distorted.

It sounds like a novelty song with the singers pretending to sing underwater. It happens only with the ear buds, both the old ear buds and with the new ones that came with the phone.

Do I need to do something differently, or do I need to exercise the warranty?

Does anyone have any suggestions/recommendations for the best all around car stereo that's compatiable with the iPhone 4. I had an alpine model that allowed me to operate my iPhone 3GS music via a 3 inch touch screen that also served as a navigation system "for an added fee" and bluetooth capabilities with parrot also at an additional cost.

Since that unit been stolen out of my car I wanted other possibilities for replacement before I give another 1000.00 bucks to alpine and the installers .

I have a Pioneer DEH-P7000BT, which I had installed into a 1996 Mercedes (in place of a radio/cassette player). Had an iPod wired in (which I just leave in the car), satellite radio wired into the aux and a microphone by the sun visor.

The BT works great with iPhone 4's voice control for hands free dialing. Great for an old car.

Car use

I have a 2nd Generation iPod Touch that my wife and I use to listen to audio books while we are making our weekly 100 mile (one way) drive. I also 'have' a Kensington Liquid Aux holder/stand/charger. I like the fact that it charges the iPod while it is playing. Last week the part that fits into the power port broke - the tip came off and it tripped a fuse in the car.

I got the tip out, so there is no damage. I was able to re-assemble the item but I don't trust the thing. If I were to make a permanent fix I would glue the plastic seam the separated back and hope that works. Like I said, I don't trust is.

On the trip back I plugged the aux cord in and it worked fine. It did not charge the iPod though. I plugged in the charger cord I have through the working power port, but the sound cut off as soon as I did. I can use an arrangement like this when using house power, but not a car.

I am not fond of putting the weight of the iPod int the power port - I was afraid of damaging the port, but it looks like I damaged the device instead.

Does anybody know of a device that will let me charge and play the iPod at the same time? There is something from Griffin that works like the Liquid Aux but it uses FM and it still mounts in the power port. I attempted to use the car's USB port, but that did not work well. Is there something that uses a suction mount that allows me to charge and play at the same time.

Call Kensington, they will probably replace it for you. They have replaced two trackball devices for me over the last 12 years, no questions asked. And once was just because the silver paint came off. I was just trying to give them feed back ask to the quality of their paint choice.

Nike + iPod?

I was just using the Apple "Settings" app and looking at the "App" preferences that are in the last half of the opening screen. While there, I noticed an app titled "Nike + iPod". It has a lot of preferences and I turned it "On" and found they were all live and settable. I turned it back "Off". But the main thing I wanted to ask is: What is it there for? I don't have an app called "Nike + iPod" or anything resembling that. Any ideas?

You are right. I tried to delete it and found out I can't. So it must be one of Apple's own apps. Nike must be paying Apple a bundle for the exclusiveness.

Push calender and reminders

Does a really good calender that pushes reminders and adds as a nudnik exist for the iphone? My kids bought me an ipod touch last year and I have been researching all kinds of calenders.

Most of them have synched with Google calender.

I have found none of them impressive.

I need something to push me to make phone calls and run errands. It has to be easy to set up and easy to reset reminders. Preferably at the push of a button. Does such a thing exist for iphone?

Are these calenders not working properly for me because I am using an ipod touch?

At the moment, I am ashamed to say I have gone back to using the little calender with its reminders on my cheap Nokia phone. At least it keeps reminding me to do things... drives my fellow workers nuts when they hear it ringing... But at least I get things done in the end.

Is there a solution for this? Will I be able to test run it on my ipod touch before I run out and buy that iphone that I have been hankering for,..

The built in calendar synced with Google Calendar works fine and gives "push" or pop up notifications, I use it all day every day. It definitely takes 3-4 steps to reset the reminder to a different time but is very easy to do - use it on both iPhone and iPad WiFi.

Thought she said iPod Touch, as long as there was a data connection at some point and the Google Calendar synced to the phone the reminders pop up just as if they were "pushed' they are stored on the phone when the events are synced. My iPad doesn't have data connection when I am in the car, etc and the events still pop up the same as they do on my iPhone.

Slow Response to Touch

I have an iPhone 3GS. It's about 16 months old. I've upgraded to the 4.1 OS.

It seems that in the past few weeks the touch response has periodic delays. I can open the browser, and tap the Bookmarks button, and nothing... for about 4-5 seconds. Then it will kick in. The same with unlocking and entering my four-digit passcode. It will take a few seconds, then it will register the digits.

Anyone else having this trouble? I know that I am at about 80% memory capacity on the phone, so I've deleted some songs, podcasts and pictures, but I can't imagine that would do it. I've done more than one hard reboots, and still it continues.

I had the same experience and in speaking with other iPhone owners on the 4.1 OS software...I learned they were experiencing the same thing and the remedy was upgrading to the iPhone 4. I did it too.

I also went to www.cellitused.com and got $240.00 for my iPhone 3GS 32G. Once I get my new phone and make the transfer ... I will send them the old. Therefore getting the new phone for @ $50.00 more!

It's the cheapest, chintziest watchband I've ever seen. It's unfinished leather on the inside and frankly looks as though it were made of cardboard. It reminds me of those terrible belts they sell to women for their dresses.

AFAIK, Pixopop are available online at their site, 19$ ea. On eBay, they are cheaper.

Or get to a FOSSIL store, get one of their cloth 22mm watchbands and clip your nano touch to that. they are $20.00

iPod starts playing randomly

Anyone have any suggestions on how to stop the iPod function to stop randomly playing? Sometimes my iPhone 4 is in my pocket and starts playing the last song I was playing. Sometimes I'm using another app and the music starts playing. Any thoughts?

This has happened to me, when I have played the ipod and not quit. You can double tap the home key, bringing up the icons that are being used by the multitasking capabilities of your iphone and press on the ipod icon until it wiggles and close it out by tapping the minus sign.

Another, scenario ... you accidentally hit the home button once that brings up the spotlight search window on the iPhone, where you have searched prior for a song and they are listed. Brushing one of the songs will start it to play. It seems this has also happened to me, when I have accidentally.

I ended up ordering the search choices under settings>General>spotlight search> You can move the order of search results with the triple bars on the right hand side or uncheck those you don't want to show up in the search. Move the music down in the list order and or try removing it from your spotlight search results if you don't need to search for songs.

The first thing I check when it happened was my alarms but nothing was set. I will try to reorder the spotlight search but I don't think that was it since I wasn't using the phone when it happened most recently. It was sitting on my lap with the screen black.

Also, it always plays the last song that I was playing. I've started making my sleep music be the last song before exiting the iPod app so at least when the music start playing, it's very quiet. :-)

Here is another scenario, that might be occurring, since it is always the last song you played.

You have played a song using the ipod icon. You quit or stop the song. This seems to be the case even if you exit by the wiggle method as well.

Ok, you double tap your home button accidentally and the multitasking view of icons running are shown. You also swipe to the right and the controls for the ipad are then visible. You brush the play button.

I know this sounds like a lot of accidentally pressing and pushing stuff to happen. But it has happened to me just putting my iphone down on the nightstand or into my purse.

That is about all I can suggest. LOL

It's very random. It hasn't happened since about 1pm today. But it happened on earlier in the day too. I know if you double tap the home button when the screen is dark, that brings up the iPod controls. I tried to triple tap but that doesn't make it play. You still have to touch the screen on the play button.

I don't have an iPhone yet. It is funny that I bought an iPod Touch first generation immediately after they first came out. There weren't even cases available for them yet. I was definitely one of the first people to buy an iPod Touch. Yet, for whatever reason, I wasn't interested in an iPhone until now. I will be getting my iPhone in October, so I am trying to learn about its features by reading your questions and comments.

It is hard to comprehend certain things if you can not visualize them. Maybe because I never owned an iPhone before, some of the things I read here sound strange to me. But I am sure that once I have that phone in my hand, it will be an easier hands-on experience. I love gadgets, so now I am dying to get my new phone and start learning along with all of you iPhone pros. :)

The iPhone is very easy to use. I don't think you will have any problem. I would suggest that you go to the nearest Apple store and get them to demo the iPhone for you. If you can't get to an Apple store, search YouTube for "Apple iPhone 4". There are many videos that would be a lot of help to someone just getting started.

It should, just press the home button. I think maybe after doing a full restore using iTunes you do have to put any (even non-activated or deactivated) SIM in for it to get past the "Activation" screen then it will work fine.

Ok, I've now had the iPod Touch for about a day. It's the 3rd gen Touch, so I updated it to iOS 4.0.2 immediately... and I kinda wish I didn't.

I found the task manager completely by accident. I recall that double-clicking the Home button would take my old iPhone 3G to the first home screen, and discovered that's the way into the Task Manager, where I found almost all of the apps I had been playing with listed. It seems that there is no way to NOT leave an app open when closing it normally. And I presume that this, like in any other multitasking handheld, sucks down battery power.

And this kinda-sorta defeats the purpose of setting the email client to only use Fetch manually, because it will "fetch" when the email app is open, and it closes to the background, leaving it open and constantly connected to the server.

Is there anyway to get apps to actually close when I press the Home button to exit?

I also discovered that if I kill the Music process, the iPod function will still remember what song was playing, but it will forget where in the song it was.

Just curious, why did you get a 3rd Gen iPod touch when the 4th gen came out today? Other than that, you can manually close the apps by double pressing home, tap & hold until they shake then tap X on each until they close.

Regardless, the apps technically stop running when you home out, the ones that ask for 5, 10, 15 min shut down when they are finished, the only ones that keep running are GPS (TomTom, etc) and VoIP (Skype, etc) - everything else must close itself or the iOS will close it out, iPhone/iPod Touch just keeps the "most recent" apps listed in the tray.

Price. When Apple announced the release of the 4th gen, stores dropped the prices on the 3rd gen. I could now stretch and justify the budget to get the 32GB at the lower price, but not the "full" $300, and the 8GB just doesn't have the capacity to hold what I want.

Yeah, I know. I did say that I found the task manager and killed apps that way. But what I want to know is if I can CLOSE an app normally without having to close it, double-click, tap-hold, kill, click, etc.

Some of these were "homed" out of over 20 minutes previously, and I don't think any of them need to remain running at all. And they were still running, as some of them take a few seconds to load through a splash screen, but when launched while still in the Task Manager, they opened instantly.

I'm a recent convert to iPhone, and not necessarily in the know yet about the common complaints so apologies if this topic/question has been beaten to death already.

I'm disappointed in the quality of the sound when playing music. The iPod function doesn't sound anywhere approaching as good as my iPod classic, which blew me away when I first got it. Then today I tried listening to a streaming radio station and the quality is so poor it puts me in mind of the (really) old days of the tinny single speaker clock radios of my youth.

Am I expecting too much? Is there a setting on the device that will improve the sound quality? I've messed with the equalizer but that doesn't seem to affect the sound quality in the least. Is my experience simply a function of the media form?

I'm using an iPhone 4 through the tape deck of the JBL sound system of my car. The comparison to the iPod classic is made using the same equipment.

On your "HOme" screen, go to "Setting icon" expand it, and go to "EQ" from that, select your type of sounds... i prefer "R & B" for my listening type. Hope this will help you somehow...

My old iPhone 3G sounded about as good to me as my iPod Classic does. Trick one is to use good earbuds, and not the crap that comes with.

Unless things have changed in iPhone 4 compared to 3G, the phone part does not route out through the Dock. If she's using a BT solution, that won't matter. But if she's using a phone adapter cord between the iPhone and the car interface it does.

For the record, I ran my iPhone 3G through a Shure phone-adapter cord to an extension and then into an add-on AUX input to the car factory stereo and got quite acceptable audio results. I did not notice any change in quality when I switched back to my iPod Classic and ran the audio out through the dock connector to the same AUX input. (I'll see if there is any noticeable difference with the iPod Touch I'm about to get.)

My car isn't as quite on the inside as it used to be, but it has a very good (Bose) stereo.

After reading this thread on sound quality, I went to my car, hooked up my iPhone 4 via cassette player to cars speakers and started playing some music. I have to say the sound quality really is bad. I tried fiddling with the EQ on my iPhones settings and it made absolutely NO DIFFERENCE which preset I choose.

Does anyone else have this problem? If I choose heavy bass, it sounds the same as reduced bass or classical or R&B,etc... I'm wondering If one of the software updates actually messed up the iPhone's EQ. Someone else please try it and let me know if they can hear a difference among the different eq presets.

It is late in the UK, I've put stuff together here and here. There's a few facts which might be of interest to some readers, so I thought I'd take a moment to put them down.

Apple TV
The Apple TV runs an A4 processor

OK, as I expected international audiences lucked out on the Apple TV. We have no on device purchases (so no random podcasts, either), and without access to $0.99 show rentals the product loses a lot of its pitch for international audiences. This is compensated slightly by Apple's move to cut the price and to make set-up of new computers from which to stream content much, much easier you don't need to log in or use code numbers anymore.

A bloke from Apple confirmed the Apple TV is powered by an A4 chip. So while I can see the system doesn't run apps yet (and lack of a drive makes this challenging) I can't see any theoretical reason the device couldn't in future run apps in some way, though perhaps only streamed versions of video games controlled and hosted on an iPad. Well, so I wish, anyway.

I also predict there will be demand in future to separate audio from video streams. This will let people play their audio via the AirPort Express on their huge phat music system while watching the movie on their gazillion-inch Apple-branded TV (did I get ahead of myself there?).

There's no video in the iPod nano

Yeah, you read that right that small screen won't let you watch the tiniest video in the world. And there's no camera also. Never mind thought, it is a really nice little device. And if all you want is music the iPod shuffle is pretty good, too.

The iPod classic

Speaking to my contacts I got no sense that the iPod classic is on its way to the great product graveyard in the sky. I suspect Apple will keep selling them until people stop buying them. I do think a capacity upgrade would be nice, particularly for those who like to use their classic to play lossless audio files. The product isn't an A-lister anymore, but it is respected as a veteran product which opened a new world for AAPL. And it still sells.

Apple v MySpace and Facebook

Apple's new social network for music *as Steve Jobs called it several times* is not just what it says. It is a starting point.

Think about how Apple gets into any new industry. It puts together a simple concept. tests it and makes it popular, then extends it incrementally. This is why I still believe the Apple TV will one day run apps, and also why I believe Apple's taking a new initiative to get into social networking. Particularly now it has iAds and valuable location-based data to use, and is developing understanding of the value of that.

This is a nice and simple beginning. Can't wait to see the Lady GaGa ad for it at some point in future.

Baffle 'em with B.S.

Apple always offers up a few interesting statistics at the beginning of these events. Many of us Mac scribblers gloss over these while we wait for the meat. It is only weeks later that we find we need them and no one has written them down. Here's what we learned in the first few minutes:

Apple retail

- Apple has 300 stores, Covent Garden, London was its 300th store
- Over a million people visit these retail stores some days in every month.
- Apple runs 80,000 one-on-one sessions per week in stores iOS 4
- iOS 4.1 update fixes the Proximity bug
- 120 million iOS devices have shipped since one year ago that's 230,000 iOS devices per day.
- 25,000 iPad apps
- HDR photos are based on algorithmic treatment taken from three images, it pulls out enhanced detail by doing this.
- iOS 4.1 is for iPhone and the iPod touch. Available next week.
- iOS 4.2 comes a little later this year Apple has sold 275 million iPods since 2001. (iPhone is already catching up. I'm sure it must be time for one of those info-graphics, but that's beyond the call at midnight).

I'm sure some of these notes will help somebody. On a lean day, some of these are stories in themselves. (Incidentally, in previous years Apple has hosted a nice little party for Europe's tech hacks. This year it didn't that's fine, but it underlines the new austere age we're in. Sigh).

Some notes:
- iTunes 10 is live.

- iPod Classic is dead. RIP. It is all streaming anymore anyway. Update: Maybe not. Still, no mention at the event doesn't bode well long term. Think more like we made enough to last a few more months.

- iPod nano is hella small but also loses the camera which was nice on a device that small. Even Steve said people would wear them as a watch, so I get a star. Speaking of Stars, holy cow! Mr. Nano mockup gets a galaxy of stars.

- AppleTV is awesome but maybe the coolest part is the Airport Express Video functionality. Carrying around media on iPads, iPhones and iPods, it will be pretty cool to be able to shoot that right over to the TV.

Renting movies and TV shows does two things. It makes cable obsolete. It also means that TV shows now are a buck a pop or more. If you watch 10 shows (Fox and ABC) a week, that is $40. Not a bad tradeoff at that frequency. $4.99 for first run movies is also OK, but I still like buying BlueRay for the good stuff. Also, what hardware/OS is AppleTV running? At that size, it is a variant of iOS on A4 most likely. At $99, this will no longer be a hobby.

2. Cable is most certainly not obsolete. Several folks in a household and several TVs and its most certainly not going to be 10 shows a week, more like 10 per person. Also my cable includes several movie channels ALSO I can DVR and watch anything , anytime I want, no 48 hour restriction My Cable gives me over 200 channel choices, DVR , several movie channels on a unlimited number of TVs all for less than $100 per month. Apple TV is sorta neat but its certainly not going to replace Cable…(Oh and what about local programming, local news??????)

iTunes 10 is for iOS 4.1, iOS 4.2 (iPad/November), new "Ping" social network, fixes to lots of problems and probably code for ATV but it is out now and installed on all machines and finally fixed the problem of my iPhone taking forever to sync.

My husband has a 3GS and it has been upgraded to the lated OS. Yesterday he tried to open the Ipod on his iphone and it opened for a second and then closed. He turned the phone off for 5 minutes and then turned back on and still no luck with Ipod. Any suggestions?

That is what I was going to say plus unsync all the music and launch the iPod. See if he can and if not it might be time for a restore.

Issues with OS 3.4 ????

Has anyone else experienced any issues after upgrading to the newest OS 3.4 ?

Mine went smooth and everything worked fine. Then all of a sudden EVERY 3rd party app would not work. All the Apple apps that came with the iPhone still worked, email and the web.

Then ALL my songs and videos would not show up. They were listed as using space under the settings though.

I did a sync and that fixed everything. It was strange as everything worked fine at first.

I have not experienced this so far. The apps that would not run under 3.0B3 still won't run under 3.0B4. The apps that don't run properly are the ones I use the most. Just my luck!

That's my luck too. So, I am not wasting my time running the betas
anymore.

I'll just wait until the public release of 3.0 is ready.

So far, I'm not having any difficulties. Same apps work for me as with beta 3, same apps that didn't with beta 3, don't on beta 4. Solitaire City Lite (one of my favs) started working with beta 3 and continues to work. My kid's favorite, "Jelly Car" works great too.
