1. In iTunes, when your iPhone is connected, at the bottom of the Summary screen, be sure "Encrypt iPhone Backup" is < checked >.
2. Setup a VPN (I like Hotspot Shield for iPhone). And activate it whenever you use an unsecured Wifi hotspot.
However, note that it is impossible to encrypt the actual iPhone itself, which is the only 100% secure method for securing your iPhone.
-----How are you defining security? Because like mentioned before the iPhone can't be completely secured. You can encrypt your backups from prying eyes and you can use encrypted password applications but the phone is still unencrypted even if you have a passcode lock. If someone has a phone phone extraction device like the Cellbrite UFED they can grab your data rather quickly.
