Fancy that! This little guy is said to provide up to six extra hours of 3G talk time, 36 hours of bonus audio playback or nine hours of video playback. It's shipping now, just like we said, to those willing to part ways with $79.95, and it's available in any color you want, so long as it's black.

The battery life on the Iphone is great. I don't have to charge it nearly as often as I did my 3gs. I just like knowing I have the extra battery if I need it and the Mophie product is an excellent accessory to have around.

I have never gone thru a full charge on my iPhone 4 in a single day (unplug before I leave home and have 25-60% left when I get home). But not having to remember to charge every day, preserving charge cycles, and having a fairly protective case all in one is worth it. Since $29 apple case was refunded I look Mophie only costing $50

Mine is plugged in, charging, overnight, but in addition, may sit in a charge in the car if my errands are longer.

With regard to that, the case I am using at present, and likely to continue using, is the InCase version provided by the "Apple Bumper Program", and it is the ONLY case I have found to date with which I can STILL place the iPhone 4, IN its case, into the TomTom Car Kit dashboard mount.

Place a small piece of corrugated cardboard between the case and the back of the kit, at the bottom, and the power switch is triggered, so the kit's features all works as they did with the 3G.

I can't believe I'm buying another one but they are just great! Now I'll really be set if I'm traveling or what-not. I like it that this model uses the juicepack before the Iphone battery and that it turns itself off if not being used.

I found as I also have an iPad, I barely use the iPhone 4 at all.

If I do need to worry about batteries, I have the FastMac IV case was for 3G/3GS and a naked iPhone 4 fits beautifully in there.

OK, It is not an attractive case, but you can't argue 'if it ain't broke...'

It is good to run with it. It is not as bulky as you might think. I did back to back marathon and a half. It is good to have your phone with you on training runs. You never know you might need it.

I also ran with it [only a 5 k..but still...]...my only issue is getting a good arm band...but it wasn't uncomfortable ...

I wear an armpocket (www.armpocket.com) when I go walk/running. I try to go 3 times a week and I do about 6 to 10 miles each time and I have to have something which keeps my key, my identification, a small snack (I'm diabetic) and my phone. Its a bit bulkier than most because I carry so much with me, but it fits around my arm securely with NO slippage. My phone is still functional in the band, there is a slot at the top for the headset (but I tend to go walking with my jawbone icon). When I tire of it, I just put it in the zip pocket.


I just don't want to pay for the Nike+ with GPS unit when the Nike+ app came with my phone and I did invest in the shoe fob.

Well... On my first 5K test GPS didn't work. I usually use NewBalance app that uploads runs to mapmyrun. NB has GPS as well. Very similar to Nike app. The best part of the app is Free.

I'll start over. Nike released a new Nike + app for $1.99 that uses the phones GPS, Accelerometer, etc instead of the chip in the shoe and the built in Nike+ App, so if you no longer want to use the shoes, shoe chip, or never bought them in the first place you can buy the $1.99 new App and use it instead of the built in App.

From what I've heard Apple will exchange your broken iPhone for a unbroken iPhone for around $100.00 at most Apple stores. My son was able to exchange his at the Apple store in Sacramento, Ca.

Apple will repair your iPhone, for the same $100.00.

Live with it.

And - after the repair or replacement - seriously consider insurance.

Some *house* contents insurance policies cover phones, ipods, etc., when away from home. Ours even covers our bicycles. I don't think this cost any extra

Bug Fixes:
As promised, Apple will be providing fixes for the three major well-known issues in iOS 4.0/4.01/4.02. The first, which for me is worse than the antenna issue, deals with the iPhone 4′s proximity sensor issues. Many users find they are accidentally inputing commands into the iPhones screen while on a phone call. 4.1 promises to rectify this issue.

The update also promises a fix for bluetooth connection issues as well as a bug that makes the iPhone 3G very sluggish while running iOS 4.0.Initial tests conclude that the update lives up to its word, especiallyin the Google Maps and Messages applications.

Enhanced Bluetooth audio playback:
As we reported back in mid-July, iOS 4.1 brings full AVRCP bluetooth playback. This enhanced bluetooth protocol allows for more audio controls via bluetooth such as skipping forward, back, and volume.

Before iOS 4.1 only volume controls were supported by bluetooth car stereo systems and such.

Game Center:
Game Center is Apple's social gaming network that brings players of similar skill sets together in multiplayer games. The service initially introduced in April of this year is now ready for primetime with a slew of supported games ready to launch.

HD Video Uploading:
A long requested feature is finally available on iOS 4.1 and that is the ability to upload HD videos directly from your iPhone 4 or 4th generation iPod touch. Though the feature only works on WiFi, it is better than having to sync to your computer in order to upload.

High Dynamic Range Photography (HDR):
One new feature that nobody really saw coming in iOS 4.1 was HDR. This photo mechanism snaps three stills and combines them to create the perfect photo depending on lighting, shadows, and other photo-altering elements. To enable HDR just click the HDR button on top of the Camera apps' interface. You can choose whether the camera will save just the HDR version of the photo or the standard version as well. FaceTime in Phone Favorites:
A new handy feature that Apple added to iOS 4.1 was the addition of FaceTime in phone favorites. You can now easily add FaceTime numbers and e-mail address to the favorites bar for quick access to you pal's faces.

As you know the new iPod touch has FaceTime, yet they obviously don't carry phone numbers. Because of this, Apple turned to E-Mail addresses as the point of FaceTime connection for their new iPod touch. Below is the interface for sending a FaceTime request to an E-Mail address.

Landscape Camera and FaceTime Call Controls:
Apple tends to port some of their portrait features to the landscape orientation from time-to-time and in iOS 4.1 they made FaceTime controls as well as the controls in the camera app easier to navigate in landscape.

$.99 TV Show Rentals in iTunes:
As you may know, Apple announced 99 cent TV show rentals for the United States in iTunes, and renting from your iOS device will be a go. Simply head to the TV Show section, then to your favorite show, then double click on an individual episode. From there you can now choose to own it, or rent it for 48 hours (you must watch it within 30 days) for less than a buck.

Ping support in iTunes:
Apple's newly announced music social network will be making its way to the mobile iTunes, but doesn't lose a beat. You can follow (stalk), comment, and read up your feed.

Disable Spell Check:
Here is another handy addition from Apple in iOS 4.1. For those who don't like Apple's spell check (this is different than auto-correction) you can disable it under Settings/General/Keyboard.

FaceTime and Multiplayer/Game Center Restrictions:
This one's for all the awesome parents out there. You can place restrictions on your kid's iOS device so they can't FaceTime or play games with people over the internet. Simply go to the restrictions menu, set a password, and disable them like you see below.

AT&T Carrier settings shift to version 8.0:
iOS 4.1 now includes an updated version of the AT&T (not sure about other carriers) carrier firmware. This may or may not improve cellular service, data connections, and text message sending, but at least they're trying.

3G ringer

Need help for 3G ringer sound, Does not work for incoming calls even set from sound options. 2nd problem does not charge even after 24hrs but shows the charging signs always. I am new and do not have technical background.

Also make sure the ringer switch (top left corner of device) hadn't got turned off accidently. I did this once and it had me confused for a day or so. The switch should be up.

Contacts syncing

iTunes will sync with Windows Address Book -- but WAB isn't used anymore with Windows Live Mail (desktop), there's a different contacts arrangement there. Any ideas on what I could do so I could have a contacts list on my pc that would sync with iP* contacts?

I do *not* want to have to go to the cloud for this!

I'd hoped that v10 would have updated this as well, since WAB & Outlook Express hasn't been supported for a while now, but no go. I'm not even using WAB anymore as I've moved on from OE.

I also don't want to have to get something like Outlook just for this.
Apple obviously knows about MS contact programs -- why haven't they realized that lots of us are now using WLM with its contacts list rather than OE/WAB?

It is an annoyance to have to enter everything on my phone as well as in my WLM contacts. I'd hoped to be able to use just a subset/category (group) as you can with the WAB. I guess I'll have to resurrect the WAB & see how it works "on its own". iTunes sync *seems* to be updating the WAB with what I've entered on the phone. But that would still leave me doing double entry -- WAB/phone as well as WLM contacts for anything new -- although at least the amount of info I want to carry around is somewhat limited.

Have her turn off threading in the Mail settings on the iPhone and the sender, subject and content will appear. She can ten read and delete them.

It has to do with how the iOS 4 handles threading, if someone take an old post and changes the subject line, rather than start a new email. Mail in iOS 4 reads the long headers, not the subject line to group the threads.

I don't know that it has to do anything with the Yahoo servers, but the ones I get do seem to all be from Yahoo groups.

I saw a customer's Otterbox Defender which DOES have a holster.

Usually, the 'peeling' happens when one is using hand sanitizers a lot. If you use the sanitizer... make sure your hands are dry before holding your case.

Some network operators have that feature but you have to have the other phone owner's approval. My mom used to have that on me when I was younger.

But I think you can track your own iPhone's location though if you lost it via mobileme if I'm not mistaken.

Windows phones have that feature too via myphone.

If you are wanting to find out the approximate location of your callers, there are two apps that may help you. First is "MapitAreaCD", this will give you the geographical area that an area code covers. Second in "White Pages", it has a reverse number look up that normally gives you the area that a phone number is issued from, as well as complete owner info for land lines if not blocked. Of course if you are trying to "track" mobile numbers, all bets are off.

My iphone3G was abysmally slow after I upgraded to firmware 4. I had not set it up as "new" when I first downloaded the software( ignoring the advice of many on the list). Since then i freted and fumed. Finally today I bit the bullet and "restored" and "set it as new".Well I lost the data in many apps :-(. But suddenly its no longer slow. Its as good as it was when on 3.0.

I think you should be able to do so, considering I had my iPhone unlocked by my service provider which is o2 (uk) and this was done while my contract is still running and not running out until December.

Also, I don't know of any uk provider that unlocks your iPhone for you apart from o2 in the uk.

Has anyone had success with using a USB cable to transfer pictures from Your iPhone 4 to a photo machine at say Wal-Mart.

I receive some great pic on my iPhone I would like to have printed. I usually have to go home and down Load the pix from my Desktop to a USB memory chip and then go back To Wal-Mart to get them printed !

Unless a new feature of iOS4 is the ability to use it as a flash drive, then this is probably not possible natively. I know there are apps that let you kinda-sorta do that via WiFi, maybe by now there's one that works via USB? But if there is, its data store is likely segregated away from the device's main storage.

When you plug an iPhone (and assuming the upcoming iPod touch) into any computer it identifies itself just like a digital camera does, it works fine when I plug it into my DVD player (which supports Digital Camera (DCIM) photo playback) so it should .

It mounts as a camera and you can get to pics in the Camera Roll. At least pre-Win7. It may work on Win7, but I've only got one Win7 machine to test with and it doesn't work. Worked great on my WinXP machine though.

For the past week I have been getting the same error message. It looks like it syncs ok but it can't create a backup. The error message is: "ITunes could not back up the Iphone....because a session could not be started with the IPhone."

I have a 3G with OS 4.0.2 but the problem started while I had the previous OS.

I had gotten this message a couple of times when I had a lot of trouble properly syncing. I would get a lot of freezes(due to my antivirus and firewall programs). What used to work for me was deleting the old backup (or cutting and pasting it somewhere else just in case) and then syncing. A new backup will be made. My firewall was somehow corrupting a file or two in the backup so it couldn't be written over.

Your backup ( if using windows vista or 7) is in user/app data/ roaming/ apple
computer/ mobilesync/ backup.

Also I forgot - try completely rebooting your phone by holding the home button and power button down until the apple logo shows. It frees up memory and resets things. ( without resetting any of your personal settings).

iTunes 10 no longer has the tool that lets users create custom ringtones. Can't say we are very disappointed. The tool wasn't all the great, it cost 99-cents a ringtone and it seemed to have far too many limitations. Well, we are being nice...it stank.

Whatever their reasons, whether it was actually because the software was very limited, or because of some other idea from Cupertino, it's gone. Luckily, there is no need to worry, friends.

We have a far better solution. It's free, it lets you convert just about any file you want (even YouTube videos) into a ringtone. No software to install---it's all browser-based.

We go with Audiko, which we've written about several times in the past. So far, it's the best tool we've found for creating custom ringtones for the iPhone.

We even have a tutorial that tells you exactly how to create your own ringtones on the website.

The simplest iTunes method of creating ringtones from your ripped music, as described by some websites for several years, still works with iTunes 10.

1. If you don't use the default import encoder, change Preferences > General > Import Settings > Import Using to AAC Encoder.

2. Choose your track and play it to decide the start and stop times. The duration can be anything up to 40 seconds.

3. Right-click > Get Info > Options to change the Start and Stop times to what you decided in (2). You can be precise to 0.001 secs if you want. Play this to make sure you've got what you want.

4. Right-click > Create AAC Version. This creates an edited version containing only what's between the Start and Stop times.

5. Right-click > Get Info > Summary to find the location of the edited version (not really necessary as it will be exactly adjacent to the original track in the iTunes Media > Music > Artist > Album folder).

6. Delete the edited version from iTunes but keep the file.

7. Navigate to the file using Finder or Windows Explorer and change the filename extension from m4a to m4r.

8. Either double-click the m4r file or iTunes > File > Add to Library to add it back to iTunes. It will go into Ringtones, not Music, and the file will move to the Ringtones folder.

9. Get Info > Options on the original track to change the Start and Stop times back to the defaults. You can do this at any point after (4).

10. Repeat 2-9 for your other ringtones.

11. Sync the phone to transfer your ringtones.

12. If you don't use the default import encoder, change Preferences > General > Import Settings > Import Using back to your usual one.

That looks like a lot of steps but it is really easy.

I've been using iPhoneRing ToneMaker. It's works. It's easy. It runs on my Win7 Professional laptop. I think it was free, but don't really remember.

It makes the ringtone from any music file and then loads it into iTunes.

My husband wants as little WiFi as possible, and prefers a hardwired router to minimize EMF exposure. I want WiFi for the iPhone. Is there a way to get the WiFi for the iPhone while still using the hardwired router for our computer network?

Is there a router that has the option of hardwire + WiFi and the ability to switch between the two, so that I could turn the WiFi on and off at will?

All modern wifi routers include a (wired) ethernet switch *as well as* a wifi base station. You can switch off the wifi when not required but it might be tedious. Are you prepared to go into the router's admin, using a computer connected via ethernet, *every* time you want to use the iPhone, then again when you stop using it?

Sorry I'm chiming in late here. Since the Mac isn't using its airport to receive wifi, you could have it send a wifi signal that your iPhone can pick up. Then it would be easier to turn Airport off and on in the Menu Bar. You already have everything you need to try it.

That turns off the WiFi unit in the Mac, not the WiFi base station. Her husband want to minimize RF radiation (transmission), and wants to turn off the base station when not used.

I agree that the amount of RF radiation is negligible, but I'm not the one that needs to be convinced.

YEs. The Airports, and most WLAN routers from Cisco, Linsys, Netgear, etc, do both WiFi and wired LAN.

Not as a simple switch option. Some may have a control to turn the WiFi on/off, but it would be really annoying to have to go into the config of the router every single time.

Your husband is being paranoid. The RF output is too low to be of a concern, unless he's going to mount it on his head and leave it there for years on end.

Yes, most WiFi routers have one or more ethernet (rj-45) sockets. You can plug in as many direct connected devices as there are sockets (many have 4) and have multiple WiFi devices (or just one) at the same time.

Depending on what 'at will' means, yes you can turn the WiFi on and off. It's probably not one click, at least not on the three or four WiFi routers I've worked with. But at most a few clicks, to turn off wifi (while continuing wired connections.)

I'm a recent convert to iPhone, and not necessarily in the know yet about the common complaints so apologies if this topic/question has been beaten to death already.

I'm disappointed in the quality of the sound when playing music. The iPod function doesn't sound anywhere approaching as good as my iPod classic, which blew me away when I first got it. Then today I tried listening to a streaming radio station and the quality is so poor it puts me in mind of the (really) old days of the tinny single speaker clock radios of my youth.

Am I expecting too much? Is there a setting on the device that will improve the sound quality? I've messed with the equalizer but that doesn't seem to affect the sound quality in the least. Is my experience simply a function of the media form?

I'm using an iPhone 4 through the tape deck of the JBL sound system of my car. The comparison to the iPod classic is made using the same equipment.

You know that was also my problem while ago, as i am always after to the quality of sound, well... good thing i find it that could lessen my disappointments...

On your "HOme" screen, go to "Setting icon" expand it, and go to "EQ" from that, select your type of sounds... i prefer "R & B" for my listening type. Hope this will help you somehow...

My old iPhone 3G sounded about as good to me as my iPod Classic does. Trick one is to use good earbuds, and not the crap that comes with.

Unless things have changed in iPhone 4 compared to 3G, the phone part does not route out through the Dock. If she's using a BT solution, that won't matter. But if she's using a phone adapter cord between the iPhone and the car interface it does.

For the record, I ran my iPhone 3G through a Shure phone-adapter cord to an extension and then into an add-on AUX input to the car factory stereo and got quite acceptable audio results. I did not notice any change in quality when I switched back to my iPod Classic and ran the audio out through the dock connector to the same AUX input. (I'll see if there is any noticeable difference with the iPod Touch I'm about to get.)

My car isn't as quite on the inside as it used to be, but it has a very good (Bose) stereo.

After reading this thread on sound quality, I went to my car, hooked up my iPhone 4 via cassette player to cars speakers and started playing some music. I have to say the sound quality really is bad. I tried fiddling with the EQ on my iPhones settings and it made absolutely NO DIFFERENCE which preset I choose.

Does anyone else have this problem? If I choose heavy bass, it sounds the same as reduced bass or classical or R&B,etc... I'm wondering If one of the software updates actually messed up the iPhone's EQ. Someone else please try it and let me know if they can hear a difference among the different eq presets.
