Oily on the bottom

Apple iPhone - oily on the bottom

I fell in love with the iPhone from the moment I saw the first ad. Although there have been minor issues, my iPhone has been my lifeline. I'm a professional petsitter and it has made running my business so much easier.

Today I sat my iPhone on a shelf of my computer desk while I took care of some things. When I finished and picked it back up, I noticed it felt oily on the bottom. Further investigation found a bottle of incense solvent (a oil used to cut fragrance oils) had been left on the next shelf up and had developed a leak...right onto the phone below. I've had it laying so it could drain, but the screen is now very difficult to read. I don't know how, if at all, this will affect the iPhone other than making it hard to see what's on the screen. I synced right away to make sure everything is backed up off it just in case. It doesn't seem to be draining any more, but I'm afraid it's totally ruined. You can see air bubbles under the glass. I'm so not happy with myself.

iPhone Warranty
oily apple iphone oily
This will be likely impossible to clear up because it is an oil substance. It's doubtful that Apple will replace it.

Your best bet is to buy a new iPhone.

-----
The visibility is getting worse. I can't afford to buy a new phone right now. I'm thinking I'll go back to my old iPhone until I can afford to get a new one. Luckily I still have every cell phone I've ever owned. Someday I will mount them in a shadow box.

I just put the SIM card back in the old one, right?

-----
It's my understanding you can exchange a "bad" iPhone for a "good" iPhone of the same version for just $100.00. My son exchanged an iPhone 4 with broken glass for just $100.00 at the local Apple store.

-----
They are going a few "extra miles" on iPhone 4 breaks than they have in the past, at least that I have read and seen - a LOT of people have posted here and other places that they walked in with broken glass (front or back) and it was either repaired or replaced at no charge or for $100, typically it is $199 for the front and on iPhone 4, I think the official price for the back was $99 (front contains touch interface and glass).

-----
It's not a 'bad' iPhone. Oil was spilled on it. My fault. The iPhone that got 'oiled' was the upgrade I got last year. The iPhone I'm going back to temporarily is an original iPhone. The SIM is from it originally.

----
I know the oil is your fault, that's my point. Since it's not under warranty that's why the $100.00 exchange "fee". Call your local Apple store. My son broke his glass so his was his fault too but he was able to exchange it For the fee.

-----
I would take it into an Apple store and tell them what happened and ask them if they can help you. Honesty with them is the best way to approach them in this case.

If you have a iPhone 4, you have a micro SIM card, the original had a regular SIM card. You will need to get a new SIM card to fit the old phone, if Apple is not feeling generous.

-----
Last time I used AT&T, SIM cards were physically interchangeable, that is the entire point of them. How will it not fit?

-----
The iPhone 4 uses a microSIM. The older ones used miniSIM.

-----
I did not know that, I thought they were always that size.

-----
I assume you've checked to see if it's covered by your house contents insurance?

BTW what's a "shadow box"?

New iPhone, what to do?

Apple iPhone - New
When you get a new iPhone4, do you have to always
1. Put in a SIM, even if you want to use only Wi-fi
2. Register in itunes even if you do not intend using Appstore.

If yes then why?

New iPhone
New Gelaskins apple iphone
If you buy from a carrier the answer is yes to both.

But not if you buy without contract.

-----
You still have to use iTunes to activate it even if it is carrier unlocked or bought from Apple or via web site - every apple product does, even the WiFi iPad has to be activated in iTunes just the way Apple requires registration of the devices...

PUSH one Code

Apple iPhone - PUSH one Code

New here...not even sure if it is kewl to do this but here goes, some shameless self promotion!

Yesterday my App was submitted to the iTunes store. It is called PUSH one Code. It is a cool new way to use your Smartphone. A GPS function brings up your area codes and you just push one Code and add the last digits.

iPhone App

There is more, all State codes, Intl country codes, save you favorite codes etc plus updates already on the drawing board.

Figured I wasn't the only one that hated dialing area codes over and over again, so I made an App for that!

Repeating Address

Apple iPhone - Repeating Address

I have had trouble with the IPhone4 adding the same addresses to my list. I get up to 5-6 and delete them down to one and within a day are two The addresses repeat again. Today I have as many as five addresses for each person!

Iphone Syncing
Apple iphone syncing
Sync with either MobileMe or iTunes, but not both.

-----
Hmmm?...now that is interesting. I am having all kinds of problems with MobileMe creating duplicate events/appt's so I wonder if eliminating the syncing of iTunes will resolve the problem.

In iTunes, under Edit/Preferences/Devices, is that where I can temporarily stop iTunes from syncing...and just have MobileMe sync, or is there another menu somewhere that I should look at?

-----
Yes - you don't sync with iTunes AND MobileMe or for that matter MobileMe and anything else if it is the same data. For example if you are syncing MobileMe for Contacts on iPhone and Mac (or iPhone and PC) you don't also sync with Google on the PC if they are the same contacts or it will be duplicated Google will sync with computer and computer will sync with MobileMe copying everything there back and forth (same thing with Calendars). I use both but for different data, Google / GMail is business and MobileMe is personal so there is no duplication and both are isolated from each other on computers and on the phone show up either all together or if selected from the menu, either or any combination of them.

-----
I understand all that - but how does one fix it?

I made that mistake over a year ago, and I've been battling it ever since!

I now have up to 45,000 contacts in outlook which I can easy pare down to 2-3,000 and delete deleted items.

But last time I synced, even telling iTunes to replace contacts on the phone with outlook contacts, I'm up to 140,000 on the phone and 45,000 in Outlook again.

I have purchased a couple iTunes apps to eliminate duplicates, but they crash above 30,000 and I have run scanpst on my outlook file.

Is the solution to empty the contacts on the phone completely? If so, how does one do that?

Im driving 100 miles to the apple store next weekend to see if they will replace me cracked front glass on my 4 - do they have tools that can fix they contact problem?

-----
If they give you a new phone, just start fresh on the phone and only sync through OTA (Over the Air) services. I can't really help with Outlook (haven't used it since I was betaed into Gmail nearly 10 years ago) - I can tell you that when I made the mistake of adding 'contacts' on new Mac Mini to MobileMe and I ended up with MobileMes contacts in Gmail and Gmails contacts in MobileMe - First I turned off on Mini then I turned off both on the phone (was prompted to remove or keep contacts, I selected remove) then I logged into MobileMe and deleted all the GMail contacts then logged into GMail and deleted the MMe contacts but I didn't have 140k and 45k, I had 2k in GMail and about 200 in MobileMe...

-----
These are my instructions to myself when I have duplicate iCal events, which I learned here. I think you can do the same thing for your Contacts problems.

Removing Double Calendar Entries

1. Go to iPhone Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars

2. under Accounts click on your MobileMe account. Then you should have Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Bookmarks, and Find My iPhone all with On/Off toggles.

3. Toggle calendar off. It will then give you an option to "keep on my iphone", "delete from iphone" or "cancel". Choose “Delete.”

4. Then toggle Calendar back on and let it resync to MobileMe.

(Mashable) Stuart Hughes, the British jeweler known for his expensive remakes of popular gadgets, is at it again, this time with a diamond-clad iPhone 4 with a price tag of 5 million pounds, or roughly $8 million.

The handmade bezel contains approximately 500 individual flawless diamonds that total more than 100 carats.

There's 53 additional diamonds in the back, and the main navigation button is made of platinum, holding a single cut 7.4 carat pink diamond.

If you know diamonds, all of this probably means something to you. To us, it just sounds really, really expensive.

Only two of these will ever be made, so don't worry: if you buy one, the chances of bumping into someone who has the exact same phone at a party are quite slim.

Ipad Options

Apple iPhone - Ipad Options

I have a few questions regarding the Apple iPad after hearing that a few people in the group (probably more than a few), bought it when it came out. Last year for Christmas I bought my husband a Kindle thinking since he is an avid reader that he would really enjoy it. He is not that crazy about it at all, so it just lays around unused most of the time. He says he would rather have a real book in his hands for some reason. I am going to see if I can possibly sell it on EBay or something. I have too many gadgets of my own right now to start using it myself. My main love of course is my iPhone. Anyway, I am seriously thinking of getting him an iPad for Christmas this year. I think he would get much more use out of it since he fell in love with my 3GS that I handed down to him when I got the iPhone 4. What I am wondering is if I should get the one without the 3G. I really don't think he would be taking it out of the house that much. But, I was also thinking that if he was to travel he might want that ability.

For someone that is not constantly on the computer, would the model with only wi-fi suffice?

And, do you think that tethering is ever going to come to the iPhone so that the 3G could be used on the iPad that way?

I want to make sure that I get the right model and don't end up wishing I had spent the money on the more expensive one.

iPhone iPad
Options for Apple iPhone iPad

Honestly at this point, 1. I would wait to see what is announced at the press conference on Wednesday,

2. new iPads will likely be announced if not come out in Jan/Feb but other than that the WiFi model has been fine for me since they came out. I have an iPhone (as it sounds like both of you do) for GPS & 3G data needs on the go and if I really need it my Verizon Droid can be a WiFi hot spot but other than testing it twice (when I got it and after an upgrade) I have never used it. My iPad goes with me every day but I rarely use it because I am generally in front of a computer unless I am in the car and then if necessary use the phone, it is mainly used at home for videos, reading, etc.

-----
Would add to the "wait for the new model", consider buying from Verizon and get the MiFi package. A brief look indicated the MiFi would add $30 to the price of an iPad and then you have the option of a non contract data plan for $50 a month/5GB. The Mifi can be used with up to 5 computers like a Touch, netbook. Currently the Verizon MiFi is free if you buy online, but the contract is 2 years at $59 a month.

But if your husband doesn't like reading on the Kindle, doubt he will like the iPad for reading either. I keep books on the Touch or iPad for waiting inline, appointments, but if I want to "read" a book, I want paper.

-----
I also thought I do not need the 3G on the iPad.
Trust me, I sooooo regret I only got the WiFi-only model.

Unless you live in a city where free wifi is everywhere.

-----
So glad I have the wifi+3G model, I'm in new York city and wireless access is by no means universal.

Did you hear that Verizon's going to be selling the iPad in 2 weeks.

Logmein vs. RDM+

Has any one used both of these apps? I'm using RDM+ for both the iPhone and the iPad. While it works, it's not that smooth. I was wondering if Logmein works easier.

Signal boosters / Repeater ?

Apple iPhone - Signal boosters / Repeater ?

Has anybody experimented with using a signal booster / repeater / bi-amp / directional antenna(s) for the iPhone 4 on AT&T.

Doesn't matter if the phone is in the carry case, pocket, or how I hold it, most of the time it reports NO SERVICE, occasionally it will get enough service to ring but can't conduct a call until I go outside and find a sweet spot.

While their online coverage maps claim to have average signal strength at my work place, the iphone 4 reports "NO SERVICE". Several other AT&T users have the same/simular results, having to go outside and search for the signal to use the phone. Verison & Sprint also claim decent coverage there but it isn't true either. The only thing that works there is Nextel because we have a Nextel site on the property, oh it would be nice to have the iphone on Nextel.

I doubt AT&T will resolve the coverage any time soon so I'm looking for alternative solutions.

iPhone BoosterBooster for apple iphone What prevents anyone from buying unlocked iPhone 4 and using Nextel voice and data connection?

-----
T-Mobile and Cingular use GSM, while Sprint and Verizon Wireless use CDMA. Nextel uses another technology called iDEN,

-----
Are you talking about lack of signal strength at your home?

I bought an AT&T microcell last summer and have been really happy with it. I could only get 1 bar or nothing, usually, at my house. Now I have 5 bars constantly and never have a dropped call here.

They gave me a $100 rebate which I used to pay down my bill, so the microcell cost $100 less than the advertised price. Don't know whether the rebate is still available, though.

-----
I looked at that in the store when I got the phone, seems to me it requires an internet connection and they still charge you minutes & or data when you use it and yet you have to supply the internet to it.

http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/why/3gmicrocell/

Also calls will not transfer to it, you can start calls on it and transfer to a cell tower but not from cell tower to it. It obviously has some limitations and you don't get any cost savings using it.

Since this is at my work place, connecting to the company network is not allowed so this is not an option.

-----
Yes, you're correct about all those things. You can pay a $20 monthly fee for a plan that puts all the minutes you use onto it, but I cancelled that because I don't use all my minutes ever anyway. And it bugged me that I had to pay to get a decent signal when I feel that AT&T should be providing that as part of the service I pay for.

But after years of never having a good signal at home, when they offered the $100 rebate I bought it and I'm not sorry.

At your office, though, this clearly isn't an option.

-----
I agree, they should be providing a good signal as part of the package. I've never used my minutes either, of course its hard to without a signal. Its nice that the microcell works for you.

-----
You folks keep talking about that rebate but you never mention that the rebate
is only if you sighn up for the unlimited minutes plan!! Visit AT&T for all the
real information.

-----
Yes, I did sign up for the unlimited minutes plan, but the guy who sold it to me told me that I could just keep it for a month and then cancel and still get the rebate, so that's what I did, and the rebate came. So it cost me $20 but I still got the $80 back. He even implied that I could cancel before a month was over but I was slow and didn't get around to it!

Probably not every salesperson would admit that, but mine did!

-----
If you know how to make yagi or log periodic antennas - there is the old passive reflector trick. You use two antennas, point one at the cell tower, hook it up to the second antenna and point it into your house. It worked for people in a valley behind a mountain from TV stations, they would get together and place two antennas on top of the mountain and bounce signals into the valley for everybody. No reason why it shouldn't work for cell signals, too. There are a lot of antenna design calculators on the web, materials would be really cheap, antennas really small at 2.4GHz.

I'm about to do it, because my house is a new subdivision pretty far from the cell tower, my daughter complains of dead zones in her room. When I get it working, I suppose I could post a web site with construction details.

-----
It might work in some applications. Making antennas is not a problem, a piece of wood or PVC or Plastic and some coat hanger wire to make a beam is fine.

You might also just look at wilson electronics for their amps and antennas.

-----
where you speaking of home or work?

If work, does your building have a metal roof? If so the answer would be repeaters with an antenna outside. You should be able to find them for about $400 each, but you will need one for GSM and one for CDMA. If it is a warehouse with steel racking you may need more.

Nothing will help for steel roofing except a repeater. There is nothing the service provider can do to penetrate metal. If you have a stucco house, the wire mesh used to hold the stucco to the walls can act as a Faraday cage and cause the same problem.

-----
Work place its big, several buildings, big company.

Nextel works fine there, have a tower on the property, would be nice if AT&T did also.
My chances of getting the company to do repeaters is most likely slimmer than slim to none.

-----
http://www.wilsonelectronics.com/

-----
I have had some good experience with some BDA (Bi-Directional Amplifier) but unfortunately they were for Nextels. However the principle is the same.

CSI - Cellular Specialties Inc do a google search for them. I am not 100% sure if they have one for GSM / EDGE / UMTS but its worth a look.

The other good thing is this would provide wide area in building coverage for all employees on the network,

Our BDA in the building for Nextel also enhanced other 800mhz freqs so when ever local Police or Fire guys came in for service their 800 portables worked great. LOL but that's another story..

Just make sure its professionally installed and the carrier is notified. The newer BDA units are self regulating to make sure there is no system interference. But they do work.

Mophie

Apple iPhone - Mophie

Well I've owned my Mophie for the iPhone 4 now for 2 weeks.

It works well but I can not understand why when the phones battery is charged to 100% with the Mophie why it doesn't last as long as when The phone is charged to 100% with power adapter.

It almost seems like it lasts just half as long.

If I charge my phone with the Mophie my phone won't last as long as it does if I charge it with a power cord ..

iPhone Mophie
Apple iPhone Mophie
I'm not following you, how does the phone last less with a battery on it than without a battery on it? Unless you mean you are using the Mophie to charge the phone. Technically, there are 3 ways to use it (or any battery case).

1 (what I do) Start day with both fully charged, have Mophie turned on (switch to screen) so that iPhone stays at 100% and has the plugged in/fully charged logo and you are using Mophie power - this lasts me all day (I get at least 12 hours if not longer) and my Mophie still has 1 or 2 lights and iPhone never gets used - heavier use will use more power and the Mophie might get used up and then you will start using iPhone's internal battery (power plug icon will go away and 100% will go down as you use it.

2. (most instructions) - Mophie fully charged, iPhone at 100% or less and you use your iPhone until you get to 20% or less then you switch Mophie on and it charges iPhone back up and while it is charging the internal battery you are also pulling power using the phone so even though it is 1500mAh it might not last as long since it is powering the phone and charging the battery

3 (combination) - leave the Mophie turned off when phone is locked/asleep so it is not being used and when you use phone turn Mophie on so that you keep internal battery charged and draw power from Mophie for use.

or I guess a 4th, which is to use the phone until it is completely dead then put (or turn) the Mophie On and it acts like it is being plugged in.

Verizon to offer simultaneous voice and data with VoRA for the iPhone?

Apple iPhone - Verizon to offer simultaneous voice and data with VoRA for the iPhone?

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Mobile

One of the selling points for the iPhone has always been the ability to be talking on the phone and still surfing the web (or otherwise using data). The catch with that is Verizon does not currently allow for simultaneous voice and data. For some that will be a deal breaker and they would likely remain with AT&T. That said, according to Verizon executive Brian Higgins;

iPhone Verizon
VoRA Voice Apple iPhone Verizon
"I think there are fringe cases where something like that could be important," Mr. Higgins said. "For a vast majority of customers, I don't think it's a terribly important use case."

Personally, I would agree, however there are those rare times when it comes in really handy and I would also say that it is becoming more and more important for those using a smartphone given you can now do so much.

With that, this lack of simultaneous voice and data is not an issue exclusive to Verizon, but also Sprint as the cause is the CDMA network. The good news here is that it should be taken care of sometime early next year.

This bit is coming by way of said Brad Shewmake, spokesman for the CDMA Development Group, who stated that;

"A solution that will allow CDMA networks to carry voice and data simultaneously will become commercially available in the first half of next year,"

Of course, just because it will be available does not mean Verizon (or Sprint) will adopt it. Nonetheless, for the iPhone to be moving to Verizon, that sounds like something that would need to happen given Apple has run numerous commercials touting the simultaneous voice and data feature in the past.

Do you have a backup of all your iTunes media on an external drive? If not, you've been pushing your luck, but can the 2 laptops "see" one another over your network?

Yes, I realise that;)

Any computer user should really keep backups, and that is even more important if you have a laptop as they are more likely to suffer from accidental damage or theft, so I would buy an external drive, back up the Toshiba to it, then copy from the backup to the Mac. You will then have a drive for future backups of the Mac.

If you don't want to do this, you can copy across your network from one to the other. Do you have file sharing set up?

If you are near an Apple store I believe they will help you move PC files to your new Mac.

-----
Before you sync your phone copy the entire contents of the iTunes and my music folders on your pc, and copy them to the MacBook pro. You can do this by a cat 5 network cable plugged between the to. Then on the MacBook clean up the folders by deleting all files other then the music and .jpg files. Open up iTunes and tell it to find all music

I moved from Toshiba Laptop to iMac couple of years ago. I sent message to Apple support asking what to do and they changed my purchased content so it could all be downloaded again.

Uh Oh AT&T, Verizon Getting The Talk+Surf Feature Too

Apple iPhone - Uh Oh AT&T, Verizon Getting The Talk+Surf Feature Too Not That It Really Matters via TechCrunch by MG Siegler on 10/8/10

The Verizon iPhone nears. And that's great news. I can't wait to get one on day one and leave AT&T far in my rearview. But wait, it's not all peachy-keen as The Wall Street Journal reminds us today. AT&T does have two advantages over Verizon right now: its GSM technology is more widely used around the world (meaning the phone can roam around the world), and you can use data while on a call. But it sounds like the latter is about to get eliminated.

Over the last year, we've had to listen to Luke Wilson tell us that the nation's fastest 3G network is also the one that lets you talk and surf at the same time. Currently, Verizon cannot do that due to a decision the people behind CDMA (the technology that Verizon uses in its phones) made to split data and voice into separate signals. But as WSJ reports:

Now, they're working to overcome it. A solution that will allow CDMA networks to carry voice and data simultaneously will become commercially available in the first half of next year, said Brad Shewmake, spokesman for the CDMA Development Group, an industry organization.

Verizon won't commit to a date for such a feature, but they are working on it. From the story:

Verizon Wireless is working on providing that capability, said Verizon executive Brian Higgins. He wouldn't say when it will be ready, but played down the need for handling voice and data at the same time.

But the last part is important. I've had an iPhone for over three years now and I can only recall a handful of times when I needed/wanted to use data while on a call. And almost all of those times have been when I was on hold. And probably half of those were when I was on hold with AT&T.

AT&T touts the feature, but it's simply not that important. Certainly, it's not important enough to stop me from switching from a service that has poor coverage in some big cities, to one that has great coverage in those same cities. Coverage is a much more important feature.

But I'll admit that the global roaming ability is nice. I was in Japan earlier this year and was able to buy a (ridiculously expensive) plan from AT&T so my phone would work there. With a CDMA phone, I would have likely be out of luck. But again, a small price to pay for my phone to work 99 percent of the rest of the time.

So, for an encore, let's enjoy one of Luke Wilson's lovely AT&T commercials below. You'll note that instead of being 4 to 1 in favor of AT&T, come next year, it looks like it will be more like 1 to 1 (and I'm sure Verizon would argue that they have the fastest 3G network there are only about a billion studies that say different things).

Cracked Front Glass

Apple iPhone Guarantee - Cracked Front Glass

Yesterday my phone fell from my lap when I got out of the car. I was so upset when I saw the front of my iPhone was shattered. I took it to the Apple Store expecting to pay the $199 fee for repair. I couldn't believe it when they decided to give me a complimentary free new iPhone 4 instead!! Wow! I'm so happy

Should I drop mine?? Did you already have a 4?

Just kidding that is wonderful. Good for apple and customer relations.

-----
Yea you have to drop a 4 to get a 4. Good try though! :-)

Yes, the iPhone that I dropped was an iPhone 4. Not sure what makes them decide who they will do this for, but I am very appreciative!!
