MobileMe

Apple iPhone - MobileMe

Is mobile me Free or do you have to pay for it?

Pay for it

-----
You have to pay. It's about £60 per year here in the UK but I bought it off ebay for £18!

Being a web designer I have my own servers and FTP sites etc. but MobileMe just made it all easy.

-----
Is it really worth $99 for Mobile Me, if someone steals the phone, it doesn't seem like a several block radius of where the phone is will help. Opinions Please

-----
Well first of all you can get got $60 at amazon. But even at $60 if that is the only feature you would use it , probably not.

Transmitted at the speed of light from an iPhone 3GS - It is NOT "just a phone"

-----

There are already documented episodes (at least one) of successfully using Find My Phone to recover a lost/stolen iPhone.

"Several block radius" - depends on a)whether the phone is somewhere where the GPS receiver can see satellites (in which case it could be as good as a several YARD radius), and b)if dependent on cell towers or WiFi, how closely spaced they are.

-----
If you keep clicking to update, it gets to the block, and exact street. Never posted address though...

-----
Allows you to wipe handset. Also wireless sync data

-----
However, it's perfectly legitimate to buy a MobileMe membership from 3rd party sellers, like Amazon, where right ow they list it for the lowest price I have ever seen, $50.99

-----
Family pack is also $97.99 ~ $98 - that has up to 5 accounts, the only difference in the other 4 is the total storage space is 5GB instead of 20. If you know 3 or 4 others with iPhones who want to take advanced of the service, you could each pitch in $20 or possibly the other 4 pay a little less for the space and the 'primary' holder pays a little more for the 20GB of space. It is definately worth the reduced rates and especially if you can go in on a family pack with someone. The easy sharing of documents, photos, videos, push mail, and Find my iPhone.

-----
It is all part of it - you have to pay or find a kind person with a spare slot of their 'Family' pack.

You can always use Google Mobile Sync for contacts and/or calendars. E-Mail is not push yet, but keeps being brought up as 'soon'.

-----
I have Mobile Me and running out very soon. Would it work if I buy MMe from Amazon, instead of paying $100 to Apple. How does that work?

Yes it works the same, you receive a package in the mail with a "Redemption Code" - just like you receive when you buy it from an Apple Store or from store.apple.com, you enter code on your me.com account and it extends your expiration date by a year.

-----
The older versions work fine. I used a .Mac last year for my renewal.

Just one major point. Make sure you do it BEFORE your expiration date. Otherwise, it is possible Apple will hit your credit card or cancel your account. Unlikely, but possible!

-----
Turn off the auto renewal in your iTunes account if, you plan to buy a renewal elsewhere. IIRC, Apple auto renewed my account the first time like 45 days early. I have since turned it off for renewal.

The redemption code is the good, but the _if_ there is a CD or DVD, it may be an older one if you get the "old" version. My recent one, did not have the optical disc.

waterproof

iphone waterproof
Im headed to the beach for 2 weeks and I know water is the enemy of the iphone.I looked at several water cases. I was wondering what fine people here may have a water case they use all the time. I would like something easy to carry and something slim.

I want the ipod on the beach, i ll be in airplane mode..no calls no texts but
I want the music..

Easiest way is ziplock bag to keep safe.. Ziplock bag with wire coming out top

It's not waterproof though... I know but will keep most of dirt out, you can waterproof, need 2 ziplock bags, one upside down and other opposite way, as long as you don't submerge will survive water spills and if bathroom with humidity.

__________

Or.. The "waterproof" cases that popped up for me on a quick Google search were $30-50.

If it was just for the music I'd just buy an iPod shuffle for the same price and not worry about it that much. If you are using Windows instead of Mac you may have cheaper music player options.

A reasonably good case to keep sand out of the dock and headset jack would be the iSkin revo. The case is silicone, padding around the corners, a hard plastic screen covering and 'flaps' which coer the dock hole and earphone jack. Your buttons and such are covered too.

For your purposes, this case should give you moderate protection and not look 'fugly'

:)

___
Or.. use an old style shuffle in an H2O Audio case and headphones. It worked great for about 6 months of heavy surfing and white water kayaking. It eventually got some salt water in it and you just replaced the shuffle by going on ebay. It's pretty nice toy but not for your phone until it's insurable against loss or water damaged.

Wi fi problems

Wi fi Problems

Why is it when I go into a place that has wi fi I can click on it but
when I go there the numbers and address is not in the setup boxes ?

Is that because it's unusable?

Do you get the pop up that asks if you want to join the network, or is it
just showing up that you are hooked to the connection? (Wi-fi signal in the
bar at top?)

I just check on my own I have the ask to join Off because it burns up my battery Asking to join all the networks.

I am just curious that sometimes when I go in a place I will check to see if they have wifi and if they do Why the info isn't there

iphone wi fi

Little known fact turning the "ask to join" off, does not really save on the battery, only turning WiFi off does. Turning off the "ask to join" just keeps it from popping up, the WiFi radio is still scanning constantly for networks and connecting to any that have already been joined or have the same names as those that you have joined. For instance all Linksys routers by default are have SSIDs of 'linksys' if the user of the router does not secure their router and does not change the name of the SSID and you join one network with that name then come in contact with another with the same name, your phone will automatically join it regardless of if it is a different network or not. I learned this the hard-way was I accidently used one of my neighbors while walking the dog one time then my phone was joining every network with the same default name as I was driving to and from work, I was joining and leaving a network about every 1/4 of a mile - you would be amazed at how many unsecured 'linksys' WiFi networks there ;-).

Long story longer, if you really want to save on battery life turn WiFi OFF not just the "ask to join network" option.
_____
Or.. My guess is because you're tapping on the blue arrow before you join the network. Since you haven't joined the network yet, your iPhone does not yet have that data - it's assigned to the device when it joins the network.

Tap on the left side of the network name to join it. Then, when you have successfully joined, you can tap the blue arrow to see the network info.
